Use Capital One’s Purchase Eraser when you want a guaranteed 1 cent per mile and the freedom to book with your preferred travel seller. Transfer miles only after you have found a specific airline or hotel award whose realistic value, after taxes and fees, exceeds that baseline or gives you access that cash cannot. Transfers are generally irreversible, so verify award space, passenger eligibility and the program’s cancellation rules before moving any miles.
The short answer: choose certainty or potential upside
Capital One gives you two fundamentally different ways to use miles. Purchase Eraser turns an eligible travel charge into an account credit at a fixed rate of 100 miles per dollar, or 1 cent per mile. A transfer moves miles into an airline or hotel loyalty account, where the redemption value depends on award pricing, availability, taxes, fees and the program’s rules.

There is no universal “best” transfer partner or fixed cents-per-mile figure. The right answer depends on the actual itinerary you can book, not on a partner’s reputation or a theoretical maximum.

Book qualifying travel first
Capital One’s account terms allow you to book through a preferred travel website, travel agent or another travel resource, then redeem miles for a statement credit against the travel purchase. You do not have to use a particular airline, hotel chain or booking portal. The merchant must code as an eligible travel category.

Redeem within the 90-day window
The redemption must be requested within 90 days after the travel purchase posts to your account. After you submit the request, Capital One says the credit is usually applied within two to three business days. You can redeem for the entire charge or make a partial redemption.
- Make and pay for the eligible travel purchase with your Capital One account.
- Wait for the transaction to post, then open the rewards redemption area for that account.
- Select the travel purchase and choose the number of miles to apply. The account terms use a rate of 100 miles per dollar.
- Submit the redemption before 90 days have elapsed since posting, and confirm that the resulting credit appears on your account.
Example: a $200 travel charge
At 100 miles per dollar, a $200 eligible purchase requires 20,000 miles. The calculation is fixed: $200 × 100 = 20,000 miles. Redeeming fewer miles applies a proportionally smaller credit.
What generally qualifies
Capital One’s 2025 account terms list categories that generally include airlines, hotels, rail lines, car-rental agencies, limousine services, buses, cruises, taxis, travel agents and timeshares. Eligibility is determined by the merchant category code, so a purchase that looks like travel to you may not qualify if the merchant is coded differently. Review the transaction in your account rather than assuming a category will be accepted.

How Capital One miles transfers work
Requirements before you transfer
Capital One says transfers start at 1,000 miles. The name on your Capital One account must match the name on the receiving airline or hotel loyalty account. Confirm the loyalty account number, spelling and date of birth details before submitting the request; a mismatch can prevent the transfer or send it to the wrong account.
Airline partners and published ratios
The partner list below is from Capital One’s January 29, 2026 transfer-partner guide. Ratios are expressed as Capital One miles to partner points or miles. Most listed airline programs use 1:1, but the exceptions materially change how many partner miles you receive.

Capital One’s warning is explicit: “Once you have transferred Capital One miles, they become subject to the receiving loyalty program and cannot be transferred back to your Capital One rewards account.” After the transfer, the partner’s expiration policy, award chart or dynamic pricing, change and cancellation fees, and account rules control what you can do.

How to compare the two options mathematically
Start with the fixed Purchase Eraser baseline
Purchase Eraser gives every redeemed mile a known value of $0.01. For any number of miles, multiply the miles by $0.01 to find the guaranteed travel credit. For example, 40,000 miles produce $400 of credit, provided you have an eligible purchase and redeem within the required window.
Calculate a transfer’s realistic net value
For a potential award, use this calculation:
(Cash price of the same itinerary − taxes and fees you would still pay) ÷ Capital One miles required = value per mile.
Use the cash price for a genuinely comparable itinerary: same dates or a reasonable alternative, cabin, airports, baggage and cancellation conditions. If a program requires a non-1:1 ratio, calculate the number of Capital One miles needed after applying that ratio. A transfer beats Purchase Eraser only when the resulting value is comfortably above 1 cent per mile and the restrictions are acceptable.

Do not count an inflated cash comparison
An award is not automatically valuable because the airline’s fully flexible or last-seat cash fare is expensive. Compare against the fare you would actually buy. Subtract mandatory taxes and carrier-imposed fees from the value, and account for any change or cancellation cost. A nominally high cents-per-mile result may be worse than a simple credit if the award has poor dates, inconvenient routing or no useful refund rights.

When transferring is most likely to win
- You found confirmed award space. Search the partner program first and verify that the exact seats or room are bookable for the travelers and dates you need.
- The net value exceeds 1 cent per mile. Premium-cabin flights and otherwise expensive itineraries can create more upside than ordinary economy fares, but only after taxes and fees are deducted.
- Cash cannot provide the same access. A scarce award seat, a route with limited cash inventory or a hotel night unavailable for sale can justify a transfer even when the arithmetic is close.
- You accept the program’s rules. Check cancellation, redeposit, expiration and booking-name requirements before moving miles.
These are decision heuristics, not guaranteed valuations. Award prices and inventory vary by date and program.

- Your trip is inexpensive. If the cash fare or hotel rate is low, a complex award search may not produce enough additional value to justify the effort.
- You need flexibility across sellers. Purchase Eraser can work with qualifying purchases made through different travel sellers, rather than only one partner’s inventory.
- You are unsure about dates. A statement credit does not lock miles into one program while you wait for award availability.
- You cannot verify an award. Do not transfer speculatively. Miles stranded in a partner account may be difficult or impossible to use for your intended trip.
- You value predictable budgeting. The 1-cent rate makes the credit easy to calculate and removes the need to estimate a fluctuating award value.
A safe decision process before moving any miles
- Price the cash option. Record the fare or room rate you would actually purchase, including relevant baggage, resort or booking fees.
- Search the partner program. Confirm award inventory for the exact travelers, dates, cabin or room type and airports.
- Read the rules on that award. Note taxes, fees, cancellation and change conditions, expiration policies and whether the booking can be refunded to the loyalty account.
- Apply the ratio. Convert the partner’s required points or miles into the number of Capital One miles needed.
- Compute net value. Subtract unavoidable taxes and fees from the comparable cash price, then divide by Capital One miles required.
- Check the account names. Ensure the Capital One account name and receiving loyalty account name match, and verify the loyalty number.
- Transfer only the amount you can book. Keep a buffer for taxes or a second booking rather than moving a speculative balance.
- Book promptly after the transfer. Award inventory can disappear while miles are in transit or before you complete the reservation.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
Transferring before finding seats or rooms
Inventory is not guaranteed merely because a route or hotel appears in a partner’s search results. A transfer made without confirmed space can leave “orphaned” miles in the partner program. Search first, select the exact award and proceed only when you are ready to book.
Assuming every ratio is 1:1
Emirates Skywards, EVA Air and Japan Airlines Mileage Bank are listed at 2:1.5; JetBlue is 5:3; I Prefer is 1:2; and Accor is 2:1. A 50,000-mile award in a 2:1.5 program requires more Capital One miles than a 1:1 transfer. Recheck the live ratio before confirming.
Missing the Purchase Eraser deadline
The 90-day period starts after the travel transaction posts, not when you made the reservation. Set a reminder and redeem promptly if you intend to erase the charge. A partial redemption is available, so you do not need the full balance to cover the purchase.

Ignoring merchant coding
Eligibility depends on the merchant category code. A travel-related charge from an intermediary or bundled seller may code outside the categories listed in the account terms. Check the posted transaction and contact Capital One if the coding appears inconsistent with the purchase.
Comparing unlike itineraries
Do not compare a restrictive award ticket with a fully refundable cash fare, or a central airport with a distant one, without valuing those differences. Include the practical cost of the itinerary you would actually accept.
Where to verify current information
Use Capital One Travel to review travel-booking options, but Purchase Eraser is not limited to that site when the charge is otherwise eligible. Purchase Eraser is the default for a guaranteed 1 cent per mile, broad booking freedom and low complexity. A transfer is worthwhile only when a specific, bookable award produces a higher net value or access you cannot reasonably buy with cash. Search first, calculate after taxes and fees, verify the ratio and account names, and remember that a completed transfer cannot be undone.
