Should you keep investing in an S&P 500 index fund during a bear market?

Usually, if your financial plan, time horizon, risk tolerance and contribution amount have not changed, continuing your pre-set contributions is more consistent with long-term investing than trying to pause and restart around a market decline. A bear market does not reveal the bottom or provide a reliable signal that prices will soon recover. Stopping creates a second decision: when to get back in. That does not make continuing automatically right for everyone. Money needed soon, an unsuitable stock allocation, inadequate emergency savings or a changed goal can justify reviewing the plan.

This is general education, not an individualized recommendation. An S&P 500 fund still owns stocks and can lose substantial value. Review your complete finances and the specific fund before changing your contributions.

What an S&P 500 index fund is—and what it is not

An index fund is a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) designed to track a market index. The S&P 500 is the index; you cannot buy the index directly. Buying a fund gives you indirect exposure to the securities in it, as the SEC explains.

Funds may replicate an index by holding all its constituents or by sampling some of them. Trading expenses, management fees, taxes and portfolio differences create tracking error, so a fund’s return can lag the index. Read the fund’s prospectus and shareholder report for its expense ratio, other charges, tracking approach and stated risks.

The S&P 500 represents U.S. large-company stocks. It is not a complete portfolio by itself. A fund or ETF can be narrowly focused even when it owns hundreds of companies; the SEC’s asset-allocation guidance notes that diversification also involves spreading money among asset classes such as stocks and bonds. Your total portfolio—not a market headline—determines how much risk you are taking.

When continuing contributions generally fits

Keeping an automatic contribution schedule can make sense when all of these conditions are broadly true:

  • Your goal and the date you need the money have not changed.
  • You can tolerate further stock losses without abandoning the plan.
  • The contribution does not compromise emergency savings, debt payments or near-term spending.
  • The fund remains an appropriate part of your intended stock-and-bond allocation.
  • You understand the fund’s fees, tracking behavior and risks.

Regular purchases buy more fund shares when the share price is lower and fewer when it is higher. That mechanical effect is not a promise of profit, and it does not identify the market’s low point. Its main benefit is maintaining a pre-decided process instead of requiring a new forecast each month.

When a bear market is a reason to review—not necessarily to stop

Your time horizon changed

Someone saving for a goal many years away may have time to withstand volatility. Someone who needs a down payment, tuition or living expenses soon has less time to recover from a large decline. Match the portfolio to the date the money is needed, rather than to the label “bear market.” A change in that date is a legitimate reason to revisit the stock percentage.

Your willingness or ability to take risk changed

Risk tolerance is your willingness to experience losses; risk capacity is your financial ability to do so. A falling balance may show that your current stock exposure is larger than you can realistically hold. Reducing risk because the allocation was unsuitable can be rational. Reducing it only because prices fell, then planning to restore it after a rebound, requires two timing decisions.

Your cash needs changed

Do not invest money needed for rent, medical bills, taxes, emergency reserves or other near-term obligations merely because prices look lower. If the same dollars must serve both a short-term need and a long-term account, protect the short-term need first.

Continue, pause or change allocation? Compare the choices

Choice Potential fit Main risk or trade-off Questions to answer
Continue the existing contributions Long horizon, affordable contributions and an allocation you can hold through losses You remain exposed to further stock declines; recovery timing is unknown Can you keep investing if the balance falls again?
Pause contributions Cash flow has tightened, an emergency reserve is inadequate or the goal is now nearer Cash may miss future market gains; restarting becomes a timing decision What specific financial change will tell you to restart?
Change the allocation The S&P 500 share no longer matches your horizon, capacity or diversification plan A rushed switch can lock in losses or leave the portfolio inconsistent with the long-term target What target stock-and-bond mix will you maintain in both rising and falling markets?

Compare the options by goal and time horizon, liquidity, ability and willingness to tolerate additional losses, overall allocation and the fund’s actual costs. “The market is down” by itself does not answer those questions.

What history can—and cannot—tell you

Vanguard’s analysis of the S&P 500 price index from January 1, 1980, through December 31, 2023, reports an average bear-market length of 282 days and an average bull-market length of 1,018 days. The displayed average return was −30% for bear markets and 96% for bull markets. These are historical averages calculated by Vanguard with Refinitiv data, not forecasts for an individual fund or the next downturn; past performance does not guarantee future results.

Vanguard included downturns beginning in August 1987 and February 2020 as bear markets even though each lasted less than two months and did not meet the widely accepted definition discussed in its article. That methodological choice affects the averages. The figures describe an index price-return series, not the total return or actual result of your particular mutual fund or ETF. They do not provide a schedule for recovery, predict the next loss or show that every bear market will be brief. See Vanguard’s historical analysis for the definitions and calculations.

Paycheck contributions are different from a lump sum

New money arriving from each paycheck is not the same decision as investing a large sum already sitting in cash. With paycheck contributions, there may be no large balance to deploy immediately; pausing simply leaves future money uninvested until you choose to restart.

The SEC describes dollar-cost averaging as adding new money in a consistent pattern over time: “Through the investment strategy known as ‘dollar cost averaging,’ you can protect yourself from the risk of investing all of your money at the wrong time by following a consistent pattern of adding new money to your investment over a long period of time.” The alert is educational, not a prescribed S&P 500 schedule. Read the SEC investor alert.

A lump-sum investor can choose between investing immediately and staging purchases. Vanguard’s separate study says staging may reduce the drawdown and regret some loss-averse investors feel, but it also leaves cash outside the market longer. That evidence does not determine whether you should suspend recurring payroll contributions. Decide the windfall question and the paycheck question separately. The study is available in Vanguard’s cost-averaging paper.

A practical review before you change the plan

  1. Write down the goal and date. Identify what the account is for, the amount required and when withdrawals may begin. A date measured in months is a different risk problem from one measured in decades.
  2. Map the whole portfolio. Add workplace plans, IRAs, taxable accounts and cash. Determine your total stock, bond and other-asset exposures so the S&P 500 fund is not mistaken for complete diversification.
  3. Test a further decline. Consider whether a substantially lower balance would cause you to sell or stop investing. If the answer is yes, a less aggressive target may be more durable than an optimistic allocation you cannot hold.
  4. Protect liquidity. Check emergency savings, high-interest debt, taxes and upcoming spending before committing more money to stocks.
  5. Inspect the actual fund. Confirm the expense ratio, transaction or account fees, index tracked, replication method, tracking difference, distributions and principal risks in the current prospectus and latest shareholder report. The SEC notes that fees and expenses reduce returns; its index-fund bulletin explains what to review.
  6. Set a written rule. Document the contribution amount, target allocation and the conditions that would trigger a review, such as a job loss or a changed goal—not a particular prediction about next month’s market.

If you already stopped investing

First identify why you stopped. If cash flow, emergency reserves or the goal changed, address that underlying issue. If the pause was solely an attempt to avoid further losses, recognize that restarting still requires a market-timing choice: you must decide when prices are “safe” again, even though the recovery may begin before the news feels reassuring.

Review your target allocation and contribution affordability using the checklist above. Then choose a rule you can follow consistently, such as resuming the previous automatic amount or setting a new amount that fits your revised budget. Avoid treating a single day’s price move as evidence that the decision is correct.

Common mistakes during a downturn

  • Calling the fund “safe” because it tracks an index. Indexing changes how the portfolio is managed; it does not remove stock-market risk.
  • Assuming a lower price means a bargain. A decline says what has happened, not how far prices can fall or when they will recover.
  • Using one fund as an entire retirement plan. Large-cap U.S. stocks may leave gaps in bonds, international stocks, cash and other exposures needed for your allocation.
  • Confusing an average with a timetable. The 282-day historical average is not a countdown clock.
  • Ignoring fees and tracking. Two funds following similar indexes can produce different net results because of expenses, trading and tracking error.
  • Making an emotional switch without a re-entry rule. Selling or pausing can feel relieving, but an undefined restart point often becomes an indefinite cash position.

Bottom line for the decision

If your long-term objective, financial capacity and target allocation remain intact, maintaining your established S&P 500 contribution plan avoids turning a market decline into a prediction exercise. Change or pause it when a concrete change in liquidity, goals, time horizon, risk capacity or diversification makes the old plan unsuitable. In either case, evaluate the whole portfolio and the specific fund; no historical average can tell you when this bear market will end.
