Sila Nanotechnologies broke ground on its Moses Lake, Washington, facility on November 29, 2023, with $100 million in cost-shared support from the U.S. Department of Energy. The project has since moved beyond construction: Sila announced that operations began in fall 2025 and said in July 2026 that the plant was ramping production after a further $300 million private-equity investment.

The facility is not a conventional battery-cell factory. It produces Titan Silicon, Sila’s silicon-carbon anode material, which is intended for use by battery-cell and device manufacturers.

What Sila is building in Moses Lake

Sila’s Moses Lake project is an automotive-scale manufacturing facility for Titan Silicon, a silicon-carbon material designed to replace some or all of the graphite traditionally used in lithium-ion battery anodes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The anode is the negative electrode in a lithium-ion battery. Silicon can store substantially more lithium than graphite in theory, making it attractive for applications where manufacturers want greater energy density or improved charging performance. The difficulty is that silicon expands substantially during charging and contracts during discharge. That mechanical stress can damage the electrode structure and reduce battery life.

Sila’s approach uses engineered silicon-carbon structures intended to manage those challenges. The commercial test, however, is not simply whether silicon performs well in laboratory cells. The material must also meet requirements for cycle life, safety, consistency, manufacturing yield, cost and customer qualification.

That distinction matters for understanding the Moses Lake plant. Sila is producing a critical battery material, not finished electric-vehicle battery cells. The company supplies material to cell manufacturers and other technology companies that incorporate it into their own products.

Sila identifies electric vehicles, consumer electronics, drones, robotics, augmented- and virtual-reality devices, satellites and other specialty applications as potential markets. Company claims about range, charging speed or cost should be treated as attributed performance claims unless independently verified by customer testing.

Sila’s manufacturing overview provides the company’s description of Titan Silicon and its intended applications.

What the $100 million DOE support covered

The federal support was a $100 million DOE grant and project cost share, not venture capital, a loan, or financing for the entire factory. The award was administered through the DOE Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains and funded under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

A DOE environmental assessment put the project’s approximate total cost at $617 million. Of that amount, about $100 million was identified as the DOE contribution and approximately $517 million as private cost share. In other words, the federal award represented roughly one-sixth of the estimated project cost.

The funding was intended to help establish domestic production of silicon-anode material and included workforce-development support involving Big Bend Community College and the Columbia Basin Technical Skills Center.

The project’s grant selection dates back to 2022, while contract execution and the November 2023 groundbreaking followed later. The DOE environmental review was a separate federal process examining the project’s environmental, cultural and social effects. The final assessment issued a Finding of No Significant Impact for the analyzed federal action.

That finding does not mean the facility has no environmental footprint. It means DOE determined that the federal action covered by the assessment would not significantly affect the human environment under the applicable review.

Readers should also avoid assuming that the entire $100 million was disbursed at the time of the award announcement. Cost-shared grants generally involve eligible expenses, milestones, reporting and other project requirements. The public announcements cited here do not establish the project’s final federal disbursement or accounting.

Sila’s grant announcement and the DOE environmental assessment provide the underlying funding and project-cost details.

Why Moses Lake matters to the battery supply chain

Moses Lake is in Grant County in Eastern Washington, less than three hours by road from Seattle. Sila acquired an existing industrial building rather than constructing an entirely new greenfield facility. The project involved extensive building modifications, equipment installation, storage vessels, infrastructure upgrades and site work.

Sila describes the site as more than 600,000 square feet on approximately 160 to 162 acres. The location offers access to an established industrial base and comparatively low-cost electricity. Nearby REC Silicon is a domestic source of silane, a chemical feedstock relevant to silicon-material production.

The project is also part of an emerging battery-materials cluster in and around Moses Lake. Group14 Technologies has developed silicon-material operations in the region, while OneD Battery Sciences was previously associated with a local project. Those projects should not automatically be treated as operating at full scale or as still active without separate confirmation.

  • FAMILY-SAFE PACKAGING: Duracell CR2032 batteries are sold in child-safe packaging—an additional layer of safety for households with young children.

The broader strategic rationale is to build more of the battery supply chain in the United States. Domestic anode production could reduce dependence on overseas sources of battery materials, but a local factory does not by itself eliminate the need for qualified customers, reliable suppliers, competitive costs and sustained production quality.

From groundbreaking to operations

Date Milestone
2022 DOE selected Sila for a $100 million grant. Sila acquired the Moses Lake site and building.
November 29, 2023 Sila held the groundbreaking for the build-out of its first automotive-scale manufacturing facility.
April 2024 Sila said construction remained on track for completion in the first quarter of 2025 and discussed customer activity involving Mercedes-Benz and Panasonic Energy.
April 15, 2025 Sila announced commissioning of the plant’s first processing unit. Production remained targeted for the second half of 2025.
September 23, 2025 Sila announced that operations had begun and said initial Titan Silicon batches would follow testing and process refinement.
July 21, 2026 Sila announced a $300 million private-equity round, said construction was complete and described the plant as ramping production.

The timeline shows why the original groundbreaking story needs an update. The ceremony marked the beginning of the project, not the completion of commercial production. By 2026, the facility had progressed through construction and commissioning into operations and production ramping.

At the same time, “began operations” is not the same as full-rate production, validated automotive-volume shipments or proven commercial success. The public announcements cited here do not provide a current production rate, shipment volume or complete customer-qualification record.

Capacity figures are not directly interchangeable

Sila and DOE have described the project using several different capacity measures. They appear to refer to different phases, configurations or expansion scenarios, so they should not be collapsed into one definitive number.

Source or phase Reported figure How to interpret it
DOE environmental assessment Up to 2,300 tons per year Proposed silicon-anode material output for the project analyzed by DOE.
Sila’s September 2025 plant-opening announcement Approximately 2–5 GWh Battery-capacity equivalent that the initial operation could support, according to Sila.
Sila’s July 2026 financing announcement Up to 250 GWh over five years A planned expansion scenario tied to the new private funding.
Sila manufacturing page Up to 150 GWh A separate full-site or capacity description published by Sila.

GWh is generally a cell-capacity equivalent, not the electrical output of a Sila-built battery-cell factory. It describes the battery capacity that the company’s anode material could support under the relevant assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 150-GWh and 250-GWh figures are therefore best presented as separate company claims rather than as a settled final capacity. The ultimate configuration will depend on expansion decisions, equipment, customer demand and successful qualification.

Customers and the path to commercialization

Mercedes-Benz was identified as an intended automotive customer when the project was announced. Sila later referenced supply relationships involving Mercedes-Benz and Panasonic Energy.

Those announcements are important because they indicate a path into established battery and automotive supply chains. They do not necessarily mean that large-volume commercial deliveries were taking place at the 2023 groundbreaking, nor do they establish that every announced relationship had reached mass production by August 2026.

The commercial sequence for a new anode material typically includes material production, cell integration, testing, qualification, manufacturing validation, customer approval and then volume ramping. Each stage can expose problems involving cycle life, swelling, safety, consistency, yield or cost.

Sila’s ability to scale will therefore depend not only on completing the Moses Lake plant, but also on producing consistent material economically and securing repeat demand from cell manufacturers and original-equipment manufacturers.

Jobs and local economic impact

The project’s employment figures are projections, not verified current hiring totals. Original 2023 coverage cited an expectation of approximately 100 to 500 full-time jobs over five years. The DOE environmental assessment projected approximately 150 to 300 full-time-equivalent jobs.

Those estimates are not interchangeable. They may reflect different assumptions, definitions or stages of the project. Neither should be presented as the number of people currently employed at the facility.

The workforce component is more concrete than a generic jobs promise. Sila committed part of its federal support to workforce development with Big Bend Community College and the Columbia Basin Technical Skills Center. Sila has also described local STEM programs, community engagement and training initiatives.

Washington facility records list permits for the site, but a permit listing alone does not prove production volume, regulatory compliance or operational performance. Current permit information is available through the Washington Department of Ecology facility record.

What remains uncertain

  • Current output: Sila has said the plant is ramping production, but the cited announcements do not disclose a current annualized production rate.
  • Shipments: Public statements do not establish the volume of commercial material delivered to each customer.
  • Qualification: Announced customer relationships should not be treated as proof that all automotive applications have completed qualification.
  • Expansion: The 250-GWh five-year figure is a planned expansion scenario, not demonstrated operating capacity.
  • Final configuration: Sila’s 150-GWh manufacturing-page figure differs from the later 250-GWh expansion claim.
  • Federal accounting: The public award announcement does not establish the final amount disbursed or the project’s complete cost-share accounting.
  • Employment: Announced job projections are not the same as actual local hiring.

Why the project matters

Sila’s Moses Lake plant represents a bet on a specific point in the battery supply chain: advanced anode materials may become as strategically important as cell factories themselves. Graphite remains widely used, while silicon offers a potentially higher-capacity alternative but brings difficult durability and manufacturing problems.

The project also illustrates the role of federal industrial policy. The DOE contribution did not finance the entire facility; it helped reduce the private capital required for a strategically important domestic manufacturing project. Sila still had to provide substantial private cost share, build and commission the plant, qualify its material and attract customers.

As of August 18, 2026, the most accurate description is that Sila has moved beyond a proposed factory and into operating production at Moses Lake. The next test is whether the company can ramp consistently and economically while meeting the demanding requirements of automotive and other high-volume customers.
