Should You Keep Investing in an S&P 500 Index Fund When Valuations Are High?

Usually, yes—if regular S&P 500 contributions still fit your long-term plan. A high valuation can reduce the return that future buyers might reasonably expect over a long horizon, but it does not reliably tell you when a decline will begin. Stopping contributions creates a second, harder decision: when to buy back in.

The more useful question is whether your target mix of U.S. stocks, other assets and cash still matches your time horizon and ability to withstand losses. You can keep investing while changing where new money goes, rather than treating a valuation reading as a signal to sell everything.

What a high valuation actually tells you

Valuation compares a market’s price with a measure such as corporate earnings. When investors pay a high price for each dollar of expected earnings, future returns can be more sensitive to disappointing profits, slower growth or a fall in the price investors are willing to pay for those earnings.

That is a long-run risk statement, not a countdown clock. Vanguard explains that valuations have more influence on equity returns over periods approaching 10 years or longer, while earnings and economic growth tend to matter more over shorter periods. Its summary is useful: “Elevated valuations alone typically don’t trigger market corrections.” Read the full explanation in Vanguard’s equity-returns analysis.

A dated example, not a live signal

Vanguard’s fact sheet reported a 26.1-times price/earnings ratio for both the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) and its S&P 500 Index benchmark as of March 31, 2026. That number is a historical snapshot. The ratio changes as prices move, earnings are updated and providers use different earnings definitions, so it should not be presented as the current multiple without checking the latest fact sheet.

Vanguard’s broader valuation work describes U.S. equities as stretched because prices may already reflect high expectations for future earnings. A high starting multiple can make disappointing results hurt more; it cannot establish that a correction is imminent. Vanguard’s global research lead, Qian Wang, put the uncertainty this way: “Our models indicate a likelihood that U.S. equities will lag non-U.S. stocks over the next decade. But there’s still a meaningful chance that U.S. stocks will outperform.” That is a forecast range, not a promise or an individualized instruction. The discussion appears in Vanguard’s valuation research.

Keep investing and keep the same allocation are different decisions

If you invest from each paycheck

When your existing target allocation still fits, valuation uncertainty alone is a weak reason to interrupt an established schedule. Each contribution buys at that day’s price, so you purchase fewer shares at higher prices and more shares after declines. More importantly, stopping requires a successful re-entry decision.

Strong and weak market days often cluster. Vanguard’s illustration of this risk uses a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio tracking the S&P 500 from 1988 through 2024. Remaining fully invested ended at $4.9 million; missing the 10 best days ended at $2.3 million, missing 20 ended at $1.4 million, and missing 30 ended at $0.9 million. These are historical hypothetical outcomes, not a forecast, guarantee or proof that an S&P 500 fund is suitable for every investor. If you have a lump sum or a portfolio that drifted

A new lump sum and an oversized holding present an allocation and pacing question, not a market-top question. Decide what mix you want, then consider whether to invest immediately under that plan or spread purchases over a defined schedule you can follow without trying to predict headlines. Vanguard’s “How to invest your next dollar” framework describes directing future contributions toward the preferred mix instead of relying on a one-time switch.

If the S&P 500 has become too large

Rebalancing can be sensible when one holding or one country dominates your portfolio, your risk tolerance has changed, or your spending date is closer. The reason is that the portfolio no longer matches your plan—not that a valuation metric has identified a known top. You can sell part of the position, redirect dividends and new contributions, or use a combination while considering taxes and transaction costs that apply to your account.

Run this decision framework before changing contributions

Decision axis Questions to answer Why it matters
Horizon and withdrawals How many years until you need the money? Will withdrawals begin on a fixed date? A short horizon leaves less time to recover from an equity decline.
Risk capacity and tolerance Could you pay essential expenses if stocks fell sharply? Would you sell in panic? An index fund retains the risks of the companies in its index; comfort and financial capacity are separate tests.
Geographic diversification Is an S&P 500-only position intentional, or would a broader U.S. and international mix fit better? Vanguard favors some international diversification in its models while acknowledging that U.S. stocks could still outperform.
Stock/bond/cash mix Does your current percentage in stocks match your goals and assumptions about returns? Vanguard’s allocation views depend on its own horizon, expected-return and risk assumptions; they are not universal prescriptions.
Implementation What are the fund’s expense ratio, trading costs, bid-ask spread and tracking record? Fees and trading frictions reduce the return you receive, even when the index rises.
Change pacing Will you redirect future deposits, rebalance periodically or make one transaction? A contribution-based change reduces dependence on one exact market-timing decision.

Understand what an S&P 500 index fund does—and does not do

An index fund pools investors’ money and seeks to track a benchmark rather than select individual stocks in an attempt to beat it. An S&P 500 fund therefore gives concentrated exposure to large U.S. companies and remains an equity investment. Indexing does not remove market risk, valuation risk or losses during a bear market.

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov explanation of index funds notes that a fund can lag its index because of operating expenses, trading costs, sampling methods and tracking error. An exchange-traded fund can also trade above or below its net asset value during the day, and brokerage charges vary by provider.

Use fund documents, not a generic label

Costs and construction differ among funds that follow the same benchmark. As one dated example, the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF summary prospectus dated April 28, 2026 reported total annual fund operating expenses of 0.03%. That is the fund’s stated annual operating expense figure in that prospectus, not a guarantee that every S&P 500 fund charges the same amount. Read the filing at the SEC and check your own fund’s current prospectus.

A practical way to act without making a valuation bet

  1. Write down the target allocation. Set percentages for U.S. stocks, international stocks, bonds and cash based on when you need the money and how much loss you can withstand.
  2. Compare the actual account with that target. Include workplace plans, taxable accounts and cash reserves so an S&P 500 fund is not judged in isolation.
  3. Identify the reason for a change. A shorter horizon, an oversized U.S. position or insufficient emergency cash is an allocation reason. “The P/E looks high” by itself is not a reliable sell signal.
  4. Choose a repeatable adjustment. Direct new deposits to underweight assets, rebalance at a preselected interval or use a documented one-time trade. Pick the method before reading the next market headline.
  5. Check the fund mechanics. Review the current expense ratio, holdings, tracking difference, bid-ask spread and any account or brokerage charges.
  6. Keep near-term spending separate. Money needed soon should not depend on an S&P 500 recovery. Hold the portion required for upcoming expenses in assets appropriate to that date.
  7. Record the rule and review it on schedule. A written threshold or calendar prevents a valuation headline from turning into an unplanned exit and re-entry.

Alternatives to stopping all S&P 500 contributions

Approach What it changes Main trade-off
Continue the existing schedule Keeps the current target allocation and buys through both high and low markets. You retain full equity and U.S. large-cap exposure, including the risk of a substantial decline.
Redirect new money Leaves existing shares in place while directing deposits to bonds, cash or international stocks. The portfolio changes gradually; it may remain above target for a long time.
Rebalance to a target Sells or buys enough to restore chosen percentages. Creates trading, tax or spread consequences and still cannot identify the next market move.
Broaden stock exposure Adds other U.S. companies or international markets instead of relying only on the S&P 500. Different markets can lag the S&P 500 for years, so diversification does not guarantee higher returns.
Reduce the stock percentage Moves part of the portfolio to bonds or cash to lower volatility and withdrawal risk. Expected long-run growth may be lower, and safer assets can also lose purchasing power to inflation.

When reducing or pausing contributions can be rational

A pause can make sense when it follows a personal financial constraint rather than an attempt to forecast a correction. Examples include rebuilding an emergency reserve, paying high-interest debt, meeting a near-term tuition or home-payment need, or correcting an equity allocation that is plainly too aggressive for your horizon.

Someone who cannot tolerate a large temporary loss should not assume that an S&P 500 fund is appropriate simply because it is diversified across 500 companies. Diversification reduces company-specific risk, but it does not prevent a broad stock-market decline. The sources do not provide your income, liabilities, tax status or spending date, so no individual stock percentage can be inferred from a market multiple.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes when valuations look expensive

  • Confusing an expensive market with an imminent crash. A high multiple describes starting conditions; it does not supply a date.
  • Stopping without a re-entry rule. Waiting for “clarity” often means buying only after prices have recovered.
  • Treating one P/E number as universal. Data dates, earnings definitions and index composition matter.
  • Ignoring concentration. An S&P 500 fund is diversified by company but still concentrated in one national market and one equity category.
  • Comparing expense ratios without tracking results. A low stated fee does not by itself prove the closest index tracking.
  • Using retirement money for a short-term need. An equity recovery may take longer than your withdrawal schedule allows.

How to monitor the decision over time

Review the elements that can actually change your decision: your spending date, emergency reserve, income stability, target percentages, fund costs and account tax consequences. Recheck dated valuation and fee figures before relying on them; the 26.1-times P/E and 0.03% expense figure above belong to specified 2026 documents, not to every future publication date or every fund.

Do not turn a forecast into a certainty. Vanguard’s models may favor international stocks over the next decade while still assigning a meaningful chance that U.S. stocks outperform. That uncertainty is precisely why an allocation rule, contribution schedule and risk capacity matter more than a single valuation reading.
