SSDI is insurance you earn through covered work and recent work credits after becoming disabled. SSI is needs-based assistance for people who are aged, blind, or disabled and have limited income and resources. Retirement benefits are based on covered earnings and the age at which you claim them. A person can receive more than one program only when each program’s separate rules are satisfied.
The three programs at a glance
The most important distinction is what qualifies you. SSDI asks whether you have a qualifying disability and enough recent work credits. SSI asks whether you are aged, blind, or disabled and financially needy. Retirement benefits ask whether you are old enough to claim and have enough covered work to be insured.

| Feature | SSDI | SSI | Retirement benefits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose and funding | Disability insurance earned through covered work; employment taxes primarily finance Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance benefits, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). | Needs-based federal assistance for people who are aged, blind, or disabled; it is not based on prior work. | Insurance benefit earned through covered work, payable when you reach the claiming age. |
| Qualifying event | A medical condition that meets SSA’s disability standard and is expected to last at least one year or result in death, plus insured status. | Age, blindness, or disability, plus limited income and resources. | Reaching at least age 62 and having sufficient covered work credits for insured status. |
| Work credits | Required. The number of recent credits needed varies with your age when disability begins. | None required. | Required for insured status; SSA determines whether your earnings record qualifies. |
| Income and resource test | No SSI-style resource test determines the basic insurance entitlement, although work and other benefits can affect an individual’s situation. | Yes. Countable income, resources, living arrangements, and state supplements can change eligibility or payment. | No SSI-style resource test. Your covered earnings record and claiming age determine the benefit. |
| How the amount is calculated | Based mainly on your covered earnings record used for disability insurance. | Based on the federal SSI payment rules, income exclusions, living arrangements, and any state supplement in effect. | Based on covered earnings, the highest 35 years in the record, and the age you start benefits. |
| What happens later | Automatically changes to retirement benefits when you reach full retirement age; SSA does not pay both on the same earnings record at the same time. | Can be paid with Social Security benefits only while SSI income and resource rules remain satisfied. | Can start as early as 62; starting before full retirement age reduces the monthly amount, while delaying after full retirement age can increase it. |
How SSDI works
It is disability insurance, not a general low-income benefit
SSDI protects workers who become unable to maintain qualifying work because of a serious medical condition. Eligibility has two separate parts: SSA must find that the condition satisfies its disability standard, and your work record must show insured status. A person can have substantial financial need and still be denied SSDI for lacking enough recent credits; another person can have many credits but be denied because the medical standard is not met.

SSA generally requires a condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. Short-term illnesses, temporary injuries, and conditions that do not meet the agency’s severity and duration rules do not qualify simply because they prevent work for a few weeks or months. Medical evidence and the expected duration are central to the determination.

Recent work credits are age-dependent
SSDI uses both total and recent work credits. Younger workers can qualify with fewer credits than older workers, because SSA adjusts the recent-work requirement to the age at which disability begins. There is therefore no single credit number that applies to every applicant.
Credits are tied to wages or self-employment income, not to the number of hours you work. For calendar year 2026, SSA says one credit requires $1,890 in wages or net self-employment income, and you can earn no more than four credits in the year. That dollar threshold is a 2026 figure and can change annually; see SSA’s disability qualification guidance for the current rule.
How the payment is determined
SSDI is tied to your covered earnings record. Two people with the same diagnosis can receive different amounts because their taxable earnings histories differ. The benefit is not set by the SSI federal payment rate, and it is not automatically the same as a retirement benefit claimed at 62.

How SSI works
No prior work record is required
SSI supports people who are aged, blind, or disabled and have limited financial resources. You do not have to have worked or paid Social Security taxes to apply. That makes SSI fundamentally different from SSDI and retirement insurance, both of which depend on an insured work record.
The financial test can change both eligibility and payment
SSA looks at countable income, resources, and living arrangements. Income can include wages, pensions, help from other people, and Social Security benefits. A person may therefore qualify medically for SSI but receive a reduced payment—or no SSI payment—because of other income or resources. Living with someone who provides food or shelter can also affect the calculation.
SSI has a federal payment rate and resource rules that are revised over time. State supplements may add to the federal amount, and not every state uses the same supplement. Because the federal rate, exclusions, limits, and state additions are time-sensitive, use SSA’s current SSI overview when estimating eligibility rather than relying on an old dollar figure.

SSI can coexist with Social Security
Someone can receive SSI and SSDI or retirement benefits at the same time if the Social Security payment is low enough and all SSI income and resource rules continue to be met. Social Security income generally reduces SSI rather than being ignored. Receiving a Social Security benefit does not create an automatic right to the full SSI payment.
How retirement benefits work
Age and insured status are the gateways
Retirement benefits can begin as early as age 62. You also need enough covered work credits to be insured. SSA uses your earnings record to determine whether you have the required credits; the exact answer depends on your work history, not simply your current age or the fact that you have paid taxes in one year.
Your earnings record and claiming age set the amount
SSA calculates retirement benefits using the highest 35 years of covered earnings in your record. The age you claim then changes the monthly amount. Starting before full retirement age produces a permanent reduction compared with the amount payable at full retirement age. Delaying after full retirement age can increase the monthly benefit, subject to the program’s rules. The SSA retirement planner explains how stopping work and claiming at different ages affect an individual estimate.

Retirement benefits are not needs-tested like SSI. Savings, a spouse’s help with rent, or ownership of a home do not by themselves disqualify you. The central variables are insured status, the earnings record, and claiming age.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many work credits do you need?
For SSDI
The answer depends on your age when the disability starts. SSA counts credits earned in covered employment and looks for enough recent credits as well as the overall insured status required for disability insurance. A credit earned many years ago may not satisfy the recent-work portion for an older applicant. Check your earnings record and the age-specific chart in SSA’s disability qualification guidance before assuming you are insured.

Retirement eligibility also depends on insured status, but it does not use SSDI’s age-based recent-work test. SSA reviews your lifetime covered earnings and credits to decide whether you qualify. The same credit can help establish retirement insurance even though it may be too old to satisfy an SSDI recent-work requirement.

For SSI
There is no work-credit requirement. Work can affect the income calculation, but a person who never worked can still be eligible if the age, blindness or disability, income, resource, and living-arrangement rules are met.
Can you receive disability and retirement benefits?
SSDI changes to retirement at full retirement age
SSDI is designed to cover the period before retirement. When you reach full retirement age, SSA automatically converts the disability benefit to retirement benefits. SSA does not pay SSDI and retirement benefits simultaneously on the same earnings record; the conversion changes the program category rather than creating a second check.
SSI and Social Security may be paid together
SSI can supplement a low SSDI or retirement payment when the person remains within SSI’s income and resource limits. The Social Security payment is considered in the SSI calculation, so the SSI amount may be reduced. A change in wages, bank balances, living arrangements, or the Social Security amount must be reported because it can change or end SSI eligibility.

Different records can create different situations
SSDI and retirement benefits are generally tied to the worker’s own covered earnings record. SSI is a separate needs-based program. Whether a household receives one program, two programs, or a later conversion depends on each person’s medical status, age, earnings record, and finances; there is no universal “disability plus retirement” amount.
Applying: choose the route that matches the program
Before you start
- Identify the program or programs that fit: SSDI for disability with recent work credits, SSI for financial need with age, blindness, or disability, and retirement for age and insured status.
- Gather your Social Security number, medical providers and treatment dates for a disability claim, work and earnings information, bank and property information for SSI, and a preferred start date for retirement.
- Review your earnings record so you know whether missing or incorrect wages could affect insured status or the benefit estimate.
Submit an SSDI or SSI claim
- Use SSA’s current online application route when you meet its eligibility conditions.
- If the online pathway does not accept your situation, contact SSA for a telephone or office appointment. Online filing is not available for every SSDI or SSI applicant.
- Describe medical conditions, treatment, medications, work history, and functional limitations consistently. SSA may request records or additional information after the initial filing.
- For SSI, report income, resources, household support, and living arrangements accurately; those facts affect the payment even when the medical requirement is met.
Apply for retirement
- Decide whether starting at 62, waiting until full retirement age, or delaying longer fits your income needs and longevity expectations.
- Use your covered earnings record and SSA’s retirement estimate to compare claiming ages.
- Choose the start date carefully: claiming before full retirement age reduces the monthly amount, while delaying after full retirement age may increase it.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming a diagnosis guarantees SSDI. SSA evaluates duration, severity, and work-credit insurance; a diagnosis alone is not an approval.
- Treating SSI like earned insurance. SSI does not require work credits, but its financial test can disqualify someone with significant countable income or resources.
- Using an old SSI dollar limit. Federal rates, exclusions, resource limits, and state supplements change. Confirm the current figures with SSA before budgeting.
- Confusing four annual credits with four credits for every worker. Four is the 2026 annual maximum under the stated earnings threshold; SSDI still requires an age-specific recent-work pattern.
- Expecting SSDI and retirement checks to stack. SSDI converts to retirement at full retirement age on the same record rather than producing two simultaneous benefits.
- Failing to report changes for SSI. New wages, a different living arrangement, an inheritance, or a change in Social Security income can alter eligibility and should be reported promptly.
A practical decision checklist
- If you became disabled and worked recently, investigate SSDI and check the age-specific credit requirement.
- If you are disabled, blind, or at least the applicable aged threshold but have little income and few resources, investigate SSI even if you have no work history.
- If you are at least 62 and have enough covered work, compare retirement claiming ages rather than assuming 62 is automatically best.
- If you already receive SSDI, plan for the automatic conversion at full retirement age and review how that change interacts with any SSI payment.
- If you receive SSI plus Social Security, monitor countable income and resources because the programs remain subject to separate rules.
Bottom line
SSDI is an earned, work-insured disability benefit; SSI is a means-tested safety-net payment; retirement benefits are earned through covered work and adjusted for claiming age. Work credits are essential for SSDI and retirement but irrelevant to SSI, while income and resources can reduce or eliminate SSI. Start with the program’s qualifying test, verify your earnings record, and use SSA’s current rules before making an application or claiming decision.
