Should You Claim Social Security Early or Wait for a Larger Monthly Benefit?

There is no universally best claiming age. Starting Social Security at 62 provides income sooner but permanently lowers the monthly retirement benefit compared with claiming at full retirement age (FRA). Waiting after FRA increases the monthly amount through delayed retirement credits, up to age 70. The right choice depends on your personalized SSA estimates, cash needs, work plans, health and longevity expectations, and family circumstances.

Compare your estimated benefit at every plausible age from 62 through 70, then test whether your savings and other income can support waiting. Treat Medicare enrollment, the earnings test, taxes, and spousal or survivor effects as separate parts of the decision—not reasons to rely on a generic “break-even age.”

What changes when you claim at 62, at full retirement age, or at 70?

Social Security retirement benefits can begin as early as age 62. Your FRA depends on your birth year. For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67. Claiming at 62 for that group can reduce the FRA benefit by as much as 30%; the exact reduction depends on the birth year and the month benefits start.

Claiming at FRA avoids the early-claiming reduction. Delaying after FRA earns delayed retirement credits until age 70. For people born in 1943 or later, the Social Security Administration (SSA) describes those credits as 8% per year. There is no further increase for delaying beyond 70.

Claiming point Effect on monthly benefit What to evaluate
Age 62 Permanent reduction based on months before FRA; up to 30% below the FRA amount when FRA is 67 Immediate cash flow, ability to work, savings, and the cost of receiving a smaller check for life
Full retirement age 100% of your primary insurance amount, before any other adjustments Whether waiting from 62 is affordable and whether continued work can improve your earnings record
After FRA through 70 Delayed retirement credits increase the monthly amount; 8% annually for people born in 1943 or later Funding the delay, longevity expectations, household needs, and the value of a larger protected income stream
After age 70 No additional delayed-retirement increase Claiming by 70 rather than postponing solely for a higher Social Security amount

The larger check from waiting is only one side of the trade-off. Delaying also means giving up payments you could have received earlier. How long you live, what those forgone payments would have funded, and how your household uses Social Security all affect the result. The SSA has not established one break-even age that applies to everyone.

How SSA calculates early reductions and delayed credits

Early-claiming formula

SSA reduces a retirement benefit according to the number of months between the start date and FRA. Its 2025 Annual Statistical Supplement describes a reduction of 5/9 of 1% for each of the first 36 months claimed early, followed by 5/12 of 1% for each additional month. Those factors produce different percentages for different birth cohorts and claiming months, so an age-only rule is an approximation.

For someone whose FRA is 67, claiming at 62 is 60 months early and can result in a reduction of up to 30%. Claiming at 64, 65, or 66 produces smaller reductions than claiming at 62, but each is still a permanent adjustment to the monthly amount. Use the start month shown in your SSA estimate rather than applying a rounded percentage yourself.

Delayed-retirement formula

Delayed credits begin after FRA and stop at age 70. For people born in 1943 or later, SSA lists credits equal to 8% per year, or 16/24 of 1% for each month of delay. The credit is applied to the benefit you would have received at FRA; it does not continue increasing after 70.

These are formulas, not dollar predictions. Your actual amount also reflects your earnings record and the claiming month. The practical comparison is therefore your own SSA estimate at each age, not a generic percentage applied to an assumed benefit.

Build a decision using your actual SSA estimates

SSA says the choice of when to start affects your monthly benefit for the rest of your life. A disciplined comparison prevents a slogan such as “always wait” or “take it as soon as possible” from replacing your facts.

  1. Check your earnings record. Review the wages shown in your SSA record and correct errors before relying on an estimate. The retirement calculation uses your highest 35 years of earnings.
  2. Record estimates from 62 through 70. For each plausible start age and month, save the projected monthly amount and the date payments would begin. Include an FRA estimate and an age-70 estimate.
  3. Map your cash needs. List essential expenses, health costs, debt payments, emergency reserves, pensions, employment income, and withdrawals from savings. Identify whether you can fund a delay without taking risks that threaten basic spending.
  4. Compare cumulative cash flow. For each start age, compare the payments received before another option begins with the larger checks that follow. Use your own assumptions about investment returns, inflation, and taxes; do not treat a single calculated crossover as a universal answer.
  5. Test work scenarios. Model stopping work, reducing hours, and continuing to earn. Additional earnings may replace a low or zero year in the 35-year record, raising the eventual benefit.
  6. Check household effects. Review spouse, family, and survivor implications using both partners’ dates, earnings records, marital history, and eligibility details.
  7. Separate Medicare planning. Decide how health coverage and Part B enrollment will work at 65 independently of the Social Security start date.

Health and longevity expectations are planning inputs, not predictions. A person who expects a long retirement may place more value on the larger inflation-adjusted monthly income produced by waiting. Someone with urgent income needs, limited savings, or serious health concerns may value earlier payments more. Neither factor determines the answer by itself.

Working while receiving Social Security

The earnings test before FRA

You may work and receive retirement benefits, but before FRA the earnings test can cause temporary withholding. For 2026, SSA lists an annual limit of $24,480 for a beneficiary who is under FRA for the entire year. In the calendar year you reach FRA, the limit is $65,160, and it applies only to earnings received before the month you reach FRA. Beginning with FRA, there is no earnings limit.

The limits are year-specific. Check the current SSA figures when you make a decision rather than carrying the 2026 amounts into a later year.

What earnings count

SSA counts wages and net earnings from self-employment for this test. It does not count pensions, annuities, investment income, interest, veterans benefits, or other government or military retirement benefits. If you have multiple income sources, separate the amounts that fall under the test from those that do not.

Withholding is not the same as a permanent loss

When benefits are withheld because earnings exceed the limit, SSA says it recalculates the benefit after FRA to account for months in which payments were withheld. That adjustment is distinct from the potential benefit increase created by adding new earnings to your highest-35-year record. Ask SSA how both adjustments apply to your record and keep wage documentation.

Your 35-year earnings record can change the answer

SSA calculates a retirement benefit from your highest 35 years of earnings. If you have fewer than 35 years, years with no earnings can enter the calculation and lower the average. Continuing to work can replace a zero or low year with a higher year, potentially increasing the underlying benefit.

This creates two separate reasons a later claim might show a larger amount: delayed-retirement credits and a stronger earnings record. Conversely, stopping work does not automatically mean you should claim immediately; it means you should inspect how the missing years affect your estimate and whether savings can bridge the gap.

Medicare timing is separate from claiming Social Security

Do not delay or accelerate Medicare enrollment solely because you changed your Social Security start date. If you are receiving Social Security before age 65, SSA says you are automatically enrolled in Original Medicare Parts A and B at 65. If you are not receiving Social Security at 65, you generally need to apply for Medicare three months before your 65th birthday.

Employer group coverage can change when Part B enrollment is appropriate. Ask your personnel or benefits office how your active employer coverage coordinates with Medicare and whether a Special Enrollment Period will apply after employment coverage ends. A decision to postpone Social Security does not, by itself, postpone Medicare deadlines.

Spousal, family, and survivor considerations

A single person’s estimate cannot answer a couple’s claiming question. SSA’s filing rules address deemed filing and interactions between retirement and spousal benefits, while its planning guidance identifies family benefits as a factor. The result depends on both people’s birth dates, earnings records, marriage history, current marital status, and eligibility.

Before choosing a start date, list the benefits that could be paid to each household member and identify whose record supports each one. Consider how the surviving spouse’s income would look after the first death, but do not assume that one universal “maximize the survivor benefit” strategy applies. Obtain an SSA estimate for each relevant filing sequence or consult a qualified adviser with the complete records.

Taxes and other cash-flow effects

SSA notes that federal income tax may apply to Social Security benefits. The tax result depends on your overall income and filing situation, so a larger monthly benefit can affect taxes differently from an earlier, smaller benefit. Include estimated federal taxes in your cash-flow comparison and verify the result with current IRS guidance or a tax professional.

Also account for health premiums, required withdrawals from retirement accounts, debt costs, and the opportunity cost of using savings to finance a delay. These items can matter more to your budget than the nominal difference between two claiming ages.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using age 62, FRA, or 70 as a universal rule. Those are decision points, not recommendations.
  • Applying the 30% figure to everyone. It describes the maximum reduction for people whose FRA is 67; other birth cohorts and start months differ.
  • Assuming delayed credits continue after 70. SSA says they stop increasing at age 70.
  • Ignoring the calendar year of work. The 2026 earnings-test limits do not automatically apply in later years.
  • Treating withheld checks as simply lost. SSA accounts for withheld months in a later recalculation after FRA.
  • Stopping work without checking the 35-year record. A new year of earnings can replace a zero or low year.
  • Delaying Medicare along with Social Security. The enrollment timetable at 65 is separate.
  • Making a spouse or survivor decision from one person’s estimate. Household records and eligibility rules are required.

When early claiming may fit—and when waiting may fit

Early claiming may fit when

  • You need dependable income to cover essential expenses and cannot safely fund a delay from work or savings.
  • Your health circumstances or personal longevity expectations make earlier cash flow especially valuable to you.
  • Continuing to work would trigger the earnings test and your budget requires benefits despite possible withholding.
  • Your household analysis shows that an earlier start better meets immediate family needs.

Waiting may fit when

  • You can cover expenses without Social Security until FRA or 70.
  • You place a high value on a larger monthly benefit for a potentially long retirement.
  • Additional work can improve a less-than-35-year or low-earnings record.
  • Your household plan supports delaying on the record that matters most to future income, after reviewing spouse and survivor effects.

These are decision patterns, not prescriptions. The same health, work, or family fact can point in different directions depending on savings, taxes, and the actual SSA estimates.

A practical final check before filing

  1. Confirm your birth year, FRA, and preferred claiming month.
  2. Verify your earnings record and investigate any missing or incorrect year.
  3. Save personalized estimates for ages 62 through 70.
  4. Write a month-by-month budget for the period before benefits begin.
  5. Apply the correct year’s earnings-test rule if you will work before FRA.
  6. Set a Medicare enrollment reminder for three months before 65 if you are not already receiving Social Security.
  7. Review spouse, family, and survivor eligibility using both household records.
  8. Estimate taxes and decide whether you need advice from a tax or retirement professional.
  9. File only after the chosen start date still works under a conservative income and expense scenario.

The strongest answer to “Should you claim early or wait?” is the one that survives this personalized check. Early filing buys time and cash flow at a lower permanent monthly amount; waiting buys a larger amount later, with credits ending at 70. Your SSA record, resources, work, health expectations, and household responsibilities determine which trade-off is sustainable.
