Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust is not a Scotland-only equity fund or a mortgage lender. It is a Scottish-incorporated, London-listed investment company with a global mandate, investing mainly in public and private growth companies. The word “Scottish” describes its corporate history and domicile, not the geography of its portfolio.
“Scottish equities trusts” is not a precise fund category. It might mean trusts incorporated in Scotland, trusts run by Scottish managers, trusts with “Scottish” in their names, or trusts that actually invest in Scottish companies. You must read each trust’s objective and holdings rather than infer its exposure from the name. The Scottish American Investment Company PLC is a useful named comparison because it also invests mainly in equities but explicitly targets real dividend growth as well as capital growth.

Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust vs. Scottish equities trusts: what’s the difference?
The central difference is mandate, not the word “Scottish”. Scottish Mortgage seeks long-term total return from a globally selected portfolio of growth companies, including private businesses. A trust such as The Scottish American Investment Company PLC states that it invests mainly in equity markets to increase capital and grow income, with real dividend growth as the objective. Those are different objectives even though both vehicles are listed investment companies.
There is no single, standard universe called “Scottish equities trusts”. A meaningful comparison therefore starts with each company’s legal structure, investment objective, geography, public-versus-private exposure, concentration, charges and discount or premium to net asset value (NAV).

That distinction matters because a name can answer a historical or corporate question while saying little about the assets shareholders own. Two trusts with similar-sounding names can have different managers, benchmarks, income policies and risk controls. Conversely, a trust with no Scottish reference in its name could own Scottish-listed or Scotland-based businesses. The relevant evidence is the current objective and portfolio disclosure, not the label.
What does “Scottish” mean in Scottish Mortgage?
Is Scottish Mortgage invested in Scotland?
Not specifically. Scottish Mortgage is incorporated in Scotland and its shares trade on the London Stock Exchange, but its investment policy is globally unconstrained. Official materials describe investments spanning the United States and Europe, China, Southeast Asia and Latin America. Its stated objective is to maximise total return from long-term investments selected globally, enabling capital and dividend growth. The company’s About Us and philosophy page describes access to a focused portfolio of public and private growth companies from around the world.
A Scottish company can appear in the portfolio, but Scottish domicile does not create a Scotland allocation. To establish geographic exposure, inspect the latest portfolio list and annual or quarterly data rather than relying on the name. Check how the document defines geography: a company may be incorporated in one country, listed in another and generate sales across several regions.
Does Scottish Mortgage invest in mortgages?
No. “Mortgage” is part of the trust’s historical company name, not a description of its assets. It is an investment company holding shares and other investments in businesses; it is not a retail mortgage lender and does not provide a portfolio of Scottish home loans.
What can “Scottish equities trusts” mean?
The phrase can refer to several different things:
- A trust incorporated or headquartered in Scotland.
- A trust with a Scottish manager or a historical Scottish name.
- A trust whose mandate targets companies listed or operating in Scotland.
- A loose grouping of Scottish investment companies, regardless of where their holdings are located.
These meanings are not interchangeable. Ask whether the comparison concerns domicile, manager, name or portfolio holdings, then use the trust’s current objective and holdings to answer it. “Scottish equities” could also refer to a regional allocation, a stock-exchange listing or a company’s operating base; those are separate measurements.
How the stated objectives differ
| Axis | Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust | The Scottish American Investment Company PLC |
|---|---|---|
| Legal and market identity | Scottish-incorporated investment company with London-listed shares | Named Scottish investment company; confirm current listing and legal details in its latest official documents |
| Stated objective | Maximise total return from long-term investments selected globally, enabling capital and dividend growth | Invest mainly in equity markets to deliver real dividend growth by increasing capital and growing income |
| Style indicated by the objective | Global, growth-company focused; total return is the primary goal | Dividend growth and income combined with capital growth |
| Assets allowed | Public and private companies; the portfolio is selected globally | Mainly equities, but bonds, property and other asset classes may be held from time to time |
| What the comparison does not prove | Its name does not imply Scottish holdings or mortgages | Its objective does not establish that every trust with “Scottish” in its name is income-focused |
The Scottish American wording above is reproduced on its Fidelity information page. Treat it as that company’s objective, not as a definition of the wider Scottish investment-trust category.
“Total return” generally combines changes in the value of investments with distributions, whereas a dividend-growth objective places explicit emphasis on growing the income stream as well as capital. Neither wording guarantees a particular dividend, yield or annual return. The board’s objective is a policy statement, not a promise to shareholders.

Public and private companies
Scottish Mortgage can invest in both listed and unlisted businesses and may continue holding a company after it lists. Private securities can be harder to sell than exchange-traded shares and require valuation judgements when no continuous market price exists. That creates additional liquidity and valuation risk. The presence of private holdings should be checked in the latest portfolio disclosure; it should not be assumed for other Scottish-named trusts.

A private valuation may be based on a recent funding round, comparable companies or another valuation method rather than a live exchange quote. In stressed markets, a sale may take longer or occur at a different value from the accounting valuation. This is why the private percentage, valuation policy and any limits should be read together, rather than treating an unlisted holding as equivalent to a readily tradable share.
Global reach without fixed country or sector quotas
The 2026 annual report says the globally unconstrained policy sets no fixed geographic, industry or sector limits. The equity portfolio will typically contain 50 to 100 holdings, and a new single holding is limited to 8% of total assets at the time of purchase. These are policy descriptions, not a promise about today’s number of holdings or weights. A portfolio of 50 to 100 companies can still be concentrated in a small number of high-growth themes, and growth shares can be volatile.
The 8% rule applies when a new investment is made; market movements can subsequently change a position’s weight. The typical holding range also does not mean every holding is equally sized. Reviewing the largest positions and their combined percentage is therefore more informative than counting securities alone.

Additional flexibility for private-company investment
Shareholders approved a targeted investment-policy amendment on 10 April 2026. It allows up to £250 million of additional private-company investment when the existing 30% limit has been exceeded, subject to defined limits and annual shareholder approval. This is permission for flexibility under specified conditions, not evidence that the trust currently has a particular private-company percentage. The amendment and its context are recorded in the annual report for the year ended March 2026.
That approval should not be read as a forecast that the extra capacity will be used, nor as a current portfolio weight. It is a change in permitted policy subject to conditions and shareholder oversight. The latest data pack is needed to establish what the company actually held at a particular date.
Performance figures: what they show and what they do not
Scottish Mortgage reported the following historical results for the year ended 31 March 2026:
| Measure | Scottish Mortgage result | Reference comparison |
|---|---|---|
| One-year total return to 31 March 2026 | 27.4% on NAV | FTSE All-World total return: 18.0% |
| One-year total return to 31 March 2026 | 26.8% on the share price | Share-price return differs from NAV return because the market price can move to a discount or premium |
| Ten-year total return to 31 March 2026 | 435.2% on NAV | FTSE All-World Index: 233.9% |
These are company-reported historical figures from the March 2026 annual report. The period, return convention and whether figures are measured on NAV or share price matter. Past performance does not predict future returns, and a comparison with the FTSE All-World does not establish that Scottish Mortgage will outperform it over another period.

Charges and why figures must be compared on the same basis
Scottish Mortgage reported ongoing charges of 0.33% as at 31 March 2026. Its FAQ explains that this figure is calculated annually at financial year-end. Do not compare that percentage with another trust’s figure unless the reporting dates and charge definitions match; ongoing charges may exclude or treat costs differently from transaction costs, performance fees or borrowing expenses.
The official Scottish Mortgage FAQ and the latest company documents explain the charge calculation. A trust’s ongoing-charge percentage is only one part of the shareholder’s cost: the dealing spread, platform fee, financing costs and the effect of buying at a premium or discount also affect results.
For a fair comparison, record the reporting date, whether the number is an ongoing-charge figure or a total-cost measure, and whether borrowing costs are included. A lower headline percentage is not automatically cheaper if the definitions differ. Costs should be considered alongside the trust’s objective, liquidity and portfolio composition.

Investment-trust mechanics: NAV, share price and discounts
An investment trust is a listed company. Its shares trade between investors on an exchange, while the company publishes an NAV based on the value of its underlying assets. Supply and demand can push the share price above NAV (a premium) or below NAV (a discount). The share price therefore does not have to equal the value per share of the portfolio.
A discount is not a guaranteed bargain. It can widen if investors become less willing to own the trust, if private-asset valuations are questioned, or if growth shares fall. A premium can disappear just as quickly. Compare NAV, share price and discount or premium using figures from the same date and the same share class. No live price or live discount figure is included here, so a current percentage must come from the latest dated company data rather than an old article.
The discount or premium affects the entry and exit price but does not change the trust’s stated investment objective. It can also move independently of the portfolio during market stress. Historical average discounts are useful context only; they do not establish what the correct price should be on a given day.
Risk, income and time horizon
Scottish Mortgage’s May 2026 factsheet says the trust may be unsuitable for someone seeking regular income or investing for less than five years. Its shares and income can fall as well as rise. The stated risks include:
- Growth-stock volatility: companies priced for rapid expansion can suffer sharp falls when expectations or interest rates change.
- Private-company liquidity and valuation: unlisted holdings may take longer to sell and may not have a continuously observable market price.
- Overseas currency exposure: exchange-rate movements can increase or reduce sterling returns.
- Emerging-market risk: markets may have weaker liquidity, different regulation and greater political or economic uncertainty.
- Borrowing risk: investment-company borrowing can magnify gains and losses.
- Discount or premium risk: the share price can diverge from NAV even when the underlying assets are unchanged.
The May 2026 factsheet supplies the general risk wording. It is not a personalised suitability assessment, and a different trust can have a materially different risk profile.

Income should be assessed separately from total return. A growth-oriented trust may pay a variable dividend and is not designed around a fixed income target. A dividend-growth objective also does not ensure that distributions rise every year. Investors who need regular withdrawals should examine the distribution policy, payment history and the possibility that the share price may fall while income is being received.

- Identify the legal vehicle. Confirm that you are comparing listed investment companies, not an open-ended fund, an operating company or a mortgage lender.
- Read the current objective. Look for words such as total return, capital growth, income, dividend growth or preservation. The objective tells you what the board and manager are trying to deliver; the name does not.
- Check geographic definitions. Determine whether “Scottish” refers to incorporation, management or actual portfolio exposure. Use the latest holdings and regional breakdown.
- Separate public from private exposure. Record the proportion and valuation method for unlisted assets, and note any policy limits or shareholder approvals.
- Measure concentration. Review the top holdings, number of positions and sector weights. Do not treat a stated range of 50 to 100 holdings as a guarantee of low risk.
- Assess income needs. Check the distribution history and objective. A trust seeking total return may not provide the regular income required by a particular investor, while a dividend-growth objective can still produce variable distributions.
- Compare costs consistently. Align reporting dates and definitions for ongoing charges, borrowing and other expenses.
- Compare market price with NAV. Use same-date figures and record whether the trust trades at a discount or premium. Treat the difference as a changing market condition, not a guaranteed source of return.
- Check the investment horizon and risks. Read the latest factsheet, annual report and policy disclosures before deciding whether the trust fits your circumstances.
For each candidate, write down the objective, benchmark or comparator if stated, geographic policy, largest holdings, private-asset treatment, ongoing charges, distribution approach and current discount or premium. Doing this side by side prevents a domicile comparison from being mistaken for an investment-style comparison.
The official documents index listed an October 2026 factsheet, an August 2026 quarterly data pack and the annual report to March 2026 when accessed on 13 October 2026. Are Scottish investment trusts focused on Scottish companies?
Not necessarily. A trust can have a Scottish name while investing internationally, as Scottish Mortgage does. Conversely, a trust without “Scottish” in its name could hold Scottish companies. The only reliable test is the mandate and the disclosed portfolio. There is no representative published statistic establishing how much of the broader category “Scottish equities trusts” is invested in Scotland.
If a provider describes a trust as “Scottish”, check whether that is a marketing description, a legal domicile, a manager identity or a regional strategy. A genuine regional mandate should explain its eligible markets and normally provide a regional or country breakdown. Without that evidence, it is safer to treat the phrase as ambiguous.
What is the difference between Scottish Mortgage and Scottish American?
Scottish Mortgage is designed around globally selected long-term investments and maximum total return, with a strong growth-company orientation and the ability to own public and private businesses. Scottish American’s stated policy is mainly equity investment aimed at real dividend growth through both increasing capital and growing income, while permitting bonds, property and other assets from time to time. The comparison is therefore one of objective and emphasis, not a claim that all Scottish trusts follow either approach.
The two names also should not be compared by geography alone. Scottish Mortgage’s global policy explicitly spans multiple regions and has no fixed country, industry or sector quotas. Scottish American’s wording allows assets beyond equities, so its asset mix must be checked in its own current documents. Neither name, by itself, tells you the present holdings, yield or discount.

Choose the comparison that matches the question you actually need answered. If you want to know where a trust invests, read its holdings; if you want to know how it is intended to make money, read its objective; and if you want to know what you pay or could receive on exit, check current charges, NAV and market price together. Scottish Mortgage’s Scottish identity is corporate and historical, while its portfolio and risks are global. “Scottish equities trusts” is too broad to analyse without naming a specific trust and examining its latest documents.
