For most investors who do not need cash from the fund now, the growth option is the simpler default to investigate: earnings stay invested and are reflected in the fund’s NAV. A payout option can suit an investor who has a genuine cash-flow need and accepts that distributions are discretionary, variable and not guaranteed.
A payout is not an additional return on top of the fund’s value. When a distribution is declared, the NAV generally falls by the distributed amount, subject to the scheme’s mechanics and applicable charges or taxes. The right choice depends on cash-flow needs, tax jurisdiction, fund type, holding period and the cost of changing options.

What growth and payout options actually mean
Growth option
Under a growth option, the fund keeps its income and realized gains invested in the portfolio. The value is reflected in the NAV (net asset value) of each unit. Your unit count does not automatically increase just because the portfolio has earned a profit; instead, the NAV can rise or fall with the value of the underlying holdings, expenses and market conditions.

You normally receive money only when you redeem units, rather than whenever the fund declares a distribution. It does not promise a higher return than a payout option. Both options are exposed to the same scheme performance and market risk when they invest in the same underlying portfolio, and expenses and option-specific terms still need to be checked in the scheme documents.

Payout option
A payout option distributes cash when the fund declares a distribution from an available distributable surplus. The fund decides whether to declare one, how much to distribute and how often. A payout schedule should not be treated as a guaranteed salary, pension or interest payment unless the current scheme documents explicitly support that expectation—and even then, distributions can vary.
Indian scheme documents commonly call this structure “Income Distribution cum Capital Withdrawal” (IDCW). Older material and some investor conversations may still use “dividend.” The terminology does not change the central mechanics: the distribution is taken from the scheme’s value and paid to investors who hold units on the relevant record date.
Reinvestment is a third choice
With a reinvestment option, a declared distribution is used to buy additional units. Your unit count rises, but the NAV is adjusted for the distribution before those units are purchased. Reinvestment is not identical to growth: the distribution is still declared, and tax rules can treat it as a taxable distribution even though you did not receive cash in your bank account.

|---|---|---|---|
| What happens to declared earnings | Retained in the scheme and reflected in NAV | Paid to the investor when declared | Used to purchase additional units after declaration |
| Is a distribution required? | No separate distribution is made | No; amount and timing are discretionary | No; additional units arise only after a declared distribution |
| Does unit count automatically rise from portfolio gains? | No | No | Yes, but only when a distribution is reinvested |
| Can tax arise when a distribution is declared? | Usually the tax event is associated with redemption or another disposal, subject to local law | Potentially, depending on jurisdiction and account type | Potentially, because reinvestment does not erase the distribution event |
Why the NAV falls after a payout
Suppose a hypothetical fund has a NAV of ₹50 immediately before declaring ₹5 per unit. After the distribution, the NAV is expected to be about ₹45 before considering market movement, expenses or other adjustments. An investor holding 100 units would have approximately ₹4,500 in units plus ₹500 of cash, rather than ₹5,000 of units alone. The investor’s total position has not gained an extra ₹500 merely because the fund paid it out.

Actual accounting can include applicable charges, rounding, taxes and market movement, so the post-distribution NAV will not always equal a simple subtraction. The practical test is to compare the value of your remaining units plus cash received—not just the lower NAV shown after the distribution.
In a growth option, the same ₹5 of value remains inside the scheme, so there is no corresponding payout-date reduction caused by a distribution. The NAV continues to reflect the portfolio’s value, net of expenses and market changes.
When growth is usually the better starting point
You are building wealth
If the objective is retirement accumulation, a future home purchase, education funding or another long-term goal, retaining earnings avoids creating a cash flow that you may not need. Money that remains invested can continue to participate in future market gains or losses.

You do not want to manage distributions
Growth avoids decisions about whether to spend, reinvest or redeploy each payout. It also avoids the possibility that a distribution arrives when your chosen asset allocation is already out of balance.

You want withdrawals under your control
With growth, you can decide when and how many units to redeem, subject to the scheme’s rules, market value, exit-load provisions and tax law. That control can be more useful than an unpredictable distribution. A planned redemption is not automatically superior; compare its tax treatment, transaction costs and effect on your remaining units with the payout option.
Growth is not a guarantee of better performance. If the fund’s portfolio falls, the NAV can fall as well. The option changes how value is distributed, not the underlying market risk.
When a payout option can make sense
You have a genuine need for cash
A payout can be convenient for an investor who needs periodic cash and does not want to submit redemption orders. This might include a planned spending need or a requirement to receive declared cash from an investment account.
You accept irregular income
The fund may have distributable surplus in one period and not in another. The amount can change, and the fund can choose not to declare a distribution. Do not select a payout option on the assumption of a fixed monthly amount unless the current scheme documents establish a feature that actually provides one.

You understand the effect on your invested capital
Because the NAV is adjusted when a distribution is paid, a payout can include an element of capital withdrawal under the scheme’s mechanics. Evaluate the cash received and the value left invested together.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How taxes change the comparison
Tax treatment depends on your country, residence, fund classification, account type, acquisition and redemption dates, holding period and individual tax status. A distribution and a redemption can be different tax events. The option label alone is not enough to predict your after-tax result.
India: current FY 2025–26 context
For Indian investors, AMFI’s FY 2025–26 tax guidance lists IDCW income for resident investors at the applicable slab rate. It separately lists capital gains on equity-oriented mutual-fund units according to the holding period and statutory conditions.

|---|---|---|
| Resident investor IDCW income | Taxed at the investor’s applicable slab rate | Individual tax status, surcharge and cess can affect the final liability |
| Equity-oriented fund short-term capital gain | 20% for units held up to 12 months | Applies subject to statutory conditions and the fund meeting the relevant equity-oriented classification |
| Equity-oriented fund long-term capital gain | 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh for units held more than 12 months | The threshold, classification, surcharge, cess and other legal conditions must be verified for the transaction |
These figures are date-sensitive tax guidance, not investment-performance statistics or personal tax advice. Do not apply the equity-oriented-fund rates to debt, international, gold or other categories without checking the rules that apply to that category. AMFI’s materials also describe a changed definition of specified mutual funds from FY 2025–26, illustrating why classification and transaction dates matter.

Before acting, verify the current Income Tax Department rules and the scheme’s tax documents, or ask a qualified tax professional to assess your facts. A distribution can create tax even when you reinvest it, while a redemption generally creates a capital-gains calculation based on the units sold and their holding period.
Outside India
Other jurisdictions use different labels and rules. U.S. Investor.gov explains that fund distributions may be paid in cash or reinvested and can have tax consequences in taxable accounts. That U.S. explanation should not be applied to an Indian investor, and Indian rules should not be applied to an investor elsewhere. Use the tax authority and fund documents for your country.
Check the scheme before choosing an option
The same broad scheme may offer growth and payout variants, but do not assume every term is identical. Confirm the current documents for the exact plan, especially where plans have separate expense ratios, loads, minimums or operational rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Identify the underlying portfolio and fund classification.
- Read how and when the scheme may declare a distribution, including record-date and payment mechanics.
- Check whether an exit load applies to redemptions or switches and for how long.
- Compare the option’s expense ratio and any plan-level charges.
- Confirm how distributions, reinvestments and redemptions are reported for tax.
- Check whether the plan is available through your platform and whether changing options requires a new transaction.
Switching from growth to payout—or back
Do not switch casually. AMFI states that switching between growth and dividend plans within the same scheme is subject to capital-gains tax. A switch can be treated as a transfer or redemption for tax purposes, and an exit load may apply under the scheme’s rules.
- Record the units, purchase dates and cost of the existing option.
- Read the scheme’s current switch, redemption and exit-load provisions.
- Estimate the capital gain or loss that the switch could realize under your jurisdiction’s rules.
- Compare the tax and transaction cost with the benefit you expect from changing the cash-flow method.
- Submit the switch only after confirming the destination option, cut-off time and applicable NAV process with the fund or platform.
If your goal is simply to receive cash, compare a planned redemption from growth with a payout option rather than assuming a switch is harmless. The better route depends on the amount needed, timing, tax position and how much control you want over which units are sold.
A practical decision framework
- Define the cash requirement. If you do not need money from the fund now, start by evaluating growth. If you do, quantify the amount and timing rather than choosing a payout based on its label.
- Test the distribution risk. Ask whether you can tolerate an amount that varies or a period with no distribution. If not, the option may not match your spending need.
- Compare total value. Assess expected cash received plus the value of units remaining. Never compare only the pre-payout and post-payout NAV.
- Check tax in context. Use your residence, account type, fund category, holding period and transaction date. A tax result for one investor cannot be generalized to another.
- Price the alternatives. Compare payout with growth plus planned redemptions, including exit loads, taxes and administrative effort.
- Verify the documents. Confirm that the option terms, portfolio, expenses and switching rules are current for the exact scheme and plan.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating a payout as extra return: the NAV adjustment means the cash comes from the scheme’s value.
- Assuming a payout is guaranteed: declaration, amount and frequency are not assured merely because the option is called payout or IDCW.
- Calling reinvestment “the same as growth”: reinvestment increases units after a declared distribution and can still trigger distribution taxation.
- Using equity-fund tax rates for every mutual fund: debt, international, gold and other categories can have different rules.
- Ignoring taxes when switching: changing options within a scheme can realize capital gains and may also attract an exit load.
- Choosing a plan for a promised yield: a historical or advertised distribution does not establish a future amount.
Bottom line for the decision
Investigate growth first when your priority is accumulation and you do not need distributions. Consider payout when receiving declared cash is genuinely useful and you can accept that the amount and timing may vary. Reinvestment is a separate mechanism, not a synonym for growth. In every case, judge the combined value of cash and remaining units, then verify the tax and switching consequences for your country and the exact fund before submitting an order.
