For routine purchases that vendors accept by card, a business credit card is usually the simpler tool. For working-capital needs, supplier payments, payroll gaps or other bills that require cash, a business line of credit is usually more suitable. Neither is automatically cheaper: the right choice depends on the written offer’s rate structure, fees, repayment rules, access method, credit limit, collateral and personal-guarantee requirements.
Compare both products for the same amount borrowed over the same period. A promotional card rate can look attractive next to a line of credit until annual, transaction, draw or maintenance fees and payment timing are included. Conversely, a line’s flexible cash access may justify its costs when card acceptance is the constraint.

Quick comparison
| Decision factor | Business credit card | Business line of credit |
|---|---|---|
| Primary function | Pay business expenses directly with an approved card account. | Draw revolving funds as needed for business liquidity. |
| How funds are accessed | Card purchases; payment features depend on the issuer. | Methods can include direct deposit or a convenience check; the lender controls which methods are available. |
| Best initial fit | Recurring, routine purchases that can be paid by card. | Cash needs, short-term working capital and suppliers or bills that do not accept cards. |
| Costs to examine | Interest or APR presentation, annual fees, transaction fees and promotional terms. | Interest rate, draw fees, maintenance fees, other charges, repayment rules and possible collateral costs. |
| Repayment | Read the agreement for minimum payments, interest accrual and how carried balances are treated. | Confirm how each draw is repaid, when payments begin, whether the facility revolves and whether the lender can reduce or convert it. |
| Underwriting | Issuer standards vary; a card may be considered by some newer businesses, but approval is not assured. | Requirements vary by lender and product. A line can be secured or unsecured and may require financial records, collateral or a guarantee. |
The Federal Reserve describes business cards as similar to consumer cards and used for business expenses, while describing business lines as revolving liquidity. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) notes that lines can distribute funds through methods such as direct deposit or convenience checks. Those descriptions explain the functional difference, not a promise that every card will be accepted or every line will offer every access method.
What a business credit card provides
Purchase capacity at the point of sale
A business card gives you a revolving account for approved business spending. You use the card with a vendor, online checkout or other merchant that accepts that network, then receive a statement and payment due date. This can simplify recurring expenses, employee spending controls and receipt collection because transactions appear in one account.

Acceptance is the practical boundary. A landlord, tax authority, manufacturer or supplier may refuse cards or add a surcharge. A card also does not automatically turn the credit limit into cash on favorable terms. Any cash-advance feature, transfer option or special payment arrangement has to be evaluated under the actual card agreement.
Flexible balances, but not free balances
Cards generally allow you to pay the statement in full or carry a balance subject to the agreement. Check when interest starts, whether different transaction types have different rates, how minimum payments are calculated and whether a promotional rate expires on a specified date. A low minimum payment can extend the repayment period and increase total interest.
When a card is a sensible first option
- Your expenses are mostly ordinary purchases that vendors accept by card.
- You can reliably pay statements on schedule, preferably in full when the economics of carrying a balance are unfavorable.
- You value transaction records, employee cards or spending controls more than direct cash access.
- The written offer’s fees and rate structure remain competitive after any introductory period ends.
What a business line of credit provides
Revolving liquidity rather than merchant acceptance
A line establishes a maximum amount you may draw, repay and potentially draw again under the facility’s terms. The business receives funds rather than presenting a payment card to each supplier. That makes a line useful for a timing mismatch: inventory arrives before customers pay, a seasonal payroll bill comes due, or a contractor requires bank funds instead of a card.
The SBA describes direct deposit and convenience checks as possible disbursement methods. Those are examples, not universal features. Ask exactly how you request a draw, how quickly funds arrive, whether there is a minimum draw and whether unused availability can be suspended.

Repayment is facility-specific
Some lines require periodic payments based on the outstanding balance; others impose a different schedule or a conversion to a term repayment. Confirm whether interest accrues from the date of each draw, whether principal must be reduced periodically, and whether the line truly revolves after repayment. A lender may reserve the right to lower or cancel availability even when you have paid as agreed, so do not treat the limit as a permanent asset.
When a line is a better fit
- You need cash for expenses that cannot be charged to a card.
- Borrowing amounts and dates vary, making a draw-as-needed structure more efficient than taking a lump sum.
- You have financial records and cash-flow visibility sufficient for the lender’s underwriting.
- You understand and accept any collateral, owner guarantee, reporting or covenant requirements.
Compare the real cost, not the headline rate
Interest-rate terminology can differ
The Federal Reserve’s March 12, 2025 Consumer & Community Context explains an important disclosure limitation: small-business credit offers may state an interest rate without providing an annual percentage rate (APR), and the consumer Truth in Lending Act disclosure standards do not apply to small-business credit in the same way. Therefore, a card’s advertised APR and a line’s quoted rate may not be directly comparable.
Ask how the rate is calculated, whether it is fixed or variable, what index or margin applies when relevant, and how often it can change. Request a dollar-cost illustration for the amount and period you actually expect to use.
Include every fee
| Cost item | Questions for a card offer | Questions for a line offer |
|---|---|---|
| Interest | When does interest begin? Are purchases, transfers and cash advances priced differently? | Does interest accrue only on drawn funds? Is the rate variable, and what changes it? |
| Account fees | Is there an annual or employee-card fee? | Is there an annual, maintenance, unused-line or renewal fee? |
| Transaction or access fees | Are there foreign, balance-transfer, late or cash-advance charges? | Is there a draw, wire, check, deposit or early-repayment charge? |
| Penalty costs | What happens after a late payment or returned payment? | What default rate, fee, collateral remedy or acceleration right applies after a breach? |
| Promotional terms | When does an introductory rate or bonus end, and what rate follows? | Are introductory terms, waived fees or renewal conditions temporary? |
Do not compare a one-time promotional allowance with a recurring line fee. Add expected interest and all applicable charges over one common borrowing period, then test a shorter and longer payoff period.

Repayment, guarantees and downside risk
Card repayment questions
Read the agreement for the minimum payment formula, due date, grace-period rules and consequences of missing a payment. Determine whether carrying a balance affects the treatment of new purchases. If an owner personally guarantees the account, a business failure may still expose personal assets or credit, subject to the contract and applicable law.
Line repayment questions
Identify the payment amount for each draw, the date the first payment is due, the maturity or renewal date and any required “clean-up” period during which the balance must fall. Ask whether the lender can demand repayment, refuse a future draw or convert the outstanding balance to a term loan. Security interests, personal guarantees and financial-reporting requirements can materially change the risk even when the interest rate looks low.
Availability is not the same as cash in hand
Both products are subject to account status and lender or issuer discretion. A repaid card balance may be available again under the account terms; a repaid line draw may or may not restore the same limit. Build a cash reserve for a reduction, suspension or delayed draw rather than relying on the maximum advertised amount.

Approval standards are set by the issuer or lender. Expect some combination of owner credit history, business time in operation, revenue, bank statements, tax returns, existing debt and projected cash flow. The SBA’s January 2020 guidance identifies business cards as an option that may suit certain startups or companies with limited track records, but that observation is not an approval guarantee and is dated context rather than a current underwriting rule.

A line may be unsecured, secured by business assets or supported by an owner guarantee. The lender may require accounts-receivable information, inventory details, borrowing-base reports or evidence of a recurring repayment source. Ask what happens if revenue falls or a seasonal draw remains outstanding longer than planned.

- Define the expense. List the purchases, bills and timing. Mark each item as card-accepted, cash-only or uncertain.
- Estimate the borrowing pattern. Record the largest expected draw, average balance, number of draws and expected payoff date. Separate a one-time need from recurring seasonal use.
- Obtain written offers. Request the complete card agreement or line term sheet, not just a marketing rate.
- Normalize the comparison. Calculate the cost of the same borrowed amount over the same period, including interest, annual or maintenance charges, transaction and draw fees, late charges and any required account services.
- Map repayment. Write down the minimum or scheduled payment, first due date, maturity, renewal, clean-up requirement and what happens after a missed payment.
- Check access and controls. Confirm merchant acceptance, cash-delivery method, transfer limits, processing time, employee permissions and accounting exports.
- Assess personal exposure. Identify collateral, liens, owner guarantees, reporting obligations and the lender’s right to reduce availability.
- Stress-test the plan. Recalculate the payment if the rate rises, revenue arrives late or the facility is unavailable for one cycle. Choose the product your business can service under that less favorable case.
Where SBA-backed revolving credit fits
SBA program descriptions include revolving lines under SBA Express and CAPLines. The SBA describes Working CAPLine as intended for cyclical growth and recurring or short-term needs. These are program pathways, not endorsements or assurances that a business qualifies.
For a potential SBA-backed facility, verify the current program, eligible uses, limits, fees, maturity, lender participation and borrower requirements directly with the SBA and the participating lender. The SBA’s 7(a) program is a lender-guarantee program for eligible small-business financing; rates are negotiated with the lender but subject to SBA maximums. Program rules and lender underwriting can change, so an older description should not be treated as a present offer.

- Choosing by rate alone: Add every recurring and one-time fee and compare the same balance and duration.
- Using a card for a cash-only bill: Check whether a cash advance, transfer or third-party payment adds a separate fee and rate.
- Assuming a line is permanent: Read suspension, reduction, renewal and demand-repayment clauses.
- Confusing a limit with affordability: Set an internal ceiling based on cash flow, not the maximum approved amount.
- Ignoring guarantees and collateral: Treat personal liability and pledged assets as part of the price.
- Relying on outdated SBA descriptions: Confirm current eligibility and terms with official SBA and lender materials.
- Comparing unlike time periods: Do not place a short promotional card period beside a line’s long-term annualized cost without modeling the same timeline.
Examples of a practical choice
Routine operating purchases
A firm that buys software subscriptions, office supplies and travel from card-accepting merchants may prefer a card if it can pay on time and the agreement’s fees fit its budget. The accounting trail and employee-card controls can be more valuable than cash access.

Supplier payment that requires bank funds
A manufacturer whose supplier will not accept cards may need a line draw deposited to its bank account. The decision turns on the draw cost, repayment schedule and the reliability of customer receipts, not on a card’s rewards or promotional period.
Seasonal inventory
A retailer with predictable pre-season purchases and post-season collections should model the exact draw and repayment cycle. A revolving line may match that pattern, provided the lender permits repeated draws and the business can meet any clean-up requirement.
Mixed needs
Some businesses use a card for controlled, card-accepted spending and a separate line for cash-flow gaps. Keep limits conservative, track each balance independently and avoid using one product to conceal an inability to repay the other. Separate facilities create separate fees, statements and possible guarantees.

- What fees recur annually or monthly, and which are charged per draw, transfer, check or payment?

- Does repayment restore availability automatically, and can you reduce, suspend or cancel the limit?
- What collateral, lien, owner guarantee and financial reporting are required?

Bottom line
Choose a business credit card when your main need is routine, card-accepted purchasing and you can manage statement repayment. Choose a business line of credit when you need revolving cash for operating liquidity or non-card bills and can satisfy the lender’s repayment, documentation, collateral or guarantee requirements. If both could work, select the written offer that has the lower all-in cost for your actual borrowing pattern and the clearest, most manageable downside if cash flow weakens.
