Use a policy allocation, not an all-or-nothing choice. Keep cash and unstaked SOL for payroll, taxes, vendors, debt service, collateral calls and other obligations that may fall due soon. Use native SOL staking for the simplest long-horizon yield sleeve when the treasury can tolerate SOL-price volatility and an unstaking delay. Use liquid staking only for a defined portion that needs transferability or DeFi composability and can absorb smart-contract, liquidity, governance and concentration risks.
The right mix depends on when the money is needed, how certain redemption must be, who controls the keys, and whether the treasury can operate a staking program. There is no single “best” percentage and no reliable permanent APY: rewards change with inflation, active stake, validator performance, fees, MEV and market conditions.

What a Solana treasury is actually deciding
A treasury is matching assets to liabilities across different time horizons. The question is not simply whether staking earns more than cash. It is whether the extra reward compensates for price, liquidity, technology, governance and operating risks that could matter when the company needs funds.

Three sleeves cover most policies:
- Cash and unstaked SOL: immediately usable reserves for near-term obligations and emergencies.
- Native staking: SOL delegated through Solana’s native staking system for a long-horizon reserve.
- Liquid staking: SOL deposited into a stake pool in exchange for a token such as mSOL or JitoSOL that can be transferred or used in DeFi while the underlying position earns staking-related rewards.
A treasury can hold all three. A written policy should set a minimum liquid reserve, a maximum concentration for any provider or token, and rules for moving assets between sleeves.

How the three options work
Cash and unstaked SOL
Cash and unstaked SOL do not earn Solana staking rewards. Their purpose is certainty: the treasury can pay a bill without waiting for an epoch boundary, unstaking process, token redemption or market liquidity. Cash also avoids direct exposure to Solana staking protocols, although any SOL held in this sleeve still has SOL-price exposure.
Keep this sleeve available for payroll, taxes, vendors, debt service, collateral calls, planned capital expenditure and a contingency reserve. A company that stakes money needed for one of these uses may be forced to sell a volatile asset or liquid-staking token at an unfavorable time. The opportunity cost of holding cash is the price of reliable access.
Native SOL staking
Native staking delegates SOL to a validator. Solana describes delegation as a shared-risk, shared-reward model: the validator’s performance and commission affect the delegator’s result, as do network-wide conditions. Rewards are issued once per epoch, approximately every two days.

Solana’s staking FAQ records an initial annual inflation rate of 8%, a 15% year-over-year inflation decrease, and a long-term annual inflation rate of 1.5%. Those figures describe the protocol’s inflation schedule, not a guaranteed return to an individual treasury. Realized rewards vary with the amount of SOL staked across the network, validator uptime, validator commission and other network conditions.
Solana also states that there is currently no in-protocol implementation of slashing. That does not make staking risk-free. SOL can lose value, a validator can perform poorly, custody controls can fail, and the treasury may not be able to access a position instantly while it is being unstaked. Native staking is operationally simpler than liquid staking because it does not require a second token or a DeFi smart contract, but it still requires careful validator selection and key management.
Liquid staking
A Solana stake pool accepts SOL and issues an SPL staking derivative representing a pooled position. The derivative can usually be transferred or deposited into other protocols while the pool manages delegation. The token’s exchange value reflects the underlying SOL and accumulated rewards, but it can trade above or below that economic value.

Marinade offers both native staking and mSOL. Its materials describe monitoring the validator landscape and delegating across selected high-performance validators, with a pool of more than 100 high-performing validators described in its FAQ. Native Marinade staking does not require smart-contract interaction and does not issue mSOL; liquid staking does issue mSOL for use elsewhere.

Jito’s documentation describes JitoSOL as non-custodial, usable in DeFi, built on Solana’s stake-pool program and subject to completed audits. Those properties improve composability, but they do not eliminate market, smart-contract, governance, validator-selection or liquidity risks.
In stressed markets, a liquid token can trade at a discount to the value of the SOL represented by the pool. A treasury therefore needs a haircut assumption, approved venues or redemption routes, and a rule for what happens if liquidity falls below the assumed level.
Comparison for treasury policy

Match the sleeve to the liquidity horizon
Tier 1: obligations due soon
Fund obligations due within the period covered by the treasury’s cash forecast with cash or readily spendable, unstaked SOL. Include a buffer for forecast error, delayed receipts, market disruption and collateral calls. The exact amount is a governance decision based on the company’s payroll cycle, revenue volatility, debt terms and access to backup financing.
Recommended Free Tools
Tier 2: operating reserve
Money that may be needed during the next several months can remain in cash or unstaked SOL, or be placed in a limited native-staking sleeve only if the forecast allows time for unstaking. A policy should define the maximum percentage of this tier that may be staked and prohibit using a liquid-staking token as the sole source of emergency liquidity.

Tier 3: strategic or long-horizon reserve
Capital with no expected near-term use can be considered for native staking. A smaller sub-sleeve may use liquid staking when transferability, collateral utility or DeFi composability has a documented business purpose. The policy should still specify how much can be exposed to one pool, token or governance system.
When native staking is the better fit
Native staking generally fits a treasury that values simplicity over composability and can tolerate an access delay. It avoids issuing or holding a derivative token and reduces the number of contracts and integrations that must be monitored. The remaining decisions are still material:
- Validator selection: review commission, uptime history, identity, infrastructure and stake concentration rather than selecting solely on advertised yield.
- Delegation limits: cap the amount delegated to one validator or related operator to reduce correlated performance and governance risk.
- Custody: use institutional key controls, segregated permissions and documented approval for delegation and withdrawal transactions.
- Unstaking plan: record the expected activation and deactivation process and maintain enough liquid assets that an urgent payment does not depend on it.
- Reward accounting: reconcile epoch rewards, validator commission and wallet balances to the general ledger.
When liquid staking is justified
Liquid staking is justified only when the derivative’s utility is worth its additional risk. Examples include needing a transferable representation of staked SOL, posting a position as collateral where permitted, or using a defined DeFi strategy. “Higher yield” by itself is not a sufficient control objective because the additional return can come with smart-contract, liquidity, governance or leverage risk.

Marinade’s native option delegates SOL without issuing mSOL and avoids smart-contract interaction associated with receiving and using a liquid token. Its liquid option issues mSOL, which can be transferred or used in supported DeFi venues. A treasury choosing between them should document whether it needs mSOL’s mobility; if not, native staking may better match a simplicity mandate.
JitoSOL
JitoSOL is designed to combine ordinary staking rewards with MEV rewards. Jito’s documentation describes it as non-custodial, built on Solana’s stake-pool program, usable in DeFi and audited. A policy should treat those characteristics as product features, not as a guarantee against losses. MEV income can vary, and the token remains exposed to SOL price movements, pool operations, governance decisions and secondary-market liquidity.
Controls for any liquid token
- Set a maximum percentage of treasury SOL that may be held in each liquid-staking token.
- Define an approved custody location and prohibit unapproved DeFi contracts.
- Set a valuation haircut for liquidity planning; use a more severe haircut for stress tests.
- Specify redemption routes, minimum pool liquidity and the person or committee authorized to exit.
- Monitor token price relative to the underlying value and investigate an unusual discount before adding exposure.
- Do not count a liquid token as equivalent to cash in the short-term reserve calculation.
Understand the main risks before approving a policy
SOL price risk
Staking rewards are paid in or linked to SOL, so they do not protect the treasury from a fall in SOL’s market price. A higher token balance can still represent less value in the company’s reporting currency. Set exposure limits based on the company’s liabilities and risk tolerance, not on the reward rate alone.

Liquidity and redemption risk
Native staking can require a deactivation period and transaction processing. Liquid staking replaces some of that delay with a tradable token, but trading depth, market spreads and pool capacity can deteriorate during stress. A treasury should assume it may receive less than the token’s calculated underlying value when it exits quickly.
Validator and provider risk
Native delegators depend on validator performance and commission. Liquid-staking users depend on the pool’s validator-selection process, software, administrators and governance. Diversification reduces the impact of one failure, but spreading assets across poorly understood providers can increase operational complexity. Set both a per-validator limit and a per-provider or token limit.
Smart-contract risk
Liquid staking adds contracts that can contain defects or interact with other contracts in unexpected ways. An audit is evidence of a review, not an insurance policy. Keep liquid-staking exposure proportionate to the treasury’s ability to evaluate code, governance and upgrade procedures.
Governance and concentration risk
A Marinade Finance S-1/A filing reported that, as of July 2025, Lido, Marinade Finance and Jito together controlled approximately 93.5% of SOL staked. That figure is dated and must not be treated as a current measurement without rechecking. It does show why a treasury should avoid assuming that a popular provider is automatically diversified and should impose concentration limits.
Custody and operational risk
Loss of a signing key, an incorrect destination address, an unreviewed contract approval or a break in reconciliation can outweigh staking income. Use separate wallets or accounts for liquid reserves and staked assets, dual approval for transfers, allowlisted destinations, transaction simulation where available, and an incident-response plan.
Accounting and tax risk
The treatment of staking rewards, liquid-token receipts, redemptions, swaps and DeFi income depends on the entity’s jurisdiction, legal structure and accounting framework. Obtain advice from the company’s accountant and tax counsel before implementation. Record the policy, valuation method, reward recognition method and evidence supporting each period-end balance.

Build a practical treasury policy
- List liabilities by date. Map payroll, taxes, vendors, debt, collateral and planned investments against expected cash receipts.
- Set a minimum liquid reserve. Define what qualifies as liquid, whether unstaked SOL counts, and the haircut applied to any asset that could trade below its reference value.
- Choose the strategic sleeve. Permit native staking for long-horizon reserves and permit liquid staking only when a documented business use requires transferability or DeFi access.
- Set concentration caps. Limit exposure by validator, liquid-staking provider, token, custodian and governance system.
- Approve counterparties and venues. Maintain an allowlist for custodians, validators, stake pools and any DeFi contracts.
- Define authority. State who can delegate, undelegate, mint or redeem a liquid token, move funds and override a limit during an emergency.
- Document valuation. Establish the source and timing for SOL, mSOL and JitoSOL prices, the liquidity haircut and the accounting entries for rewards.
- Schedule review. Reassess limits after material changes in validator performance, provider governance, pool liquidity, regulations, liabilities or the company’s risk capacity.
Implementation checklist for native staking
- Confirm that the amount is outside the minimum liquid reserve and that the board, finance committee or delegated officer has approved the allocation.
- Verify the custody setup, withdrawal authority and recovery process before delegating any SOL.
- Screen validators for commission, uptime, infrastructure and concentration; document the selection and alternatives.
- Delegate a test amount, verify the account and reward reporting, then scale within the approved cap.
- Record the epoch, delegated amount, validator identity, commission and expected review date.
- Reconcile rewards and balances each reporting period and investigate missed or unusually low rewards.
- Start deactivation early when a known liability is approaching; do not wait until the payment date.
Implementation checklist for liquid staking
- Write the business purpose for holding the derivative and identify the exact token and pool.
- Review the pool’s validator-selection method, governance, fees, audits, upgrade controls and redemption mechanics.
- Set a purchase limit, a maximum acceptable discount, a liquidity haircut and an exit trigger.
- Use a segregated wallet or custody account and approve only the contracts required for minting, redemption or an explicitly authorized DeFi use.
- Acquire a small test position, verify receipt and valuation, and confirm that the accounting system can track the token.
- Monitor the token’s market price, underlying-value estimate, pool liquidity, validator distribution and governance notices.
- Exit or reduce exposure if the token breaches the policy’s discount, liquidity, concentration or operational limits.
How much SOL should remain liquid?
There is no universal percentage. A company with predictable receipts, short payment cycles and committed credit may need a smaller liquid reserve than a company with volatile revenue, large tax bills or collateral obligations. Calculate the reserve from the largest plausible cash need during the period in which staked assets cannot be accessed, then add a contingency margin.
Include obligations that are easy to overlook: payroll taxes, annual insurance, token-denominated vendor contracts, exchange or custodian settlement delays, debt covenants and collateral top-ups. Treat liquid-staking tokens as a separate risk category rather than counting them one-for-one with cash. Recalculate the reserve when liabilities or market conditions change.
Can a company stake its Solana treasury?
Yes, a company can generally arrange staking through an appropriate custodian or wallet structure, but the legal, accounting, tax and authorization requirements depend on its jurisdiction and entity type. The company should document beneficial ownership, signing authority, custody segregation, valuation, reward recognition, counterparty due diligence and withdrawal procedures before committing funds.
Direct self-custody may offer control but requires mature key-management and incident-response capabilities. A qualified institutional custodian may simplify controls while introducing counterparty and fee considerations. Neither route removes SOL-price risk or the need for a liquid reserve.
Monitoring and stress tests
At least monthly, and more often for a material allocation, review:
- Liquid reserve coverage against the next several months of obligations.
- SOL price exposure relative to approved limits.
- Native-staked amount, validator commission, uptime and reward variance.
- Liquid-token price, estimated underlying value, market depth and redemption capacity.
- Exposure by validator, provider, custodian and governance system.
- Open approvals, software changes, incidents and unresolved reconciliation breaks.
Run a stress case in which SOL falls sharply, the liquid token trades at a discount, a validator or pool becomes unavailable and a large obligation arrives at the same time. The policy passes only if the company can still meet that obligation without breaching custody, concentration or leverage limits.
Worked allocation example
Assume a company has a reserve that includes SOL and needs to cover payroll, taxes and vendors over the next quarter. It could designate a cash and unstaked-SOL tier sized to those obligations plus a contingency margin. A separate operating tier could remain unstaked until the cash forecast shows a clear buffer. Only the residual strategic reserve would be eligible for native staking, and a smaller portion of that reserve could be eligible for a liquid token if the company has a documented collateral or transferability need.

The correct allocation changes with liability timing, access to financing, SOL volatility, custody capability and the board’s risk tolerance. A policy that cannot explain why an amount is liquid, natively staked or liquid-staked is not yet complete.
Bottom line
Keep near-term obligations in cash or unstaked SOL. Prefer native staking for a long-horizon reserve when simplicity and lower protocol complexity matter more than composability. Use liquid staking as a capped, purpose-driven sleeve when transferability or DeFi utility is worth the added smart-contract, liquidity, governance and concentration risks. Recheck live reward data before making a return claim, and govern the allocation with liquidity haircuts, concentration caps, custody controls and a documented exit plan.
