Small satellite launch vehicles are rockets designed to place relatively light spacecraft into low Earth orbit (LEO). They reach orbit by burning several stages in sequence, dropping each empty stage, and using a final stage to make precise velocity and steering corrections. Skyroot’s Vikram-I and ISRO’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) follow that basic logic but offer different payload limits, orbit options, mission-control features and flight records.

The practical lesson for a satellite operator is that a published payload number is only a starting point. The suitable launcher depends on mass, altitude, inclination, deployment accuracy, schedule, integration constraints and whether the mission is a shared ride or a dedicated launch.

What makes a launch vehicle “small”?

A small launch vehicle is optimized for lighter payloads than a heavy orbital rocket. Its customers may include Earth-observation spacecraft, technology demonstrators, communications satellites and scientific payloads. Rather than maximizing total lift, the design emphasizes a simpler launch campaign, flexible deployment arrangements and infrastructure that can support more frequent missions.

“Small” describes the launcher’s intended payload class, not a suborbital rocket. The vehicle still has to accelerate its payload through the atmosphere, follow a guided trajectory and supply enough velocity for the spacecraft to remain in orbit. Once a satellite is in LEO, it is continuously falling around Earth; its sideways velocity keeps the ground below it curving away.

LEO is not one standard destination. Operators must specify altitude, orbital inclination, the desired separation conditions and any requirements for multiple deployment points. A launcher that can carry a particular mass to one orbit may carry less to another, so headline capacity should never be treated as a universal guarantee.

How a small orbital rocket works

1. Liftoff and guided ascent

The first stage produces the high thrust needed to leave the launch pad and climb through the dense lower atmosphere. Guidance systems gradually turn the vehicle away from a purely vertical path. The rocket trades some upward motion for horizontal motion, building the trajectory needed for orbit while continuing to gain altitude.

2. Staging removes dead weight

Every spent stage contains tanks, motors, propellant residue, wiring and structural hardware that no longer help the payload. When a stage has completed its burn, it separates. The remaining stages no longer have to accelerate that empty mass, so the same propellant can produce a greater change in velocity for the upper vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the central reason orbital launchers use multiple stages. A single-stage rocket would have to carry all of its tanks and engines for the entire ascent, making the mass problem much harder. Staging divides the job into manageable burns and discards hardware as soon as it is no longer useful.

3. Upper-stage insertion and targeting

The final powered stage, sometimes called an upper or terminal stage, completes the velocity needed for the target orbit. It also controls the timing and direction of the final burn. Small differences in velocity and pointing can change the resulting altitude, inclination and separation conditions, so upper-stage control is critical even after the rocket has left the atmosphere.

4. Solid and liquid propulsion perform different jobs

Solid motors generally offer compact hardware, high readiness and propellant that can remain stored in the motor. Their burn is planned before ignition and they are not normally restarted in flight. Liquid engines require tanks, valves and feed systems, but they can support more precise throttling or steering and, when designed for it, multiple starts.

Many small launchers combine these characteristics: solid stages provide the major early impulses, while a liquid upper or terminal module handles fine velocity adjustment and orbital placement. The combination can balance manufacturing simplicity with the precision needed by satellite operators.

Vikram-I: four stages and a restartable liquid upper stage

Vehicle architecture

ISRO reports that Skyroot’s Vikram-I has four stages: three solid stages followed by a liquid fourth stage powered by the Raman-I engine. Skyroot describes the launcher as an all-carbon-composite vehicle with a restartable liquid upper stage.

Carbon-composite structures can reduce structural mass compared with conventional metallic designs, although the useful result for a mission is the complete vehicle performance after accounting for tanks, engines, avionics, separation systems and payload hardware. The important architectural point is the division of labor: three solid stages provide the main ascent burns, and the liquid fourth stage performs the final, precise work.

What “restartable” changes

A restartable upper stage can shut down and ignite again after a coast period. That allows a mission to perform more than one carefully timed burn instead of treating the final insertion as one continuous event. In practical terms, restartability can help the vehicle deploy satellites into different orbital conditions, release payloads at separate points or make a correction after a coast phase.

Restartability does not mean every mission will use multiple burns. The flight plan, orbit and payload separation sequence determine whether another ignition is useful. It also does not eliminate the need for accurate guidance, tracking and payload separation systems; it adds another option for executing the mission.

Published payload options

Skyroot’s current launch-services information advertises up to 350 kg to LEO for a Vikram-I mission and rideshare slots for payloads up to 50 kg per slot. These are provider-stated capacities, not a promise that every 350 kg payload can reach every LEO altitude or inclination. The same page describes access to low-to-mid inclinations from India.

A rideshare customer shares the launch with other payloads and accepts the mission’s common orbit and separation plan. A dedicated customer has the vehicle’s payload capacity for one mission and can negotiate a deployment profile around its own spacecraft, subject to the launcher’s performance and range constraints.

Vikram-I’s reported orbital milestone

ISRO’s official report says Vikram-I lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on July 18, 2026, at 12:05:30 PM. The flight made Skyroot the first private Indian company to achieve an orbital launch from Indian soil, according to ISRO. SCOPE and Grahaa were injected into LEO, while other payloads supported in-orbit experiments.

That flight is a demonstrated orbital mission, but one successful launch is not the same as a long statistical reliability record. Customers evaluating a mission should distinguish between an achieved milestone, an advertised capability and a mature, repeatedly demonstrated service.

ISRO’s SSLV: a different small-launch option

Published specifications

Item ISRO-published SSLV information
Length 34 m
Diameter 2 m
Lift-off mass Approximately 120 tonnes
Single-satellite mode Up to 500 kg to a 500 km planar orbit
Multiple-satellite mode Multiple satellites from 10 kg to 300 kg to a 500 km planar orbit
Main propulsion Three HTPB solid stages
Terminal module Liquid Velocity Trimming Module using MMH and MON-3

The SSLV’s first three stages use HTPB solid propellant. Its VTM is a liquid module with eight 50 N thrusters for reaction control and eight 50 N axial thrusters for adding velocity. Those small thrusters let the terminal module make the final attitude and velocity adjustments needed for payload deployment.

Flight evidence and development

SSLV-D2 successfully placed EOS-07, Janus-1 and AzaadiSAT-2 into a 450 km circular orbit on February 10, 2023. ISRO presents SSLV as a low-cost, quick-turnaround launcher with flexibility for multiple satellites, launch-on-demand feasibility and minimal launch infrastructure requirements.

On December 30, 2025, ISRO static-tested an improved SS3 stage. The carbon-epoxy motor case reduced stage mass and was reported to improve SSLV payload performance by 90 kg. The 108-second test captured about 233 measurements and qualified the stage for flight induction. “Improved payload performance” is a vehicle-level development result; it does not change the published orbit and payload conditions for every mission.

Vikram-I versus SSLV

Comparison point Vikram-I SSLV
Stages Four: three solid stages and a liquid fourth stage Three HTPB solid stages plus a liquid VTM
Upper-stage feature Raman-I liquid stage described as restartable VTM with eight 50 N reaction-control and eight 50 N axial thrusters
Published payload Up to 350 kg to LEO; rideshare slots up to 50 kg Up to 500 kg to a 500 km planar orbit; multiple satellites from 10 kg to 300 kg to that orbit
Orbit information Low-to-mid inclinations from India are advertised; exact performance depends on mission Published reference capability is a 500 km planar orbit; SSLV-D2 reached a 450 km circular orbit
Vehicle dimensions Not stated in the cited information 34 m long, 2 m diameter, approximately 120 tonnes at lift-off
Demonstrated record in the supplied dates Orbital launch from Indian soil reported on July 18, 2026 SSLV-D2 orbital mission on February 10, 2023

These figures do not make one launcher universally better. A 350 kg dedicated Vikram-I mission and a 500 kg SSLV mission are not interchangeable offers: the orbit, spacecraft interface, deployment sequence, launch window and available date can matter more than the maximum number in a specification sheet.

How to choose between a rideshare and a dedicated mission

Payload mass and packaging

Start with the spacecraft’s launch mass, dimensions, center of gravity, separation hardware and any dispensers or adapters. A payload below a rideshare slot limit may still need a particular interface or environmental qualification. A heavier spacecraft may fit within a launcher’s total capacity but require a dedicated mission because of integration or deployment constraints.

Altitude and inclination

State the target altitude and inclination before comparing vehicles. “LEO” covers many possible orbits. A provider’s advertised capacity is meaningful only with its associated orbit, trajectory and launch-site assumptions. Inclination also affects the direction in which the vehicle must fly and the energy required to reach the orbit.

Deployment control

Rideshare lowers the need to fill an entire rocket but places several customers under one common flight plan. A dedicated mission offers more control over timing and separation, although the customer still works within launch-safety, range and vehicle limits. A restartable upper stage can add flexibility to a dedicated or multi-payload sequence, but the provider must confirm the exact profile.

Schedule and availability

“Launch on demand” describes an operational goal, not an unconditional delivery date. The spacecraft must complete design reviews, testing, licensing, shipment and integration. The launch provider must also have a vehicle, a compatible slot and an approved range window. Skyroot’s stated process says its 2026 manifest is filling, so a prospective customer should ask for a current slot rather than infer availability from a published capacity.

How a commercial launch engagement proceeds

Skyroot describes a process that begins with an NDA and mission details, followed by a quotation and consultation, then a Launch Service Agreement. A customer should prepare a concise mission package before the first discussion:

  1. Provide spacecraft mass, dimensions, interface requirements and the desired altitude and inclination.
  2. Identify whether the payload needs a rideshare slot or a dedicated mission, and list any separation sequence or restart-burn requirements.
  3. Ask which orbit, adapter, environmental tests, documentation and delivery date are included in the quotation.
  4. Review the Launch Service Agreement for responsibilities covering payload safety, insurance, licensing, schedule changes, acceptance tests and launch-failure remedies.
  5. Confirm the latest vehicle configuration and performance analysis before freezing the spacecraft design.

Skyroot’s cited launch-services information does not publish prices or an affiliate commission program. Therefore, no responsible budget number can be inferred from the payload limits alone. The quotation should identify recurring launch-service charges and mission-specific integration or regulatory work separately.

Common misunderstandings and failure points

  • Confusing payload capacity with orbit capacity: the maximum mass applies to a stated orbit and trajectory, not every LEO mission.
  • Treating rideshare as a miniature dedicated launch: a rideshare payload normally accepts a shared deployment plan and schedule.
  • Assuming restartability guarantees any orbit: a restartable stage provides another burn option; guidance, propellant margins and mission rules still determine what is feasible.
  • Using a development-test result as a service promise: the reported 90 kg SS3 improvement came from a 2025 static test and flight-induction qualification, not a guarantee for every customer mission.
  • Equating one successful flight with reliability statistics: ask for the provider’s current flight history, anomaly record and mission-assurance data.
  • Planning around a headline date: spacecraft readiness, licensing, weather, range availability and integration can all move a launch.

What “small rockets can carry” really means

The headline figures in this comparison span 50 kg rideshare slots, 350 kg advertised Vikram-I LEO capacity, SSLV’s 10–300 kg multiple-satellite mode and its published 500 kg single-satellite capability to a 500 km planar orbit. Those numbers describe different products and conditions rather than a single ranking.

For an operator, the useful question is not “Which rocket lifts the most?” It is “Which vehicle can place this spacecraft, from this launch site, into this orbit, on a schedule and interface the mission can support?” That framing prevents a nominal capacity from hiding an unsuitable inclination, an incompatible dispenser or an unavailable launch slot.

Bottom line for launch-vehicle decisions

Small launch vehicles make orbit practical by combining staging, solid-motor ascent burns and a controllable terminal stage. Vikram-I uses three solid stages and a restartable Raman-I liquid fourth stage, with Skyroot advertising up to 350 kg to LEO and rideshare slots up to 50 kg. SSLV uses three HTPB solid stages and a liquid VTM, with ISRO publishing up to 500 kg to a 500 km planar orbit and documenting the SSLV-D2 mission to a 450 km circular orbit.

The right choice follows the mission, not the largest payload number. Compare the required orbit, inclination, deployment precision, schedule, integration burden and demonstrated flight record, then verify current performance, availability and commercial terms directly with the launch provider.
