There is no universally cheapest choice. The right answer is the option with the lowest realistic total cost for your needs over the same ownership period. Compare a new car, a used car and your current car using purchase or repair costs, financing, insurance, fuel, maintenance, taxes, registration and expected resale value—not just the sticker price or monthly payment.
Start with the total-cost answer
A new car can offer predictable condition and manufacturer incentives. A used car may require less money upfront but demands stronger due diligence. Keeping your current car avoids a replacement purchase, yet an aging vehicle can bring expensive repairs and rising operating costs. None of those descriptions proves which option is cheapest for you.

Use one expected ownership period for all three choices. If you expect to keep a replacement for five years, estimate the current car’s costs for those same five years. Include the vehicle’s value at the end of that period: resale value for a replacement and realistic trade-in or sale value for the car you own.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises including upfront and ongoing ownership costs when judging affordability. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance likewise emphasizes comparing the full written deal, not an advertised payment.

Build an apples-to-apples comparison
Choose the ownership horizon
Pick a period that matches your actual plan: the time until you expect to sell, trade or replace the vehicle. A short horizon magnifies transaction costs and depreciation; a long horizon gives maintenance and major-repair assumptions more weight. Use the same horizon for the new, used and current-car calculations.
Record every cost category
| Cost category | New car | Used car | Keep current car |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicle or retention cost | Written out-the-door price, including required fees | Written out-the-door price, including required fees | Expected repairs and maintenance during the horizon |
| Financing | Down payment, trade-in credit, loan amount, APR, term and total amount paid | Down payment, trade-in credit, loan amount, APR, term and total amount paid | Existing loan payments and payoff amount, if any |
| Insurance | Vehicle-specific quote for the planned coverage | Vehicle-specific quote for the planned coverage | Current premium and any likely change |
| Use | Fuel or charging, based on your mileage | Fuel or charging, based on your mileage | Fuel or charging, based on your mileage |
| Service | Routine maintenance and expected repairs | Routine maintenance, inspection findings and expected repairs | Routine maintenance and a realistic repair forecast |
| Government charges | Taxes, title, registration and recurring charges | Taxes, title, registration and recurring charges | Taxes, registration and recurring charges |
| Value at the end | Expected resale or trade-in value | Expected resale or trade-in value | Expected sale or trade-in value |
A simple comparison is:
Total ownership cost = upfront cost + financing cost + insurance + fuel or charging + maintenance and repairs + taxes and registration − value at the end of the horizon
Use quotes and documents wherever possible. Your insurance company can provide vehicle-specific premiums; a lender can provide an exact payoff and repayment schedule; a mechanic can estimate repairs; and a dealer must provide the written out-the-door price you are agreeing to.

Financing can reverse the apparent bargain
Compare APR, term and total paid
Ask for the vehicle’s out-the-door price before discussing the loan. Then compare written offers by annual percentage rate (APR), loan length, required down payment and total amount paid. The FTC explains that financing increases the total cost because you pay for credit, including interest.

A lower monthly payment may simply reflect a longer term. That can increase total interest and leave you owing more than the vehicle is worth for longer. Evaluate the payment against your budget, but make the total repayment figure the deciding financing measure.
- Obtain the amount financed, APR, term, payment schedule and total of payments in writing.
- Compare offers from more than one lender before accepting dealer-arranged financing.
- Check whether an advertised rate or incentive has eligibility conditions, such as credit requirements or a particular term.
- Do not let a payment target hide a higher vehicle price, optional products or a longer loan.
Handle a financed trade-in separately
If your current car is financed, request the lender’s payoff amount and obtain a realistic trade-in or private-sale value. The difference is your equity. Positive equity can reduce the replacement loan; negative equity means the car is worth less than the payoff.
Rolling negative equity into a replacement loan increases the amount borrowed and the interest charged. It can also create a cycle in which the next vehicle is underwater before you have built equity. Treat the shortfall as an added replacement cost, not as money the dealer has made disappear. The CFPB’s trade-in guidance recommends determining payoff and value before negotiating.
When a new car makes sense
Potential reasons to choose new
- The starting condition and equipment are known, reducing uncertainty about immediate mechanical work.
- A manufacturer warranty may cover qualifying defects during its stated period.
- Manufacturer incentives or promotional financing may reduce the written cost for eligible buyers.
- You need a particular safety, accessibility, towing or cargo configuration that is difficult to find used.
These are reasons to investigate a new car, not proof that it costs less. Incentives can have eligibility limits, and a promotional payment can conceal a higher price or longer term. Request the complete out-the-door figure, including dealer and government fees, and compare it with the used and current-car totals.

Costs people often omit
Budget the new vehicle’s insurance, fuel, routine service, taxes and registration. Estimate its value at the end of your chosen horizon rather than assuming the purchase price is the cost. The available federal guidance does not establish that a new car is always more expensive or always cheaper over a particular owner’s horizon; current prices, financing, depreciation, mileage and use determine the result.
When a used car makes sense
Do the due diligence before negotiating
- Read the dealer’s Buyer’s Guide. It identifies whether the vehicle is sold with a warranty or “as is.” Note exactly what the dealer promises.
- Obtain the vehicle history report. It may identify reported accidents or flood damage, but the FTC warns that it typically will not list mechanical problems.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Use a mechanic who is not representing the seller. Ask for written findings and estimated repair costs.
- Use documented findings in the negotiation. A needed repair can support a lower price, a repair agreement or a decision to walk away.
- Put every promise in writing. Verbal statements about repairs, warranty coverage or cancellation are difficult to enforce if they are absent from the signed documents.
- Compare financing and ownership costs. A lower purchase price does not guarantee a lower total cost after interest, insurance, fuel, maintenance and repairs.
An optional OBD-II code reader can show certain diagnostic trouble codes during a basic check. It cannot certify a vehicle’s condition, detect every problem or replace an independent inspection.
Understand “as is” and warranty terms
“As is” generally means the seller is not promising to pay for defects after the sale, subject to applicable law. Read the Buyer’s Guide and the contract together. If a dealer agrees to repair a problem or provide a warranty, make sure the scope, duration and responsibility for parts and labor appear in the written documents.
When keeping your current car is the better choice
Forecast repairs instead of using sunk cost
The price you originally paid is a sunk cost. For a keep-versus-replace decision, estimate what the car will cost from today through the selected horizon: scheduled maintenance, tires, brakes, likely repairs, insurance, fuel, registration and any remaining loan payments.

Separate routine work from uncertain major failures. Use service records, the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and an inspection to identify what is due. A repair estimate is not automatically a reason to replace the car; compare that estimate with the financing, depreciation and transaction costs of buying another vehicle.
Check reliability against your real use
Keeping the car may be unsuitable if a breakdown would jeopardize work, medical care, family responsibilities or long-distance travel and you have no practical backup. Conversely, a well-maintained car with known history may fit your needs better than an unknown used vehicle. Include passenger and cargo requirements, daily distance, weather, towing and access to repair facilities in the decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision process
- Define the use case. Write down annual mileage, daily distance, passengers, cargo, towing, operating conditions and the date by which you need a decision.
- Set an affordable ceiling. Include the payment plus insurance, fuel, maintenance and registration. CFPB affordability guidance treats those recurring costs as part of the borrowing decision.
- Get current-car numbers. Request the loan payoff, obtain a realistic market or trade-in value, and ask a trusted mechanic for a condition and repair outlook.
- Collect replacement quotes. For each new or used candidate, obtain the written out-the-door price, financing terms, insurance quote and expected service needs.
- Use one ownership horizon. Enter every cost category in the comparison table and subtract the expected value at the end.
- Stress-test uncertain items. Run a conservative case for higher repairs, insurance or fuel and a favorable case for lower costs. Do not treat an uncertain resale estimate as guaranteed money.
- Choose the option that remains affordable. If a vehicle only works under optimistic assumptions, it is not a robust fit for your budget.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by monthly payment
Problem: A long term can make an expensive car appear affordable. Fix: compare APR, term and total amount paid after negotiating the out-the-door price.
Assuming a history report is a mechanical inspection
Problem: A clean report may omit mechanical defects. Fix: combine the report with an independent inspection and written repair estimates.

Ignoring the current car’s future costs
Problem: Treating continued ownership as free because the purchase already happened understates maintenance, repairs, insurance and fuel. Fix: forecast those costs over the same period as the alternatives.
Rolling negative equity into another loan
Problem: The shortfall increases borrowing and interest and may leave you underwater again. Fix: calculate payoff and value before negotiating; consider reducing the shortfall rather than hiding it in the next contract.
Relying on verbal promises
Problem: A promise to repair or cancel may not appear in the final paperwork. Fix: require every agreed term to be written into the Buyer’s Guide, purchase contract or financing documents before signing.

What the federal guidance does—and does not—tell you
The FTC’s consumer guidance covers used-car Buyer’s Guides, history reports, inspections, financing and ownership costs. Its financing guidance stresses obtaining an out-the-door price and comparing the full deal. CFPB guidance, including pages last reviewed September 12, 2023, addresses affordability, ownership expenses, loan comparisons and financed trade-ins.
These are U.S. federal consumer guidelines, not individualized financial advice. Taxes, insurance, prices, vehicle condition, lender terms and consumer-protection rules vary by location and transaction. A personal answer requires current vehicle-specific quotes, the current car’s payoff and condition, and a realistic estimate of how long you will own each option.
The bottom-line test
Buy new when its documented total cost and predictable condition justify the price for your use. Buy used only after independent inspection, clear warranty terms and a financing comparison. Keep your current car when its forecasted repairs and operating costs are lower than replacing it and its reliability meets your needs. In every case, decide from the same ownership horizon and total cost—not from the badge, sticker price or monthly payment alone.
