Visit South Carolina before deciding to move, and make the decision by region and county rather than by the state’s vacation image. Beaches, historic cities, Blue Ridge scenery and outdoor recreation can make an excellent trip, but permanent life adds housing, taxes, insurance, commuting, schools and job-market constraints. A shoulder-season visit plus a summer stay, each including ordinary weekday errands, is the most reliable way to test the fit.
South Carolina can be relatively affordable on paper: the 2025 second-quarter JobsEQ cost-of-living index is 91.8 (U.S. base 100). That advantage is uneven, however. Coastal insurance and housing, local sales taxes and a job that pays below the relevant metro’s market can erase the difference. Treat a move as a county-level budget and employment decision, not as an extension of a holiday.

Decide whether your household can handle an ordinary year in one specific South Carolina region, then use a vacation to gather evidence. A trip focused only on attractions can hide summer humidity, commuting time, school logistics, insurance costs and neighborhood conditions.
- Choose two candidate regions, not an abstract statewide destination.
- Visit once in a shoulder season and again during summer heat.
- Spend at least one weekday following a normal commute, grocery run and healthcare or school errand.
- Build a budget from the exact ZIP code before making an offer or signing a lease.
Is South Carolina affordable enough for a permanent move?
Statewide figures suggest a cost advantage, but they are averages rather than a household quote. Census 2020–2024 medians show an owner-occupied home value of $259,000, gross rent of $1,180 and household income of $69,324. The Census Bureau estimates the July 2025 population at 5,570,274, up 8.8% from the April 2020 estimate base; growing demand can produce very different prices between counties.

JobsEQ’s 2025Q2 model puts South Carolina’s cost-of-living index at 91.8 against a U.S. base of 100. It models an annual average salary of $60,959 and purchasing power of $66,407. Those modeled statewide numbers do not predict your occupation, rent, commute or insurance bill.
What must be in a county-level budget?
- Rent or purchase price for the exact neighborhood.
- Homeowners, renters, wind and flood insurance quotes where applicable.
- Utilities, vehicle costs and the actual work commute.
- County property taxes and local sales taxes.
- Child-care, school and healthcare costs for your household.
How do South Carolina taxes affect the move calculation?
South Carolina Department of Revenue says, “South Carolina has an Individual Income Tax, with a top rate of 6.0% for 2025.” The statewide sales-tax rate is 6%, but counties add their own rates. In the department’s displayed 2026 schedule, county totals range from 6% in Beaufort to 9% in Berkeley and Charleston.

Which part of South Carolina fits your work and lifestyle?
The right region depends on where you earn income, how much driving you accept and whether coastal exposure is worth the lifestyle premium. County wage data show why a statewide average can mislead.
| Area | Average weekly wage, Q1 2026 | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Charleston County | $1,492 | Highest figure among the listed counties |
| Greenville County | $1,346 | 302,800 covered jobs in March 2026 |
| Lexington County | $1,123 | Columbia-area comparison |
| Horry County | $974 | Myrtle Beach-area comparison |
| South Carolina statewide | $1,296 | Ranked 37th nationally |
These are Bureau of Labor Statistics averages for covered employment, not guarantees for an individual offer. Match your occupation and employer location to the relevant metro before assuming the cost index creates savings.
Is the Upstate a good relocation test?
Greenville and surrounding Upstate counties are a useful test for readers who want a large employment base with access to Blue Ridge scenery and outdoor recreation. Greenville County’s 302,800 covered jobs in March 2026 indicate substantial employment activity, but the county’s rent, home prices, commute and wage for your field still determine affordability.

Should you compare the Midlands?
Columbia and nearby Midlands counties suit households prioritizing a capital-region location and a less coastal risk profile. Check the job site and daily route rather than relying on a statewide commute average; a central location does not eliminate county-level traffic or school-boundary differences.
Why is the Lowcountry a stronger move-versus-vacation contrast?
Charleston, Beaufort and Horry County offer the beaches, historic districts and tourism amenities many visitors love. Tourism is economically significant: a 2022 state analysis reported $27.9 billion in visitor spending, $2.6 billion in tax revenue and more than 257,000 supported jobs. A resident must add storm exposure, flood and wind coverage, insurance deductibles and year-round service availability to that attractive vacation picture.
Can you tolerate South Carolina’s climate and storm risk?
NOAA’s 2025 climate summary describes hot, humid summers and mild winters. It also reports that 2015–2024 was the warmest decade on record and that average temperatures have risen more than 1°F since the early 20th century. A cool-season weekend cannot tell you whether you can live comfortably with summer heat, humidity, thunderstorms and air-conditioning costs.

Coastal risk requires a separate decision. NOAA records 168 tropical cyclones or remnants affecting South Carolina from 1900 through 2024, including 42 hurricane-strength storms. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division says, “The greatest threat to life and property associated with a hurricane and tropical storm is storm surge.” Its guidance also warns that every county can be affected and that storms can bring high winds, tornadoes and inland flooding.
What should a coastal buyer verify?
- Official evacuation zone and the property’s elevation.
- Flood-zone designation and a flood-insurance quote.
- Wind coverage, deductibles and exclusions in the homeowners policy.
- Past claims or storm damage disclosed for the property.
- How quickly you can reach an evacuation route during a major storm.
No statewide source can price those policies for a particular address. Obtain quotes using the exact property, construction details, deductible and coverage limits before signing a purchase contract.

- Plan two seasons. Take one shoulder-season trip and one summer trip so you experience humidity and heat as well as milder weather.
- Run a weekday routine. Drive from the likely home to work, school or childcare, healthcare and a grocery store at normal operating hours.
- Price the exact address. Request rent or purchase figures, utilities, vehicle costs, county taxes and homeowners, renters, wind and flood insurance for the ZIP code.
- Check income against the local market. Compare a written job offer or documented remote-work income with county and metro wage data; do not replace that exercise with the statewide cost index.
- Complete coastal due diligence. If the destination is coastal or flood-prone, check the official evacuation zone and obtain coverage quotes before making an offer.
What is the practical verdict?
South Carolina is worth visiting for nearly anyone considering a move, but it is not wise to relocate on vacation impressions alone. Choose a region based on employment and daily access, then let a county-level budget—including insurance and taxes—decide whether the lifestyle remains affordable. For coastal areas, storm-surge and flood checks are conditions of the move, not optional research.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is South Carolina’s average commute time?
The Census Bureau reports a statewide mean commute of 25.6 minutes. That number masks county and employer differences, so time the actual route during a weekday before choosing a neighborhood.

No. The South Carolina Department of Revenue’s statement concerns estate and gift taxes; most property taxes are administered by counties and still belong in a homeowner’s annual budget.
What does “covered jobs” mean in the wage figures?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts jobs covered by its unemployment-insurance system. The total is a measure of payroll employment in the county, not the number of residents, vacancies or a promise that a particular occupation is hiring.
Why can two coastal homes with similar prices have different monthly costs?
Elevation, flood-zone status, construction, deductibles and coverage limits can change wind and flood premiums substantially. Insurance quotes must be requested for the exact address rather than inferred from the sale price.
