Usually, yes. If you started Social Security retirement benefits at 62, the Social Security Administration (SSA) generally contacts you a few months before 65 and automatically enrolls you in Medicare Part A and Part B when you become eligible. This automatic process applies in the 50 states, Washington, D.C., and listed U.S. territories. It does not apply the same way to residents of Puerto Rico or people living abroad, who generally must elect Part B themselves.
Claiming Social Security early does not choose your complete Medicare coverage. Part D prescription coverage is separate and never added automatically. Before 65, confirm whether you should keep or delay Part B because of current-employer coverage, stop health savings account (HSA) contributions before Medicare begins, and compare your Medicare plan options.

What claiming Social Security at 62 changes—and what it does not
Starting retirement benefits at 62 affects the amount of your monthly Social Security benefit. It does not give you a special Medicare plan, waive Medicare enrollment rules, or automatically select prescription coverage. Medicare eligibility generally begins at 65, regardless of whether you claimed Social Security at 62, 63, 64, or later.

If you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits, SSA says it will contact you a few months before Medicare eligibility. Its 2026 Retirement Benefits publication states: “If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) benefits, we’ll contact you a few months before you become eligible for Medicare and send you information.”

In the usual case, that notice confirms automatic enrollment in Original Medicare Parts A and B. You still must make separate decisions about prescription drugs, supplemental coverage, and whether another form of health insurance changes the right time to enroll in Part B.
When automatic enrollment applies
Residents of most U.S. locations
People already receiving Social Security are generally enrolled automatically in Parts A and B at 65 if they live in the 50 states, Washington, D.C., or a listed U.S. territory. Medicare information and a red-white-and-blue Medicare card should arrive before coverage begins. Review the card and notice rather than assuming every detail is correct.
Puerto Rico and people living outside the United States
Automatic-enrollment language differs for Puerto Rico and foreign-country residents. In these situations, you generally must elect Part B yourself. Missing the election can create a coverage delay and a late-enrollment penalty, so contact SSA before the month you turn 65 if you live in either location.

Automatic enrollment generally concerns Original Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). It does not automatically place you in a Medicare Advantage plan, add a Part D prescription plan, or buy a Medigap policy. Those are separate choices with their own enrollment rules and deadlines.
Your seven-month Initial Enrollment Period
The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) lasts seven months: the three months before your 65th-birthday month, your birthday month, and the three months afterward. The timing of your application affects when Part B starts.

| When you enroll during the IEP | General Part B start timing | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| One of the first three months before your birthday month | Generally the month you reach 65 | Use this window if you want coverage ready for your birthday month. |
| Your birthday month | Generally the month you reach 65, subject to the applicable effective-date rules | Do not assume signing up late in the month produces immediate coverage. |
| One of the three months after your birthday month | Generally the month after you sign up | Later enrollment can leave a gap after turning 65. |
SSA’s Part B effective-date chart gives the general pattern above. Your notice can contain an individualized effective date, so keep it with your Medicare card and verify any discrepancy with SSA.
A practical checklist for the months before 65
- About three months before your birthday month, check your mail and your Social Security account. Confirm that SSA has your current address and that the Medicare notice shows whether Parts A and B will be automatic.
- Read the Part B premium-deduction information. If you receive Social Security, Part B premiums are generally withheld from your benefit. The notice should explain the deduction and any income-related adjustment that applies to you.
- Ask your employer benefits office about your health plan. Find out whether coverage is based on your or your spouse’s current employment, whether the employer plan permits delaying Part B, and how enrollment or disenrollment must be documented.
- Decide how prescription coverage will work. Enroll in Part D or verify that your employer or another insurer provides creditable prescription coverage.
- Stop HSA contributions before Medicare coverage begins. Coordinate the effective date with payroll and tax records.
- Compare Medicare options after confirming your eligibility and dates. Check doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, premiums, deductibles, networks, and out-of-pocket limits before choosing additional coverage.
Can you delay Part B while still working?
Possibly, but do not decline Part B casually. The important exception is group health coverage based on the current employment of you or your spouse. That arrangement may give you a Special Enrollment Period to enroll in Part B later without the usual late-enrollment penalty.

Questions to ask the employer plan
- Is the coverage based on current employment, rather than retirement or former employment?
- Does the plan require Medicare to pay first or second once you turn 65?
- What written proof will be needed when you later enroll in Part B?
- When must you notify the plan or SSA that you are delaying Part B?
- Will delaying Part B change prescription coverage or make it non-creditable?
Get answers from the benefits administrator before refusing automatic enrollment. A plan described as retiree coverage, COBRA, Marketplace coverage, or another continuation arrangement is not automatically treated the same as current-employment group coverage. Each arrangement requires separate verification.
What happens if you delay without a qualifying reason?
SSA warns that failing to enroll when first eligible can cause both delayed coverage and a late-enrollment penalty. Its usual Part B calculation is an additional 10 percent of the Part B premium for each full 12-month period you could have had Part B but did not enroll. The surcharge can continue for as long as you have Part B. The exact premium and any income-related surcharge can change, so obtain current figures from Medicare or SSA.
Part D prescription coverage is a separate deadline
Part D is optional, but it is not automatic. SSA states: “We will not automatically enroll you in a Medicare prescription drug plan (Part D). Part D is optional, and you must elect this coverage.”

You can obtain drug coverage through a stand-alone Part D plan or through a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription benefits. If you instead rely on an employer, union, or other insurer, ask whether the coverage is creditable. Going without Part D or other creditable drug coverage can lead to a late-enrollment penalty when you later join a plan.
Request the plan’s annual creditable-coverage notice and keep it. A prescription plan can be creditable even when it is not identical to Part D, but you need the plan’s formal determination rather than your own assumption.
HSA contributions and Medicare’s effective date
Once Medicare coverage begins, you cannot contribute to an HSA. Existing HSA funds remain available for eligible medical expenses, but new contributions after Medicare coverage starts can create tax problems.
Coordinate the Medicare effective date with your payroll department and tax preparer. Do not rely only on the date you submit an application: confirm the actual coverage start date shown by Medicare. If you or your employer makes contributions near the transition, review whether an adjustment is needed.
Choosing coverage after Parts A and B
The principal choices at 65 are Original Medicare with additional coverage or Medicare Advantage (Part C). Claiming Social Security at 62 does not make one option preferable for everyone.

| Decision factor | Original Medicare plus Part D and possibly Medigap | Medicare Advantage (Part C) |
|---|---|---|
| Doctors and hospitals | Check whether providers accept Medicare; Medigap may help with covered cost sharing. | Check the plan’s network and whether referrals or prior authorization apply. |
| Prescription drugs | Usually a separate Part D plan; compare each drug with the plan formulary and pharmacy rules. | Many plans include drug coverage; use the plan’s formulary and pharmacy network. |
| Premiums and deductibles | Part B premiums, any Part D premium, and a possible Medigap premium; deductibles and cost sharing vary. | Premiums, deductibles, copayments, and covered services vary by plan and service area. |
| Out-of-pocket exposure | Original Medicare has no single annual out-of-pocket limit for Part A and Part B; supplemental coverage can change your exposure. | Plans have an annual maximum out-of-pocket limit for covered Medicare services, which varies by plan. |
| Travel | Original Medicare is often useful when seeing providers that accept Medicare in different parts of the United States; check Medigap and foreign-travel terms. | Routine care outside the service area may be restricted; examine emergency, urgent-care, and travel rules. |
| Medigap timing | Buying rights and medical underwriting can depend on your Medigap open-enrollment period and circumstances. | You generally do not pair Medigap with Medicare Advantage. |
Compare your actual doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, preferred pharmacies, travel pattern, budget, and tolerance for networks before enrolling. Medicare.gov and 1-800-MEDICARE provide current plan and enrollment information. A licensed counselor can help with an individualized comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Medicare premiums interact with Social Security
When you receive Social Security, Part B premiums are generally deducted directly from your monthly benefit. The amount is not fixed forever: standard premiums, Part D premiums, deductibles, and income-related monthly adjustment amounts (IRMAA) can change. Your Medicare notice should state the deduction that applies to you, and a later SSA notice may change it after an income review.
If a deduction looks wrong, compare the Medicare effective date, the premium notice, and your Social Security payment history. Contact SSA or Medicare rather than stopping a deduction yourself, because an unpaid premium can endanger coverage.

You have COBRA or retiree coverage
Do not assume these arrangements protect you from Part B or Part D penalties. Confirm the rules with the plan and Medicare before declining enrollment.
You live in Puerto Rico or abroad
Contact SSA about electing Part B yourself. Automatic-enrollment assumptions from the 50 states do not reliably apply.
You did not receive a notice
Verify your mailing address on your Social Security account, then contact SSA before your birthday month. A missing letter is not evidence that enrollment is unnecessary.
Where to verify dates, plans, and penalties
Use Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE for current premiums, plan availability, formularies, service areas, and enrollment assistance. Contact SSA for automatic-enrollment status, Part B elections, Social Security deductions, and residence-specific rules. Because premiums, IRMAA amounts, plan contracts, and effective dates can change, rely on the current notice and official account information rather than an older estimate.
