Usually, not automatically. A Nifty Total Market Index fund can add exposure to the micro-cap universe, but it also contains the entire Nifty 500 universe that many large-, mid- and small-cap funds already hold. Add one only after checking your funds’ actual indices, holdings and weights, then setting a target allocation that includes the new exposure. Without those holdings, no one can calculate your true overlap or the extra micro-cap percentage.
What the Nifty Total Market Index actually contains
NSE Indices defines the Nifty Total Market Index as a broad equity index covering large-, mid-, small- and micro-cap companies. Its eligible universe combines the stocks in the Nifty 500 with those in the Nifty Microcap 250. That construction is important: “total market” does not mean four equal buckets, nor does it mean every listed company.

The universe is built from two NSE indices
| Part of the universe | What it contributes | What this means for an existing portfolio |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty 500 | Large-, mid- and small-cap stocks represented in the Nifty 500 | Potentially substantial repetition of holdings already owned through separate category funds |
| Nifty Microcap 250 | Micro-cap stocks added beyond the Nifty 500 universe | Potential source of incremental exposure, although existing funds may already own some of these companies |
The index is weighted by free-float market capitalisation. The largest eligible companies therefore receive larger weights; the index does not allocate the same percentage to large, mid, small and micro-cap segments. A fund tracking it will inherit that uneven market-cap weighting, minus implementation effects and costs.

NSE India reports that the Nifty 500 represented about 92.04% of the free-float market capitalisation of NSE-listed stocks on March 30, 2026. That statistic describes the breadth of the Nifty 500 universe included in the total-market construction. It is not a forecast of returns and says nothing about the percentage overlap in your personal funds.

NSE Indices’ March 30, 2026 factsheet says, “The Nifty Total Market Index will track the performance of 750 stocks covering large, mid, small and microcap segments.” The same factsheet’s portfolio-characteristics table lists 751 constituents. Treat both figures as factsheet-date information and verify the latest constituent file before quoting a current count.
Where overlap occurs—and where new exposure may appear
The Nifty 500 creates the main overlap
A large-cap fund, a mid-cap fund and a small-cap fund commonly invest in portions of the broad Nifty 500 universe, even when each fund follows a different category index or active strategy. Because the Nifty Total Market Index includes the full Nifty 500, buying it alongside those funds can mean buying many of the same companies again. The repeated stocks may have different weights, so simply counting common names will not tell you how much of your money overlaps.
Micro-cap exposure is the likely incremental feature
The Nifty Microcap 250 addition is the clearest reason an investor might gain exposure not present in a conventional large-, mid- and small-cap combination. The actual increment depends on the index rules followed by your current funds and their latest portfolios. A small-cap fund may already hold companies that also appear in the micro-cap list, and a fund’s portfolio can change between reporting dates.
“Large-cap,” “mid-cap” and “small-cap” labels are therefore insufficient for a precise answer. You need the underlying index names, constituent files and portfolio weights. No published statistic can supply the overlap percentage for an unspecified investor’s holdings.

When adding a total-market fund can make sense
You want one broad holding with a defined micro-cap allocation
An addition can be reasonable when you deliberately want the Nifty Total Market Index’s market-cap-weighted exposure, including its micro-cap component, and you have room for that exposure in your investment plan. Decide the target percentage first; do not let the new purchase determine your allocation by accident.
You are consolidating separate holdings
Some investors prefer one broad index holding instead of maintaining separate large-, mid- and small-cap funds. In that case, the total-market fund is a portfolio-structure choice. You would normally compare the proposed replacement with the existing funds, plan the transition and check tax, exit-load and transaction consequences in the relevant scheme documents. Consolidation does not establish that the replacement will earn higher returns.
Your current funds leave a measured gap
If a holdings review shows little or no exposure to the micro-cap universe and your risk capacity and time horizon support adding it, a total-market fund may fill that specific gap. The decision should follow the measured gap rather than the product name.

Adding a fourth equity fund while keeping the original three can increase your overall equity percentage and your exposure to smaller companies. If your asset-allocation plan already has a maximum for equity or for small and micro-cap stocks, the purchase can push you above it.

Your existing funds already deliver the desired breadth
After comparing current holdings, you may find that your three funds already provide the market-cap mix you want, including some micro-cap companies. In that case, the total-market fund may mostly duplicate positions while adding another account, statement and rebalancing decision.
You are relying on the word “total” as a safety signal
The index remains an equity investment. A larger constituent universe does not provide downside protection, eliminate volatility or guarantee better returns. Free-float market-cap weighting also means the biggest companies can dominate the portfolio while smaller segments receive much lower aggregate weights than an equal-split approach would provide.
How to calculate your actual overlap before investing
Use dated documents and the same measurement date wherever possible. A practical review can be completed with portfolio files from your fund providers and the official index constituent files.
Recommended Free Tools
- List every current equity holding. Record each scheme’s exact name, plan type, option, underlying index (if any), portfolio date and portfolio weight. Do not rely only on category labels.
- Obtain the proposed fund’s latest portfolio. Record each company, identifier where available, and weight. If it is an index mutual fund, use the scheme’s official factsheet; if it is an exchange-traded fund, also note the latest holdings file and trading information.
- Normalize company names. Different documents may abbreviate or spell the same issuer differently. Use a stable identifier, such as an ISIN, when supplied, and resolve corporate-action name changes before matching.
- Measure name overlap. Count the common issuers, but do not stop there. A ten-percent position in one fund and a 0.2-percent position in another are both common names but not equivalent exposures.
- Measure weighted overlap. For each issuer, take the lower of its weight in the proposed fund and its weight in each existing fund, then aggregate the amounts relevant to your own rupee allocations. This estimates the portion that is economically repeated; it is not a substitute for a full look-through analysis when funds use derivatives, cash or different valuation dates.
- Identify the micro-cap increment. Mark holdings that enter through the Nifty Microcap 250 but are not already present in your other funds. Multiply each such holding’s index weight by the amount you plan to invest. The total is your estimated incremental micro-cap exposure for that purchase, not a permanent figure.
- Recalculate at portfolio level. Combine the proposed allocation with your existing large-, mid-, small- and other equity holdings. Check the resulting equity percentage, concentration in individual issuers and exposure to smaller companies against your written targets.
- Set a rebalancing rule. Decide in advance whether you will direct new contributions, sell an existing fund or periodically rebalance. Without a rule, overlapping funds can drift into an unintended concentration.
What to compare if you are choosing a specific scheme
NSE’s listings show managers associated with Nifty Total Market index funds, but a listing does not establish that a particular scheme is suitable or provide its current fee, assets, tracking record or eligibility terms. Compare the current official documents for each scheme you are considering.

Index mutual fund versus ETF: the practical distinction
Index mutual fund
A mutual fund can be easier to use for scheduled investments and automatic contributions because purchases are made through the fund’s process rather than on an exchange. Check the applicable cut-off times, minimum investment and whether the plan is direct or regular. The fund’s reported return will reflect expenses, cash balances, portfolio turnover and the manager’s ability to replicate the index.
Exchange-traded fund
An ETF trades during market hours. In addition to the fund’s expense ratio and tracking, you must consider exchange liquidity, the bid–ask spread, brokerage and demat requirements. A quoted market price can differ from the underlying portfolio’s indicative value, particularly when trading is thin or markets are volatile.
Tracking is an objective, not a guarantee
A SEBI-hosted scheme information document filed in December 2024 describes a Nifty Total Market fund’s objective as tracking the index “subject to Tracking Errors.” It also states: “However, there can be no assurance or guarantee that the investment objective of the Scheme will be achieved.” The qualification matters for every index fund: your result can differ from the index because of expenses, cash holdings, rebalancing timing, corporate actions, taxes within the fund and trading conditions.

Use matched periods when comparing tracking difference or tracking error. A single short-period result can be distorted by a large rebalance, market gap or temporary cash position. Confirm that the figures come from the same reporting dates and methodology before drawing a conclusion.

Three portfolio decisions, not one product decision
Keep the existing funds and skip the addition
This is coherent when your current holdings already match your target market-cap mix, the measured micro-cap gap is small, or another purchase would breach your equity or volatility limits. Continue monitoring holdings because category portfolios change.
Add the fund and rebalance the others
This approach fits an investor who wants the total-market index’s broad universe and has calculated a target weight for it. Rebalancing prevents the new holding from simply stacking on top of the same companies in the old funds.
Use it as the broad core and simplify
This can reduce the number of funds you monitor, but it changes the portfolio’s exposure and may realize costs when old positions are sold. Review the exact index, current holdings, tax treatment and any exit charges before making a switch. Simplicity is the intended benefit; higher performance is not established by the index name.
Checklist before placing an order
- Have you downloaded the latest holdings for every existing fund and the proposed fund?
- Are the portfolio dates close enough for a meaningful comparison?
- Have you identified which proposed holdings enter through the Nifty Microcap 250?
- Did you calculate exposure using your planned rupee allocations, not just the number of common stocks?
- Will the purchase keep total equity and smaller-company exposure within your written targets?
- Have you compared expense ratio, tracking data and plan type from current official documents?
- If considering an ETF, have you checked trading volume, bid–ask spread, brokerage and demat requirements?
- Do you know how and when you will rebalance after markets move?
The right answer is therefore conditional: add a Nifty Total Market Index fund when its specific universe and micro-cap exposure solve a deliberate portfolio need, or use it to replace a fragmented structure after a documented review. Buying it merely because “total market” sounds more complete can leave you with duplicated holdings and more equity risk than intended.
