What the original $4 claim actually said
The 2023 report described a leaked Snapchat interface attributed to app leaker Alessandro Paluzzi. The screenshot showed three appearance choices: Match System, Always Light and Always Dark.

Gizchina interpreted the apparent Android rollout as potentially being tied to Snapchat+, at roughly $4 per month. That was an allegation about a possible future implementation—not a Snapchat announcement, verified checkout price, invoice or confirmed product requirement. The article itself warned readers to treat the leak cautiously.

Snapchat had already offered Dark Mode on iOS, while Android users had historically lacked an equally direct control. That made a dedicated Android appearance menu newsworthy, but it also raised concern that a basic comfort and accessibility option might become a paid upsell.

Is Dark Mode still behind Snapchat+?
Based on Snapchat’s current first-party documentation, no subscription is indicated. Its Dark Mode support page gives the same settings path for Android and iOS and tells users to select Always Dark.
That support page is the strongest evidence of the current user-facing product behavior as of August 18, 2026. A three-year-old leak cannot establish that users are currently billed for the feature.

How to turn on Snapchat Dark Mode
- Open Snapchat and tap your profile or avatar icon.
- Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Under My Account, tap App Appearance.
- Select Always Dark.
To return to the light theme, follow the same path and select Always Light. If your app offers Match System, that option lets Snapchat follow the phone’s system theme; it is not required for Dark Mode.
The exact visual result can vary by app version, operating system, account rollout and individual screen. A dark theme may be more comfortable for some people in low-light conditions, but battery impact depends on factors such as display technology, brightness and how Snapchat renders each screen.

What to do if App Appearance is missing
- Confirm that you are in Snapchat’s main Settings and looking under My Account.
- Update Snapchat through the device’s official app store.
- Fully close and reopen Snapchat, then restart the device if necessary.
- Check whether the phone uses an operating-system version supported by the current Snapchat release.
- Sign out and back in only after confirming that you know the password and can access account recovery.
- Contact Snapchat Support if the menu remains unavailable.
Feature visibility can differ because of an outdated build, gradual rollout, account-specific bugs, regional availability or a different app language and interface. Changing Android’s system-wide theme is not a guaranteed substitute for Snapchat’s own control.

If selecting Always Dark does not work
- Close and reopen Snapchat after saving the setting.
- Switch temporarily to Always Light, restart the app, then select Always Dark again.
- Check whether only particular screens remain light; that may indicate incomplete theme coverage rather than a failed setting.
- Report the behavior through official Snapchat Support.
If Snapchat shows a Snapchat+ promotion elsewhere, distinguish a general subscription advertisement from a screen that explicitly requires Snapchat+ for Dark Mode. A promotional prompt alone does not prove that the theme is paywalled.

The “$4 a month” story was an unverified April 14, 2023 rumor built around a leaked interface and an interpretation of a possible Snapchat+ gate. It was not proof that Snapchat charged every Android user, or that Dark Mode became a paid requirement.

For readers who only want a darker Snapchat interface, use Profile → Settings → My Account → App Appearance → Always Dark. Snapchat+ may be worth considering for its separate customization, badge, early-access and other subscription features, but Dark Mode alone is not a reason to subscribe based on Snapchat’s current official instructions.
