Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust vs. global index funds: key differences

Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust is not a global index tracker. It is a London-listed investment trust whose managers choose a concentrated portfolio of public and private growth companies. A global index fund normally follows a specified index, so its holdings, costs and risk depend on the exact index and share class you choose.

The practical choice is therefore active, high-conviction exposure—with private companies, gearing and a share price that can diverge from net asset value (NAV)—versus rules-based index exposure. Neither structure is automatically safer or better. A fair comparison requires the fund name, index, currency, dates, total-return basis and fee definition to be aligned.

What Scottish Mortgage is—and what a global index fund is

Scottish Mortgage: an actively managed investment trust

Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust is listed on the London Stock Exchange. Baillie Gifford managers select companies they believe can compound over long periods, rather than trying to hold every company in a market index. The trust says, “We are benchmark agnostic, meaning the managers can select the companies they have the highest conviction in.” Its stated purpose is to “identify, own and support the world’s most exceptional growth companies.” Those are the trust’s descriptions of its approach, not an independent guarantee of results.

An investment trust is a company with a fixed pool of shares in issue (subject to corporate actions). You buy and sell its shares on the exchange. The portfolio has an underlying NAV, calculated from the assets and liabilities, while the market sets a separate share price. That structure matters whenever the share price moves above or below NAV.

Global index fund: a category, not one product

“Global index fund” describes a method, not a single investment. The relevant index might cover developed markets only, include emerging markets, weight companies by market capitalisation, or use another rule. A fund may replicate the index by holding securities directly, use sampling, or employ derivatives. Its legal form may be an exchange-traded fund, an open-ended fund or another vehicle, with different dealing and pricing arrangements.

Before comparing a tracker with Scottish Mortgage, identify the exact index, fund share class, domicile, currency, distribution or accumulation treatment, ongoing-charge measure and dealing terms. Without those details, statements such as “the global fund is cheaper” or “it holds thousands of shares” are too broad to be reliable.

Snapshot comparison

Feature Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust Global index fund
Management Active selection by Baillie Gifford managers; the trust is benchmark agnostic. Normally follows a named index under published rules; the exact process depends on the fund.
Portfolio Growth companies in public and private markets, with manager discretion over position sizes. Constituents and weights determined by the chosen index and the fund’s replication method.
Reference benchmark FTSE All-World is used as a reference benchmark, not as a holdings template. The tracked index is the intended portfolio reference.
Active share 88% relative to FTSE All-World, reported as at 30 April 2026. Not meaningful without naming the index and measuring the fund against it.
Reported assets and exposure As at 30 April 2026: 58.6% in 45 publicly listed companies, 40.5% in 53 private companies and 0.8% in net liquid assets. Not stated for a generic category; holdings depend on the selected index and fund.
Typical number of equity holdings The official FAQ says the trust typically has 50 to 100 equity holdings; this is a range, not a date-specific count of every exposure. Not stated; constituent counts differ widely between indices.
Ongoing charge 0.31% in the 2026 factsheet data as at 30 April 2026; the FAQ reports 0.33% as at 31 March 2026. These are different reporting dates. No comparable figure is established without a named fund and share class.
Gearing 11% gross gearing and 10% net gearing, reported as at 30 April 2026. Do not assume borrowing or no borrowing; check the individual prospectus.
Price and valuation Exchange-traded share price and separately calculated NAV. The 30 April 2026 factsheet showed 1410.00p per share, NAV of 1376.21p and a 2.5% premium. Dealing price and valuation rules vary by legal form and provider.
Primary divergence risks Manager selection, concentration, private-company valuations, gearing, emerging-market exposure and the premium or discount to NAV. Market, country, sector, currency and index-construction risks, plus any fund-specific implementation risks.

Every Scottish Mortgage figure in the table is a dated snapshot. Portfolio weights, charges, gearing, NAV and the market premium can change, so check the latest official factsheet and disclosures before acting.

How the portfolios differ

Public and private companies

Scottish Mortgage’s reported allocation includes both publicly traded and privately held businesses. Public shares have continuously quoted market prices during exchange hours. Private holdings are valued using the trust’s valuation process and available transaction or company information; they do not have a live exchange quote that investors can sell at each minute. A percentage assigned to private companies is therefore a reported asset allocation on a particular date, not a promise that those holdings can be liquidated at the stated valuation.

A broad equity index generally defines an eligible universe of listed securities. Whether a private company can enter the index, and under what conditions, is an index-rule question rather than a feature shared by all trackers. This is one reason the trust’s portfolio cannot be treated as a look-alike version of a global index.

Concentration and manager discretion

Active managers can hold fewer names, size positions according to conviction and avoid companies that meet an index rule but not their investment case. That flexibility can produce results very different from the broad market. It can help if the selected businesses outperform, and hurt if a large position disappoints or if the managers’ themes fall out of favour.

Index funds accept the index’s weights. A market-capitalisation index can become heavily exposed to the largest companies or countries; another index may impose caps, screens or equal weighting. “Diversified” therefore describes a particular index’s spread, not a universal guarantee about every global tracker.

Benchmark, active share and what they do not tell you

Scottish Mortgage uses the FTSE All-World Index as a reference benchmark, but the managers say they are benchmark agnostic. The trust’s reported active share of 88% relative to that benchmark, as at 30 April 2026, measures how different the holdings were from the index at that time. It does not rate management skill, predict returns or prove that the portfolio is riskier in every market.

A benchmark is useful for context: it gives you a consistent market reference when examining performance and exposure. It is not a promise that the trust will hold the same countries, sectors or companies. A tracker’s objective, by contrast, is normally expressed as following its named index, subject to fees, trading costs, tax and tracking difference.

Costs: compare like with like

The trust’s official documents report two ongoing-charge figures on different dates: 0.31% in the factsheet data as at 30 April 2026 and 0.33% in the FAQ as at 31 March 2026. The discrepancy does not by itself show an error; it may reflect the reporting period or calculation basis. Use the latest document and read its definition before comparing it with an index fund’s ongoing charge.

For a complete comparison, include costs that may sit outside an ongoing-charge percentage:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Broker dealing commissions, bid–offer spreads and any exchange or settlement charges.
  • Platform or account fees charged by your investment provider.
  • Stamp duty or other transaction taxes where applicable to the purchase.
  • Fund-level transaction costs and the difference between an index’s return and the tracker’s realised return.
  • Foreign-exchange conversion costs when the security, fund or index is priced in a different currency from your account.

Do not compare an investment trust’s ongoing charge with a tracker’s headline fee unless both figures cover equivalent items and the dates match. A lower stated fee does not eliminate market risk or guarantee a better net return.

Gearing introduces another source of variation

The factsheet reported gross gearing of 11% and net gearing of 10% as at 30 April 2026. Gearing means the trust has borrowing or other financing exposure in addition to shareholders’ equity. When portfolio assets rise, leverage can increase the effect on shareholders’ returns; when they fall, losses can be amplified. Interest costs and the terms of the borrowing also matter.

An index tracker may be unleveraged, but that cannot be assumed from the words “global index fund.” Some products can use derivatives or borrowing within stated limits. Read the fund’s prospectus and annual report to establish whether leverage exists, how it is measured and what limits apply.

Share price, NAV, premium and discount

When you buy Scottish Mortgage shares, you transact at the exchange price, not directly at the portfolio’s NAV. If the market price is above NAV, the shares trade at a premium; if below, they trade at a discount. Investor demand, expectations, liquidity and market sentiment can all affect that relationship.

The factsheet’s 30 April 2026 snapshot showed a 2.5% premium, with a 1410.00p share price against 1376.21p NAV. That was a point-in-time observation, not a normal or guaranteed level. A later buyer could pay a different premium, buy at a discount or see the relationship change after purchase.

Open-ended index funds generally use their own dealing and valuation mechanisms, while exchange-traded index funds trade on an exchange. The legal structure determines how creation, redemption, spreads and intraday pricing work. Compare the actual product documents rather than assuming that every tracker handles liquidity like an investment trust.

Risk differences to understand

Growth and concentration risk

Scottish Mortgage’s high-conviction approach can create larger company, sector or theme exposures than a broad index. A setback in a major holding, a change in interest-rate expectations or a lower valuation for long-duration growth businesses can affect the trust disproportionately. An index fund still falls when global equities fall, but its outcome follows the index’s own concentration and weighting rules.

Private-company and valuation risk

Private assets can offer access to businesses before a public listing, but their valuations are less frequently observable and their shares are less readily traded. A financing round, company update or revised valuation assumption can change the reported NAV. The absence of a live quote can also delay the visible recognition of market stress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emerging-market and China-related risks

The trust’s disclosures warn that emerging markets, including China, may involve market volatility, political and economic instability, market shutdowns, trading and liquidity constraints, settlement difficulties, corporate-governance concerns, regulatory and legislative changes, and tax risks. These are risk factors identified by the trust, not predictions that a particular event will occur. A global index fund may also include emerging markets, but the amount and countries depend on its index.

Premium or discount risk

Even if the underlying portfolio value is unchanged, a change in the trust’s premium or discount can move the share price. This is separate from the performance of the companies held. A tracker with a different legal structure may have a different pricing mechanism, but it will still have market and liquidity risks.

How to compare performance fairly

Scottish Mortgage’s official performance material displays both share-price and NAV series against the FTSE All-World Index. Those are different return series: an investor who bought the listed shares experienced the share-price result, while NAV performance reflects the portfolio value before the market premium or discount effect.

For any comparison, match all of the following:

  • The same start and end dates, including the valuation time used on the final date.
  • The same currency, or a clearly stated currency-hedging treatment.
  • Total return rather than price return when dividends and distributions are relevant.
  • Share-price returns against the investor’s actual share-price experience, or NAV returns against an equivalent fund-value measure.
  • Fees, dealing costs and taxes on a comparable basis.

A short period can be dominated by valuation changes, currency movements or the trust’s premium or discount. A long period can still fail to predict the future. The April 2026 factsheet states: “Past performance is not a guide to future performance.”

A step-by-step comparison process

  1. Name the comparator. Record the exact global index fund, share class, ticker or ISIN, domicile and currency. “Global index fund” alone is not specific enough.
  2. Read the objective and index methodology. Confirm whether the index covers developed markets, emerging markets or both; how it weights companies; and whether the fund uses full replication, sampling or derivatives.
  3. Align the data date. Download the latest Scottish Mortgage factsheet, holdings information and disclosures, then obtain the comparator’s current factsheet or prospectus. Do not mix a current fund figure with an old trust figure without labelling the dates.
  4. Separate cost measures. Write down each product’s ongoing charge, transaction-cost disclosure, dealing spread and any platform fee. Check what each percentage includes.
  5. Map the exposures. Compare country, sector, company-size, public/private and currency exposures. For Scottish Mortgage, note the manager-selected positions and any gearing; for the tracker, use its published holdings and index weights.
  6. Check valuation mechanics. For the trust, record the share price, NAV and premium or discount on the same date. For the tracker, check its dealing time, pricing point or exchange spread.
  7. Compare returns on one basis. Use identical dates, currency and total-return treatment, and keep share-price and NAV results separate.
  8. Stress-test the decision. Ask how you would react to a large fall in growth shares, a widening discount, a private-asset write-down, higher borrowing costs or an emerging-market disruption.
  9. Review account and tax rules. Your broker, account wrapper and tax residence can change the net outcome. These details are personal and are not established by the product comparison alone.

Which structure fits which objective?

Reasons an investor might examine Scottish Mortgage

  • You want a manager to make concentrated, global growth-company selections rather than accepting an index’s weights.
  • You understand that private holdings, gearing and a premium or discount can make the share price behave differently from a broad equity market.
  • You can tolerate substantial variation from the FTSE All-World reference benchmark.
  • You are willing to monitor trust disclosures, borrowing, portfolio changes and valuation information.

Reasons an investor might examine a global index fund

  • You prefer a rules-based portfolio tied to a clearly named index.
  • You want the fund’s country and sector exposure to be determined by published index rules rather than a manager’s conviction.
  • You prefer the dealing and valuation framework of an open-ended or exchange-traded tracker, subject to its own spreads and implementation risks.
  • You want to compare several products using a consistent index, fee and tracking-difference framework.

These characteristics do not amount to a personal recommendation. Suitability depends on your objectives, time horizon, capacity for loss, existing holdings and tax position.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling Scottish Mortgage a tracker. It has a global remit and a global benchmark reference, but managers choose the holdings actively.
  • Treating the FTSE All-World reference as a portfolio promise. The benchmark provides context; it does not require index-like holdings.
  • Assuming a premium is permanent. The quoted premium was a dated snapshot and can move to a discount.
  • Comparing headline fees without definitions. The two official trust figures themselves were reported for different dates.
  • Using NAV and share-price returns interchangeably. They measure different investor experiences.
  • Assuming all global trackers are equally diversified. Index methodology determines the actual country, sector and company exposures.
  • Ignoring leverage. Gearing can magnify both gains and losses and contributes to divergence from an unleveraged benchmark.
  • Using private-company percentages as if they were daily market prices. They are reported allocations based on the trust’s valuation process at a stated date.

What to verify before placing an order

Check the latest official trust factsheet, FAQ, holdings page, annual report and risk disclosures. Confirm the current share price, NAV, premium or discount, gearing, portfolio mix and charge calculation. For the proposed index fund, read its current key-information document, factsheet and prospectus, identify the index and replication method, and note the dealing cut-off, spread and all account costs. If the documents use different dates or currencies, preserve those qualifications rather than presenting the figures as directly comparable.

Finally, decide what would make you sell, reduce or rebalance the holding before a period of market stress. The structural differences—active selection, private assets, gearing and trust pricing versus index rules and fund implementation—are more durable than any single month’s performance chart.
