Social Security Spousal, Survivor, and Retirement Benefits: Which Should You Claim?

There is no single best Social Security claiming age. Your strongest choice depends on your birth year and full retirement age, your own earnings record, a spouse’s or former spouse’s record, survivor eligibility, work income, health and longevity expectations, taxes, and how Medicare premiums fit your budget. In general, claiming retirement benefits before full retirement age permanently lowers the monthly amount; delaying your own retirement benefit after full retirement age raises it until age 70. Spousal and survivor benefits follow different formulas and can sometimes be sequenced with your own retirement benefit.

The rules that determine your choices

Your retirement benefit can start at 62

Social Security retirement benefits are available as early as age 62. The Social Security Administration (SSA) states that starting before your full retirement age (FRA) means a permanently lower monthly benefit. The reduction does not disappear when you reach FRA. If you delay after FRA, delayed-retirement credits increase your benefit for each month you wait, up to age 70. Delaying beyond 70 produces no further increase.

For people attaining age 62 in 2026, FRA is 67. FRA varies by birth year, so do not use 67 automatically if you are younger or older. Medicare eligibility generally remains age 65, separate from the age at which you start retirement benefits. Waiting for Social Security does not by itself postpone Medicare enrollment obligations.

Spousal benefits are tied to the worker’s FRA amount

An eligible spouse can receive up to 50% of the worker’s full-retirement-age benefit amount when the spouse claims at their own FRA. The ceiling is based on the worker’s FRA amount, not on a larger amount created by the worker’s delayed-retirement credits. Claiming a spousal benefit before the spouse’s FRA permanently reduces that spousal payment.

A spouse who is caring for the worker’s child may qualify for the full spouse amount regardless of age when the child is under 16 or has a qualifying disability. This is a separate eligibility path from the ordinary age-based spousal rule.

Deemed filing controls whether you can choose only one benefit

For someone eligible for both a retirement benefit on their own record and a spousal benefit, filing for one generally counts as filing for both if the person turned 62 on or after January 2, 2016. SSA calls this deemed filing. The agency compares the amounts and pays the applicable combination under its rules; you generally cannot take only a spousal amount while allowing your own retirement benefit to earn delayed-retirement credits.

People born before January 2, 1954 may have the restricted-application option when they are at FRA. A person who meets that cohort and filing requirement can generally apply for only the spousal benefit, allowing their own retirement benefit to grow until a later claim. This grandfathered strategy is not generally available to later birth cohorts.

Survivor benefits use a different calculation

A qualifying widow or widower can generally begin survivor benefits at 60, or at 50 if disabled. The earliest aged-survivor payment is generally 71.5% of the deceased worker’s benefit; waiting until the survivor’s FRA can raise the payment to 100% of the applicable amount. The exact amount depends on the deceased worker’s claiming history and the survivor’s age when filing.

A surviving divorced spouse can generally qualify if the marriage lasted at least 10 years, subject to other SSA eligibility rules. Remarriage timing can change eligibility, so a divorced survivor should verify the rules with SSA before filing.

Benefit or rule Age or amount in the cited SSA guidance What the figure means
Earliest retirement claim 62 Starting before FRA permanently reduces the worker’s monthly retirement benefit.
FRA for people attaining 62 in 2026 67 The age used for an unreduced retirement benefit for that cohort.
Delayed-retirement credits Through age 70 Waiting after FRA raises the retirement benefit; there is no increase after 70.
Maximum ordinary spousal benefit 50% of the worker’s FRA amount The maximum applies when the spouse claims at their FRA; earlier filing reduces it.
Earliest aged-survivor benefit 71.5% The generally available percentage at the earliest survivor claiming age.
Maximum survivor percentage 100% Generally available at the survivor’s FRA, subject to the deceased worker’s record.
Lump-sum death payment $255 A one-time SSA payment, separate from monthly survivor benefits.

How the benefits interact when you claim

You do not receive two full checks by combining spousal and retirement benefits

When you qualify on both your own record and a spouse’s record, SSA pays your own retirement benefit first and adds any spousal amount needed to reach the higher eligible total. The result is not two complete benefits. Because deemed filing applies to most people who turned 62 on or after January 2, 2016, claiming a spousal benefit usually starts your own retirement claim as well.

Before making a filing decision, obtain the worker’s FRA benefit estimate and your own estimate. The worker’s delayed amount is not the base for the ordinary 50% spousal maximum, so using the worker’s age-70 estimate can overstate the possible spousal payment.

A survivor can start one benefit and switch later

SSA treats survivor and retirement benefits as separate claiming choices. A qualifying survivor may start survivor benefits and later switch to their own retirement benefit, or start their own retirement benefit and later claim survivor benefits, depending on which sequence produces the appropriate higher payment at each stage. SSA gives the example of starting survivor benefits and changing to retirement at age 70, when the survivor’s own retirement payment may be highest.

Survivor benefits are not stacked on top of a full retirement benefit. At a given time, SSA generally pays the higher applicable amount, with any difference added under its dual-entitlement rules. The deceased worker’s delayed-retirement credits can increase the survivor amount. If the worker claimed early, that early claiming can limit the survivor amount.

Divorce and remarriage require a separate check

A divorced person may qualify for benefits on a former spouse’s record, and a surviving divorced spouse may qualify for survivor benefits. The surviving-divorced-spouse rule generally requires a marriage of at least 10 years. Remarriage can affect eligibility differently depending on whether you are seeking a divorced-spouse benefit or a survivor benefit and when the remarriage occurred. Gather divorce and marriage dates and ask SSA to evaluate the exact category before applying.

A practical decision process

  1. Identify every possible record. List your own retirement record, your current spouse’s record, any former spouse’s record, and a deceased worker’s record. Note ages, disability status, marriage duration, divorce dates, and remarriage dates.
  2. Confirm your FRA and cohort rules. Your FRA depends on birth year. If you turned 62 on or after January 2, 2016, assume deemed filing will apply unless SSA confirms an exception. If you were born before January 2, 1954, ask specifically whether restricted application is available at FRA.
  3. Get personalized estimates. Use each person’s SSA estimate rather than a generic online example. Record the amounts at 62, FRA, and 70 when those estimates are available, and identify the worker’s FRA amount separately from any delayed amount.
  4. Map income needs. Decide how much guaranteed monthly income you need now, whether other assets can cover a delay, and how long a higher inflation-adjusted benefit would protect you. A larger benefit can matter most to the person expected to live the longest.
  5. Compare survivor income. For a married household, model the survivor’s income after the first death. Check the survivor amount at each possible start age and compare it with the survivor’s own retirement amount. Do not assume the first spouse to die will leave two full benefits behind.
  6. Include work and earnings. If you will work before FRA, estimate whether earnings will exceed the annual limit and whether temporary withholding will apply. Recalculate the result at FRA, when the earnings test ends.
  7. Coordinate taxes and Medicare. Compare the after-tax value of each start date and account for Medicare eligibility and premium effects. These items can change the practical value of a larger or smaller gross benefit.
  8. Apply only after checking the sequence. Once you file, some reductions and elections are permanent. Recheck the proposed start dates with SSA, especially after a death, divorce, remarriage, or change in work plans.

Choosing your own retirement claim

Claim earlier when immediate cash or health circumstances dominate

Starting at 62 can provide income when you need it, but the lower monthly amount generally lasts for life. Early claiming may fit someone with limited resources, poor health, a shorter expected lifespan, or a strong reason to preserve other assets. Those are personal judgments, not conclusions that can be made from age alone.

Delay when longevity protection is the priority

Waiting to FRA avoids the early-claim reduction. Waiting beyond FRA adds delayed-retirement credits through age 70 and creates a larger monthly benefit that is adjusted over time under Social Security’s rules. Delaying can be particularly valuable when your benefit will be the larger income stream for a surviving spouse, because the deceased worker’s delayed credits can increase the survivor amount.

Choosing a spousal claim

Start with the worker’s FRA amount

Ask SSA for the worker’s full-retirement-age benefit, then calculate the ordinary maximum of 50% at the spouse’s FRA. If either spouse files early, the actual spousal payment can be lower. A worker’s age-70 amount is not the denominator for the ordinary spousal maximum.

Check deemed filing before planning a “spousal only” strategy

If you are in the post-January 1, 1954 cohort, do not plan on receiving only a spousal payment while your own retirement benefit grows. Deemed filing generally combines the applications. The restricted-application strategy is limited to people born before January 2, 1954 who meet SSA’s FRA requirements.

Account for the child-in-care exception

A spouse caring for an entitled child under 16 or a child with a qualifying disability may receive the full spouse amount regardless of the spouse’s age. Because this eligibility route is tied to the child’s status, verify when entitlement begins and ends with SSA.

Choosing survivor benefits

Compare each possible start age

For an aged survivor, the generally earliest start is 60; for a disabled survivor, it can be 50. Starting at the earliest age generally produces 71.5% of the applicable survivor amount. Waiting toward survivor FRA increases the percentage, up to 100% at FRA. The additional months of waiting can therefore buy a permanently larger survivor payment.

Use sequencing to protect income

If your own retirement benefit will eventually be higher, survivor benefits can provide income first while your retirement benefit grows toward age 70. If the survivor benefit is the larger amount, the reverse sequence may be appropriate. SSA must determine the applicable amount in each period; you cannot receive both full amounts simultaneously.

Act promptly after a death

Contact SSA as soon as possible to discuss monthly survivor benefits and the $255 lump-sum death payment. SSA says survivor applications cannot be completed online. Have the deceased worker’s information, your identification, marriage or divorce records, and banking details ready, and ask how the filing date affects payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Working while receiving benefits

Before FRA, earnings above the annual limit can cause SSA to withhold some benefits temporarily. The withheld months are later recalculated, so the reduction is not necessarily a permanent loss of every dollar withheld. After FRA, earnings no longer reduce Social Security benefits under the earnings test.

Continuing to work can also raise your eventual benefit. Social Security generally uses your highest 35 years of earnings; a new year can replace a lower year in that calculation. Check your earnings record for missing or incorrect wages before relying on an estimate.

Documents and questions to prepare

  • Your and your spouse’s dates of birth and estimated FRA.
  • SSA benefit estimates at 62, FRA, and 70, including the worker’s FRA amount.
  • Current and expected annual earnings, including the year you plan to stop working.
  • Marriage, divorce, remarriage, and death dates; a surviving divorced spouse should document a marriage lasting at least 10 years.
  • Information about a child under 16 or a child with a qualifying disability when a child-in-care spousal benefit may apply.
  • A comparison of survivor income, taxes, Medicare costs, savings withdrawals, and other guaranteed income.
  • A written sequence showing which benefit starts first and when a switch would occur.

Ask SSA to confirm the exact filing category, the first month of entitlement, any deemed-filing consequence, the earnings-test treatment, and the amount payable under each sequence. A fee-only fiduciary retirement planner or an independent Social Security claiming analysis can help with tax, longevity, survivor-income, and Medicare coordination when the household decision is complex.
