Starting before full retirement age (FRA) generally permanently lowers your monthly retirement benefit. Waiting after FRA increases the benefit until age 70. Federal taxability, meanwhile, depends on your filing status, other income, tax-exempt interest and benefit amount. The sound comparison is each claiming age’s after-tax cash flow—not the mistaken idea that an “85% taxable” result means an 85% tax rate.
This is the federal framework for the 2025 tax year. State taxation, health, longevity, employment, household cash needs and survivor considerations can change the decision, so use your own Social Security estimates and a current-year tax calculation.

What changes when you claim at 62, full retirement age or 70?
Social Security retirement benefits can begin as early as age 62. If you start before FRA, the number of months you claim early determines a permanent reduction. FRA depends on your birth year, so there is no single reduction percentage that applies to everyone.

Waiting beyond FRA earns delayed-retirement credits. For people born in 1943 or later, the Social Security Administration’s 2025 statistical supplement describes credits of 8% per year; credits stop accruing at age 70. Your actual dollar benefit also depends on your earnings record. The SSA explains that the claiming decision “affects your monthly benefit amount for the rest of your life.” SSA: At what age should I start receiving my Social Security retirement benefits?

| After FRA through age 70 | Delayed-retirement credits increase the monthly amount; credits stop at 70. | Your credit rate and starting amount depend on applicable SSA rules and your record. |
To illustrate the scale without implying a typical outcome, SSA’s 2026 maximum-benefit example assumes a worker earned the taxable maximum in every year beginning at age 22. The example shows monthly benefits of $2,969 at 62, $4,152 at FRA and $5,181 at 70. Those are maximum-earnings illustrations, not forecasts for an ordinary worker. | Beginning at full retirement age | $4,152 |

How federal taxability of Social Security is calculated
Social Security is not automatically tax-free or fully taxable. For the 2025 tax-year framework, the IRS first uses a “combined income” comparison. The starting measure is:
One-half of your annual Social Security benefits + adjusted gross income and other income + tax-exempt interest.
Tax-exempt interest is included in this comparison even though it is generally not itself subject to federal income tax. If the result exceeds the base amount for your filing status, some benefits may be taxable and the IRS worksheet determines the amount. Use the publication and worksheet for the tax year of the return you are filing; thresholds can change. IRS Publication 17 (2025), Your Federal Income Tax

| Filing status or situation | 2025 base amount used in the initial comparison |
|---|---|
| Single, head of household, qualifying surviving spouse, or certain married-filing-separately taxpayers who lived apart all year | $25,000 |
| Married filing jointly | $32,000 |
| Married filing separately and lived with a spouse at any time during 2025 | $0 |
Crossing a base amount does not mean your entire benefit becomes taxable. The detailed worksheet accounts for the amount of benefits and your other income. The IRS says that generally up to 50% of benefits may be taxable, while up to 85% may be taxable in circumstances such as combined income above $34,000 for an individual or $44,000 on a joint return. Special married-filing-separately rules apply.
“Up to 85% taxable” is not an 85% tax rate. It means no more than 85% of the benefit is included in federal taxable income under the applicable calculation. That included amount is then taxed under the ordinary federal income-tax rates that apply to your overall taxable income. The Social Security Administration gives the same basic explanation and defines combined income as adjusted gross income, tax-exempt interest and half of annual benefits. SSA: Must I pay taxes on Social Security benefits?
Why a tax bill does not automatically favor early claiming
Claiming earlier can produce payments for more years, but it locks in a smaller monthly amount. Delaying can produce fewer years of payments but a larger check each month. A larger benefit can also increase the dollars of Social Security included in the tax calculation when combined with other income. Conversely, taking a smaller benefit does not guarantee a tax-free result if wages, pensions, investment income or tax-exempt interest already place you above the relevant thresholds.

The outcome depends on payment timing, total income in each year, filing status, longevity, investment or work income and household circumstances. Treat tax as one input to a lifetime-income decision, not as a reason to sacrifice a permanently larger benefit without comparing the totals.

A practical way to compare your own claiming ages
-
Collect benefit estimates at several ages
Sign in to your my Social Security account and record the estimates for plausible starting ages between 62 and 70. SSA says the account can show estimates at different claiming times. If you need an additional calculation tool, use SSA’s Benefit Calculators. Check that your earnings record is accurate; an estimate is only as useful as the record behind it.
-
Build an income forecast for each start date
For every claiming-age scenario, list expected wages, pensions, withdrawals, interest, dividends, capital gains and tax-exempt interest for each relevant year. Include a spouse’s income when filing jointly. Record the annual Social Security amount produced by the chosen start age rather than assuming the monthly estimate alone answers the tax question.
-
Run the IRS worksheet for the applicable year
Use the current IRS publication and worksheet, beginning with half of benefits plus other income and tax-exempt interest. Apply the filing-status base amount and the detailed calculation to determine how much, if any, is included in federal taxable income. Repeat the calculation when income changes—for example, when employment ends, a pension begins or required distributions start.

Compare after-tax cash flow, not just the tax line
Place the estimated benefit and estimated federal tax side by side for each age. Compare the household’s after-tax income in early retirement, the years before age 70 and later retirement. A scenario with a larger tax bill can still leave more after-tax income if the benefit increase is larger; only the complete calculation can show that.

Add the non-tax decision factors
Evaluate near-term spending needs, health and longevity expectations, continued work, a spouse’s benefit, survivor protection and how the household would fund the waiting period. Keep federal estimates separate from state-tax research, because the federal rules above do not establish how any particular state treats Social Security.
Household factors that can outweigh the tax difference
Health and longevity
Delaying is most valuable when you expect to collect the higher monthly amount for a long period. A serious health condition or an immediate cash shortfall may point toward earlier income, but neither conclusion follows from taxability alone. Use realistic, personal assumptions rather than a universal break-even age; the official sources do not publish one after-tax break-even age for everyone.
Employment and other income
Wages, pensions, investment income and tax-exempt interest can push combined income above a tax threshold regardless of when benefits start. Conversely, a low-income gap between stopping work and claiming benefits may be a period when the tax calculation is lower. Model the actual calendar years rather than applying one income level to retirement as a whole.
Spouse and survivor needs
For a married household, compare both spouses’ claiming choices and the income a survivor may have after the first death. A decision that looks efficient on an individual return can produce a different household result when filing status changes or one benefit ends. The tax thresholds and the benefit estimates must therefore be evaluated at the household level when a joint return is expected.

Liquidity and longevity risk
Waiting requires another source of spending money—employment, savings, a pension or a portfolio withdrawal. Account for the tax effects of using that source and the risk that markets or expenses change. The purpose of the comparison is not to maximize a single monthly check in isolation; it is to match reliable income with the years in which the household needs it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing taxable share with tax rate. An 85% inclusion limit does not mean an 85% payment to the IRS.
- Looking only at Social Security. Half of benefits is combined with other income and tax-exempt interest for the initial test.
- Using the wrong filing-status threshold. The 2025 amounts differ for individual returns, joint returns and married-filing-separately situations.
- Treating 2025 thresholds as permanent. Confirm the publication and worksheet for the tax year being filed.
- Assuming a smaller benefit is always tax-free. Other household income can make part of an early-claimed benefit taxable.
- Ignoring the permanent claiming adjustment. A tax saving in one year may be small compared with a permanently reduced monthly benefit.
- Applying a maximum-benefit example to yourself. SSA’s $2,969, $4,152 and $5,181 figures describe a worker with maximum taxable earnings from age 22, not a typical or personalized estimate.
- Forgetting state rules. The federal framework does not answer whether your state taxes Social Security.
- Relying on a universal break-even age. The sources do not establish one after-tax answer for every taxpayer.
When to update the comparison
Revisit the estimates after a major income or household change: stopping or restarting work, a pension beginning, a large capital gain, a change in marital status, a spouse’s claiming decision, a health development or a change in tax law. Recalculate with the current IRS worksheet and the latest SSA estimate rather than carrying forward an old threshold or benefit amount.
The SSA’s Plan for Retirement materials provide planning and withholding guidance. If the decision is difficult because several income sources or survivor issues interact, a qualified professional can model those facts; verify credentials, scope and current rules before relying on advice.
