Should You Buy Bitcoin During a Market Sell-Off? Risks and Questions to Consider

Not automatically. A Bitcoin sell-off shows that the market price has fallen; it does not establish that Bitcoin is undervalued or that a rebound is near. The sensible decision depends on whether you can withstand another severe decline, understand the purchase route and custody responsibilities, and fit the risk into your financial plan and time horizon.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) materials discussed here are risk education, not a forecast or personal recommendation. No cited source identifies a market bottom or supplies a suitable allocation for an individual investor.

What a sell-off does—and does not—tell you

A lower price can make an asset look cheaper, but “down” is not the same as “undervalued.” Bitcoin’s price is set by buyers and sellers, and a decline can continue when sentiment, liquidity, leverage, regulation, technology concerns or broader markets remain weak. Buying after an initial drop can therefore expose you to a second, larger decline.

The CFTC says virtual-currency values are “completely derived by market forces of supply and demand” and that they “are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies.” Those statements describe how the market works; they are not a signal that prices will rise or fall next.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Historical ranges illustrate the scale of movement without proving where a bottom is. Riot Platforms, Inc.’s SEC-filed annual report lists these approximate Bitcoin price ranges in its principal market:

Fiscal year ended Approximate reported range What the figure represents
September 30, 2025 $58,900–$124,500 Within-year principal-market range reported by Riot Platforms, Inc.
September 30, 2024 $26,500–$73,800 Within-year principal-market range reported by Riot Platforms, Inc.
September 30, 2023 $15,500–$31,900 Within-year principal-market range reported by Riot Platforms, Inc.

These are annual-report market ranges, not a current quotation, a maximum drawdown calculation, an investor’s realized return or evidence of future direction. They also do not establish the size of any particular sell-off you may be watching.

Questions to answer before buying

Can you tolerate a substantial or total loss?

Only commit money whose loss would not threaten essential spending, debt payments, emergency savings, insurance, taxes or near-term goals. The SEC warns that Bitcoin has historically been highly volatile and could decline drastically. Its investor alert includes an example of a drop exceeding 50% in a single day; that is an illustration in an older alert, not a measurement of current market conditions.

Ask what would happen if your purchase fell sharply immediately after execution. If you would need to sell to pay bills, or if the decline would force a damaging change to your housing, education or retirement plans, the position is not compatible with that money’s job.

What is your time horizon?

A sell-off can last longer than an investor can remain patient. Money needed within months or a few years has less capacity for an asset whose price can move dramatically. A long horizon does not guarantee recovery; it simply gives you more time to withstand volatility. Define in advance when the money might be needed and what event would make you reduce or close the position.

Are you buying spot Bitcoin or using a derivative?

“Buying Bitcoin” can mean materially different exposures. A spot purchase gives you an asset balance through an exchange, broker or wallet arrangement. Futures and options create contracts whose value depends on an underlying price and whose terms, margin and expiration can add risks that a spot holder does not face.

Decision factor Spot purchase Futures or options exposure
Leverage May be unleveraged, although a platform could offer borrowing or margin. Often involves margin; leverage can magnify gains and losses.
Price exposure Direct exposure to the Bitcoin amount held, less fees and platform effects. Contract exposure affected by settlement terms, expiration, premiums, margin calls and liquidity.
Counterparty or platform risk Depends on the exchange, broker or custodian and the protections that actually apply. Includes the derivatives intermediary, contract market and margin arrangements.
Custody May use third-party custody or self-custody. Usually requires an account with an intermediary; it does not automatically give you control of Bitcoin private keys.
Loss capacity needed You could lose a substantial part or all of the amount invested. Losses can be accelerated by leverage and may exceed the cash initially set aside, depending on the product.

The CFTC describes speculation in virtual-currency futures and options as high risk and says leverage amplifies the effect of a change in the underlying cash price. If someone approaches you about a derivatives investment, the advisory says to verify the seller’s CFTC registration before providing money or personal information.

Risks beyond the Bitcoin price

Volatility and irreversible timing decisions

The SEC states that “Bitcoin-related investments may be affected by such volatility.” A purchase made during a sell-off can lose value before any hoped-for rebound, and a buyer may not be able to wait for a recovery. Volatility also affects the price at which an order executes, especially in a fast market or on a thinly traded venue.

Platform, market and fraud risk

The CFTC notes that much of the cash market operates through internet platforms that may be unregulated or unsupervised. A platform can impose withdrawal limits, suffer an outage, be hacked or fail to execute an order as expected. Fraudsters may use urgent “buy the dip” pitches, guaranteed-return claims, fake account statements or requests for remote access.

Research the platform and wallet before supplying payment details or identity information. Confirm the legal entity, fee schedule, withdrawal process, security controls and customer-support channel. Treat an offer that makes certainty sound easy as a warning sign rather than proof that the sell-off is an opportunity.

Protection and recovery limits

SEC guidance says Bitcoin held in a wallet or exchange does not have protections comparable to insured bank deposits or securities accounts. The exact legal treatment depends on the product and jurisdiction, so do not assume that an account balance is covered merely because it appears in an app. Theft or fraud may leave limited recovery options.

Custody: who controls access to your Bitcoin?

Custody is a separate decision from whether Bitcoin is an attractive investment. The SEC explains that a crypto wallet stores the private keys or passcodes needed to access assets; it does not store the underlying Bitcoin itself. Whoever controls the relevant credentials controls the ability to authorize transactions.

Third-party custody

An exchange, broker or other custodian holds or manages access for you. This can be operationally simpler, but you depend on that provider’s security, solvency, withdrawal rules, account-recovery process and applicable protections. A password reset or customer-service process is not the same as guaranteed recovery of an asset after fraud or insolvency.

Self-custody

With self-custody, you control the keys. A cold wallet is typically a physical device kept offline when not in use. It can reduce some online attack exposure, but it does not reduce Bitcoin’s market risk and is not risk-free: the device can be lost, damaged, stolen, misconfigured or used with a compromised computer.

A seed phrase can restore access if a private key or wallet is lost or damaged. That makes its handling consequential. Anyone who obtains the phrase may be able to take the assets, while losing it can make recovery impossible. Keep recovery information private, offline and protected from fire, theft, unauthorized photography, cloud-sync mistakes and untrusted “support” requests. Test your recovery process with a small amount before committing a large balance.

A practical decision process

  1. Define the amount. Set a maximum loss in dollars, not only a percentage. Exclude emergency funds, required taxes, debt payments and money needed for near-term goals.
  2. Choose the exposure. Decide whether you mean spot Bitcoin or a futures/options position. Do not treat a leveraged contract as interchangeable with owning spot.
  3. Check the platform. Review the legal entity, jurisdiction, fees, withdrawal rules, security history and the protections that specifically apply to the product.
  4. Plan custody. For third-party custody, understand account recovery and withdrawal procedures. For self-custody, document how keys and the seed phrase will be secured and how a trusted successor could find instructions without receiving the credentials prematurely.
  5. Set execution rules. Decide in advance whether you will use a single purchase or several smaller purchases, what order type you understand, and how you will respond to a further fall. A schedule can reduce the pressure to make an all-or-nothing call, but it cannot remove loss risk.
  6. Record the decision. Write down the purpose, time horizon, maximum amount, custody arrangement, fees, tax-record process and conditions for changing course. Revisit the plan on a schedule rather than reacting to every headline.

Common mistakes during a sell-off

  • Assuming the first drop is the bottom: no cited source establishes a reliable bottom signal.
  • Using money that has a near-term job: a volatile position can force a sale at the worst time.
  • Adding leverage to “make back” a loss: margin can turn an ordinary price move into a forced liquidation or a loss larger than the initial cash.
  • Ignoring access credentials: a device, password or seed phrase problem can block access even when the market is functioning.
  • Confusing a hardware wallet with investment safety: hardware affects custody, not Bitcoin’s price.
  • Trusting an unsolicited recovery service: legitimate providers do not need your seed phrase or remote control of your device.
  • Failing to keep records: retain transaction details, fees, dates and wallet transfers so you can meet applicable tax and reporting obligations.

When waiting is the more defensible choice

Waiting can be appropriate when you do not yet have an emergency reserve, cannot explain the custody arrangement, need the money soon, are being pressured by a promoter, or would use borrowed funds to buy. It is also reasonable to wait until you understand the product’s fees, withdrawal mechanics and tax-record requirements. Missing a rebound is a possible consequence of waiting; it is not evidence that buying under pressure was correct.

When a purchase may fit a plan

A purchase is more consistent with a disciplined plan when the amount is genuinely disposable, the buyer accepts the possibility of a severe or total loss, the time horizon is long enough for the money’s purpose, the route is understood, and custody and recovery have been arranged before execution. Even then, these conditions do not predict a rebound or make Bitcoin suitable for every investor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Bitcoin sell-off mean Bitcoin is cheap?

No. A decline describes recent price movement, not intrinsic value or a market bottom. The cited sources do not provide a valuation rule or timing signal.

Is buying spot Bitcoin safer than using futures?

They have different risks. Spot avoids the contract-expiration and leverage mechanics of futures, but it still carries severe price, platform, custody and fraud risks. Futures and options add margin, contract and intermediary risks.

Can a cold wallet protect me from losing money?

A cold wallet can change how private keys are stored, but it does not protect against a fall in Bitcoin’s market price. Losing the device or seed phrase can create separate access risks.
