No—Sophia Learning’s current test-taking guide says its courses do not use proctored exams. Sophia describes Milestones as open-book assessments, with a course-specific time limit shown on the dashboard. That does not mean assessments are unsupervised or that any answer is acceptable: Sophia also describes originality screening, keystroke-based checks and, in some cases, identity verification. The safest way to succeed is to use your course materials, complete the practice work, follow the live instructions and submit your own work.
What Sophia means by “no proctored exams”
Sophia Learning’s current Test-Taking Guide states: “Unlike traditional online programs, Sophia Learning has no proctored exams.” In practical terms, Sophia does not describe a standard requirement to sit for a webcam-monitored exam with a live or automated proctor. The guide’s statement is about the exam format, not a promise that every assessment is unrestricted or free of academic-integrity controls.

Several separate rules operate at the same time:
- Milestones are described as open book in Sophia’s 2023 Student Guide.
- The course dashboard displays the time limit for a particular Milestone.
- Challenges, Milestones and Touchstones each have different purposes and instructions.
- Sophia says it uses processes to protect assessment integrity, including originality review and possible identity checks.
- The Honor Code requires answers to be the student’s own work and prohibits making assessment solutions available to other people.
Therefore, “not proctored” should be read as “not administered through a traditional proctoring session,” not as “anything goes.” Your live course page and assignment instructions control if they differ from a general explanation.
How Sophia assessments are organized
Sophia identifies three main assessment types. Knowing which one you are taking matters more than the word “exam,” because the preparation, timing and submission rules are not identical.
#1 Best Overall
| Assessment | Purpose and format | What the published guidance says | What to check in your course |
|---|---|---|---|
| Challenges | Question-based practice and assessment activities tied to course concepts. | You must attempt each Challenge. Sophia’s grading tutorial says your average across Challenges, Milestones and Touchstones must reach at least 70% for course completion. | Required attempts, question formats and any feedback displayed after submission. |
| Milestones | Summative assessments covering course concepts; these are the assessments most readers mean when they ask about Sophia exams. | Sophia calls Milestones “open book.” The current test-taking guide says a time limit is displayed on the course dashboard. | The exact time limit, allowed materials, number of attempts and any instructions shown immediately before starting. |
| Touchstones | Written assignments included in courses that use them. | You are expected to read the assignment description and rubric, plan the work, proofread and submit original writing. Timing and grading details are course-specific. | Rubric criteria, file or formatting requirements, due or submission rules, and originality expectations. |
Sophia’s courses are self-paced, so you generally choose when to work. Self-paced does not remove the completion requirements: you still need to attempt the required Challenges, meet the overall assessment threshold and complete the Final Milestone.
Are Sophia Milestones open book?
Yes. Sophia’s 2023 Student Guide explicitly describes Milestones as “open book.” The guide suggests having two browser windows or tabs open so you can consult course tutorials while taking a Milestone. That is a permission to use the course’s learning materials, not permission to copy another student’s responses or use an unauthorized answer service.
Open-book assessment still tests whether you can locate, interpret and apply the concepts. Searching every question from scratch can consume the available time, and an external page may contain a different definition or an error. A better approach is to learn the structure of the course materials before starting:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Note the tutorial or lesson associated with each Challenge topic.
- Write a short explanation of important terms in your own words.
- Keep a list of concepts you missed or guessed on during practice.
- Use the course tutorials as your first reference during the Milestone.
Follow the instructions displayed for your specific assessment. A general open-book policy does not override a course-level direction about permitted resources, timing or submission.
Does Sophia use a webcam, lockdown browser or live proctor?
The published test-taking statement says Sophia has no proctored exams. The available guidance does not establish that every learner must use a webcam or lockdown browser for every Milestone, and it does not guarantee that a particular course interface will never introduce a different control. Do not infer a universal hardware rule either way. Before you begin, read the current assessment screen and the course instructions for any browser, device or identity requirement.
What Sophia does describe is a set of integrity measures that can operate without a traditional proctor watching the entire session. Those measures are intended to identify unusual activity, copied writing or a compromised course rather than to turn every Milestone into a live-invigilated exam.
What integrity checks can Sophia use?
Sophia’s Course Rigor FAQ, identified as © 2024, describes several safeguards. They are provider-described practices, not a statement that every student will experience every check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRandomized Milestone questions
The FAQ describes randomized Milestone questions. Randomization makes it harder for a single circulating answer set to represent the assessment for every learner. It also means another student’s question order or wording may not match yours, even in the same course.
Processes to identify compromised courses
Sophia says it has internal processes for identifying courses or assessment activity that may have been compromised. The existence of those processes is why publishing question banks or answer keys can harm other students and violate the provider’s rules.
Copyleaks originality checking
The FAQ says Sophia uses Copyleaks originality checking. This is especially relevant to written work, where copied passages, unattributed material or machine-generated text presented as personal work can raise an academic-integrity issue. An originality report is not a substitute for careful citation and original thinking; paraphrasing too close to a source can still be problematic.
TypingDNA keystroke dynamics
Sophia says it uses TypingDNA keystroke dynamics before summative assessments. Keystroke dynamics can help compare typing patterns for identity or integrity purposes. The description does not say that every learner receives the same intervention or that a particular result automatically determines a course outcome.

Jumio identity verification as a tier-two intervention
The FAQ says Sophia may use Jumio identity verification as a tier-two intervention. “May” matters: this is described as a possible escalation, not a universal step required before every Milestone. If your account receives an identity-verification prompt, follow the instructions shown by Sophia and contact official support if the process does not work.
What Sophia’s Honor Code allows—and forbids
Sophia reproduces this Honor Code principle in its Student Guide: “The answers to all assessments will be your work, and your work alone.” That requirement applies even when an assessment is open book and unproctored.
You may use the course tutorials to understand a concept, check a definition or review an example. You may not present another person’s solution as your own, distribute assessment solutions or arrange for someone else to complete the assessment. Sophia’s guidance also treats submitting AI-generated writing as your own work as plagiarism. Touchstones are screened, and further plagiarism attempts can be escalated under the applicable policy.
That creates a clear boundary for questions about “Sophia Learning answers”:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Allowed study help: explaining a concept, demonstrating a comparable practice problem, organizing notes, or showing how to interpret a rubric.
- Not acceptable: copied Milestone responses, answer keys, leaked question sets, writing submitted under your name that someone or an AI produced for you, or instructions for bypassing identity or originality controls.
If you are unsure whether a resource crosses the line, ask a Learning Coach before submitting. A useful test is whether you can explain and defend the final response in your own words and whether the response reflects your own work rather than a supplied solution.
How course completion and grading work
Sophia’s Academics & Grading Tutorial says course completion requires three things:
- Attempt every required Challenge.
- Reach at least a 70% average across Challenges, Milestones and Touchstones.
- Complete the Final Milestone.
The 70% figure is a provider requirement for course completion, not an independently measured pass-rate statistic. It also does not mean every individual activity can be ignored: an unattempted required Challenge or an incomplete Final Milestone can still prevent completion even if other scores are high.
Because Sophia courses are self-paced, plan around the assessment requirements rather than assuming that flexible scheduling means unlimited time on an open Milestone. The dashboard’s displayed limit applies to the assessment you are about to take.
Step-by-step preparation for a Sophia Milestone
1. Finish the relevant Challenges first
Sophia recommends completing the Challenges before the Milestone. Treat them as both practice and diagnosis. Record the concepts you missed, guessed on or solved only by looking at the explanation. Those are the topics most likely to slow you down later.
2. Take the Practice Milestone
The Student Guide recommends taking the Practice Milestone before the graded Milestone. Use it to learn the question style, identify gaps and estimate how quickly you can work. Do not treat a strong practice result as permission to skip the tutorials for topics you only recognized rather than understood.
3. Review tutorials for missed concepts
Return to the course tutorials connected to your missed or uncertain answers. Write a brief explanation, work a fresh example and check that you can reach the result without copying the practice response. This is more reliable than building a list of isolated answers.
Rank #3
4. Confirm the live instructions and time limit
Open the course dashboard and read the current Milestone instructions. Confirm the displayed time limit and any rules about attempts, allowed materials or navigation. Course interfaces and requirements can change, so do not rely on a timing rule remembered from another course or an older guide.
5. Set up a practical open-book workspace
Use the two-window or two-tab arrangement suggested in the Student Guide: one for the assessment and one for the relevant course tutorials. Close unrelated tabs, silence notifications and keep a clock visible. The goal is quick access to material you already know, not a last-minute search across the entire internet.
6. Work methodically during the Milestone
Read each question completely, identify the concept being tested and consult the tutorial when necessary. If a question is taking too long, mark it mentally, continue with the items you can answer and return only if the interface permits. Never ask another person to supply a response while the assessment is in progress.
7. Check your submission
Before submitting, review unanswered items, numerical signs, units, definitions and any question that you answered by guesswork. Make sure the submission is yours and that no copied text or outside solution has been pasted into the assessment.
8. Contact a Learning Coach when a concept remains unclear
Sophia’s guidance recommends contacting a Learning Coach if you still do not understand a concept. Ask about the underlying idea or the course requirement rather than requesting a direct answer to a live assessment question.

How to prepare for a Touchstone
A Touchstone is a written assignment, and not every course includes one. Start with the assignment description and rubric, because those documents define what the grader is looking for. Sophia recommends planning the work, proofreading it and asking a Learning Coach about unclear requirements.
Read the rubric before drafting
Convert each rubric category into a checklist. Identify the required argument, evidence, calculations, sources, length, format and file type. If the prompt contains several parts, create a heading or paragraph plan so none is overlooked.
Draft from your own understanding
Use course tutorials to learn the material, then write the response yourself. Keep notes that distinguish your ideas from quotations or source material. If the assignment requires citations, follow the stated format and credit the source accurately.
Proofread for substance and originality
Check whether each rubric requirement is actually answered, not merely mentioned. Remove copied wording, verify quotations and correct errors in reasoning, calculations, grammar and formatting. Sophia’s integrity guidance means that submitting AI-generated writing as your own is not an acceptable shortcut.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
“Open book” means I can use any answer website
Why it fails: Open-book guidance refers to using learning materials; it does not waive the Honor Code or protect copied solutions. Randomized questions can also make an online answer set irrelevant.
Rank #4
Fix: Use Sophia tutorials, your own notes and practice work. Ask for conceptual help when you are stuck, then produce the answer yourself.
“No proctor” means there are no identity checks
Why it fails: Sophia describes TypingDNA checks before summative assessments and possible Jumio verification as a tier-two intervention, along with other integrity processes.
Fix: Keep your account information accurate, follow an identity prompt honestly and contact Sophia support if the verification process produces a technical problem.
I can skip Challenges because the Milestone is the real exam
Why it fails: Sophia’s completion tutorial requires attempting each Challenge and reaching the overall assessment threshold.
Fix: Complete the Challenges and use their feedback to target review before the Practice Milestone.
I used AI to write a Touchstone and edited a few sentences
Why it fails: Sophia’s AI-ethics and plagiarism guidance treats submitting AI-generated writing as your own as plagiarism. Editing does not automatically turn someone else’s generated work into your own work.
Fix: Draft from your own notes and understanding. If you use any tool, ensure its use is permitted by the course and that the submitted work genuinely reflects your own authorship.
I rely on an old timing rule
Why it fails: The current guide says the Milestone time limit appears on the dashboard, and course requirements can differ.
Fix: Read the live course screen immediately before starting and plan your session around that displayed limit.

If a verification prompt, browser error or submission problem interrupts your work, preserve the on-screen message and note the time. Do not repeatedly guess at identity responses or attempt to bypass a control. Use Sophia’s official support or Learning Coach channel and describe the course, assessment and exact error. Keep drafts and permitted notes for a Touchstone, but do not send assessment questions or answers to other people.

How to evaluate Sophia against another online-credit option
If you are choosing between providers, do not compare only the word “proctored.” Verify each provider’s current official policy on the same five dimensions:
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Are exams remotely proctored? | Proctoring can require a webcam, room scan, identity check, special browser or scheduled testing window. |
| Are assessments open book and timed? | Open-book access changes preparation, while a time limit changes how quickly you must locate and apply information. |
| Are other identity or originality checks used? | A provider can have integrity controls even when it does not use a traditional live proctor. |
| Is grading based on quizzes, cumulative exams or written projects? | The assessment mix affects workload, writing requirements and the kinds of study support you need. |
| What are the course-specific and transfer rules? | A flexible assessment format is useful only if the receiving school accepts the credit and you can meet the course’s actual requirements. |
Sophia’s published details establish the Sophia side of that comparison. Policies for any other provider must be checked in that provider’s current official documentation; do not assume that “online,” “self-paced” or “unproctored” means the same thing elsewhere.
Questions readers commonly ask
Are Sophia Milestones the same as traditional final exams?
They are summative assessments for course concepts, but Sophia does not administer them as traditional proctored exams. They are described as open book, with a course-specific time limit shown on the dashboard.
Can I keep course tutorials open while taking a Milestone?
Sophia’s Student Guide says Milestones are open book and recommends two browser windows or tabs for using course tutorials. Check the instructions displayed in your course before starting.
Will every student have to complete identity verification?
Not according to the published description. Sophia says Jumio identity verification may be used as a tier-two intervention, so it is presented as a possible escalation rather than a universal step.
Can someone give me the answer to a Sophia assessment?
No. Sophia’s Honor Code requires assessment answers to be your work alone and prohibits making solutions available to others. You can seek explanations and study help, but you should not request or share live assessment answers.
Can I use ChatGPT or another AI tool for a Touchstone?
Sophia’s guidance says submitting AI-generated writing as your own is plagiarism. Follow the specific course policy and submit writing that genuinely represents your own work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat score do I need to complete a Sophia course?
Sophia’s grading tutorial states that you must attempt each Challenge, average at least 70% across Challenges, Milestones and Touchstones, and complete the Final Milestone.
Where can I find the Milestone time limit?
Look on the course dashboard and the assessment instructions immediately before you begin. The limit is course-specific rather than a single universal number stated in the general guide.
Bottom line
Sophia Learning’s current official guide says it has no proctored exams. Milestones are described as open book, but they are still timed according to the course dashboard and protected by academic-integrity expectations. Complete the Challenges, take the Practice Milestone, review tutorials, read the live instructions, follow the Touchstone rubric and submit only your own work. That approach fits both Sophia’s flexible format and its integrity rules.
