Usually, no—the record date is not the practical deadline. For an ordinary cash dividend on a U.S. stock, you generally must buy before the published ex-dividend date to receive the next payment. A purchase on the ex-date or later does not qualify. The record date is the company’s shareholder-list date, so check the security’s official ex-date rather than treating the record date as your trading cutoff.
Qualifying for a dividend also does not guarantee a profit. A stock can fall by approximately the dividend amount when it goes ex-dividend, and your result depends on the share-price move, trading costs and your tax situation.

Record date and ex-dividend date are different
Companies announce a dividend with several dates. Two are easy to confuse:
Recommended Free Tools
- Record date: the date the company uses to identify shareholders shown on its books as entitled to the distribution.
- Ex-dividend date: the market’s trading cutoff for the next dividend. Buying before this date generally makes the buyer eligible; buying on or after it does not.
Investor.gov summarizes the key rule this way: “If you purchase a stock on its ex-dividend date or after, you will not receive the next dividend payment.” That is why the ex-date, not the record date by itself, should drive your trade decision.

For stocks, Investor.gov says the ex-date is usually the record date, or one business day before when the record date is not a business day. Those are general conventions, not a substitute for checking the official listing for the particular security and distribution.
What happens if you buy on different dates?
| When you buy | What the rule means for the next ordinary cash dividend |
|---|---|
| Before the published ex-dividend date | You generally qualify for the declared payment, assuming the distribution is an ordinary cash dividend and the trade is accepted under the market’s rules. |
| On the ex-dividend date | You do not receive the next dividend payment. |
| After the ex-dividend date | You do not receive the next dividend payment; the seller who owned the shares before the ex-date is generally the party entitled to that distribution. |
| On the record date | The date alone does not answer the question. If it is also the ex-date, a purchase that day is too late; if it is not a trading day, the published ex-date will normally be earlier. Verify the official ex-date. |
The table describes eligibility, not investment performance. Being entitled to cash is separate from earning a positive return on the trade.
How to check eligibility before placing an order
- Confirm that a dividend was declared. Find the issuer’s announcement or the market’s official corporate-action information. An expected or rumored payment is not enough.
- Identify the distribution type. Ordinary cash dividends use the standard ex-date convention. Stock dividends and unusually large cash distributions can use different rules.
- Locate the published ex-dividend date. Use the date shown for that specific security and payment. Do not infer it solely from a calendar or an old article.
- Compare your intended trade date with the ex-date. To target the next ordinary cash payment, the purchase must be made before the ex-date. A trade entered on the ex-date is not converted into eligibility by the record date.
- Check the payment and record details. Keep the payment date and record date for your records, but use the ex-date for the buy-or-wait decision.
- Evaluate the whole trade. Estimate how much price movement, commission or spread, and applicable tax would have to be overcome. Dividend eligibility is only one input.
Why the SEC’s T+1 settlement change does not replace the ex-date
Most covered U.S. securities transactions moved to a standard T+1 settlement cycle for trades on or after May 28, 2024. The SEC’s investor bulletin describes T+1 as settling applicable transactions in one business day after the transaction date.

However, it does not give investors a new formula for calculating the dividend cutoff. The practical instruction remains the same: check the published ex-dividend date for the security. Settlement conventions, weekends, holidays, corporate-action processing and the distribution’s terms can make a do-it-yourself calculation unreliable.
Think of the dates as answering different questions. The record date tells the issuer which holders appear on its records. The ex-date tells the market when a buyer stops receiving the next dividend. T+1 describes when a covered trade normally settles; it does not turn a purchase made on the ex-date into a qualifying purchase.

Why buying for the dividend may not make money
When a stock begins trading ex-dividend, its market price may decline by roughly the dividend amount because the incoming buyer no longer receives that cash distribution. Investor.gov specifically warns that the price may fall by the dividend amount on the ex-date. Actual prices can move by more or less because of market conditions, company news and ordinary trading volatility.
A simple example illustrates the distinction without predicting an outcome. Suppose a share trades at $50 and the company declares a $1 ordinary cash dividend. A buyer who purchases before the ex-date may receive the $1 payment, but the share could open near $49 on the ex-date—or at a materially different price if the broader market moves. The buyer’s result is the share-price change plus the dividend, minus trading costs and taxes. The $1 payment by itself is not a guaranteed $1 gain.
This is why a short-term “dividend capture” strategy is not automatically profitable. To judge the trade, consider:
- the amount and timing of the dividend;
- the stock’s likely price movement and volatility;
- bid-ask spreads, commissions or other trading costs;
- the opportunity cost of tying up cash;
- tax treatment in your account and jurisdiction; and
- the possibility that the company changes, suspends or otherwise modifies the distribution before payment.
The available official guidance does not establish a tax result for a particular investor, account or security. For a personal tax decision, consult current tax guidance or a qualified professional rather than assuming every dividend receives the same treatment.
Exceptions to the ordinary cash-dividend timeline
Significant cash dividends
Investor.gov says special rules apply when a cash dividend is significant—equal to 25% or more of the stock’s value. In that situation, the ex-date is deferred until one business day after the payment date. Do not apply the ordinary “record date or one business day earlier” convention to such a distribution without checking the official dates.

Stock dividends
A stock dividend is not the same as a cash dividend. Investor.gov says its ex-date is set after the stock dividend is paid. The procedures therefore differ from the ordinary cash-dividend timeline, and the cash-dividend rule should not be reused automatically.
Due-bill arrangements
Investors who sell around a stock-dividend date may encounter due-bill mechanics described by Investor.gov. These arrangements can affect who must pass the distribution along while the transaction is settling. If the announcement concerns shares rather than cash, read the issuer’s and market’s corporate-action terms closely before trading.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the record date as the buy deadline
A calendar reminder for the record date is not enough. A purchase on the record date may already be on or after the ex-date, so it can miss the payment. Record the ex-date next to the record date in your notes and use the former for the order decision.
Relying on an old T+2 explanation
Most covered U.S. securities now use T+1 for transactions on or after May 28, 2024. An article written under T+2 can leave you counting an extra settlement day. Even with T+1, do not calculate eligibility from settlement alone; confirm the current ex-date.
Assuming all dividends follow one rule
Cash, stock and significant cash distributions can have different ex-date procedures. Confirm the distribution type first. A stock dividend can involve a post-payment ex-date and due bills, while a qualifying large cash dividend can have a deferred ex-date.

Ignoring the exact security
Dates belong to a particular security and distribution. Do not transfer the date from a similar company, a different share class or a previous quarter. Check the issuer’s declared terms and the market’s official corporate-action data.
Confusing eligibility with a favorable return
Receiving the dividend is not proof that the trade worked. Compare the total change in the position with the dividend, costs and taxes. A falling share price can offset or exceed the cash payment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision framework
Use this sequence when you are considering a purchase near a dividend date:
- Is the payment confirmed? If there is no declared distribution, there is no established eligibility to analyze.
- Is it an ordinary cash dividend? If not, move to the special rules for stock or significant cash distributions.
- What is the official ex-date? Treat that date as the market cutoff, not an inferred date from the record date.
- Would you buy the stock without the dividend? If the answer is no, the dividend alone may be an insufficient reason to take the price risk.
- Can the expected total return cover costs and taxes? Include spreads, commissions and your own tax circumstances.
- Are you relying on a short holding period? The shorter the planned holding period, the more sensitive the result is to the ex-date price move and trading friction.
This framework separates a mechanical question—whether the trade is before the ex-date—from an investment judgment about valuation, risk and suitability.
Worked date scenarios
Record date and ex-date fall on the same business day
If the published ex-date and record date are the same trading day, a purchase on that day is on the ex-date and does not receive the next dividend. A purchase made before that date generally does.

The record date is not a business day
Investor.gov says the ex-date is usually one business day before a non-business-day record date. Because the exact listing controls, a buyer should look up the published ex-date rather than counting backward independently.
The payment is a large cash distribution
For a cash dividend equal to at least 25% of the stock’s value, the ex-date can be deferred until one business day after payment. The ordinary cash-dividend shortcut is not reliable for this case.
The distribution is paid in shares
A stock dividend follows a different procedure, with the ex-date set after payment according to Investor.gov. Selling around the date can also involve due bills, so review the specific corporate-action notice.

What to verify in the official notice
Before trading, make sure the notice identifies all of the following:
- the exact security and share class;
- whether the distribution is cash or stock;
- the amount or number of shares being distributed;
- the record date;
- the ex-dividend date; and
- the payment date and any special terms.
If any of these details conflict between a news article and the issuer or market listing, use the current official corporate-action information and contact your broker’s support team for account-specific processing questions.
Bottom line for a U.S. investor
For an ordinary cash dividend, buying before the published ex-dividend date generally makes you eligible for the next payment; buying on or after it does not. The record date identifies the shareholders on the company’s books, but it is not a dependable stand-alone trading deadline. T+1 settlement has been the standard for most covered U.S. securities transactions since May 28, 2024, yet the safest action is still to verify the official ex-date for the specific distribution.
Finally, treat eligibility and profitability as separate decisions. The share price may fall by the dividend amount on the ex-date, and costs and taxes can change the result. Large cash dividends and stock dividends require their own date rules, so check the distribution type before placing an order. This explanation is educational and does not provide individualized investment or tax advice.
