SK hynix’s third-quarter 2026 operating profit rose 632% year over year to 83.3338 trillion won, roughly seven times the 11.3834 trillion won recorded a year earlier. The headline does not describe net income: net income increased 216% to 39.7756 trillion won. Revenue reached a quarterly record of 104.6155 trillion won, the first time it exceeded 100 trillion won, as artificial-intelligence data centers drove demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DDR5, conventional DRAM and enterprise SSDs.
The results show that AI-memory demand is producing extraordinary earnings today. They do not prove that hyperscaler spending, memory prices or profit margins will stay at this level. Investors continue to weigh the possibility of slower AI infrastructure spending, heavy industry capacity additions and stronger Chinese competition.

The seven-fold description refers specifically to operating profit. SK hynix reported 83.3338 trillion won in third-quarter 2026 operating profit, up 632% from 11.3834 trillion won in the third quarter of 2025. Net income was 39.7756 trillion won, a 216% year-over-year increase. The reported operating margin was 80%.

| Revenue | 104.6155 trillion won | First quarter above 100 trillion won |
| Operating profit | 83.3338 trillion won | Up 632% |
| Net income | 39.7756 trillion won | Up 216% |

Several forces reinforced one another: customers bought more memory for AI servers, higher-value products made up a larger share of sales, and product prices rose. SK hynix says server DDR5 and initial HBM4 shipments lifted DRAM, while 321-layer TLC enterprise SSDs and other high-capacity data-center products supported NAND.

HBM and server memory carried the mix
AI accelerators use HBM to move data quickly between processors and memory. Server DDR5 supplies the broader system around those accelerators. Together, they expose SK hynix to the growth of AI-computing clusters rather than only to the traditional PC and smartphone cycles. The company says major technology companies are increasing AI-infrastructure investment and that additional supply requests continue to arrive.
Is the AI chip boom real, or could it be a bubble?
The earnings report is evidence of real, paying demand for AI memory, but it cannot settle the bubble question. SK hynix links further infrastructure spending to revenue that customers are generating from AI services. That supports a continuing-demand case, while the scale of planned spending by hyperscalers creates a significant financing and utilization risk if returns disappoint.
Technical difficulty in leading-edge processes and the long time needed to build factories also limit how quickly supply can respond. SK hynix expects demand to exceed supply through 2030. That is management guidance, not an independently verified forecast, and it could change if customer orders, prices or capital spending weaken.

What does the report mean for HBM4 and DDR5?
SK hynix expects HBM4 to overtake HBM3E in both shipment volume and revenue in the fourth quarter of 2026, making HBM4 the mainstream product in its outlook. Initial HBM4 shipments already contributed to third-quarter DRAM growth.
HBM4 transition
A faster transition to HBM4 can protect SK hynix’s position with customers building new accelerator systems, but it also raises execution demands. Yield, packaging, qualification and customer delivery schedules all matter; a product becoming the mainstream offering is an expectation, not a guaranteed market outcome.
Server DDR5 demand
Server DDR5 benefits from the expansion of AI data centers even when it is not part of the accelerator package itself. Readers evaluating a physical component should distinguish a consumer DDR5 memory module from the much larger server-memory market discussed in the earnings release. Enterprise buyers also care about capacity, reliability and platform qualification, not just the DDR5 label.

How long could the memory shortage last?
SK hynix says the supply-demand structure in which demand exceeds supply could persist through 2030. Its reasoning is that advanced process development is difficult and new production facilities require long lead times. The company also expects 321-layer NAND to represent more than half of its domestic capacity in the fourth quarter.
That outlook describes a potential multi-year tight market, not a fixed shortage timetable. New factories, technology transitions, customer cancellations or weaker AI investment could change the balance sooner. NAND and DRAM can also follow different pricing paths, so a shortage in one product category should not be generalized to every memory chip.
Why did SK hynix shares fall after strong earnings?
Strong reported profit does not guarantee a higher share price. After an earlier quarterly report, Reuters reported that SK hynix shares fell about 9.6% in one day because record profit missed a very high analyst forecast. Investors questioned whether Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Oracle could maintain or finance hundreds of billions of dollars in planned AI infrastructure.

The same concern applies to the latest figures: markets price future earnings, not just the quarter that has ended. A result can be exceptional and still disappoint if investors expected an even larger number, faster HBM growth or higher future prices.

- Hyperscaler spending: customers could slow projects or struggle to earn returns from AI services.
- Capacity investment: industry-wide expansion could eventually create excess supply and pressure prices.
- Contract pricing: multi-year agreements improve volume visibility but can reduce exposure to short-term spot-price spikes.
- Competition: Samsung and SK hynix together account for about two-thirds of global memory-chip production, while Chinese suppliers are increasing competitive pressure, according to the Associated Press.
- Execution: HBM4 and advanced NAND require difficult process, packaging and qualification work.
What do SK hynix’s customer contracts and shareholder returns indicate?
Long-term agreements with 14 major customers cover more than half of planned 2027–2028 production. That coverage gives SK hynix clearer demand visibility and can reduce exposure to the memory cycle. It may also constrain the company’s ability to capture every temporary price surge in the spot market.
SK hynix plans approximately 100 trillion won of 2026 shareholder returns, including dividends, share repurchases and cancellations tied partly to gains from its Kioxia investment. The figure can support investor confidence and cash distribution, but it does not remove the operating risks attached to memory prices and capital spending.

How should investors read this earnings release?
- Separate operating profit from net income: the “seven-fold” claim is the 632% operating-profit increase.
- Check the product mix, especially HBM4, server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs, rather than treating all memory revenue as identical.
- Compare customer contract coverage with pricing flexibility.
- Track capital expenditure and factory timing because new supply can eventually reverse today’s scarcity.
- Treat the through-2030 shortage forecast and fourth-quarter HBM4 leadership as company expectations, not guarantees.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is HBM4 used for?
HBM4 is high-bandwidth memory designed for close integration with advanced processors, including AI accelerators. Its value comes from moving large volumes of data quickly while occupying less board space than widely separated memory components.
Does a high operating margin mean SK hynix will keep earning 80% margins?
No. The 80% figure is the company’s third-quarter 2026 operating margin. Memory pricing is cyclical, and additional industry capacity or weaker customer spending could reduce margins even if AI demand remains substantial.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are long-term memory contracts good or bad for SK hynix?
They provide more predictable volumes and help justify capacity investment. The trade-off is that contract prices may leave less upside than selling scarce output at rapidly rising spot prices.
What could end the current memory shortage?
Faster factory construction, better manufacturing yields, lower AI-server orders or a pause in hyperscaler capital spending could loosen supply. The timing is uncertain because advanced-memory facilities and customer qualification take years.
