SSA provides two identity-verification routes: Login.gov and ID.me. Login.gov is generally presented as the standard choice for people in the United States; ID.me is available to users inside or outside the United States.
#1 Best Overall
- Start at SSA’s my Social Security sign-in page and choose Login.gov or ID.me.
- Create an account with the selected provider, or sign in if you already have one.
- Complete identity verification. Depending on the provider, you may need a government-issued photo ID and a phone or camera-enabled device.
- Return to SSA and connect the verified identity to your personal my Social Security account.
Use your own identifying information and keep the sign-in credentials and recovery methods secure. If verification fails, follow the provider’s recovery instructions; SSA may require an in-person or alternate verification route in limited cases.
VA disability compensation and SSDI are different benefits
A VA disability rating does not automatically establish eligibility for SSDI. The programs use different purposes, evidence and legal tests.
| Feature | VA disability compensation | SSDI |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Compensates for a condition connected to military service. | Provides benefits when a medical condition prevents substantial work and is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. |
| Application | Apply through the Department of Veterans Affairs. | Apply through SSA, including its online disability application. |
| Evidence focus | Service connection and the VA’s disability evaluation. | Medical evidence plus work history and covered-work requirements under SSA rules. |
| Interaction | SSA says the payments do not reduce each other. A person can qualify for both, but the claims are separate. | |
You therefore need to file a VA claim and an SSA disability claim independently, even when the same condition is involved.

Expedited SSDI processing for some veterans
SSA says you may qualify for expedited claim processing if you have a VA disability compensation rating of 100% Permanent & Total (P&T), or if you developed a disability while on active military service on or after October 1, 2001. Expedited handling affects processing speed; it does not change SSA’s disability definition or guarantee approval.
SSA usually identifies qualifying veterans electronically. In rare cases, it may ask you to provide the VA notification letter showing the qualifying status. Keep that letter available when you apply.
Applying for disability online
The online disability application lets you submit information without driving to an office or waiting for an appointment. Gather the following before starting:
Rank #3
- Names and contact details for doctors, clinics and other medical providers.
- Treatment dates, diagnoses, medicines, tests and hospitalization information.
- Recent earnings and employer information.
- A detailed work history.
- Dates of active service before 1968, when applicable.
- Military discharge papers, when applicable.
Describe how your condition limits work-related activities and provide complete, consistent dates. SSA makes the medical and work-capacity decision under its own rules, regardless of your VA percentage.
Does active-duty status or military pay prevent an online SSDI claim?
Active-duty service and military pay do not by themselves answer whether you qualify. SSA evaluates the claim under its disability, work and insured-status rules. An active-duty service member can use the online application, but must report current service, earnings and the medical limitations that support the claim. Do not assume a VA decision will substitute for SSA’s review.
How military service affects Social Security credits
Active-duty and active-duty-training earnings have been covered by Social Security since 1957, so those wages generally appear in your earnings record and can help you qualify for retirement or disability benefits.
Rank #4
Special extra earnings credits
Special extra credits may apply to some military service from 1957 through 2001. SSA does not provide special extra earnings credits for service after 2001. For qualifying service from September 16, 1940, through December 31, 1956, SSA describes a credit of $160 for each month of service.
2026 credit amount and retirement qualification
For 2026, $1,890 in covered earnings earns one Social Security credit, with a maximum of four credits in the year. Retirement eligibility generally requires 40 credits. The dollar threshold is adjusted over time, so use the amount for the specific year you are checking.

Military retirement generally does not reduce a worker’s Social Security benefit. Your exact amount still depends on your covered earnings record and the benefit you claim.

Checking an application or appeal
Sign in to my Social Security and open the application or appeal status feature. The account can show whether SSA has received the filing and where it is in the process. Keep confirmation details and respond promptly to requests for records or clarification. If the online status does not answer a specific question, use SSA’s contact options or request assistance from an office.
Managing benefits after approval
Beneficiaries can use the account to update an address or direct-deposit information, obtain benefit-verification letters and tax forms, and complete an online continuing-disability review when offered. Disability beneficiaries must report changes that could affect eligibility, including medical improvement, a return to work or self-employment. Reporting promptly helps prevent avoidable overpayments or interruptions.
