There is no universal winner. For U.S. Membership Rewards accounts, using points at Amazon is the simpler, immediate option when the checkout offer meets your needs. Transferring points can unlock an airline or hotel award that is worth more to you, but only after you find a specific reservation you can book and confirm its terms. American Express says completed transfers cannot be reversed.
Compare the exact points and dollars shown for your Amazon purchase with the points, taxes, fees, availability and restrictions for a confirmed travel award. Do not transfer speculatively, and do not assume a ratio or value from another country’s Membership Rewards program applies in the United States.

- Amazon Shop With Points: apply Membership Rewards points to an eligible Amazon purchase after linking your qualifying U.S. Card account and Amazon account.
- Transfer to a travel partner: move points to a participating airline or hotel loyalty account, then book an award through that program.
The first route is tied to a purchase you are already making. The second requires a separate loyalty account, award inventory and acceptance of the partner’s rules. Because the sources do not establish a fixed U.S. Amazon redemption rate or a universal travel value, a generic “points are worth X cents” answer would be misleading.

This comparison applies to the U.S. American Express Membership Rewards program. Canadian, U.K. and other country programs can have different partners, ratios, fees and redemption rules.
Using Membership Rewards points at Amazon
Eligibility and setup
American Express terms say Amazon Shop With Points requires an eligible, enrolled Card account that is not past due or cancelled. You must link your Membership Rewards account to Amazon and follow Amazon’s own terms. Eligibility can depend on the specific account and transaction, so the checkout screen is the authoritative place to see whether a purchase qualifies.
- Sign in to the Amazon account you intend to use.
- Link the eligible U.S. Card account and Membership Rewards account through Amazon’s Shop With Points setup.
- Add an eligible item to your cart and proceed to checkout.
- Choose the linked Membership Rewards account as the payment method, if offered.
- Record the exact number of points and any dollars Amazon requests before placing the order.
Amex notes that your Membership Rewards balance may not show a pending purchase redemption until the order ships. That timing difference is normal; it does not mean you should place a second redemption while waiting for the first to appear.

- Immediate use: you redeem against a real purchase instead of waiting for award space.
- Low complexity: there is no airline or hotel account to manage and no separate award-booking process.
- Predictable checkout: the points and dollars displayed for your account are known before you submit the order.
The trade-off is that the account-specific Amazon offer may not be the best use of your points compared with a particular travel redemption. The official terms reviewed do not establish one fixed U.S. rate that applies to every account or purchase, so use the checkout figure rather than a value quoted in a general points guide.

Requirements before you transfer
American Express requires you to link a participating partner loyalty account. The destination account must belong to you or to an eligible Additional Card Member. Partner terms, award prices and availability apply after the transfer.

Find the bookable flight or hotel first. Write down the award price, taxes, fees, dates, cancellation rules and any restrictions. Only then open the Membership Rewards transfer tool and check the live ratio, minimum and processing details for that partner.
The transfer sequence
- Search the partner program: locate the exact itinerary or hotel award you can book, not merely a theoretical route.
- Confirm the account: make sure the loyalty account is linked and the name satisfies the partner’s eligibility rules.
- Check the live transfer terms: verify the ratio, minimum, increments, expected processing time and any fee.
- Calculate the complete cost: include the points required, taxes, carrier surcharges, hotel charges and any cash payment.
- Transfer only the needed amount: leave a margin only when the partner’s rules make it necessary; avoid sending points just to build a speculative balance.
- Book under the partner’s rules: Amex says the transfer is final, so complete the reservation only after the points arrive and the award remains available.
American Express’ Membership Rewards terms state: “Once you transfer points, the transfer cannot be reversed and the partner loyalty program’s terms and conditions apply.” That is the central risk difference from an Amazon checkout redemption.

How to compare the two choices for a real situation
1. Capture the Amazon number
At checkout, note the total points requested, the remaining dollar amount and the item’s return or cancellation terms. Use the figure attached to your account and purchase; do not substitute a rate from a blog, a different Card or another country’s program.
2. Price a confirmed travel award
Search the partner’s own booking system for dates you can use. Record the award points, taxes, fees, surcharges, cancellation conditions and whether seats or rooms are actually available. A theoretical “good deal” has no value if you cannot book it.
3. Compare against the cash alternative
For travel, compare the award’s complete cash charges plus points with the cash price you would genuinely pay for the same itinerary. Include unavoidable positioning flights, resort fees, baggage charges or other costs when they apply. The relevant question is not the partner’s advertised headline price; it is what this trip costs you in points and money.

4. Apply a flexibility premium
Amazon provides a known purchase now. A transfer may require fixed dates, limited inventory or restrictive cancellation rules. If you value flexibility more than a possible travel upside, that certainty can justify using points at checkout even when a theoretical award calculation looks attractive.
5. Transfer only after the math survives the terms
Check the live transfer screen immediately before submitting. Ratios and partner participation can change, and Amex’s terms place the resulting reservation under the partner’s rules. If the award disappears or the price rises after transfer, Amex does not promise to move the points back.
Transfer ratios, minimums, timing and fees
Ratios are partner-specific
There is no single travel-transfer ratio. The indexed American Express transfer portal has displayed examples such as 1,000 Membership Rewards points becoming 800 Asia Miles. Treat any displayed ratio as a live-program detail to verify at the time you transfer, not as a permanent rule.
American Express’ April 2026 program update says the Cathay Pacific ratio changed effective March 1, 2026, from 1 Membership Rewards point to 1 Asia Mile to 5 Membership Rewards points to 4 Asia Miles. The same update says transfers to Etihad Guest ended June 30, 2026. These examples show why an old partner list or saved ratio can produce a wrong calculation.
Minimums and processing
The 2026 Membership Rewards terms say most transfers use a 1,000-point minimum and 1,000-point increments. Processing typically takes 48 hours, but delays can occur with some partners. Do not wait until the last minute for an expiring fare, and do not assume a pending transfer will arrive in time to hold an award.

The U.S. airline transfer fee
For U.S. airline transfers, Amex charges an excise-tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point, with a maximum of $99. For example, 10,000 points would produce a $6 fee under that rate, while 165,000 points reaches the $99 cap. Confirm the amount shown for your transfer because the fee applies to airline transfers, not automatically to every hotel or other partner.

- You have an eligible purchase and want the points to reduce its cost immediately.
- You cannot find award space for dates that work.
- The travel option requires more cash, fees or restrictive conditions than you accept.
- You are unwilling to risk a nonreversible transfer.
- The Amazon checkout amount is clear and fits your budget, while the travel comparison is still hypothetical.
Using points at Amazon is not automatically a mistake. It can be a rational convenience redemption when certainty and simplicity matter more than pursuing an uncertain travel award.
When a transfer can make sense
- You have located a specific, bookable flight or hotel award.
- The partner’s ratio and required points are confirmed in the live transfer tool.
- The award’s taxes, fees and restrictions are acceptable.
- The itinerary would otherwise cost enough in cash that the points meaningfully reduce your out-of-pocket expense.
- You can tolerate the transfer’s processing time and cannot use the points more effectively for a known near-term need.
A transfer is strongest when it solves a real trip at a price and schedule you would choose anyway. Do not create a trip merely to justify moving points.
Other travel redemption: booking through Amex Travel
American Express also lists Amex Travel as a way to use Membership Rewards points for all or part of a trip. Its FAQ notes an Insider Fares exception. This route is separate from transferring to an airline or hotel, so compare the exact Amex Travel booking price and terms with both the Amazon checkout offer and the partner award. Check the booking screen for the current points requirement, cash portion, cancellation rules and any fare-specific conditions.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Transferring before checking inventory
A partner may show an attractive award chart but no seats or rooms for your dates. Search first, then transfer only when the reservation is available.

Assuming every partner uses the same ratio
Ratios vary, and the Cathay change documented in 2026 demonstrates that they can change. Read the live portal instead of relying on a remembered number.
Ignoring cash charges
An award is not free if it carries substantial taxes, surcharges or hotel fees. Put every unavoidable charge beside the points requirement before deciding.
Forgetting the transfer fee
The U.S. airline excise-tax offset can add up to $99. Include it in the travel cost, especially for large transfers.

Because Amex says transfers are final, an unused balance can become stranded if the partner changes its award prices or restrictions. Transfer the amount needed for a confirmed booking.
Expecting the Amazon balance to update instantly
Amex says a pending Amazon redemption may not appear until the order ships. Check the order status before assuming the points were not deducted.
A practical decision checklist
- Confirm that you are using the U.S. Membership Rewards program.
- For Amazon, verify eligibility and write down the checkout points and dollar amount.
- For travel, find a bookable award before transferring anything.
- Verify the current partner ratio, minimum, increment, processing time and fee.
- Compare points plus all cash charges with the cash price you would actually pay.
- Check cancellation, change and expiration rules.
- Transfer only when the award still works after those checks.
- If no specific award survives the comparison, keep the points until you have a confirmed use rather than transferring speculatively.
The right answer is therefore transaction-specific: Amazon wins on immediacy and certainty when its checkout offer is acceptable; a travel transfer wins only when a confirmed partner award delivers the combination of schedule, terms and total cost you actually want.
