There is no universal winner. Delaying retirement, working part-time, and delaying Social Security are separate decisions. A later full-time or part-time job can add take-home savings, replace low-earning years in your Social Security record, preserve health coverage, and permit more retirement-plan contributions. Delaying a Social Security claim can increase the monthly check, but it also means giving up checks during the waiting period. The right choice depends on your benefit estimates, after-tax cash flow, plan eligibility, health and caregiving needs, debt, taxes, and how much you value your time.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) puts the distinction plainly: “Your retirement age is the age you begin receiving Social Security retirement benefits. For many people, this is not the same age they’ll stop working.” (SSA)

Start with three decisions, not one
Before comparing “retire” with “work part-time,” write down three independent choices:
- When to stop a job: You might leave full-time work, switch to part-time, or continue full-time.
- When to claim Social Security: You can claim while working, claim after stopping, or delay a claim to as late as age 70.
- What to do with additional earnings: Extra wages may fund spending, pay debt, build cash reserves, or increase workplace-plan and IRA contributions.
Combining these choices creates several valid paths: full-time work with delayed Social Security, part-time work with a delayed claim, part-time work while claiming, or stopping work while delaying the claim. Compare the paths using your own numbers rather than assuming that any one label—“retire” or “keep working”—determines the outcome.

How another year of work can change Social Security
The 35-year earnings formula
SSA bases a worker’s retirement benefit on the highest 35 years of earnings and the age at which benefits begin. If your earnings record has fewer than 35 years, years with no earnings are included. A new year with higher earnings may replace a lower year in the calculation; a new year with earnings will not necessarily change the benefit if it does not displace one of the highest 35 years. SSA’s explanation of working and applying describes these interactions (SSA).
That means an extra work year can have two different effects: it may add wages you can save now, and it may increase the eventual benefit by improving the earnings record. The second effect is not guaranteed. Obtain an updated estimate from your my Social Security account or SSA before treating a projected increase as part of your plan.
Claiming before or after full retirement age
Claiming before full retirement age permanently reduces the initial retirement benefit for the months claimed early. Delaying after full retirement age earns delayed-retirement credits until age 70. For people born in 1943 or later, SSA lists a credit rate of 8% per year; the full rate table varies by birth year (SSA). There is no additional delayed-credit increase for postponing past age 70.
An 8% annual credit is a change to the monthly benefit, not an 8% return on a personal investment account. The value of delaying also depends on how many checks you forgo, taxes, inflation, survivor-benefit considerations, and how long benefits are received. Official rules do not establish one claiming age or one break-even age as best for everyone.

Working while claiming: the earnings test
You may work and receive retirement benefits at the same time, but earnings can temporarily reduce payments before full retirement age. For 2026, SSA lists these annual limits:
| Situation in 2026 | Annual earnings limit | How the rule applies |
|---|---|---|
| Under full retirement age for all of 2026 | $24,480 | Benefits can be withheld when earnings exceed the limit. |
| Reaching full retirement age during 2026 | $65,160, counting earnings before the month full retirement age is reached | A higher limit applies only to earnings before the full-retirement-age month. |
| Starting with the month full retirement age is reached | Earnings do not reduce benefits | SSA recalculates the benefit for months in which checks were withheld. |
These are 2026 figures and can change. Check SSA’s current limits before making a work or claiming decision (SSA). Withholding is not the same as losing eligibility forever: SSA says it adjusts the benefit at full retirement age for months withheld.
The first year can require a monthly calculation
When you claim after working part of a year, a special monthly rule can determine which months are payable. Annual earnings alone may not tell you whether a particular month qualifies. SSA publishes monthly thresholds and examples on its working-and-benefits page; use that guidance if your work or claim starts or stops mid-year instead of dividing annual income by 12.

For tax year 2026, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) lists a $24,500 employee elective-deferral limit for most 401(k) plans. Participants age 50 and older may contribute an additional $8,000 catch-up amount when the plan permits it. For ages 60–63, the higher catch-up limit is $11,250. These are legal ceilings, not targets, and your plan may impose lower practical limits or exclude part-time workers. See the IRS contribution-limit guidance.
IRAs and taxable compensation
For 2026, the IRA contribution limit is $7,500, with a $1,100 age-50-and-over catch-up. An individual contribution generally requires taxable compensation; spousal IRA rules and income, deduction, and Roth-eligibility limits can change the result. Traditional IRAs have no age ceiling for contributions, but compensation and eligibility rules still apply. Confirm the applicable limits and your eligibility in IRS’s 2026 announcement and Topic No. 451.
Contribute only after estimating the amount you can actually save. Gross wages are not savings: subtract federal, state, and local taxes, payroll taxes, commuting, meals, clothing, equipment, and any lost benefits. A job that adds $10,000 of wages might produce far less than $10,000 available for retirement.

When delaying retirement may be attractive
You need more accumulation time
Continuing full-time work generally gives you the largest opportunity to save from wages, repay expensive debt, build an emergency reserve, and receive employer benefits. It can be particularly useful when your current portfolio cannot support planned spending without early withdrawals.
You have missing or low-earning years
If your earnings record contains zeros or unusually low years, another higher-earning year has a better chance of replacing one of them. Verify this in your SSA earnings record; do not assume every additional year changes the benefit.
Health coverage is valuable
Employer coverage can be worth more than the wage difference, especially before Medicare eligibility or when a spouse depends on the plan. Compare employee premiums, deductibles, out-of-pocket limits, and the cost of replacing coverage after leaving.

The job preserves useful benefits
Some employers offer retirement-plan access or health coverage only above a stated hours threshold. Confirm the threshold in writing; reducing hours can also reduce pension accruals, paid leave, or eligibility for other benefits.
You can separate work from claiming
You may work part-time and delay Social Security, or claim while working and accept the earnings-test rules. Keeping the decisions separate lets you use part-time wages for current expenses while postponing a larger monthly benefit, if that combination fits your cash needs and health outlook.
When claiming while working can create a poor fit
Claiming early while earning above the applicable limit can result in months with withheld benefits. If you do not need the checks, claiming early can also lock in a lower base benefit than waiting would have produced. Conversely, someone who needs income, has shorter expected longevity, or cannot continue working may rationally claim earlier. The decision requires your estimates, not a slogan such as “always delay.”
A practical comparison process
- List candidate dates. Include stopping full-time work, moving to part-time, and claiming Social Security at each age you are considering.
- Download benefit estimates. Record the estimated monthly benefit at each claiming age and check your reported earnings for missing years.
- Calculate net work cash. Start with expected wages, then subtract taxes, payroll deductions, commuting, meals, insurance premiums, and other incremental costs.
- Document plan rules. Record 401(k) eligibility, match, vesting, catch-up availability, IRA compensation eligibility, and pension effects.
- Price health coverage. Compare the employee plan with the cost and coverage of alternatives for every candidate date.
- Model benefit timing. Show annual cash flows, including any foregone Social Security checks during a delay and the higher check afterward.
- Run several scenarios. Vary longevity, investment returns, inflation, taxes, and unexpected spending. A range is more useful than one alleged break-even age.
- Review nonfinancial constraints. Include physical capacity, caregiving, job security, schedule control, and the value you place on time away from work.
- Recheck annually. SSA earnings-test limits, IRS contribution limits, employer rules, and your health or family situation can change.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating full retirement age as a stop-work age: They answer different questions.
- Assuming every extra year raises Social Security: It matters only if the added earnings improve the highest-35 calculation or if you delay claiming.
- Counting gross pay as savings: Work-related costs and taxes can consume a substantial share.
- Ignoring the earnings test: Use the correct 2026 limit and the special first-year monthly rule when applicable.
- Assuming a part-time plan is automatic: Eligibility, match, and vesting are employer-specific.
- Using contribution limits as goals: The $24,500 401(k) and $7,500 IRA limits are maximums for 2026, not recommended deposits.
- Picking a universal break-even age: Longevity, taxes, investment returns, marital status, survivor needs, and spending patterns change the result.
- Overlooking taxes: Additional wages can affect taxable income, taxation of Social Security, Medicare-related costs, and other program eligibility.
Bottom line: choose the combination that solves your actual constraint
Delay retirement when additional earnings, benefits, and savings materially strengthen a plan you can still live with. Choose part-time work when a smaller schedule produces meaningful net cash or benefits while protecting your health and time. Delay Social Security separately when a higher future monthly benefit is worth the checks you give up and the uncertainty you accept. Use SSA estimates, your employer’s plan documents, and tax-specific advice for the numbers; the official rules do not produce a personalized verdict by themselves.
