An approaching earnings season is not, by itself, a sound reason to change a long-term 401(k) allocation. Earnings announcements can produce short-term price swings, but they do not tell you whether your retirement mix still fits your time horizon, risk tolerance, financial circumstances and goals.
Consider a change when your intended allocation has drifted or your situation has materially changed. That may mean rebalancing back to a target you still endorse, or choosing a different target because retirement is closer, your ability to tolerate losses has changed, or your goals and finances are different. Your plan’s investment menu, fund documents and fees determine what changes are actually available.

Public companies report results in recurring earnings seasons. The announcements can move individual shares and broad markets in either direction, sometimes quickly. A 401(k), however, is designed to fund a future goal that may be years or decades away. Moving from stocks to cash before a calendar event requires two timing decisions: when to exit and when to re-enter. A missed rebound can damage a long-term result just as a decline can.

The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing warns against changing an allocation simply because an asset category has recently performed well: “But savvy investors typically do not change their asset allocation based on the relative performance of asset categories – for example, increasing the proportion of stocks in one’s portfolio when the stock market is hot.” The same principle applies to trying to avoid a predicted earnings-season reaction. A headline or calendar date is not a substitute for an allocation decision grounded in your circumstances.
Short-term stock volatility is a risk to recognize, not a strategy for a retirement account. The SEC describes stocks as very risky over short periods while noting that a longer time horizon can make temporary losses more tolerable. Your contribution schedule, diversification and years until withdrawals matter more than whether companies are about to report quarterly numbers.
Start with the allocation you actually need
Before changing a fund or contribution percentage, identify the mix of stocks, bonds, cash and other investments that is appropriate for you. The SEC says allocation depends largely on two personal factors: your time horizon and your ability and willingness to take risk. Goals and financial circumstances add essential context.

Estimate when you will need to use the money, not merely when you expect to stop working. Someone decades from withdrawals generally has more time to recover from market declines than someone who will begin taking distributions soon. A shorter horizon can make a large allocation to volatile investments harder to live with because there is less time for recovery. If your retirement date moved forward, that is a personal planning change worth reviewing; an earnings calendar is not.
Ability to take risk
Ability is your financial capacity to withstand a loss. Stable income, emergency savings, debt obligations, other retirement assets and the flexibility to delay withdrawals all affect it. A participant with little non-retirement liquidity may have less capacity for a sharp decline even if retirement is still years away.

Willingness to take risk
Willingness is your behavioral tolerance. If a market drop would cause you to abandon your plan, an allocation that looks attractive on paper may be too aggressive. The answer is not to react to every announcement; it is to select a mix you can maintain through ordinary volatility.
Goals and changing circumstances
Review whether you still have the same retirement spending goal, expected retirement date, job stability, debt load, family responsibilities and outside investments. A new job, inheritance, major expense, health change or change in a spouse’s retirement resources can alter the role your 401(k) must play. Those facts can justify reassessing the target allocation; they do not require a pre-earnings trade.
Four legitimate choices for your 401(k)
Use the following decision framework instead of treating earnings season as a buy-or-sell signal.
| Choice | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Leave the allocation as is | Your horizon, risk tolerance, goals and financial circumstances remain consistent with the current mix. | Confirm that the portfolio has not drifted materially and that the funds and fees remain acceptable. |
| Rebalance | Market movements have pushed the portfolio away from an intentional target that you still endorse. | Use a preselected calendar or allocation threshold, and review transaction rules, restrictions and tax treatment inside the plan. |
| Change the target mix | Retirement timing, goals, risk capacity, risk tolerance or other circumstances have materially changed. | Document why the new mix is appropriate and examine the complete portfolio, including accounts outside the 401(k). |
| Use a target-date fund or reassess one | You prefer a professionally managed allocation that generally becomes more conservative as a chosen retirement date approaches. | Read the glide path, holdings, fees and the fund’s treatment of assets elsewhere in your retirement savings. |
How rebalancing works
Rebalancing restores a chosen mix; it is different from changing the mix because a market segment recently rose or fell. Suppose your written target is 70% stock funds and 30% bond funds. If stocks rise and the account becomes 78% stocks, selling enough of the overweight holding and directing contributions toward the underweight holding can move the account back toward 70/30. The percentages here are an illustration, not a recommendation for your account.
Choose a rule before markets move
The SEC describes two common approaches:
- Calendar-based: review and, if needed, rebalance on a recurring schedule such as every six or twelve months. Those intervals are examples of review cadence, not a universal prescription or a measured performance advantage.
- Threshold-based: rebalance when an asset class moves a predetermined amount or percentage away from its target, such as a five-percentage-point drift. Select a threshold in advance and apply it consistently.
The SEC says rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently. Checking around every earnings announcement can turn a maintenance task into market timing, increase decision errors and make it harder to follow a coherent plan.

Use the mechanics your plan provides
- Write down the target percentages for the entire retirement portfolio, including accounts that are not in the 401(k), so one account is not judged in isolation.
- Read the plan’s investment instructions to determine whether you can exchange existing balances, change future contribution elections, or do both.
- Compare current percentages with the target and identify which holding is above or below its intended weight.
- Apply your chosen calendar or threshold rule rather than a reaction to an upcoming announcement.
- After submitting the change, verify the confirmation and the effective date. Plan processing cutoffs can determine which price or trading date applies.
Inside a 401(k), exchanges generally do not create the same current capital-gains tax bill as selling in a taxable brokerage account, but plan rules and distributions still matter. Read the summary plan description and investment materials for the terms that apply to you, and consider tax advice if you are coordinating accounts.

When a target-date fund changes the decision
A target-date fund holds a mix of asset classes and typically shifts toward more conservative investments as its stated target year approaches. The SEC and DOL describe this glide-path approach as a long-term strategy, but funds with the same target year can have different stock allocations, bond exposures, “to” or “through” retirement designs, holdings and fees.
Read the fund’s glide path
Find the allocation at the target date and the years after it. A fund may continue changing its mix after the target year, while another may reach its most conservative point at that date. Neither label alone tells you the appropriate choice.
Check holdings and overlap
Review the underlying funds and asset classes. Owning a target-date fund alongside several other stock or bond funds can unintentionally make the total portfolio more aggressive or more conservative than the target-date fund’s design. Include an employer stock position and accounts at other institutions in your assessment.
Compare fees and services
Use the plan’s fee disclosures and the target-date fund prospectus or fact sheet. The relevant cost is the expense ratio and any plan-level charge that applies to your account. A target-date fund may simplify maintenance, but convenience does not remove the need to understand its allocation.

Your 401(k) menu limits your choices
Participants generally select investments from the options their employer’s plan makes available. The SEC’s 401(k) guidance, DOL workplace-plan materials and IRS plan-asset information all point participants back to their own plan documents for the actual menu, procedures and fees.
Before making a change, locate the current investment-performance pages, fee disclosure, summary plan description and any fund fact sheets. Confirm:
- Which stock, bond, stable-value or cash options are open to new contributions and exchanges.
- Whether a fund has a frequent-trading restriction, redemption fee or exchange limit.
- How administrative and investment fees are charged and whether they differ among options.
- When a change becomes effective and whether a payroll contribution election is separate from an existing-balance exchange.
- Whether employer matching contributions have restrictions or are invested under a default election.
Do not assume that a fund with a familiar name is available, low-cost or diversified in your plan. The plan’s current documents control.

- State the purpose. Write whether you are trying to restore a target, respond to a life change, reduce risk as retirement nears, or merely avoid a possible announcement-related decline. The last reason, by itself, does not establish a need to change.
- Record your current total mix. Add the 401(k), individual retirement accounts, taxable investments and significant employer stock. Classify holdings by asset class rather than relying only on fund names.
- Reconfirm your horizon and risk profile. Note the expected first withdrawal date, financial capacity for losses and how you would respond to a substantial decline.
- Set or revisit a written target. Base it on the factors above and your retirement goal. If you cannot explain why the target fits, pause before trading.
- Measure drift. Compare the current percentages with the target. A drift that does not breach your preselected threshold may call for no action.
- Inspect the plan options and costs. Verify that the proposed holdings are available, diversified for their intended role and priced as shown in current disclosures.
- Implement once, then document. Submit only the changes required by your rule, save the confirmation and schedule the next review. Do not add an extra trade because a company reports a surprise result.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Moving everything to cash
Cash can feel safe during uncertainty, but leaving a long-term account out of growth assets can create a different risk: failing to keep pace with a retirement goal. A cash move also creates the unresolved question of when to reinvest. Use cash exposure only when it is part of an intentional allocation, not as an automatic earnings-season shelter.

Chasing the latest winning sector
Recent performance is backward-looking. Switching into the best-performing category after it rises can raise concentration risk and undermine diversification. The SEC specifically distinguishes restoring a chosen allocation from increasing an asset class because it has been hot.
Confusing contribution changes with rebalancing
Changing future payroll percentages affects new money; it may not correct the allocation of your existing balance. An exchange of current holdings may be needed, subject to plan rules. Check both elections separately.
Ignoring outside assets
A 401(k) that appears balanced can make the household portfolio heavily concentrated when an IRA, brokerage account or employer stock is included. Set targets for the overall retirement strategy and then decide which account should hold each role.
Assuming a target-date label guarantees a fit
The target year is not a standardized risk level. Read the glide path, holdings, fees and post-retirement design before relying on the fund as the entire portfolio.
When individualized help is appropriate
Consider a qualified financial or tax professional if you are close to retirement, coordinating several accounts, managing concentrated employer stock, facing a major life change, or unsure how much loss your finances can withstand. Ask how the professional is paid, what services are included and whether the advice covers your whole portfolio rather than one plan menu. A professional can help translate your goals into an allocation, but you still need to verify the 401(k)’s available options and costs.
The central decision is not whether the next earnings season will be calm or volatile. It is whether your current investment mix remains an intentional match for your future withdrawals and your ability to stay invested. If it does, leave it alone and follow your review rule. If it has drifted, rebalance deliberately. If your life or retirement plan changed, reassess the target itself using the information in your plan documents.
