Singapore Safe Deposit Boxes in 2026: Five Providers Matched to Your Needs

There is no single best safe-deposit-box provider in Singapore. The right choice depends on whether you value a bank relationship, staffed branches, 24/7 automated retrieval, precious-metals capacity, a short contract or the lowest total first-year cost. A useful 2026 shortlist is DBS/POSB, Certis, STARVAULT, Safe Secure Storage @SG and BullionStar. Compare the complete bill, access method, box dimensions, eligibility, insurance and exit terms before you sign; published rates and availability can change.

Five providers, five different fits

The table below is a fit-based shortlist rather than an objective ranking. Prices are published figures with different dates, tax treatments and contract terms, so they are not directly interchangeable without recalculating the total cost.

Provider Best fit Published price information Access and eligibility points Important caveat
DBS/POSB Customers who prefer a bank-based service S$190.75–S$501.40 a year across four sizes in a 2026 comparison guide A qualifying DBS/POSB deposit account is reported as required The figures come from a secondary guide, not a current DBS fee schedule; confirm branches, fees and availability
Certis Safe Deposit Box People wanting multiple staffed locations XS–XL GIRO rents of S$159, S$239, S$319, S$499 and S$819; non-GIRO S$259, S$339, S$419, S$599 and S$919 Paya Lebar, Bukit Merah and Jurong East; facilities listed as open 365 days, with staffed hours of Monday–Saturday 10am–8pm and Sunday/public holidays 10am–6pm The fee notice is effective 1 September 2025; check current charges and extra-service fees
STARVAULT Customers who need automated, around-the-clock retrieval Current promotions and full rental charges must be confirmed directly Robotic retrieval, stated 24-hour vault access, one-month contracts; foreigners may rent with a valid passport, working phone number and email address STARVAULT says box contents are not insured by it; arrange separate cover
Safe Secure Storage @SG Users wanting a 24/7 automated box with stated GST-inclusive prices Small S$218/year; large S$327/year, both stated as including GST Tagore Lane location, personal access card and PIN, robotic retrieval, 24/7 access; 27kg maximum per box The same page also shows S$200 and S$300 plus GST in an FAQ, conflicting with the headline prices; resolve the discrepancy before paying
BullionStar Precious-metals owners willing to commit for several years From 1 January 2026, small boxes S$589/S$559/S$488 a year on 2/5/10-year terms; large S$889/S$849/S$788; extra-large S$1,659/S$1,599/S$1,488 Two-, five- and ten-year terms; S$200 key deposit Lower annual figures require longer commitments; confirm GST and all agreement charges

How to compare the real cost

A headline annual rent is only one line of the bill. A dated 2026 market guide published by STARVAULT puts personal safe-deposit-box rentals at roughly S$160–S$1,500 per year across the categories it reviewed, with rates stated as accurate on 14 August 2026. That is a market snapshot, not a regulator-set range or a guarantee for any particular box.

For every quote, calculate two numbers: the amount you must pay on day one and the amount due at renewal. Put each item in writing:

  • Annual rent and whether GST is included.
  • Administration, setup or registration charges.
  • Refundable key, card or security deposit.
  • Lost-key, forced-opening, drilling and replacement-card fees.
  • Payment-method surcharges, including any difference between GIRO and non-GIRO payment.
  • Minimum term, renewal date, early-cancellation rules and refund formula.
  • Internal dimensions, usable height and the maximum permitted weight.
  • Travel time to the branch or vault and the hours during which retrieval actually works.

For a simple first-year calculation, add rent, GST when it is excluded, every non-refundable fee and any required deposit. Show the refundable deposit separately so you do not mistake a temporary cash outlay for a recurring cost. A five-year or ten-year discount should be compared with the total amount committed, not just the annualized figure.

DBS/POSB: a bank-based option

A 2026 Singapore comparison guide lists DBS/POSB annual rentals from S$190.75 to S$501.40 across four box sizes. It also says that a qualifying DBS/POSB deposit account is required. Those details are useful for budgeting, but they are not a current DBS safe-box fee schedule identified in the available material.

Choose this route if keeping the box relationship with your bank is more important than automated access or independent-provider flexibility. Before visiting a branch, ask DBS/POSB to confirm the current size list, annual fee, GST treatment, account eligibility, key deposit, lost-key process, access hours and whether the branch has an empty box. Do not assume that every branch offers boxes or that an account automatically qualifies.

Certis: staffed access at three listed sites

Certis lists safe-deposit-box facilities at Paya Lebar, Bukit Merah and Jurong East. Its service information says the facilities operate 365 days a year. The published operating hours are Monday to Saturday, 10am to 8pm, and Sunday and public holidays, 10am to 6pm. That is broad availability, but it is not the same as unattended 24-hour retrieval: your visit remains bounded by staffed operating hours.

The Certis fee notice effective 1 September 2025 lists the following annual rents:

  • Ideal for Gifting
  • Ideal for a bookworm

Box size GIRO annual rent Non-GIRO annual rent
XS S$159 S$259
S S$239 S$339
M S$319 S$419
L S$499 S$599
XL S$819 S$919

The notice is a provider statement dated 2025, so ask for the current schedule when you apply. Confirm whether the displayed amounts include GST, whether GIRO is available to you, and the charges for replacing keys, drilling a lock, adding an authorized user or ending a rental early. Certis can be a practical fit when you need a choice of locations and prefer a staffed process over robotic retrieval.

STARVAULT: automated retrieval and short commitments

STARVAULT describes automated robotic retrieval and 24-hour vault access. It lists small boxes measuring 83 × 235 × 325 millimetres and medium boxes measuring 152 × 235 × 325 millimetres, with a maximum of 25kg per box. Those dimensions make it important to measure folders, jewellery cases or bullion packaging before selecting a size; external dimensions of your container are not a substitute for usable internal clearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

STARVAULT says foreigners may rent with a valid passport, a working phone number and an email address. It also says one-month contracts are available, which can reduce commitment for someone testing the service or needing temporary storage. Ask whether a one-month term renews automatically, what notice is required to stop it, and whether the short term carries a different deposit or administration charge.

Its displayed promotions are time-sensitive. Request a written quote showing rent, GST, deposits, access credentials, retrieval fees and renewal pricing. STARVAULT explicitly says it does not insure box contents. If you store cash, bullion, jewellery or important originals, arrange separate insurance and check that the policy accepts unattended vault storage.

Safe Secure Storage @SG: 24/7 access with a pricing discrepancy to resolve

Safe Secure Storage @SG lists a small box measuring 37 × 24 × 11.5 centimetres at S$218 per year including GST and a large box measuring 37 × 24 × 18 centimetres at S$327 per year including GST. It states a refundable S$200 deposit, a 27kg maximum weight, a personal access card and PIN, robotic retrieval and 24/7 access. The listed location is Tagore Lane.

The page also shows S$200 and S$300 plus GST in an FAQ. Those figures conflict with the S$218 and S$327 GST-inclusive headline prices. Do not choose a box on the basis of either number until the provider confirms, in writing, which prices apply to your size, contract and payment date. Ask specifically whether the S$200 deposit is refundable at checkout, whether the card or PIN has replacement fees, and whether 24/7 means both building entry and successful robotic retrieval at all times.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The smaller box is substantially shorter than the large one, so compare the height of your storage containers rather than relying on the labels. Also confirm current availability, identity requirements, renewal pricing and the procedure during equipment maintenance or a power interruption.

BullionStar: lower annual rates for longer terms

BullionStar’s agreement effective 1 January 2026 sets out separate small, large and extra-large prices by contract length:

Box size 2-year term (annual rate) 5-year term (annual rate) 10-year term (annual rate)
Small S$589 S$559 S$488
Large S$889 S$849 S$788
Extra-large S$1,659 S$1,599 S$1,488

The agreement lists a S$200 key deposit and a lost-key drilling charge of S$200 or the actual cost, whichever is higher. The discounted annual rate is therefore not a free-standing bargain: a ten-year rental creates a substantially larger commitment and may have stricter transfer or cancellation rules. Before signing, read the full agreement for early termination, renewal, access hours, authorized users, GST and any insurance or handling exclusions.

This profile makes most sense when you need the larger capacities or are comfortable locking in a multiyear storage plan. If your need may end within a year or two, compare the total cash commitment with a shorter contract elsewhere, even if the annualized number looks higher.

Other providers worth investigating, but not yet fully comparable

SGPMX

SGPMX positions its private boxes for precious-metals storage. It lists three sizes with annual fees of US$1,400, US$1,800 and US$2,100, plus an additional 9% GST. It states 24/7/365 controlled access, a refundable US$1,000 key deposit and optional insurance at a stated annual premium rate of 0.15%.

Because the prices are in US dollars and the insurance is optional, calculate the Singapore-dollar cost at your payment date and obtain the insurer’s policy wording. Confirm the exchange-rate method, eligibility, valuation evidence, exclusions and whether the premium covers cash, bullion, jewellery or documents. This is a specialist option rather than an obvious low-cost household-document choice.

UOB and OCBC

UOB’s safe-deposit-box hire terms were last updated 1 February 2018. Its business fee page lists a refundable S$100 key deposit and tells readers to call for rental charges and availability. That is not enough evidence for a current price comparison, but it gives existing customers a bank option to investigate directly.

OCBC materials show ancillary charges and terms, but the available information does not establish current full rental prices or current consumer eligibility. Ask OCBC for the applicable fee guide, box sizes, access conditions and branch availability before treating it as an alternative.

Access: staffed, automated and genuinely available

Access language can hide important differences. Certis publishes staffed hours and three sites. STARVAULT and Safe Secure Storage @SG state 24/7 access. Ask each provider four separate questions:

  2. Can the retrieval system dispense the box at any hour, including weekends and public holidays?
  3. What authentication is required: key, card, PIN, identity document, biometrics or a combination?
  4. What happens during maintenance, network failure, power loss or a security incident?

Also check whether a first visit must be booked, whether an authorized representative can attend without you, and how long retrieval normally takes. A provider’s security-feature list is not independent evidence that it is safer than another provider; compare the actual controls and your ability to use them.

Insurance and the Singapore deposit-insurance distinction

A rented box is physical storage, not a bank deposit. The Singapore Deposit Insurance Corporation says eligible deposits at a scheme-member institution are aggregated and insured up to S$100,000 per depositor per member under the scheme rules. That protection applies to eligible deposits, not cash, jewellery, bullion, documents or other items placed in a safe-deposit box. Investment products and other excluded categories are not converted into insured deposits merely because they are held near a bank.

STARVAULT says it does not insure box contents. SGPMX lists optional insurance and a 0.15% annual premium rate. These provider statements do not answer whether your particular property is covered. Read the policy for:

  • Required appraisals, photographs, purchase records or serial numbers.
  • Valuation rules when prices change.
  • Exclusions for theft, fire, flood, employee dishonesty, terrorism or your own breach of the storage agreement.
  • Whether the insurer pays you directly or requires the provider to cooperate with a claim.

How to verify a provider before paying

The Singapore Police Force publishes a list of licensed Security Service Providers dated 31 March 2026. It says you can enquire through GoBusiness about a specific company’s licence validity using its Unique Entity Number (UEN). Use the legal entity on the quotation or agreement, not only the trading name, and treat a licence check as verification of status rather than an endorsement of a particular box or insurance outcome.

Ask for the current agreement and fee schedule by email. Check that the legal name, address, payment recipient, box number, contract term, deposit refund conditions and contact details match. Visit the site if practical, inspect the entrance and retrieval area, and confirm what identification you must bring. Keep the signed agreement, receipts, inventory and insurance documents outside the box.

A practical rental process

  1. Define the contents. List the documents, valuables or metals you intend to store. Measure the largest container and estimate the total weight, including packaging.
  2. Choose the access model. Select a staffed branch if you want human assistance and multiple listed sites; select an automated service if after-hours retrieval matters and you can manage PINs, cards and contingency procedures.
  3. Shortlist two or three providers. Include at least one option whose location and contract term suit your likely visit frequency.
  4. Request an itemized quote. Have the provider state rent, GST, administration fees, deposit, key or card replacement charges, drilling fees, minimum term and renewal amount.
  5. Confirm eligibility. Ask about bank-account requirements, identity documents, foreign-customer rules, authorized users and age or residency conditions.
  6. Test the economics. Calculate day-one cash, recurring annual cost and the total commitment through the minimum term. Convert US-dollar prices to Singapore dollars where applicable.
  7. Resolve insurance. Obtain policy wording and ensure the limits and evidence requirements match the items on your inventory.
  8. Inspect and sign. Verify the legal entity, address, box dimensions, access hours, emergency procedure and deposit-refund clause before paying.
  9. Store records safely. Keep a dated inventory, photographs and receipts in a separate secure location. Do not place the only copy of your access instructions or insurance policy inside the box.

Common mistakes that make a cheap box expensive

  • Comparing a GST-inclusive quote with a GST-exclusive quote as though they were equal.
  • Ignoring a refundable deposit when budgeting the first payment.
  • Choosing a long term for a discount without checking early-exit rights.
  • Assuming 24/7 access guarantees retrieval during maintenance or a systems outage.
  • Putting heavy bullion or a document binder into a box without checking the weight limit and usable height.
  • Assuming bank deposit insurance covers box contents.
  • Relying on a provider’s promotional price after it has expired.
  • Failing to verify the legal entity and security-service licence status.
  • Keeping the inventory, spare key and insurance evidence inside the same box.

Bottom line: choose by total cost and operating fit

Start with the access pattern and box size you genuinely need, then compare the complete first-year and renewal bills. DBS/POSB suits a qualifying bank customer; Certis suits someone who values staffed access and several locations; STARVAULT suits automated access, foreigners and short commitments; Safe Secure Storage @SG suits 24/7 robotic retrieval if its conflicting prices are clarified; and BullionStar suits precious-metals users prepared for a multiyear term. Confirm every rate, tax, deposit, eligibility rule, insurance arrangement and availability directly before renting.
