You do not have to turn off every stock-price alert. Disable or reduce notifications when they make you check prices reflexively, lose sleep or trade on short-term emotion. Keep a small number of rules-based alerts when each one serves a written purpose, such as a planned buy range, a risk limit, an earnings event or an operational deadline.
An alert is information, not an order. Before acting, check the broader market and company context, liquidity, spread, position size and the risk rule in your plan. No published figure establishes what percentage of investors should disable alerts, and no study here proves that every alert causes harm.

Why stock alerts can become a problem
Price notifications shorten the distance between a market move and your attention. That can be useful when you genuinely need to respond quickly, but it can also turn investing into a stream of prompts. The relevant question is not whether alerts are inherently good or bad; it is whether a particular alert improves a decision you already planned to make.
The SEC and FINRA warned in a 2019 investor bulletin that real-time social-sentiment information and buy/sell indicators can encourage emotionally driven or impulsive decisions. Their guidance is direct: “Create and follow a long-term financial plan. Do not let short-term emotions about investments disrupt your long-term financial objectives.” Although that bulletin discusses sentiment tools rather than every kind of price alert, the same discipline applies to any notification that tempts you to act without consulting your plan.

A 2014 SEC behavioral-patterns bulletin identifies active trading, the disposition effect (holding losers too long or selling winners too quickly), manias and panics, momentum investing, noise trading and inadequate diversification as behaviors that can undermine results. It summarizes evidence that “Active trading generally results in the underperformance of an investor’s portfolio.” Turning off an alert cannot fix those behaviors by itself, but removing unnecessary prompts can make them less automatic.
The UK Financial Conduct Authority’s 2025 behavioral analysis describes push notifications as digital-engagement practices and reports that users exposed to such features traded more frequently on the app. This supports reducing unnecessary push alerts; it does not establish that every alert causes harm or that disabling notifications will improve returns.
Keep alerts, reduce them or turn them off?
Use the following test for each notification. An alert earns a place only when you can state the action it permits, the information you will check first and the time horizon of the decision.
Recommended Free Tools
| Question | Keep a narrow alert | Reduce or disable alerts |
|---|---|---|
| Investment horizon | Short-term or event-driven strategy where timing is part of the written plan. | Long-term, diversified investing where daily price changes do not alter the plan. |
| Written action rule | The trigger maps to a defined buy range, risk limit, event or deadline. | You cannot describe what action the alert is meant to trigger. |
| Emotional response | You can read the message without feeling compelled to trade. | You open the app reflexively, panic-sell, chase gains or lose sleep. |
| Need for speed | A delay could breach a documented risk control or operational requirement. | There is no meaningful consequence to reviewing the position later. |
| Liquidity and execution | The security is liquid enough for the planned order and you will verify spread and size. | The notification could prompt a rushed order in a thinly traded security. |
| Opportunity cost | Checking the alert replaces no important activity and remains within a set review window. | Monitoring and frequent trading consume time or lead to avoidable costs and taxes. |
Signs that your current settings are too stimulating
Consider a change if several of these describe your behavior:
- You open your brokerage app immediately after every notification, even when nothing in your plan changed.
- You feel compelled to trade after a single percentage move or headline.
- You check overnight prices repeatedly or lose sleep over them.
- You sell during a sharp decline before reviewing your asset allocation and cash needs.
- You cannot explain why an alert exists or what evidence would justify acting on it.
- You set many overlapping dollar alerts and treat each one as a separate signal.
- You monitor positions more often than your goals, tax situation or risk controls require.
These signs do not prove that alerts caused the problem. They show that the current notification design is reinforcing a monitoring habit that may conflict with your plan.

Which stock alerts are actually useful?
Planned entry ranges
A price or percentage threshold can notify you that an asset has reached a valuation or allocation range you documented in advance. The alert should start a review, not an automatic purchase. Recheck your thesis, diversification, available cash, valuation assumptions and order size before submitting anything.
Risk limits and portfolio guardrails
An alert can flag a breach of a maximum position size, a stop-review level or a cash/liquidity requirement. Separate a notification from an executable stop order: an alert may arrive late, and a market order may fill at a different price. Verify the rule and the current market before acting.
Earnings, dividends and corporate actions
Event reminders can be valuable when you need to review an earnings release, tender offer, merger vote, dividend date or other corporate action. Record the decision deadline and the information you must read. An event notification is not a prediction about the share price.
Operational deadlines
Alerts tied to an expiring option, a required account action, a margin requirement or a tax-related deadline serve an administrative purpose. Keep them if missing the date would create a concrete risk, and route them to a channel you reliably monitor.
Percentage-change alerts
Percentage thresholds can be less noisy than very narrow dollar triggers, especially for securities whose price changes over time. Choose a width that matches your plan rather than a number that produces messages for ordinary market fluctuations. A wider threshold does not make the underlying investment safer; it simply reduces the number of prompts.

List the security, trigger, delivery channel, frequency and the date you created it. Include alerts on watchlists, retirement accounts and separate trading apps.
- Write the purpose beside each item. Use a concrete statement such as “review position if it exceeds 8% of the portfolio” or “read the earnings release before deciding.” If you cannot write an action rule, delete the alert.
- Remove duplicates and low-value triggers. Keep one alert for a decision rather than several nearby thresholds that all generate the same reaction.
- Replace narrow dollar triggers when appropriate. A wider percentage threshold may better reflect your intended move, but use it only when it fits the security and the written plan.
- Silence the most intrusive channels first. Turn off sound, vibration and lock-screen previews before deleting an alert you may need for risk control. The notification can remain available inside the app or message center.
- Consolidate delivery. Route remaining messages to one channel and choose a review window. Avoid having the same trigger arrive as a push notification, text and email.
- Add a cooling-off rule. For discretionary trades, require a pause—such as rereading the investment thesis and waiting until your scheduled review—unless a documented risk or deadline rule requires immediate action.
- Reassess after a month. Note how often you checked prices, which alerts led to planned actions and which produced only anxiety or noise. Review the setup again after a major life, income, tax or portfolio change.
How to change notification settings at a brokerage
Labels differ by provider and account type, but the sequence is usually similar: open the brokerage’s alerts or notification center, select the security and trigger, then choose delivery methods. Fidelity’s official documentation illustrates the common pattern: users can create price-movement and percentage-change triggers for stocks, exchange-traded funds, options and mutual funds; delivery choices include pop-ups or sounds, and triggered messages can appear in the Message Center. Treat this as an example of available controls, not a recommendation of one provider.
- Open the account’s Alerts, Notifications or Message Center area.
- Select Price, Price movement or Percentage change, depending on the trigger you need.
- Review the threshold, time period and security. Confirm that the alert applies to the correct account and instrument.
- Under delivery options, disable sound, vibration and lock-screen previews if they are unnecessary. Keep an in-app message when you still need a record.
- Save the change, then check that the old alert is not still active in another watchlist or account.
- Test your review process with a hypothetical trigger: identify the documents, cash, position-size limit and order type you would check before trading.
Brokerage interfaces can change. If a setting is missing, look for separate mobile-app and website controls, account-level versus security-level alerts, and a message archive. Do not assume that muting a push notification cancels an email or an operational warning.
Choose a review cadence that matches your strategy
No regulator prescribes one monitoring frequency for everyone. Your suitable cadence depends on goals, tax circumstances, liquidity needs and risk controls.
| Investor situation | Possible review pattern | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term, diversified portfolio | Weekly, monthly or quarterly review, according to the written plan. | Allocation drift, contributions, cash needs, fees, tax consequences and changes to the investment thesis. |
| Goal approaching or cash need ahead | Scheduled reviews tied to the date and funding requirement. | Whether risk, liquidity and withdrawal timing still fit the goal. |
| Event-driven investor | Event reminders plus a defined reading and decision window. | Primary filings or releases, valuation, position size and downside scenarios. |
| Short-term trader | Continuous or frequent monitoring only when required by the strategy and infrastructure. | Spread, liquidity, news context, order type, position size and the prewritten risk rule. |
A calendar appointment or portfolio review worksheet can replace real-time prompts for investors whose plans do not require immediate execution. The objective is deliberate review, not ignoring material information.

If you trade short term, make alerts part of a control system
Short-term traders may need alerts for execution or risk management. The safeguard is to define the response before the notification arrives. For each alert, record:
- the exact trigger and the market or time condition;
- the maximum position size and acceptable loss;
- the order type and liquidity requirements;
- the news or filing sources you will check;
- the condition that cancels the trade; and
- the person or system responsible for monitoring it.
When an alert fires, confirm the bid-ask spread, available volume, current news, portfolio exposure and correlation with existing positions. A notification is not an order, and a displayed price is not a guaranteed execution price. If the alert does not correspond to a prewritten rule, classify it as information and defer the decision to your review process.
A pause protocol for panic-selling urges
Turning off alerts may reduce prompts, but you still need a response for a sudden decline. Use a written sequence:
- Pause the trade. Do not submit a discretionary order while reacting to the first notification.
- Identify the type of move. Separate a broad-market decline, a company-specific development, a trading halt or an apparent data error.
- Read the relevant information. Check the company release or filing, your allocation and your cash requirements rather than relying on a social-media headline.
- Compare with your plan. Ask whether the thesis, risk limit, time horizon or diversification target changed.
- Choose the permitted action. Rebalance, hold, reduce or do nothing only if that action is allowed by your written rules.
- Record the reason. A brief note creates accountability and helps distinguish a planned decision from an emotional reaction.
MoneySense advises taking a deliberate pause before significant investment changes and notes that frequent trading does not equal better portfolio management. The pause is a decision aid, not a promise that losses will be avoided.

Muting sounds but keeping lock-screen previews
A silent banner can still invite repeated checking. Disable lock-screen previews or show only a generic message, then review the full alert during your chosen window.
Deleting every alert without replacing risk controls
Removing operational or risk-limit reminders can create a new problem. Keep alerts whose missed deadline or breach has a documented consequence, and place them in a channel you will monitor reliably.

Using an alert as a stop-loss
An alert only tells you that a condition occurred. It does not guarantee an execution price. If your strategy requires an order-based risk control, understand the order type, liquidity and gap risk separately.
Reacting to percentage changes without context
A percentage move can result from a split, dividend adjustment, thin liquidity or a broad market event. Verify the data and corporate-action context before interpreting it as a thesis change.
Checking more often after reducing notifications
Some investors replace push prompts with manual refreshing. Set a calendar-based review time, remove the app shortcut from the first screen and keep a written list of the information you actually need.
Assuming fewer alerts guarantee better returns
The available evidence supports reducing impulsive engagement, not a universal performance benefit. Your results still depend on diversification, costs, taxes, security selection, risk and implementation.
When to revisit the decision
Review notification settings at least after the first month and whenever your circumstances change materially. Revisit them when your investment horizon shortens, income or emergency cash needs change, a position becomes unusually large, you begin using options or margin, or a new tax or corporate-action deadline appears. A setting that was appropriate for a short-term trade may be distracting in a retirement account, while an operational deadline may justify an otherwise quiet account alert.
The practical standard is simple: every retained alert should support a documented decision, and every removed alert should be replaced by an intentional way to receive information you genuinely need.
The Bottom Line
Keep only alerts that map to a written risk, entry, event or operational rule. For long-term investors, silencing intrusive channels and moving to scheduled reviews can create a calmer process; for short-term traders, retain narrowly defined alerts but verify context before acting. No setting eliminates market risk or guarantees better returns.
