Should Retirees Use a Financial Advisor or Manage Investments Themselves?

Retirees do not automatically need a financial advisor, and managing investments yourself is not automatically safer or cheaper. The better choice depends on your time, investment knowledge, confidence, planning needs, portfolio complexity, and the total cost of the service you would receive.

Self-management can fit someone who is willing to research investments, make and document allocation decisions, monitor accounts, and handle related retirement planning. Professional help can fit someone who wants to delegate research or management, needs broader planning, faces complicated tax or income decisions, or is uncomfortable making investment choices. Either route requires ongoing attention to costs, account activity, and whether the strategy still matches your needs.

Start with the actual choice, not the title

“Financial advisor” is not a single, standardized service. An investment adviser may provide continuing advice about buying, selling, or holding investments, monitor an account, help set an asset allocation, or prepare parts of a financial plan. The agreement determines what is included and what is excluded. The SEC explains the general role and fee structure of investment advisers in its Investment Advisers guide.

A broker relationship is generally more transaction-oriented, with commissions or markups associated with trades. Some firms and professionals offer overlapping services, so a title alone does not tell you whether you will receive a one-time recommendation, ongoing monitoring, discretionary management, or help with only particular transactions. Review the relationship, compensation, and written scope before deciding.

Self-managing does not mean ignoring your portfolio. It means you remain responsible for selecting investments, deciding how much risk to take, placing or authorizing trades, reviewing statements, tracking costs, and coordinating investment decisions with withdrawals, taxes, insurance, and estate documents.

A decision framework for retirees

Use these questions to compare your own capacity with the service a professional actually offers. The framework is a decision aid, not evidence that one approach produces higher returns.

Decision axis Self-management may fit when… Professional help may fit when…
Time and interest You are willing to research, review statements, and maintain a written investment plan. You prefer to delegate research, monitoring, or execution, or have limited time for those tasks.
Knowledge and comfort You understand your investment choices and can ask informed questions when something is unclear. You feel unsure about investment decisions or want an experienced person to evaluate alternatives with you.
Service scope Your needs are limited to a relatively straightforward portfolio and you can handle related planning work. You want ongoing advice, a broader retirement plan, or coordination of several financial decisions.
Total cost You can track fund, transaction, account, and other expenses and judge whether each is worthwhile. The defined services are worth the quoted cost to you after comparing other arrangements and incentives.
Oversight You can monitor holdings, account activity, statements, and retirement-plan rules. You want assistance but are prepared to review reports, retain account access, and question activity you do not understand.

When managing investments yourself can work

The SEC’s Working with an Investment Professional guidance says people who are willing to research potential investments and ask questions may not need investment advice. That is a capability test, not a prediction about returns. A do-it-yourself approach is more realistic when you can perform the following work consistently.

Build a written retirement plan

Record your expected income sources, essential and discretionary spending, emergency reserve, withdrawal approach, time horizon, tax considerations, and the level of market loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan. Your asset allocation should be a deliberate decision rather than a reaction to the latest market move.

Know every account and investment

List taxable accounts, individual retirement accounts, employer plans, annuities, cash, and other assets. For each holding, note its purpose, risks, liquidity, fees, tax treatment, beneficiary designation, and the account owner. Read fund prospectuses and other disclosure documents before buying. If you cannot explain why an investment is in the portfolio, pause before adding to it.

Monitor and rebalance

Set a review schedule, such as quarterly statement checks and an annual allocation review. Rebalancing means returning the portfolio to its intended mix when market movements or withdrawals change the weights. Decide in advance what change will trigger a rebalance and how taxes or trading costs will affect the method.

Coordinate withdrawals

Investment management is only one part of retirement income. Keep a current withdrawal schedule, understand which accounts have plan-specific rules, and consider how a sale affects taxes and future liquidity. When a rule is unclear, ask the plan administrator or a qualified tax professional rather than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use safeguards against mistakes

  • Enable account alerts for withdrawals, address changes, and new beneficiaries.
  • Keep statements, trade confirmations, tax forms, and an investment-policy document in an organized location.
  • Use diversified investments that you understand instead of concentrating the portfolio in a few unfamiliar positions.
  • Write down the reason for every major allocation change and the date you will review it.
  • Arrange a trusted contact or emergency access plan that preserves your control and privacy.

When professional help may be worthwhile

Professional assistance is most useful when it solves a problem you would otherwise leave undone or handle unreliably. The following situations commonly justify interviewing advisers.

Your finances have become interdependent

A retirement decision may involve taxable and tax-deferred accounts, Social Security timing, pensions, insurance, charitable gifts, estate documents, and a spouse’s different life expectancy. An adviser who offers planning may help coordinate these decisions, but confirm which topics are actually within the engagement and which require another professional.

You do not have the time or temperament

Some retirees understand investing but do not want to follow markets, process paperwork, rebalance, or make decisions during a sharp decline. Delegating defined tasks can reduce the chance that inattention or panic drives an avoidable action.

You are facing a major transition

Receiving an inheritance, selling a business, moving from work to retirement, becoming widowed, or taking on long-term-care costs can change the plan. A one-time planning engagement may be enough; an ongoing relationship is not automatically necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot evaluate an investment recommendation

If you cannot compare an investment’s risk, liquidity, tax treatment, and total cost with alternatives, an independent explanation may be valuable. You should still understand the recommendation well enough to approve it and monitor the result.

You need help protecting continuity

Illness or diminished capacity can make ordinary account management difficult. The SEC’s Older Investors guidance recommends organizing account information, reviewing fees and disclosures, checking professionals’ backgrounds, and discussing trusted people who could help if your circumstances change.

Match the service to the problem

Do not pay for a broad relationship when you need a narrow task, and do not assume a portfolio-only service includes planning.

Possible service What it might address What to confirm
One-time plan or consultation Allocation review, retirement-income analysis, or a decision about a major financial transition. Whether implementation, follow-up, tax coordination, and updates are included.
Ongoing non-discretionary advice Regular recommendations while you approve trades and retain decision authority. Meeting frequency, monitoring responsibilities, reporting, and how quickly questions are answered.
Discretionary portfolio management The professional can make agreed investment changes without asking for approval each time. Investment guidelines, trading authority, limits, custody, reporting, and how you can terminate the authority.
Transaction-specific assistance Help with a particular purchase, sale, rollover, or account action. Whether compensation is a commission or markup and whether anyone will monitor the account afterward.

Understand compensation and total cost

Compare costs in dollars, not only percentages. An asset-based fee may be calculated on the account value, while investments, custodial accounts, trading, or other services can add separate expenses. Other arrangements can be hourly, flat-fee, commission-based, product-load, markup, or bundled “wrap” pricing. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin on selecting an investment professional describes these structures.

Compensation type How you may be charged Questions to ask
Asset-based A recurring percentage of assets under management, often billed quarterly or monthly. Which assets are included, whether the rate changes by balance, and what other account or fund expenses apply?
Hourly or flat fee A stated amount for time worked or a defined project. What deliverables are included, how revisions are billed, and what implementation costs remain?
Commission, load, or markup Compensation tied to a transaction or a product’s purchase or sale. When is the charge paid, how much is it in dollars, and are there lower-cost alternatives?
Wrap or bundled fee One stated charge intended to cover specified advice and transactions. Which services are covered and which account, fund, or third-party charges are outside the bundle?

Ask for an estimate using your actual balance and expected activity. Request the annual dollar cost, every recurring and one-time charge, and the expenses of recommended investments. A low headline fee can accompany expensive products or limited service; a higher fee can be reasonable only if the defined work is valuable to you. The sources do not establish a universal fee percentage, break-even balance, or performance advantage.

How to choose a financial advisor for retirement

  1. Define the assignment. Write down whether you need investment selection, retirement-income planning, tax coordination, estate coordination, ongoing monitoring, or a single decision.
  2. Interview more than one professional. Ask each candidate to describe the service in plain language, what you will decide, what they will decide, and what is outside their scope.
  3. Get compensation in writing. Ask how the professional and firm are paid, who receives each payment, and what conflicts those incentives may create.
  4. Request the documents. Review the written agreement, fee schedule, disclosures, investment expenses, trading authority, termination terms, and privacy practices before transferring money.
  5. Check registration and disciplinary history. Investor.gov’s Investor.gov/CRS resources explain relationship summaries and background information to review. Verify the individual and firm rather than relying on a credential or advertisement.
  6. Test the communication plan. Confirm meeting frequency, reporting, response times, service during a market decline, and the process for changing beneficiaries or withdrawing funds.
  7. Start with controlled authority. Keep statements sent to you, retain online access, and understand exactly what authority you grant. Do not send money or sign forms you cannot explain.

Questions to take to the interview

  • What services will you provide, and which decisions will I continue to make?
  • Will you prepare a written financial plan, provide ongoing portfolio advice, manage assets with discretion, or handle only particular transactions?
  • How much will advice, account administration, trading, and recommended investments cost me in dollars each year?
  • What conflicts arise from your compensation, affiliations, or product recommendations?
  • Which products, tax matters, legal matters, or insurance decisions are outside your scope?
  • How often will we meet, what reports will I receive, and whom do I contact with questions?
  • What happens if I become ill, lose capacity, or want to end the relationship?

Keep oversight after you delegate

Hiring a professional transfers specific tasks, not your responsibility to understand your own money. Read statements and reports, compare activity with the agreement, and ask promptly about unfamiliar trades, withdrawals, fees, or changes in risk. Maintain your own record of balances, beneficiaries, contacts, and signed documents. Never give up independent access to account information merely because someone else is managing investments.

Review the relationship at least when your income, health, household, tax situation, or spending changes. A service that was appropriate when you retired may no longer fit after a move, a spouse’s death, an inheritance, or a change in goals.

Retirement accounts still require owner attention

FINRA’s guidance on retirement accounts and retirement income says account owners should understand plan rules and costs, monitor investments, and decide when to reallocate or rebalance. A plan administrator may handle transactions and recordkeeping, and some plans provide online or professional retirement advice, but those services do not eliminate the owner’s need to review the account and make appropriate decisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check contribution, withdrawal, distribution, beneficiary, and investment restrictions that apply to each plan. Keep a calendar for required actions and ask the administrator about rules that differ between accounts. Do not assume that an adviser, employer plan, or custodian is responsible for every deadline.

Do not confuse investment advice with a fiduciary helper

The CFPB explains a fiduciary as someone who accepts responsibility for managing another person’s money or property, such as under a power of attorney. The duties described there include acting for that person’s benefit, managing property carefully, keeping it separate, and maintaining records. See the CFPB’s fiduciary explainer for that context.

Those duties should not be used as a substitute for understanding the legal obligations of a registered investment adviser or the authority granted in your investment contract. If a trusted family member will help because of illness or diminished capacity, document the person’s authority, limits, recordkeeping duties, and access rules separately from any investment-advice agreement.

Three practical decision examples

A confident, organized retiree

Someone with a diversified portfolio, a written withdrawal plan, time to review statements, and the confidence to research investments may reasonably self-manage. Paying for a periodic second opinion could address a specific gap without creating an ongoing management fee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A retiree facing several coordinated decisions

Someone combining a pension, multiple account types, charitable goals, and an inheritance may benefit from a planning engagement that coordinates the moving parts. The person should verify whether tax and legal professionals are included or must be hired separately.

A retiree who dislikes financial decisions

Someone who repeatedly postpones reviews or makes impulsive changes during market declines may value ongoing management. The arrangement is sensible only if the professional’s monitoring, communication, and cost are clear and the retiree remains able to review reports.

A practical decision process

  1. List the decisions you need to make in the next year and the tasks you do not want to perform.
  2. Separate investment management from tax, legal, insurance, and family-support needs.
  3. Estimate the annual dollar cost of doing the work yourself, including tools, time, and possible errors, without inventing a return advantage.
  4. Interview professionals whose stated services match your list and obtain written fees and agreements.
  5. Compare the alternatives, choose the narrowest arrangement that solves the problem, and schedule the next review.

Bottom line

Manage investments yourself if you can consistently research, decide, monitor, document, and adapt your plan. Consider a financial advisor when you need ongoing discipline, broader planning, specialized help, or delegated execution. In either case, judge the arrangement by the service delivered, total cost, conflicts, and your ability to retain informed oversight—not by a professional title or the promise of better returns.
