Social Security at 62 vs. Full Retirement Age: Which Is Right for You?

There is no universally best claiming age. Starting Social Security at 62 gives you income sooner but permanently reduces your monthly worker benefit. Waiting until your full retirement age (FRA) avoids that early-claim reduction, while delaying beyond FRA can increase the monthly benefit until age 70. The right choice depends on your official estimates, cash needs, work plans, health and longevity, taxes, and the effect on a spouse or survivor.

Use your personal estimates from the Social Security Administration (SSA) at age 62, your FRA, and age 70. Then compare the lifetime trade-off rather than treating any generic example as a forecast.

What changes when you claim at 62, full retirement age, or 70?

Your claiming age changes the size of each monthly payment, not the underlying earnings record used to calculate your benefit. A claim at 62 starts payments as soon as you are eligible for retirement benefits, but the reduction for claiming before FRA generally lasts for life. Claiming at FRA gives you your unreduced worker benefit. Delaying after FRA can increase the monthly amount through age 70; delayed retirement increases stop at 70, so waiting longer than that does not create an additional delayed-claim increase.

Starting earlier can be sensible when you need the cash, have limited other resources, or have reason to expect a shorter retirement. Waiting can be more valuable when you have savings or employment income to draw on, expect a long retirement, or are the higher earner whose larger benefit would protect a surviving spouse. These are timing choices, not rules that produce the same answer for every household.

“Weigh all the facts carefully before making the crucial decision about when to begin to receive Social Security benefits.” — Social Security Administration, When to Start Receiving Retirement Benefits

What is full retirement age?

Full retirement age is the age at which you qualify for your full scheduled worker benefit under Social Security’s rules. It is based on your year of birth, not simply on the age you choose to stop working. SSA says FRA is 67 for people attaining age 62 in 2026.

Birth year Full retirement age
1955 66 years, 2 months
1956 66 years, 4 months
1957 66 years, 6 months
1958 66 years, 8 months
1959 66 years, 10 months
1960 or later 67

The table above reflects SSA’s birth-year schedule. If you are close to a boundary, verify the precise month-based FRA in your SSA account before filing. Medicare eligibility remains tied to age 65 even when your FRA is 66 or 67.

How much can the age difference change your check?

Your amount depends on your lifetime covered earnings and the age at which you claim. SSA’s illustration for a person turning 62 in 2024, with a $2,000 benefit at an FRA of 67, shows how the timing changes the payment:

Claiming age Illustrative monthly benefit What the example shows
62 $1,400 About 30% lower than the $2,000 FRA amount
67 (FRA) $2,000 Unreduced benefit in this example
70 $2,480 $1,080 more per month than at 62; about 77% higher than the age-62 amount

These are nominal figures from an SSA example for someone turning 62 in 2024. They are not standard payments and do not predict your benefit. Your own estimates may be higher or lower because your earnings history, birth year, and claiming date differ.

How SSA determines your personal estimate

Your highest 35 earning years

SSA generally uses your highest 35 years of covered earnings. If you have fewer than 35 years with earnings, years without earnings count as zeros, which lowers the average used in the benefit formula. Continuing to work can help when a new, higher-earning year replaces a lower year in that 35-year record.

Why an estimate can change

  • A later year of higher covered earnings may replace a low year or a zero.
  • Your estimate changes with the age you select: 62, FRA, and 70 are different payment points.
  • Stopping work early can leave low or zero years in the calculation.
  • SSA estimates rely on assumptions about future earnings if you are still working; update the estimate when your plans change.

Open your official SSA estimate and record the monthly amount shown for each relevant age. Do not substitute the $1,400, $2,000, or $2,480 figures above for your own numbers.

A practical comparison method

Build the decision around the questions below. Put the answers in a spreadsheet or a written cash-flow plan so that a large monthly figure does not obscure a short-term need or a household consequence.

1. Compare the three official estimates

  1. Sign in to your SSA account and retrieve your retirement estimate.
  2. Write down the projected monthly benefit at 62, your exact FRA, and 70.
  3. Confirm the estimates use the correct earnings record and birth date.
  4. Save the date of the estimate; future earnings, policy updates, or corrected records can change it.

2. Identify the income gap

List essential monthly spending, irregular costs, debt payments, and the income available from work, pensions, savings, and other sources. If claiming at 62 is the only way to cover necessities, the reduced benefit may be a necessary insurance against running out of cash. If you can fund the gap from reliable assets without creating a later shortfall, delaying becomes easier to consider.

3. Stress-test longevity

Social Security is paid for life. SSA says about one in three 65-year-olds today will live to at least 90 and about one in seven to at least 95; the publication uses the word “today” without a printed publication year. A larger payment that continues for decades can matter more than a series of smaller checks in the early years, particularly when other assets are finite.

4. Include taxes and investment assumptions

A simple break-even calculation divides the cumulative payments you give up by waiting by the larger monthly payment you receive later. That result is only a scenario, not a universal age. Taxes, cost-of-living adjustments, investment returns, inflation, the order in which you spend assets, and the possibility of living past the calculated point all change the comparison. SSA’s illustrative example does not settle those assumptions for you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Account for employment plans

Decide whether you will work after claiming, how much you expect to earn, and when you reach FRA. Work and claiming are separate decisions: you can claim while working, but the earnings test may temporarily withhold benefits before FRA.

Working while receiving Social Security before FRA

For 2026, SSA applies an earnings test to wages and net self-employment earnings for beneficiaries who are under FRA. The limits are year-specific, so check the current year’s figures before making a filing decision.

Situation in 2026 Annual earnings limit Withholding rule
Under FRA for the entire year $24,480 $1 in benefits withheld for each $2 earned above the limit
Reach FRA during the year $65,160, counting earnings before the FRA month $1 withheld for each $3 earned above the limit
Starting with the month you reach FRA No earnings-test limit Earnings no longer reduce benefits under this test

Withholding is not necessarily a permanent loss of every dollar. SSA says it later recalculates benefits to account for months in which payments were withheld because of excess earnings. Continuing to work can also improve your underlying record if new earnings replace lower years.

What counts and what does not

The test concerns wages and net earnings from self-employment. Other income, such as investment income, pensions, and capital gains, is not treated as covered work earnings for this particular test. Ask SSA how it will classify an unusual payment, such as a bonus, severance, or deferred compensation, before relying on a general rule.

The first-year problem

If you retire partway through a year, the annual formula can produce an unexpected result because earnings earlier in that year still count. SSA may apply a special monthly rule in some retirement situations. Contact SSA with your actual retirement month and earnings rather than assuming the annual limit alone answers the question.

Marriage, divorce, and survivor protection

A single person’s comparison is not enough for a married, divorced, or widowed claimant. Worker, spouse, and survivor benefits have different eligibility and filing rules.

Spousal benefits and deemed filing

For people turning 62 on or after January 2, 2016, SSA’s deemed-filing rules generally require someone eligible for both a worker benefit and a spouse benefit to apply for both. You usually cannot claim only a spousal benefit while allowing your own worker benefit to keep growing under the old “restricted application” strategy. The exact outcome depends on entitlement and filing dates, so do not model a couple’s plan from a generic example.

Why the higher earner’s age matters

If the higher earner delays, the household may receive smaller payments for a period, but the resulting larger benefit can provide stronger survivor protection. When one spouse dies, the survivor may receive a benefit based on the deceased worker’s record, subject to survivor rules. Compare the likely survivor income, not just the two checks received while both spouses are alive.

Divorced and widowed readers

Benefits based on an ex-spouse’s record and survivor benefits have their own eligibility, duration-of-marriage, remarriage, and filing requirements. Survivor benefits are not subject to deemed filing in the same way as retirement and spouse benefits. Ask SSA for a case-specific estimate before choosing an age.

Medicare timing is a separate decision

Delaying Social Security does not automatically delay Medicare enrollment. Medicare eligibility generally begins at 65, even if your FRA is 67. SSA advises people who are not receiving Social Security at 65 to apply for Medicare three months before turning 65.

Employer group health coverage can change when Part B enrollment is appropriate and whether a late-enrollment penalty could apply. The answer depends on the employer’s size, whether the coverage is active employment coverage, and your circumstances. Coordinate with the employer benefits office and Medicare rather than assuming that postponing Social Security postpones every enrollment deadline.

Common situations and how the choice changes

You need income immediately

If you cannot meet essential expenses from work and other resources, claiming at 62 may protect housing, food, and medical cash flow. Before filing, check whether a short-term spending reduction, part-time work, or a planned withdrawal from savings can bridge the gap to FRA without creating a larger later deficit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are healthy, have family longevity, and can wait

A delay can buy a larger lifetime payment and may improve survivor protection. Use a conservative longevity assumption and test whether your assets can support the waiting period without forcing high-interest debt or an unsustainable withdrawal rate.

You plan to keep working

Compare the earnings-test withholding with the value of waiting. If your work income covers expenses, delaying may avoid a reduced benefit and allow additional earnings years to replace low years. If you claim anyway, report expected wages accurately and monitor SSA’s withholding and later adjustment.

You are the lower earner in a couple

The lower earner’s own benefit, potential spouse benefit, and survivor outcome may point to a different age than the higher earner’s. Review both records together; optimizing one person’s check in isolation can reduce the household’s protection after the first death.

You have a shorter expected lifespan

Earlier payments may produce more total cash over the years you expect to receive them. This is not a medical prediction. Consider current health, family history, care needs, and the value of guaranteed income without assuming an exact date of death.

Claims that can lead to a bad decision

  • “Everyone should claim at 62.” A lower check can be costly if you live into your 80s, 90s, or beyond.
  • “Everyone should wait until 70.” Delaying can be unrealistic when cash is needed for essentials or health circumstances are poor.
  • “The break-even age proves the answer.” Break-even depends on taxes, COLAs, investment returns, inflation, and longevity assumptions.
  • “Stopping work means my benefit is fixed.” A later high-earning year can replace a lower year in the 35-year record.
  • “Medicare waits until I claim Social Security.” Medicare enrollment has its own age-65 timeline.
  • “The earnings limit permanently confiscates benefits.” SSA says it later recalculates benefits for months withheld under the earnings test, although timing and cash flow still matter.
  • “A generic online calculator is enough.” Use your official SSA record and verify unusual household circumstances directly with SSA.

A filing checklist

  1. Confirm your birth date and exact FRA in your SSA record.
  2. Download estimates at 62, FRA, and 70.
  3. Review the earnings history and identify zero or unusually low years.
  4. Build a monthly cash-flow budget through age 70, including taxes and health costs.
  5. List expected wages and determine whether the 2026 earnings test, or a later year’s limit, applies.
  6. If married, divorced, or widowed, obtain worker, spouse, and survivor estimates separately.
  7. Schedule Medicare enrollment around age 65, coordinating with employer coverage.
  8. Recheck volatile figures, including earnings-test limits, before submitting an application.
  9. Keep the estimates and assumptions used so you can explain the decision to a spouse or adviser.

How to make the final choice

Choose 62 when the value of immediate, guaranteed cash outweighs the permanent reduction and your plan can absorb a smaller check. Choose FRA when you want the unreduced worker benefit but do not need to pay for additional delay. Consider 70 when you can fund the waiting years and value the largest possible monthly benefit for a potentially long retirement or a surviving spouse.

The strongest decision is the one supported by your own SSA estimates, a realistic spending plan, and a household review. Revisit the analysis if your health, employment, marital status, earnings, or savings changes.
