Buying after a drawdown is sensible only if you can tolerate another severe loss, have a long enough time horizon, and set a maximum allocation before placing an order. The safer decision is a risk-budget and implementation exercise, not a prediction about the next price move.
Bitcoin has previously fallen 80% or more and taken roughly three years to recover. A plan that survives that possibility matters more than finding the perfect entry day. This guide shows how to size a position, choose between a lump sum and dollar-cost averaging, compare direct ownership with a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP), and protect yourself from custody failures and fraud.

What a major Bitcoin drawdown does—and does not—tell you
A drawdown is a peak-to-trough decline. It measures how far an asset has fallen from a previous high; it does not tell you whether the decline is finished. A 50% fall can be followed by another 50% fall from the new level, which would leave the investment down 75% from its original peak. Price alone cannot distinguish a temporary sell-off from a long bear market.

In a 2024 SEC-filed risk disclosure using data through July 31, 2024, Bitcoin had 69.84% annualized volatility and an 81.51% maximum annual price decrease. Those are historical observations, not a forecast, but they show why a lower quote is not a safety margin.

What the historical drawdowns looked like
BlackRock iShares reported four Bitcoin drawdowns above 50% since 2014. The three largest averaged approximately an 80% decline. Its historical table, calculated as of June 30, 2025, records:
| Drawdown beginning | Peak-to-trough decline | Time to recovery |
|---|---|---|
| January 7, 2014 | −80% | 1,085 days |
| December 19, 2017 | −83% | 1,071 days |
| November 10, 2021 | −77% | Not stated in the cited table |
The SEC risk disclosure also identifies steep drawdowns in 2011, 2013–2014, 2017–2018, and 2021–2022. Recovery in the historical examples took years, and a future decline could be larger or last longer. Past recoveries do not establish that another one will occur.
The first question is whether you can survive another collapse
Before deciding when to buy, decide how much loss your household can absorb without selling in panic or compromising essential goals. Position size and financial resilience usually matter more than entry precision.
Keep non-negotiable money outside the trade
- Maintain an emergency reserve appropriate to your income stability and essential expenses.
- Do not use money needed for rent, debt payments, taxes, tuition, medical care, or a near-term home purchase.
- Pay attention to high-cost debt and employer retirement matching before adding a highly volatile asset.
- Do not borrow to buy Bitcoin. Leverage can force a sale during a decline and can create losses larger than your original cash.
Set a maximum allocation before buying
Choose a ceiling as a percentage of investable assets, then treat it as a risk limit rather than a target you must immediately fill. There is no universally suitable Bitcoin percentage. The right amount depends on your income, other investments, debt, liquidity needs, tax position, and ability to tolerate an 80% drawdown.

Write down what would make you rebalance. For example, you might sell enough to return to your ceiling after a strong rally, or add only according to a written schedule after a decline. A rule decided in advance is less vulnerable to fear and euphoria than an improvised response to headlines.
Use a stress test
Multiply the proposed Bitcoin position by a severe-loss assumption. If a 75% decline would make you miss a major goal, lose sleep, or sell other assets at a bad time, the position is too large for your risk budget. The test is about behavior as well as arithmetic: an allocation is not conservative if you cannot follow the plan while it is falling.
Choose an entry method: lump sum or staged purchases
Once your maximum allocation is fixed, choose how to deploy that amount. The central trade-off is entry concentration versus the cost of holding cash while you wait.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lump sum | Invest the planned amount immediately | Full exposure if the market rebounds; no cash drag from waiting | Maximum exposure to an immediate further decline | A long-term investor who accepts timing risk and can withstand volatility |
| Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) | Invest equal amounts on a fixed schedule, such as weekly or monthly | Reduces timing and emotional concentration risk; buys more units at lower prices | Cash held back can miss a rebound; repeated orders can add fees | An investor who needs a process to avoid impulsive decisions |
| Staged tranches | Divide a one-time sum into a small number of preplanned purchases | Balances immediate exposure with some protection if prices fall further | Still requires a schedule and may underperform an immediate investment | Someone receiving a windfall who is uncomfortable investing it all at once |
What DCA can and cannot do
FINRA Staff says a disciplined schedule can remove some emotion and may help you avoid impulsive decisions. Regular purchases also buy more units when prices are lower. However, FINRA notes that holding cash longer and investing gradually often produces lower returns than investing a lump sum over longer periods, can miss gains during a rebound, and can create extra transaction fees. DCA is therefore a behavior and timing-risk tool, not a superior-return strategy.

BlackRock says small allocations, regular rebalancing, and DCA may help smooth Bitcoin’s ride, while warning that past performance does not guarantee future results. Decide the total amount first, specify the dates and order sizes, and define when the program ends. Do not convert a temporary schedule into an ever-growing allocation because the market keeps falling.
A practical staged-buying design
- Set the ceiling. Express the maximum Bitcoin value as a percentage of investable assets.
- Set the total dollars. Use only money that can remain invested for years, not your emergency reserve.
- Choose the schedule. For example, divide the planned amount into equal weekly or monthly tranches over a period you can follow consistently.
- Write the stop conditions. Pause if your emergency fund is depleted, income changes, debt becomes unaffordable, or the position reaches the allocation ceiling through price gains.
- Record every order and fee. Accurate records help you calculate cost basis and evaluate whether the plan is being followed.
Direct Bitcoin versus a spot Bitcoin ETP
A spot Bitcoin ETP and direct ownership provide different ways to obtain price exposure. Neither removes market risk. The SEC explains that spot Bitcoin ETPs are exchange-traded commodity trusts that hold Bitcoin; they are not registered as investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940, even though they are commonly called ETFs.
| Consideration | Direct Bitcoin | Spot Bitcoin ETP |
|---|---|---|
| Custody | You or a chosen platform manage access to the Bitcoin and its private keys. | The trust and its custodians hold the underlying Bitcoin; you hold exchange-traded shares. |
| Key-management responsibility | High if you withdraw to a personal wallet; a lost recovery phrase can mean permanent loss. | No personal private-key handling for the shares, though the brokerage account still needs protection. |
| Fees | Trading, withdrawal, spread, and possible wallet costs; amounts depend on the provider. | Sponsor fee and trading costs; even small ongoing fees can materially reduce long-term value. |
| Tracking | Exposure is to the Bitcoin you own, less transaction and custody costs. | The share price can differ from the underlying Bitcoin because of fees, expenses, market conditions, and tracking deviation. |
| Platform and counterparty risk | Exchange insolvency, hacking, fraud, or withdrawal halts can restrict access. Crypto intermediaries may not provide broker-dealer custody rules, SIPC-like protection, or clear separation of exchange, broker, and custody functions. | You face brokerage, sponsor, custodian, and market-structure risks, plus risks in the underlying Bitcoin market. |
| Trading and tax workflow | Transactions, transfers, and disposals can require detailed records. | Trades occur in a brokerage account and may fit a familiar statement and reporting workflow, but tax treatment depends on your jurisdiction and circumstances. |
When direct ownership may fit
Direct ownership may suit someone who specifically wants control of the asset, understands private-key security, and can maintain reliable backups. It adds operational work: choosing a reputable platform, verifying withdrawal procedures, securing devices, and planning what happens to the keys if you become unavailable.
When an ETP may fit
An ETP may be simpler for an investor who wants exchange-traded exposure without operating a wallet or handling public and private keys. It still carries high volatility, sponsor fees, possible tracking differences, and risks from fraud or manipulation in the underlying market. The SEC warns that future extreme volatility, including further declines in Bitcoin’s trading price, could cause shares of a Bitcoin ETP to lose all or substantially all of their value.

If you choose direct ownership, treat custody as a separate project
A hardware wallet can help keep private keys away from an online exchange, but it is a custody tool—not an investment and not a hedge against Bitcoin’s price volatility. A hardware wallet does not prevent a 70% decline, a bad transaction, a compromised recovery phrase, or loss caused by deception.
Basic hardware-wallet controls
- Buy from an authentic source and check the device and packaging for tampering.
- Initialize the device yourself and generate the recovery phrase on the device; never accept a phrase supplied by a seller or displayed on a website.
- Write the recovery phrase on a durable medium and keep it offline in a secure location. Never photograph it, store it in cloud notes, or send it to anyone.
- Use a strong device PIN and enable passphrase features only if you understand how recovery works.
- Install firmware and companion software only through the manufacturer’s verified channels, and confirm transaction addresses on the device screen.
- Test a small transaction and a recovery procedure before transferring a substantial amount.
- Make an inheritance or emergency-access plan that does not disclose the phrase to an untrusted person.
Phishing remains a practical threat. No legitimate support representative needs your recovery phrase. If a message creates urgency, promises a guaranteed return, or asks you to “verify” keys, stop and verify through an independently located official channel.

A step-by-step decision process
- Define the purpose. If the goal is a short-term trade or quick recovery of a loss, a drawdown is not a reliable signal. A long-term, high-risk allocation is a different decision.
- Check your financial base. Confirm emergency savings, manageable debt, insurance, and near-term obligations before allocating speculative capital.
- Run the stress test. Model a 75% to 80% decline in the proposed position and decide whether you could hold without selling essential assets.
- Set the maximum allocation. Put the ceiling in writing and include a rebalancing rule.
- Select the exposure vehicle. Compare direct keys and platform risk with the fees, tracking, sponsor, and brokerage risks of a spot ETP.
- Select the entry method. Use a lump sum only if immediate exposure fits your risk tolerance; otherwise set a fixed DCA or tranche schedule and keep it unchanged through normal volatility.
- Secure and document. Use strong account security, maintain custody backups if holding directly, and record dates, amounts, fees, transfers, and tax lots.
- Review on a calendar, not on headlines. Revisit the allocation at predetermined intervals or when your financial circumstances change. Avoid changing the plan solely because the price moved sharply.
Situations in which buying after a drawdown is usually a poor fit
- You need the money within the next several years or cannot tolerate a multi-year recovery.
- You are buying to recover losses from another investment, using borrowed money, or responding to social-media pressure.
- You have not decided how to store the asset or what happens if an exchange, broker, or wallet is unavailable.
- A further large decline would force you to sell, jeopardize bills, or abandon diversified savings.
- You are relying on a forecast, a guaranteed-return claim, or the assumption that a 50% fall automatically means value has been restored.
What the evidence supports—and what it cannot promise
The historical record supports preparing for extreme volatility, long recoveries, and additional declines. It does not identify a bottom, establish a fair value, or show that DCA will beat a lump sum. It also does not prove that any particular allocation is appropriate for every investor or that a hardware wallet prevents loss. The only controllable variables are the amount at risk, the implementation method, and the quality of your custody and fraud controls.
The Bottom Line
Buy after a major Bitcoin drawdown only when the position is small enough to survive another extreme decline, funded with money you can leave invested for years, and implemented through a custody and purchasing plan you can follow without panic. A drawdown is a reason to reassess risk—not evidence that Bitcoin has reached its bottom.
