Short answer: A Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) is a mutual-fund-based vehicle with a higher entry requirement and more flexible strategy rules than ordinary mutual funds. Portfolio Management Services (PMS) manages an individual client portfolio under a mandate. An Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) is a separate SEBI-regulated pooled-fund structure, usually with the greatest commitment, valuation and exit restrictions. None is automatically safer or more profitable. The right choice depends on the strategy you want, how much control and liquidity you need, the fees you can accept, and whether you can live with the product’s specific risks and disclosures.
Use the regulatory thresholds as an eligibility screen, not as a recommendation. Before investing, read the current SIF information document, PMS disclosure document and agreement, or AIF private placement memorandum, and obtain personalized advice from a SEBI-registered investment adviser if you need a suitability assessment.

What SIF, PMS and AIF actually are
Specialized Investment Fund (SIF)
An SIF is an investment strategy offered within the mutual fund framework. SEBI introduced the framework on February 27, 2025, describing it as a way to bridge a gap between conventional mutual funds and PMS. The regulator’s wording is about product design and flexibility; it is not a ranking of returns, safety or manager quality.
Because an SIF remains within the mutual-fund framework, investors should start with the scheme’s information document and the asset-management company’s operating disclosures. The practical details that matter most—permitted assets, concentration, use of short positions or other flexible techniques, dealing frequency, valuation, fees, redemption rules and risk controls—can differ by strategy. Do not infer them from the SIF label alone.

Portfolio Management Services (PMS)
PMS is a portfolio-management service for an individual client. Your assets are managed under a client-level agreement and mandate rather than pooled into one mutual-fund scheme. A provider may offer discretionary management, where the manager makes investment decisions within the mandate; non-discretionary management, where the client retains approval over transactions; or advisory service, where the provider gives advice but the client executes or authorizes decisions.
The agreement and disclosure document should establish the investment approach, permitted instruments, concentration limits, reporting, custody arrangements, fees, expenses, valuation conventions and the circumstances in which the mandate can be changed or terminated. A PMS portfolio can therefore look very different from another PMS portfolio, even when both use the same broad label.
Alternative Investment Fund (AIF)
An AIF is governed by a separate SEBI regulatory framework. Investors subscribe to a specific fund and strategy under a private placement memorandum. The document normally becomes the source of truth for commitments and drawdowns, the fund’s intended life, extensions, valuation, fees and carried interest, transfer rules, distributions and exit restrictions.

A strategy may require capital to remain invested for a defined period, value holdings periodically rather than continuously, and limit transfers or redemptions. Those terms are fund-specific and should be understood before committing capital.

| Option | General threshold in the cited material | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SIF | ₹10 lakh across all investment strategies of an SIF, aggregated at the investor’s PAN level | Accredited investors are exempt from this minimum. SEBI issued threshold-monitoring guidance in July 2025; verify the current scheme process. |
| PMS | ₹50 lakh in funds or securities from the client | This figure comes from SEBI’s investor FAQ. Confirm the provider’s current documents and applicable regulations before relying on an older FAQ. |
| AIF | ₹1 crore generally | Exceptions apply to specified employees or directors, accredited investors and certain social-impact-fund investors. The private placement memorandum controls the fund’s exact terms. |
For an SIF, the ₹10 lakh test is aggregated at PAN level across the strategies offered by that SIF, rather than calculated separately for each strategy. Accredited-investor treatment can change the result, so the AMC’s onboarding and monitoring process matters. For PMS, the threshold is described as funds or securities accepted from the client. For an AIF, the general minimum is subject to the exceptions in the applicable regulations. In every case, ask the provider to confirm how subscriptions, additional purchases, transfers and withdrawals are counted.
How the three options differ in practice
| Decision dimension | SIF | PMS | AIF |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regulatory form | Investment strategies within the mutual-fund framework, with SIF-specific rules | Client-level portfolio-management service | Separate alternative-investment-fund framework |
| Ownership and pooling | You hold units in the scheme; portfolio assets are pooled | Your portfolio is managed under your individual mandate | You hold an interest in a specific pooled fund governed by its private placement memorandum |
| Control | You choose the strategy and transact under the scheme’s dealing rules | Control depends on whether the mandate is discretionary, non-discretionary or advisory | Day-to-day decisions are made by the fund manager within the fund documents |
| What to examine first | Strategy mandate, exposure limits, shorting or other flexibility, dealing frequency, threshold monitoring and fees | Mandate, concentration, fee model, reporting, custody and termination provisions | Category and strategy, commitments and drawdowns, fund life, fees and carry, valuation, transfers and exits |
| Liquidity questions | How often can you deal, and what redemption terms and gates apply? | How quickly can positions be sold, and how are withdrawals handled? | Are there lock-ins, limited redemption windows, transfer restrictions or a fixed fund life? |
| Reporting | Scheme-level NAV and statements under the fund’s disclosures | Client-level portfolio and transaction reporting | Fund-level reports, valuation statements and capital-account information under the memorandum |
The table shows structural differences, not a performance league table. Asset exposure, concentration, leverage, valuation frequency and manager skill can make two products in the same category behave very differently.
When an SIF may fit
You want a pooled vehicle with a more flexible mandate
An SIF may be worth investigating if a conventional mutual-fund mandate does not provide the strategy flexibility you seek, but you still prefer a pooled scheme rather than an individually managed account. Read exactly what “flexibility” means in the proposed strategy. It could relate to eligible securities, concentration, hedging, short positions or other permitted techniques; the label does not tell you which of these are actually used.
You can meet the threshold and tolerate scheme-level dealing terms
The entry screen is the amount shown in the threshold table, unless the accredited-investor exception applies. That screen says nothing about the minimum additional purchase, exit load, redemption frequency, settlement timing, suspension powers or the possibility of delayed dealing. Those terms belong in the SIF information document and related scheme disclosures.
You want standardized fund documentation rather than a bespoke mandate
A scheme gives all investors in that strategy the same stated mandate and valuation methodology. That can simplify comparison across schemes, but it also means you cannot negotiate an individual asset list or concentration limit in the way a PMS client sometimes can. Decide whether the strategy’s standard rules are acceptable before focusing on the manager’s past record.

When PMS may fit
You need an individual portfolio and a defined mandate
PMS is designed around your account and an agreement with the portfolio manager. This can be useful when your objectives, tax lots, existing holdings or concentration preferences require treatment that a pooled scheme cannot provide. It also means you must understand the mandate’s authority: discretionary management gives the manager operating room, while non-discretionary and advisory arrangements require more client involvement.
Recommended Free Tools
You are comfortable with concentration and direct portfolio variability
A PMS portfolio can hold a smaller number of positions or follow a more customized allocation than a pooled scheme. That can make the outcome more sensitive to individual securities, trading decisions and the timing of cash flows. Ask how concentration limits are set, how exceptions are approved, how illiquid holdings are valued and what happens if you request a withdrawal during a stressed market.
You will review the fee model, not just the headline percentage
Request a complete schedule covering management fees, performance-linked fees if any, brokerage and transaction costs, custody, taxes, administration and other pass-through expenses. Ask how a performance fee is calculated, whether a high-water mark or hurdle applies, how losses are treated and when the fee is crystallized. These provisions can materially change the result even when two managers report the same gross return.
When an AIF may fit
You can commit capital for the fund’s intended life
An AIF’s memorandum may specify a commitment amount, drawdown notices, an investment period, a fund life and extension rights. Your cash-flow planning must cover both the initial subscription and later drawdowns. Do not treat an undrawn commitment as money that can be spent elsewhere without checking the notice period and consequences of failing to fund it.
You understand valuation and exit constraints
Unlike a daily-dealing product, an AIF may value investments periodically and restrict transfers or redemptions. Read the valuation policy, independent valuation arrangements, suspension provisions, distribution waterfall and exit language. Ask what you can do if you need cash before the fund reaches its planned exit, and whether a secondary transfer is permitted or requires manager consent.

You can analyse fees, carry and conflicts
Read the full fee and expense section, including management fees, fund expenses, transaction costs, monitoring fees, performance allocation or carried interest, and any offset or rebate provisions. Review conflicts involving related parties, allocation of opportunities, co-investments, service providers and transactions between affiliated vehicles. The AIF structure can be appropriate only if you can accept these economics and governance arrangements.
A decision framework you can use
- Define the job the money must do. Separate emergency reserves, near-term spending and long-term capital. A product with restricted exits should not be chosen for money you may need soon.
- Choose the control model. If you want a scheme with standardized rules, investigate an SIF. If you want a manager to operate an account under your mandate, investigate PMS. If you accept pooled capital, commitments and fund-level decisions, investigate an AIF.
- Set a liquidity limit before reading returns. Write down the maximum period you could tolerate without access to the money. Compare that limit with dealing frequency, notice periods, lock-ins, gates, transfer restrictions and the fund’s stated life.
- Map the risk drivers. Identify equity, credit, interest-rate, currency, leverage, short-selling, liquidity and concentration exposures. Ask which risks are permitted, which are actually used, and how they are monitored.
- Compare total costs on the same basis. Distinguish management fees from performance fees or carry, and include custody, brokerage, administration, taxes and other expenses. A low headline fee is not necessarily a low total cost.
- Check reporting and independent oversight. Confirm the frequency and content of statements, NAV or valuation reports, audited financial statements, custody arrangements, grievance channels and the identity of the responsible regulated entities.
- Read the exit mechanics. Find the exact process for redemption, withdrawal, termination, transfer or distribution. Note any manager discretion to suspend dealing, extend a fund, defer valuation or impose conditions.
- Test the decision against a bad-market scenario. Ask how the product behaved or is designed to behave if markets fall, liquidity disappears, a holding defaults or you need cash unexpectedly. A manager’s answer should match the governing document.
- Obtain suitability advice when the consequences are material. A SEBI-registered investment adviser can assess your circumstances; the regulatory label alone cannot do that.

Regulatory developments to date
| Date | Development | Why it matters to an investor |
|---|---|---|
| February 27, 2025 | SEBI introduced the SIF framework through amendments to the mutual-fund regulations. | This establishes SIF as a mutual-fund-based product intended to bridge a design gap with PMS. |
| April 9, 2025 | SEBI issued a clarification on implementing the SIF framework. | Use the clarification together with the scheme’s current documents when checking how a product operates. |
| July 29, 2025 | SEBI issued a circular on monitoring the SIF minimum threshold. | Investors should understand how the AMC checks the threshold over time, especially across strategies at PAN level. |
| March 20, 2026 | SEBI’s Mutual Funds Master Circular included an SIF chapter and AMC eligibility routes. | AMC launch eligibility is separate from your investor eligibility; do not treat a manager’s qualification as proof that a strategy suits you. |
| July 14, 2026 | SEBI’s AIF regulations listing showed the version last amended on this date. | Use the current regulations and the fund’s memorandum, rather than an older summary, for AIF terms. |
| July 21, 2026 | SEBI issued SIF distribution-certification requirements. | Distribution arrangements and access channels may change; confirm that the distributor and process meet current requirements. |
| April 1, 2027 | Separately listed 2026 PMS regulations are scheduled to take effect. | They are not the operative framework before that date. For decisions made now, check the PMS regulations currently in force and the provider’s documents. |
SEBI described the policy purpose in its February 27, 2025 circular: “To bridge this gap, the SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 1996 have been amended to introduce the broad regulatory framework for the new investment product – Specialized Investment Fund”. That statement explains the regulatory intent; it does not promise a particular return or risk level.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating the entry amount as a quality signal
A higher minimum does not prove that a strategy is better, safer or more exclusive in a useful sense. Thresholds determine eligibility. Judge the actual portfolio, terms, governance and costs.
Assuming all products in one wrapper behave alike
Two SIF strategies can have different exposures and dealing rules. Two PMS providers can use different mandates and fee models. Two AIFs can have different commitments, holding periods and valuation practices. Compare documents, not labels.
Confusing AMC or manager eligibility with investor suitability
The Master Circular’s routes for an AMC to launch an SIF address the manager’s eligibility. They do not determine whether you should invest. Your liquidity needs, risk capacity and objectives remain separate questions.

Ignoring the difference between current and future rules
The PMS regulations scheduled for April 1, 2027 should not be described as already effective. Confirm the rules in force on the date you invest, and revisit the position after the effective date.
Using an old FAQ without checking current documents
The PMS threshold cited above comes from SEBI’s investor FAQ. Because that FAQ was published in 2020, ask the provider and consult current regulations and agreements before committing money.
Looking only at gross performance
Gross returns do not show the effect of management fees, performance fees, carry, brokerage, taxes, valuation timing, cash drag or withdrawal restrictions. Compare the complete cost and liquidity profile.

Failing to plan for an emergency withdrawal
If you may need the money on short notice, verify the actual redemption or withdrawal mechanics first. A product can be unsuitable for an emergency reserve even when its long-term strategy is attractive.
Which option fits which investor profile?
| If your priority is… | Start by examining… | Questions that decide the fit |
|---|---|---|
| A pooled strategy with more flexibility than a conventional mutual fund | SIF | What flexibility is actually used, what are the dealing terms, and do the costs justify them? |
| An individually managed account tailored to your mandate | PMS | Which service type applies, how concentrated may the portfolio become, and how are fees and withdrawals handled? |
| Exposure to a fund with commitments, a defined life or less frequent liquidity | AIF | Can you fund drawdowns, accept valuation and transfer limits, and wait for the stated exit? |
| Immediate access to money or a simple, standardized savings vehicle | None of these should be assumed suitable without checking terms | Do the product’s liquidity, risk and complexity match the purpose of the money? |
This profile table is a starting point for document review, not a personalized recommendation. The same investor may reasonably use different structures for different goals, provided each allocation matches its own time horizon and risk capacity.
Bottom line
SIF, PMS and AIF are different regulatory wrappers, not three steps on a ladder of better investments. SIF offers a mutual-fund framework with specialized strategy flexibility; PMS offers an individual mandate; AIF offers a separate pooled-fund structure with commitment and exit terms set by its memorandum. Compare the real strategy, total cost, control, liquidity, valuation and disclosures, then decide whether the product fits the job your money must perform.
