An unmarried child may qualify for Social Security on a parent’s retirement or disability record, or as the survivor of a deceased insured worker. Ordinary benefits usually end at 18, but a full-time K–12 student may continue through the school term ending after the student turns 19, and a disability that began before age 22 can support benefits into adulthood. The payment is tied to the worker’s record and the family maximum, not to the child’s age alone.
Who can receive Social Security benefits as a child?
Social Security child benefits are dependent or survivor benefits paid from a parent’s insured work record. The parent must be entitled to retirement or disability benefits, or must have died after earning enough work credits covered by Social Security. The child is generally required to be unmarried and to fit one of the age or disability categories below.

Children of a retired worker
A child can qualify when a parent is receiving Social Security retirement benefits. The child’s own work history is not the basis for this dependent benefit; the parent’s earnings record and primary insurance amount (PIA) are.

Children of a disabled worker
A child can qualify when a parent receives Social Security disability benefits. A child younger than 18 does not need a separate disability finding for ordinary dependent eligibility. The Social Security Administration states that it does not need to consider a child’s disability when deciding whether the child qualifies as a dependent.

Children of a deceased worker
A survivor child may qualify when a parent dies after sufficient covered work. Survivor benefits use different payment percentages from benefits paid while a parent is living, although the family maximum still applies.
Which family relationships can count?
Biological children are not the only possible beneficiaries. Depending on the facts and SSA’s dependency rules, qualifying relationships can include adopted children, stepchildren, grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Form SSA-4 asks you to identify the relationship so SSA can apply the correct rule.
Age limits: when do child benefits stop?
Age is the most common reason a child’s benefit ends, but the exact date depends on school status and disability onset.

Age 18 through 19 as a full-time K–12 student
Benefits can continue after 18 when the child is a full-time student in an elementary or secondary school. SSA’s rule generally allows payment through the end of the school term in which the student turns 19, subject to SSA’s definition of full-time attendance and other requirements. College attendance does not create this particular student extension.
At any age when disability began before 22
An adult child may qualify if a disability began before age 22. The adult child is generally unmarried, and the parent must be retired, disabled or deceased. SSA describes this as a separate disabled-adult-child pathway, not an extension granted merely because the person is over 18.
SSA’s public benefits description says: “Benefits stop when your child reaches age 18 unless that child is a student or has a disability.”

The critical date for the adult-child category is when the disabling condition began, not simply when SSA later approved the claim. Medical evidence must establish onset before the 22nd birthday, and SSA applies its disability rules to the adult claim.

How much does a child receive?
There is no single child-benefit rate based only on age. SSA starts with the worker’s primary insurance amount, then applies the percentage for the type of claim and the family-maximum formula. The number of people drawing benefits on the same record can reduce each person’s payment.
Typical percentage rules
| Claim type | Typical maximum before the family maximum | What determines the actual amount |
|---|---|---|
| Child of a living retired worker | Up to 50% of the worker’s PIA | The worker’s PIA, other eligible beneficiaries and the applicable family maximum |
| Child of a living disabled worker | Up to 50% of the worker’s PIA | The worker’s PIA, other eligible beneficiaries and the applicable family maximum |
| Survivor child of a deceased worker | Up to 75% of the worker’s PIA | The survivor calculation, the worker’s PIA and the family maximum |
| Disabled adult child | Varies according to whether the parent is living or deceased | The parent’s record, claim type and family maximum |
These are program percentages, not guaranteed checks. A family with several eligible children, a spouse and other auxiliaries may hit the family maximum. SSA then reduces the individual benefits under the applicable formula. A child’s age by itself cannot tell you the dollar amount.
What the latest averages show
SSA’s December 2025 statistics, published in 2026, provide a useful population reference. They are averages across beneficiaries, not promises for a particular family.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Beneficiary group | Number of beneficiaries | Average monthly benefit |
|---|---|---|
| All child beneficiaries | 3,719,370 | $966.38 |
| Children under 18 | 2,407,867 | $893.53 |
| Students ages 18–19 | 91,563 | $1,094.19 |
| Disabled adult children | 1,219,940 | $1,100.58 |
The higher or lower average for a group does not mean SSA pays a fixed amount to everyone in that category. Differences in workers’ earnings histories, survivor status and family composition drive the individual result.

Why the family maximum can lower a child’s check
The family maximum limits the total benefits payable on one worker’s record. It applies to auxiliary benefits, such as a child’s payment while a parent is living, and to survivor benefits. When only one child is entitled, the payment may be closer to the applicable percentage of the PIA. When several children or other family members qualify, SSA may reduce each person’s amount so the combined total stays within the maximum.
The maximum is calculated from the worker’s earnings record using a formula with annual bend points published by SSA’s Office of the Chief Actuary. Because those bend points and the family’s beneficiary count matter, an estimate based only on the parent’s current monthly check can be wrong. Ask SSA for the family benefit calculation when another person files, a beneficiary becomes ineligible or a new survivor claim is added.

Use SSA Form SSA-4, Application for Child’s Insurance Benefits. The form asks for identifying information and the relationship between the child and the worker. The evidence list changes with the claim type, so gather documents before contacting SSA.

Confirm whether the parent is receiving retirement or disability benefits or whether the parent died after sufficient covered work.
- Collect the child’s basic information. SSA-4 requests the child’s date of birth, Social Security number and relationship to the worker.
- Document the relationship. Be prepared to provide birth, adoption, stepchild or dependency records that establish the relationship claimed on SSA-4.
- Document a survivor claim when applicable. A death record and information about the deceased worker may be required so SSA can establish survivor eligibility.
- Document student status for an 18–19-year-old. SSA may require school information showing full-time attendance in an elementary or secondary program and the expected end of the school term.
- Prepare medical evidence for a disabled adult child. SSA directs applicants to complete forms describing the medical condition and authorizing release of medical information. The evidence must address both the disability and the fact that it began before age 22.
- Submit the claim and respond to follow-up requests. SSA may request additional records or clarification. Keep copies of every form and note the date each document was sent.
Do not assume that a child’s existing medical diagnosis automatically proves disabled-adult-child eligibility. SSA must evaluate the condition under its disability rules and establish the required onset date.

How the three parent-status pathways differ
| Parent’s status | Child’s usual route | Main evidence focus | Payment framework |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retired | Unmarried child under 18, qualifying student through the relevant school term, or disabled adult child with onset before 22 | Relationship, age, school attendance or medical onset | Generally up to 50% of the PIA before family-maximum adjustment |
| Disabled | The same age and disabled-adult-child categories | Relationship, age, school attendance or medical onset | Generally up to 50% of the PIA before family-maximum adjustment |
| Deceased | Unmarried survivor child under 18, qualifying student, or disabled adult child with onset before 22 | Relationship, death, age, school attendance or medical onset | Generally up to 75% of the PIA for a survivor child before family-maximum adjustment |
The same child can move between categories as circumstances change. For example, a child may receive a dependent benefit while a parent is disabled, then be evaluated for a survivor benefit if that parent dies. SSA recalculates the benefit under the new status rather than simply carrying over the old percentage.
Social Security child benefits are not SSI
Social Security child benefits described here are based on a parent’s insured work record. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for a child with a disability is a different program. SSI has separate income and resource rules and does not depend on the parent having a retirement, disability or survivor record that creates a child benefit.
A disabled child’s family may need to examine both programs, but approval for one does not establish eligibility for the other. Keep the applications and evidence requirements separate, especially when the child is under 18 and the question is whether the child qualifies as a dependent rather than as a disabled SSI recipient.
Common problems that delay or reduce payment
- Waiting to file. A child’s eligibility may depend on the parent’s retirement, disability entitlement or death date. Contact SSA promptly rather than assuming payment will begin automatically.
- Using age as the only test. Turning 18 does not always end benefits, but the student extension requires full-time K–12 attendance and normally ends with the school term in which the student turns 19.
- Confusing a diagnosis with onset before 22. A disabled-adult-child claim needs evidence that the disabling condition began before age 22, not merely evidence that the adult is disabled now.
- Ignoring other beneficiaries. The family maximum can reduce a child’s amount when a spouse, another child or another auxiliary or survivor is paid on the same record.
- Failing to report status changes. Changes in school attendance, marital status, living arrangements or medical circumstances can affect entitlement. Ask SSA what must be reported for the specific claim.
- Expecting the population average. The December 2025 averages describe groups of beneficiaries and cannot substitute for a calculation using the worker’s earnings record and family maximum.
What to ask SSA before relying on an estimate
When you speak with SSA, ask for the worker’s primary insurance amount, the percentage used for the child’s claim, the family maximum, the number of people currently entitled and the event that will end or change the benefit. For a student, ask exactly how SSA wants school attendance verified. For a disabled adult child, ask which medical and release forms are required and what evidence can establish onset before age 22.
Those details turn a general rule into a case-specific answer. They also help explain why two children with the same age and the same parent status can receive different monthly amounts.
