Use a raise to shore up the weakest part of your finances. If you have little accessible cash, unstable income, or a likely expense ahead, put some or most of the after-tax increase into emergency savings before making aggressive extra debt payments. If you already have a cash cushion that fits your circumstances, keep paying every minimum and direct additional money to the debt with the highest interest rate when your priority is minimizing interest.
There is no evidence-based percentage that every household should assign to savings or debt. The right choice depends on take-home pay from the raise, essential costs, liquid savings, debt rates and fees, job stability, and unavoidable expenses due soon.

Start with the money that actually reaches your account
A salary increase is quoted as gross pay, but your decision must use the net amount after federal, state and local taxes, payroll deductions, retirement contributions, insurance, and any other withholding. Check a recent pay stub after the raise takes effect, or ask payroll for an estimate of the new take-home amount.

When savings should come first
You have almost no accessible cash
Without savings, a broken water heater, medical bill, or period without income can force you to use a credit card, payday loan, or other high-cost borrowing. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) warns that people without savings may have to borrow at high interest after an emergency. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) describes emergency savings as protection against income reductions and unexpected home or car repairs.
In this situation, route part of the raise to a separate, readily accessible savings account. Continue every required debt minimum so accounts remain current, but do not drain your only cash to make an extra principal payment.
Your income is uncertain
A household with variable hours, contract work, a new employer, or one primary earner has a greater liquidity need than a household with highly predictable pay. Cash can cover a gap while you look for work or wait for a delayed payment. The less certain the next paycheck, the more valuable flexibility is relative to a guaranteed interest saving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA known bill is approaching
If you can identify a necessary expense before your next few paychecks, reserve for it explicitly. Paying a card today and then charging the same bill next month does not reduce debt; it simply changes the date and may add interest.

Automate the first transfer
CFPB consumer guidance suggests automatic deposits from pay. Set a recurring transfer for the day your raise arrives, using a separate savings account if that makes the money harder to spend accidentally. FDIC guidance likewise recommends regular automated deposits and notes that a work bonus or other windfall can help build emergency savings. Confirm that the transfer leaves enough in checking for rent, bills, and minimum payments.
When extra debt repayment should come first
Your cash reserve is already workable
There is no universal emergency-fund dollar target or fixed percentage of a raise supported by the cited guidance. A workable reserve is personal: compare your accessible balance with essential monthly costs, income reliability, health and property risks, and the expenses you have already identified. Once that reserve is adequate for your situation, additional cash can have a clearer job—reducing costly debt.
The debt is charging a high rate now
Interest on revolving credit and other high-rate balances can grow faster than savings interest. If your savings account earns less than the debt costs and you can still handle a surprise bill, an extra principal payment produces a predictable saving equal to the interest you avoid, subject to the account’s terms.

The CFPB’s consumer article “How to reduce your debt” states: The goal is to pay off the highest interest rate debt as quickly as possible, because it’s costing you the most.
Keep making the minimum payment on every other account while directing the extra amount to that priority balance.

Check the fine print before paying ahead
Verify whether a loan has a prepayment penalty, whether an introductory rate is about to expire, and how the servicer applies extra payments. Some lenders let you specify principal-only payments; others may advance the due date instead. Ask for written confirmation if the payment instruction is unclear.
Compare the two priorities
| Question | If savings is the priority | If debt is the priority |
|---|---|---|
| What problem are you solving? | Preventing a new emergency from becoming expensive borrowing. | Reducing interest charges and shortening repayment. |
| What should happen to minimum payments? | Pay every minimum on time while building cash. | Pay every minimum on time, then add surplus to the highest-rate debt. |
| What makes the priority stronger? | Very low cash, unstable income, or a near-term essential bill. | Adequate liquid reserves and debt that is accruing high interest. |
| What could go wrong? | Cash may earn less than the debt’s rate, so interest continues. | An unexpected bill may force you to borrow again if cash is too thin. |
A split can be a rational third option
You do not have to send every dollar to one destination. An automatic split can build or maintain a cash buffer while still reducing an expensive balance. For example, you might schedule one transfer to savings and one additional payment to the priority debt on each payday. The split should follow your actual reserve, expenses, debt terms, and income risk rather than a universal rule.
Review the arrangement after a defined event: reaching a cash level that feels adequate for your circumstances, paying off a promotional balance, changing jobs, or completing a large necessary purchase. When the immediate cash risk falls, you can redirect more of the raise to debt; when risk rises, temporarily favor liquidity.

Highest-interest method (avalanche)
List debts from the highest current interest rate to the lowest. Pay the minimum on all of them and send every extra dollar to the top account. When it is paid, roll that payment into the next account. This method targets the debt that is costing the most, so it generally minimizes total interest when rates and balances are otherwise comparable.

Smallest-balance method (snowball)
List debts from the smallest balance to the largest, keep all minimums current, and attack the smallest first. The CFPB notes that seeing an account disappear can provide motivation, although this approach may cost more over time when the smallest balance does not have the highest rate. Choose it deliberately if visible progress is what will help you remain consistent.
| Feature | Highest-interest first | Smallest balance first |
|---|---|---|
| Order | Highest rate, then next highest. | Smallest balance, then next smallest. |
| Main advantage | Focuses on the costliest interest. | Creates an early paid-off account and psychological momentum. |
| Potential trade-off | A large balance may take time to disappear. | Can cost more interest overall. |
| Required in either method | Minimum payments on every account and an accurate check of rates, fees, and promotional periods. | |
What a raise plan looks like in practice
Example: little savings and a high-rate card
Suppose a raise adds $300 per month after withholding, but you have only $400 in accessible savings and a credit-card balance charging a high rate. Directing all $300 to the card could leave you unable to pay for a $700 repair without borrowing again. A more resilient plan might send a defined portion to savings until the reserve is more suitable for your expenses, while paying the card minimum and a smaller extra amount. The exact split is a household decision, not a recommended percentage.
Example: stable income and an established reserve
Suppose the same $300 arrives, but you have reliable income, no major bill due, and a liquid reserve that can handle the emergencies you reasonably face. Keep the reserve intact, pay all minimums, and send the additional $300 to the highest-rate debt. When that account is cleared, redirect the freed payment to the next priority.
Example: competing near-term obligations
If an annual insurance premium is due in two months, separate that amount before choosing between savings and debt. Money earmarked for a known bill is not surplus, even if it is currently sitting in checking.

Set up the plan so the raise is not absorbed by spending
- Confirm the net increase on your pay stub.
- Write the monthly amount needed for essentials, minimum payments, and any known near-term bills.
- Choose a savings transfer, an extra debt payment, or both, and schedule them for payday.
- Use a separate savings account or labeled account category for emergency cash so the purpose is visible.
- Send extra debt payments to the selected account and verify the servicer applies them as intended.
- Review the plan after one or two pay cycles to catch withholding changes, overdraft risk, or a payment that was not credited to principal.
A free spreadsheet, budget app, or paper planner can record take-home pay, expenses, balances, rates, and transfer dates. The CFPB’s financial education toolkit also provides debt-action planning materials; no special product is required.
Evidence about how people balance cash and debt
A 2021 CFPB online experiment asked 551 participants to make choices in hypothetical scenarios involving a fictional person with $5,000 in credit-card debt and varying savings amounts. In every scenario, more than 90 percent of participants used at least some savings to reduce debt. In nine of ten scenarios, fewer than half put the maximum possible savings toward debt. Participants allocated an average of more than half of their available savings to debt in each scenario.
Those figures describe decisions in a hypothetical, non-nationally-representative experiment; they do not establish the best allocation for your household. They do show why a middle path is common: people value both lowering interest and retaining a cushion.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using gross pay: Base the plan on the deposited amount after withholding, not the headline raise.
- Emptying savings to become debt-free: Keep enough accessible cash for plausible emergencies instead of creating a need to borrow again.
- Ignoring minimums: An extra payment on one account never replaces required payments on others.
- Chasing a teaser rate without checking the end date: Record when a promotional period expires and reassess before the rate changes.
- Counting retirement assets as emergency cash: Withdrawals can be slow, restricted, or costly; evaluate them separately from liquid savings.
- Automating too much: Leave a checking-account margin for variable bills so transfers do not cause overdrafts.
- Picking a method without considering behavior: Use the highest-rate order for cost efficiency, or the smallest-balance order if quick wins are what keep you paying consistently.
When to get outside help
If you cannot make minimum payments, are receiving collection notices, or cannot build a workable budget, contact a nonprofit credit-counseling organization. CFPB guidance says nonprofit counselors can help with budgeting and debt management. Before enrolling, ask what services are offered, what fees apply, and how any proposed debt-management plan changes your payments or accounts. This is general U.S.-oriented consumer guidance, not individualized financial, tax, or investment advice; loan contracts, tax treatment, and account-access rules can change the calculation.
A practical decision checklist
- What is the raise after tax and payroll deductions?
- How many months of essential costs can accessible savings cover, given your income stability?
- Which debts have the highest current rates, fees, or imminent promotional-rate expirations?
- What necessary expenses are due before the next few paychecks?
- Can you make every minimum payment while funding the chosen goal?
- Would a split transfer reduce risk without making either goal too small to matter?
- When will you review the plan, and what event would change the priority?
Answer those questions in writing, automate the chosen transfers, and revisit the plan when your cash reserve, job, debt rates, or obligations change.
