Should You Claim Social Security Now or Wait While You Keep Working?

Yes, you can claim Social Security retirement benefits while continuing to work. The better start date depends on your full retirement age (FRA), estimated benefit at different ages, earnings, need for current cash, and personal factors such as health, longevity expectations, household income and survivor planning. Claiming before FRA can trigger the annual earnings test, while waiting after FRA increases your monthly benefit through age 70.

Use your own estimates from the Social Security Administration (SSA), apply the earnings rules for the year you claim, and compare cash received now with the larger monthly amount available later. No general rule makes claiming immediately or delaying optimal for every worker.

What changes when you claim while still working?

Working and claiming are compatible. SSA states, “You can get Social Security retirement benefits and work at the same time.” The practical consequences depend mainly on whether you are below FRA, in the calendar year you reach FRA, or already at or beyond FRA.

Choice Cash-flow effect Earnings-test exposure Monthly benefit effect Work-record effect
Claim before FRA Checks begin sooner Annual test can withhold part of the benefit Starting early permanently produces a lower base amount than waiting to FRA, under SSA claiming rules Future earnings may replace low or zero years in the calculation
Claim in the month you reach FRA Checks begin later than an early claim From the FRA month, earnings no longer reduce retirement benefits Receives the FRA amount rather than an early-claim reduction Additional work can still replace lower years in the highest-35 record
Delay after FRA, up to age 70 No retirement checks during the delay unless another benefit applies No earnings-test reduction after FRA Delayed retirement credits raise the monthly amount through age 70; delaying beyond 70 adds no further increase Additional earnings can still improve the highest-35 calculation

If you are already at FRA, the pre-FRA earnings test is no longer the issue. The decision becomes whether the larger future payment from delaying is worth giving up checks during the waiting period.

How the 2026 earnings test works before full retirement age

The earnings test applies to wages and net earnings from self-employment when you receive retirement benefits before FRA. The limits and formulas below are for calendar year 2026 and come from SSA guidance dated January 2, 2026. They are year-specific and should be checked again for a later claiming year.

Your FRA status in 2026 Earnings limit Withholding formula What earnings count
Below FRA for the entire year $24,480 SSA withholds $1 in benefits for every $2 earned above the limit Wages and net self-employment earnings
Reach FRA during 2026 $65,160, counting earnings before the month you reach FRA SSA withholds $1 in benefits for every $3 above the limit, through the month before FRA Wages and net self-employment earnings before the FRA month
FRA month and later No earnings-test limit No reduction based on how much you earn Retirement benefits are not reduced for earnings starting with the FRA month

Income SSA counts

  • Employee wages, including salary and hourly pay.
  • Bonuses, commissions and vacation pay.
  • Net earnings from self-employment.

Income the test excludes

SSA does not count pensions, annuities, investment income, interest, veterans benefits, or other government or military retirement benefits for this test. The exclusion does not mean those income sources are irrelevant to your household budget; they simply are not earnings-test wages under the cited SSA rules.

What withholding means for your later benefit

Withholding is not necessarily the final calculation of your retirement amount. At FRA, SSA recalculates the ongoing benefit to account for months in which checks were reduced or withheld because of excess earnings. That later adjustment does not provide the same cash flow as receiving the checks on schedule, so include the timing of withheld payments in your budget.

If you stop work partway through a year

SSA has a special rule for some people who start benefits midyear. A full check may be payable for a whole month treated as a month of retirement even when total annual earnings exceed the standard annual limit. The rule uses monthly earnings criteria and depends on the work arrangement, so ask SSA to test your specific retirement month rather than assuming the annual figure decides the result.

Why claiming age changes the monthly amount

Starting before FRA

Beginning retirement benefits before FRA reduces the monthly retirement amount under SSA’s claiming formula. The exact reduction depends on your birth date, FRA and claiming month. Use your personalized SSA estimate rather than applying a generic percentage from another person’s record.

Starting at FRA

FRA is based on your birth date. At FRA, the earnings test stops reducing retirement benefits, and you receive the amount associated with claiming at that age under your record.

Delaying after FRA

Delayed retirement credits accrue for eligible months after FRA when you are not receiving an old-age benefit, through age 70. The cited regulation also recognizes eligible months involving voluntary suspension in applicable cases. Once you reach 70, delaying longer does not increase the retirement amount further.

How continued work can raise the underlying benefit

SSA calculates retirement benefits using your highest 35 years of earnings. A new year of work can replace a lower year, or a zero year if you have fewer than 35 years of covered earnings. The size of any increase is specific to your earnings record: a high new year may replace a low year, while a new year that is lower than the 35 already counted may not change the calculation.

When another year is most likely to help

  • You have fewer than 35 years of covered earnings and therefore a zero year is included.
  • Your current pay is substantially higher than one of the 35 years now being used.
  • You expect several additional high-earning years rather than a single modest year.

When working longer may not change the formula

If the new year is below every year already in your highest-35 record, it may not replace anything. Even then, working can provide wages that reduce the amount you need to draw from savings while you delay benefits; that is a cash-flow consideration, not a guaranteed increase in the SSA calculation.

A practical comparison for your own situation

Make the comparison with the same assumptions for each possible start date. The following sequence separates the rules from the personal judgment about when you need income.

  1. Determine your FRA. Use SSA’s retirement age calculator because the answer is birth-date dependent.
  2. Record benefit estimates at several start ages. Compare the amount at your intended claim month, at FRA and at age 70. Keep the estimates tied to the same earnings assumptions.
  3. List expected earnings by year and, if relevant, by month. Include wages, bonuses, commissions, vacation pay and net self-employment earnings. Remove pensions, investment income and other categories that do not count in the earnings test.
  4. Apply the correct 2026 test or the rule for your later year. If you are under FRA all year, compare earnings with $24,480 and the $1-for-$2 formula. If you reach FRA in 2026, use $65,160 for earnings before the FRA month and the $1-for-$3 formula. From the FRA month, do not reduce benefits for earnings.
  5. Check whether a midyear retirement rule could apply. If you stop work during the year, ask SSA about the monthly test rather than relying only on annual earnings.
  6. Evaluate the 35-year record. Identify the lowest or zero years in your earnings history and estimate whether continuing work could replace them.
  7. Compare cash needs with the later payment. Note how many months of checks you would forgo by delaying and whether wages, savings or other income can cover essential expenses during that period.
  8. Review circumstances outside the basic formula. Include household income, family and survivor-benefit objectives, health and longevity expectations, work outside the United States, and Medicare timing.
  9. Recheck the figures when you are ready to file. Earnings limits are annual figures, and SSA rules and calculators should be refreshed for the claiming year.

Situations that need separate attention

Working outside the United States

SSA says work outside the United States has different work-test rules. Do not apply the domestic wage calculation automatically if your job or self-employment is performed abroad; ask SSA how your location and work pattern are treated.

Medicare at age 65

If you are not receiving Social Security at 65, you may need to apply for Medicare separately. Employer coverage can affect when Part B enrollment is appropriate. A decision to delay Social Security should therefore include a separate Medicare enrollment check so that postponing the retirement check does not cause an unintended coverage problem.

Family and survivor considerations

General claiming rules cannot determine the best household strategy without information about a spouse, dependents, survivor objectives and other benefits. A higher worker benefit may affect the income available to a surviving spouse, while an early claim may provide needed household cash. Treat these as individualized planning questions rather than conclusions from the earnings test alone.

Self-employment and irregular pay

Net self-employment earnings count, and bonuses, commissions and vacation pay can count as wages. If income arrives unevenly, organize it by the periods SSA uses and ask how a midyear work stop is treated before selecting a start month.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming work automatically prevents a claim. You may work and receive retirement benefits at the same time.
  • Using an old earnings limit. The $24,480 and $65,160 figures apply to 2026; a later year can have different limits.
  • Applying the full-year limit in your FRA year. In 2026, the $65,160 limit covers earnings before the FRA month, with the $1-for-$3 formula through the month before FRA.
  • Counting investment income as wages. Interest, investments, pensions and annuities are excluded from this earnings test.
  • Treating withheld checks as permanently lost. SSA recalculates the ongoing benefit at FRA for months affected by excess earnings, but the adjustment does not replace the earlier cash flow.
  • Assuming every extra work year raises benefits. It helps only if the new earnings replace a lower or zero year in the highest-35 record.
  • Delaying indefinitely. Delayed credits stop increasing the retirement amount at age 70.
  • Ignoring Medicare or overseas work rules. Those situations require separate SSA guidance.

Where to get the numbers before filing

Start with SSA’s retirement age calculator, earnings test calculator and your personal benefit estimates. Confirm your recorded earnings, FRA, projected amount at each candidate start age and the earnings SSA expects to count. Then ask SSA to explain any withholding estimate, midyear retirement exception or work-outside-the-U.S. rule that applies to you. The official pages cited here are SSA guidance dated January 2, 2026; refresh the limits and calculator results for the year you actually claim.
