The Social Security Statement is the record; your my Social Security account is the online gateway. The Statement summarizes your reported earnings and estimated retirement, disability, and survivors benefits. The account is where you view that Statement and use other Social Security services, such as checking an application, managing direct deposit, and requesting documents. They are connected, but they are not the same thing.
Statement and account: the difference at a glance
| Question | Social Security Statement | my Social Security account |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A personal record of earnings and estimated benefits. | A secure online gateway to Social Security information and service tasks. |
| What can you see? | Yearly earnings history and estimates for retirement, disability, and survivors benefits. | The Statement, your earnings record, estimated Social Security and Medicare taxes, and other account-specific information. |
| Retirement estimates | The redesigned Statement shows personalized retirement estimates at nine possible claiming ages. | Interactive estimate and planning tools, including spouse estimates when applicable. |
| Employer names | Not displayed on the online yearly earnings history. | Lets you review the earnings record shown in your account; it does not turn the Statement into an employer-by-employer report. |
| Other actions | Mainly provides information about earnings and projected benefits. | Depending on your status and eligibility, supports application tracking, replacement-card requests, direct-deposit and contact updates, tax forms, benefit verification, and form submissions. |
| How you get it | Open it online through an official account, or receive a mailed Statement in the circumstances SSA describes. | Create an account or sign in using one of the identity-verification options currently listed by SSA, such as Login.gov or ID.me. |
What the Social Security Statement shows
The Statement is the document-like record you consult when you want to know what earnings SSA has credited to you and what benefits those earnings may support. It is not an approval notice, a payment schedule, or a guarantee of a particular monthly check. The figures are projections based on the information available and the assumptions used by SSA.

Your yearly earnings history
The online Statement includes a yearly history of earnings reported for Social Security purposes. SSA uses its earnings records when determining benefit eligibility and calculating benefits, so reviewing this section is one of the most important reasons to open the Statement.

Look for years in which you worked but see no earnings, unusually low amounts, or an amount that does not match your own records. Keep pay stubs, Forms W-2, tax returns, and other contemporaneous records if you need to support a correction request. SSA’s Statement information explains how to report an error; do not wait until you are ready to claim benefits to investigate an apparent gap.
Retirement, disability, and survivors estimates
The Statement includes estimates for three broad benefit categories:
- Retirement: projected benefits at different claiming ages.
- Disability: an estimate for disability benefits if you meet the separate disability and work-credit requirements.
- Survivors: an estimate of benefits that may be payable to eligible family members after your death.
These categories answer different questions. A retirement estimate is not a promise that you qualify for disability, and a survivors estimate does not establish that a particular family member will receive a benefit. Eligibility, family circumstances, insured status, and the law in effect when a claim is decided all matter.

SSA says the redesigned Statement includes a bar graph with personalized retirement estimates at nine different ages, depending on when you start benefits. The graph is useful for seeing the direction of the estimate as your claiming age changes, but it is still an estimate. It should not be read as a recommendation to claim at the earliest, latest, or any other age.

Your account is a service portal rather than a second version of the Statement. It stores or presents information tied to your identity and lets you complete tasks that a static document cannot handle.

SSA lists additional services that may be available according to your benefit status and eligibility. Examples include:
- Checking the status of a benefit application.
- Requesting a replacement Social Security card.
- Managing direct-deposit information.
- Updating contact details.
- Accessing tax forms and benefit-verification documents.
- Submitting forms or other information requested by SSA.
Not every account holder sees every option. A person who has never filed a claim will not have the same dashboard choices as someone receiving benefits, and SSA can change its labels, eligibility rules, or available transactions.
How to view your Statement online
SSA describes an official my Social Security account as the normal online way to view the Statement. Use SSA’s own site rather than a third-party service that asks you to enter personal information.

- Open SSA’s official my Social Security sign-in page. Check the domain and the browser address before entering identifying information.
- Select the option to sign in or create an account. SSA currently lists Login.gov and ID.me as account-access options; the choices and verification requirements can change.
- Complete identity verification. Follow the selected provider’s prompts and SSA’s instructions. Use information that matches your official records.
- Open the Statement from the account dashboard. Look for the Social Security Statement or earnings-record link, then choose the online view or download option presented.
- Review each earnings year and each benefit section. Compare the history with your tax and employment records before relying on the estimates.
- Save a copy for your records. Record the date you viewed it, because later corrections, additional earnings, or changes in SSA assumptions can change the figures.
If you cannot complete online verification, use the contact or help instructions on SSA’s current sign-in and account pages. Do not create duplicate accounts in an attempt to bypass an identity mismatch; that can make access problems harder to resolve.
How to check and correct your earnings record
Checking the record is more than a bookkeeping exercise. SSA bases benefits on its earnings records, so an error can affect both eligibility and the amount of a future benefit.
A practical review checklist
- Check every year in which you had covered earnings.
- Compare the amounts with W-2 forms, tax returns, payroll records, or other documents.
- Look for an entire year that is missing, a year that is lower than expected, or a duplicated or unusually high amount.
- Pay special attention to older years, when your own records may be harder to obtain.
- Note whether the Statement combines earlier years and then open the complete online record for more detail.
If something appears wrong, follow SSA’s instructions for reporting a correction. The evidence you need can depend on the year and the type of error. Keep copies of anything you submit and write down when and how you reported it.
When you need more detail than the online Statement
The free online yearly history is not the same as a certified or detailed itemized earnings statement. SSA uses Form SSA-7050 for certain requests for detailed earnings information. You do not need that form simply to view the ordinary yearly history in your account.
| SSA-7050 request listed by SSA | Fee listed on the form page | Certification |
|---|---|---|
| Yearly earnings totals | $35 | Certified |
| Detailed itemized earnings statement | $61 | Non-certified |
| Detailed itemized earnings statement | $96 | Certified |
Those amounts are the fee schedule shown by SSA for the form version effective October 1, 2024. Fees, payment rules, and the types of records available can change, so verify the current SSA-7050 instructions before sending a request. A paid detailed request may be appropriate for a formal verification need, but it is not a substitute for routinely checking the free online record.

How SSA’s estimates are built—and why they can change
SSA’s estimate information says personalized projections use your work earnings and the age or date when benefits begin. Continuing to work may increase an estimate if later earnings become one of your highest earning years. That is because the benefit formula considers a worker’s earnings history, and a new high year can replace a lower year in the calculation.
The estimate can also change when SSA receives additional earnings, corrects an error, updates assumptions, or when you use a different claiming date. It is therefore best to treat a Statement as a current snapshot of projected benefits rather than a locked-in quote.
2026 figures that affect work and credits
For 2026, SSA’s estimate page lists a Social Security taxable earnings limit of $184,500. It also lists $1,890 in covered earnings for one credit, with a maximum of four credits in the year. These are annual 2026 figures and can change in later years. Earning more than the taxable maximum does not create unlimited Social Security credits for that year; the credit maximum remains four.
Credits are only one part of eligibility. The number required depends on the benefit type and, for disability and survivors benefits, on factors such as age and the timing of work. An account estimate cannot waive those requirements.

Mailed Statements and people without accounts
Online access is the usual route, but SSA also describes mailed Statements for workers age 60 and older who do not have an account. The mailing is sent three months before the person’s birthday. This is not a guarantee that every older worker will receive a paper copy under every circumstance; address information and SSA’s current mailing rules matter.

If you receive a paper Statement, you can still create an account to view the online record and use interactive tools. The paper document should be treated as a prompt to check the account record, not as a different benefit system.
Which one should you use?
| Your goal | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| See your projected retirement, disability, or survivors benefits | Social Security Statement | It presents the core earnings record and benefit estimates. |
| Compare claiming ages or test future earnings assumptions | my Social Security account | The account offers interactive estimate tools in addition to the Statement. |
| Check whether SSA credited your wages correctly | Statement and complete online earnings record | Start with the free yearly history, then investigate discrepancies. |
| Track an application | my Social Security account | Application status is an account service, not a section of the Statement. |
| Change direct deposit or contact information | my Social Security account | These are account transactions, subject to your eligibility and current SSA options. |
| Obtain a certified or detailed itemized earnings report | SSA-7050 process | The ordinary online history is free but is not the same as every detailed or certified record. |
Common points of confusion
“I have an account, so the account itself must be my Statement.”
No. The account is the access system. The Statement is the record you open inside it. You can use the account for many tasks that have nothing to do with the Statement.
“My Statement does not list my employer, so my earnings are missing.”
The online yearly history does not display employer information. Compare the reported amounts and years instead. If you need an employer-specific or itemized record, investigate the separate detailed-request process rather than assuming the free Statement is supposed to contain those names.
Recommended Free Tools
“The retirement bar graph tells me exactly what I will receive.”
It shows personalized estimates at nine claiming ages, not a guaranteed payment. Future earnings, the date benefits start, eligibility, and later corrections can change the result.
“I need to pay to see my earnings history.”
You do not need to pay to view the ordinary yearly history online through an official account. Fees apply to certain SSA-7050 requests for certified or detailed information, not to normal account access.
“The number in my account never changes.”
Estimates can change as new earnings are posted, errors are corrected, assumptions are updated, or you select a different claiming date. Save dated copies when you are making a long-term planning decision.
Safe account-use habits
- Begin from SSA’s official website and verify the address before signing in.
- Use only the identity-verification path presented by SSA, currently including Login.gov or ID.me.
- Never give account credentials to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Review contact and direct-deposit information after signing in, especially if you receive benefits.
- Keep copies of correction requests and supporting earnings documents.
- Recheck volatile figures, fees, and available services on SSA’s current pages before acting on an old Statement or form.
Bottom line
The Statement answers, “What earnings does SSA have for me, and what benefits might those earnings produce?” The my Social Security account answers, “Where can I see that information and complete other Social Security tasks?” Use the Statement to audit your record and understand the estimates; use the account to access the record, test scenarios, and manage eligible services.
