Yes. Federal rules generally let you take a required minimum distribution (RMD) in monthly or quarterly installments, or as one annual withdrawal, as long as the total distributed by the applicable deadline reaches that year’s required amount. Neither schedule is established by IRS guidance as universally better for investment returns. The practical choice depends on your spending pattern, tax withholding, provider rules and ability to monitor deadlines.
What the RMD rule actually allows
An RMD is the minimum amount that must be withdrawn from a covered retirement account for a particular year. It is different from an optional withdrawal above that minimum. For IRAs, IRS Publication 590-B (2025) states: “The yearly required minimum distribution can be taken in a series of installments (monthly, quarterly, etc.) as long as the total distributions for the year are at least as much as the minimum required amount.” IRS guidance for employer plans describes the same basic principle for plan distributions.

That means a monthly schedule is permitted under the federal minimum-distribution rule, but permission from the IRS does not guarantee that every custodian or employer plan offers monthly payments. Your account agreement, plan administrator or IRA custodian controls the available payment frequencies and processing cutoffs.

Monthly installments versus one annual withdrawal
The two schedules meet the same federal minimum when the required total is received on time. Their practical differences are in cash flow, administration and the way you manage the money after it leaves the account.

When your RMD is due
After the first RMD year
For each year after your required beginning date, the general deadline is December 31. The IRS RMD guidance states: “For each year after your required beginning date, you must withdraw your RMD by December 31.” A payment that is scheduled before December 31 but does not actually process until the following year may not satisfy the earlier year, so confirm the provider’s settlement and cutoff rules.
Your first RMD
For most owners, the first RMD can be taken by April 1 of the year after the year in which the applicable required beginning date occurs. Using that delayed deadline is optional. If you take the first distribution in the following calendar year, you will generally also owe the second year’s RMD by December 31 of that same year.

Concentrating two taxable distributions in one calendar year can affect your marginal tax bracket, estimated-tax payments and income-related thresholds, so compare both timing choices before delaying.

Workplace-plan differences
The precise required beginning date is not identical for every account. Employer-plan terms can affect payment methods, and a plan may require distributions after age 73 even when you are still working. Ask the plan administrator about that plan’s required beginning date, installment options and processing deadlines rather than assuming IRA rules apply unchanged.
How taxes and withholding work
For a traditional IRA or taxable employer-plan distribution, the taxable portion is generally included in income for the year you receive it. Amounts that were previously taxed or are otherwise tax-free can be exceptions. Whether you receive the money monthly or annually does not, by itself, change the general income-tax character of the distribution.
Withholding is only a prepayment. It does not guarantee that the amount withheld will equal your eventual federal or state tax liability. A payer may use different procedures for recurring periodic payments and a one-time nonperiodic payment. For nonperiodic payments, review the payer’s election process and the information on IRS Form W-4R before the transaction is submitted.
Recommended Free Tools
- Ask whether the provider treats each monthly payment as a periodic payment and which withholding form or election applies.
- For a lump sum, confirm the default withholding rate and whether you can elect a different amount where permitted.
- Coordinate withholding with other income and any estimated-tax payments; do not treat withholding as a calculation of your final tax bill.
A Roth IRA owner is not subject to lifetime RMDs under current rules, although beneficiaries and other account types can have different requirements. If the account is inherited, use the applicable beneficiary rules instead of assuming the owner rules described here.

How to calculate the amount
The RMD is generally based on the account’s prior year-end balance and an applicable IRS distribution period. The correct table or method can vary with the account type, the owner’s circumstances and whether the account is inherited. Use the current IRS RMD worksheets, or have the custodian or plan administrator calculate the amount.
- List each account that is subject to an RMD and obtain its balance as of the preceding December 31.
- Identify the distribution period and table that apply to your age, account type and beneficiary circumstances.
- Calculate each account’s required amount using the current IRS method, then ask the provider to confirm the figure.
- Decide whether the provider will distribute from that account or whether the plan permits aggregation across accounts. Do not assume rules for one type of account apply to another.
- Keep the calculation, statements and distribution confirmations with your tax records.
An amount withdrawn above the current year’s RMD is still an optional extra distribution. It generally does not satisfy a future year’s RMD, so taking a large amount now does not eliminate the next year’s requirement.
When monthly payments are a sensible fit
You need predictable cash flow
Monthly installments can resemble a paycheck and reduce the need to move a large sum into a bank account and manage it over the rest of the year. They may be useful when the RMD is primarily covering recurring bills rather than a one-time expense.

You can monitor the cumulative total
Installments require an annual check. A missed payment, a changed bank instruction or a provider error can leave the year’s total below the required amount. Set a calendar reminder well before December 31 and compare the year-to-date distributions with the confirmed RMD.

How to set up monthly RMD payments
- Confirm eligibility and options. Call the plan administrator or IRA custodian and ask whether monthly installments are available, when they can begin, and whether the plan imposes a minimum payment or fixed schedule.
- Confirm the annual amount. Compare the provider’s calculation with your own worksheet and identify whether the amount is for the current year only.
- Choose the payment date. Select a date that allows time for weekends, holidays, bank transfers and any provider cutoff. A nominal December payment is not useful if it settles in January.
- Complete withholding and delivery elections. Specify the destination account and review the withholding election for the payment type. Check the first confirmation against what you requested.
- Track every payment. Keep a simple year-to-date total from statements or the provider’s transaction history. Record gross distribution, withholding and net deposit separately.
- Reconcile before year-end. If an installment was skipped or changed, ask the provider how to make up the shortfall before the applicable deadline. Obtain written confirmation of the final annual total.
How to take an annual lump sum
- Request a current RMD calculation. Confirm the account balance used, the applicable distribution period and whether the amount has changed since an earlier estimate.
- Check the deadline and processing time. Ask when the provider considers the distribution made and how long electronic transfers or checks take.
- Submit the distribution request. Select the correct account, gross amount, delivery method and withholding election. Read the confirmation before approving it.
- Verify settlement. Confirm that the funds left the retirement account and arrived where intended. Save the statement showing the date and gross amount.
- Plan the cash. Separate money needed for near-term spending from money that will remain invested, and account for taxes that may be due on the taxable portion.
What happens if you miss or underpay an RMD?
An RMD shortfall can trigger an excise tax. Current IRS participant guidance describes a general 25% tax on the missed amount, reduced to 10% if the shortfall is corrected within two years. Relief may be available in some circumstances, including cases involving reasonable cause; follow the current IRS instructions and document why the error occurred and how it was corrected.
The safest response is to contact the custodian promptly, take the missed amount as soon as practical, retain proof of the correction and ask a tax professional how to report the shortfall and request any available relief. A provider’s failure or a misunderstanding does not make it wise to wait until the next scheduled installment.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose monthly installments if regular cash flow matters, your provider supports them, and you are willing to monitor the annual total.
- Choose one annual withdrawal if you prefer one transaction, have a specific annual use for the funds, and can request it early enough to resolve processing problems.
- Before either choice, confirm the required beginning date, the current-year amount, the payment deadline and the provider’s withholding procedure.
- If delaying the first RMD until April 1 would create two distributions in one calendar year, compare the tax consequences with your other income.
- Do not treat an extra withdrawal as credit toward a future RMD, and do not assume a Roth IRA owner’s rules apply to an inherited account.
Both schedules can satisfy the federal rule. The better choice is the one your account permits and that you can execute accurately, on time and with a cash-flow and tax plan that fits the rest of your finances.
