Short answer: The cited SCHD snapshot shows a higher 30-day SEC yield, while VYM has the lower stated expense ratio and a much broader holdings count. Those figures come from different dates, and neither a yield snapshot nor a holdings total predicts future income or total return. SCHD tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index; VYM seeks to track the FTSE High Dividend Yield Index. The better fit depends on whether you prioritize the characteristics of SCHD’s index, VYM’s breadth and lower fee, your need for current cash flow, and how much concentration and distribution variability you can accept.
Both are equity exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Their share prices, dividends and portfolio composition can fall or change, so this comparison is a framework for deciding what to investigate—not individualized investment, tax or allocation advice.

The expense-ratio gap is 0.020 percentage points, or two basis points. If the percentages stayed unchanged, that difference would equal about $2 per year for each $10,000 invested before considering trading costs, taxes or other account expenses. Actual investor costs can differ, and a fund’s expense ratio is not a complete accounting of every cost.

What is the difference between SCHD and VYM?
Different index mandates
SCHD is designed to follow the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index. VYM seeks to track the FTSE High Dividend Yield Index. Because the underlying indexes use different eligibility rules, weighting methods and rebalancing processes, the funds can own different companies, sectors and proportions even though both are intended for dividend-oriented equity exposure.
Schwab Asset Management describes SCHD as “A straightforward, low-cost fund offering potential tax-efficiency.” That is the sponsor’s general description, not a promise about your tax bill or after-tax return. Vanguard describes VYM as a fund that “seeks to track the performance of a benchmark index that measures the investment return of common stocks of companies that are characterized by high dividend yields.” Neither description guarantees a distribution level, price result or tax outcome.
Why the index distinction matters
An index is the rulebook that determines what the ETF can own and when it changes. Two funds with the same broad label—dividend ETF—may therefore behave differently during a market cycle. A fund with fewer constituents can show larger effects from each holding; a broader fund can spread company-specific events across more stocks. Neither structure is automatically safer. The relevant question is whether the index behavior complements the rest of your portfolio.
Does SCHD pay more than VYM?
Read the yield measure and date first
In the cited snapshots, SCHD’s 30-day SEC yield was 3.37% on 2026-10-07, compared with VYM’s 2.22% on 2026-07-31. These observations are almost three months apart. They are useful descriptions of what each sponsor reported at those dates, not a synchronized forecast of the next payment.

SCHD also reported a 3.00% distribution yield for the trailing 12 months (TTM) as of 2026-08-31. Vanguard reported VYM’s dividend yield as 2.29% on 2026-07-31. A distribution yield based on past payments and a 30-day SEC yield calculated from recent income and standardized rules answer different questions. The labels should not be combined into one ranking.
What the 30-day SEC yield tells you
The SEC yield is a standardized, backward-looking annualized measure intended to make bond and fund income comparisons more consistent over a recent 30-day period. It can move as portfolio income, prices and accounting inputs change. It is not a contractual coupon and does not guarantee the amount or timing of an ETF’s distributions.
What a trailing or stated dividend yield tells you
A trailing distribution or dividend yield relates recent distributions to a fund price under the sponsor’s stated methodology. It reflects what was paid in the look-back period, not what will necessarily be paid next quarter. Distribution amounts can rise, fall or be irregular, and the share price denominator can change every trading day.

Cash income is only one part of an equity investment. A higher indicated yield can accompany different sector exposures, slower or faster dividend growth, price volatility, tax characteristics and total-return outcomes. The available snapshots do not establish a same-period performance ranking for SCHD and VYM. If you compare performance, use identical start and end dates, include reinvested distributions where appropriate, and compare total return rather than price change alone.

How broad are the portfolios?
SCHD’s reported holdings
Schwab Asset Management reported 102 SCHD holdings on 2026-10-08. With fewer constituents, each position can represent a more meaningful share of the portfolio than in a fund holding hundreds of stocks. That can make index changes or company-specific news more visible in results. The count itself does not reveal sector weights, position limits or valuation, so review the current portfolio before investing.
VYM’s reported holdings
Vanguard reported 604 VYM holdings on 2026-07-31. Its 2026-03-31 fact sheet listed 612 stocks. The difference illustrates why a holdings number needs a source, date and label: “holdings” and “stocks” may be reported at different times or under different counting conventions. VYM’s larger count generally indicates broader company diversification than the cited SCHD snapshot, but it remains an equity fund exposed to market-wide declines.
Concentration questions to ask
- What percentage is in the ten largest positions?
- Which sectors dominate, and how would that interact with your existing funds?
- How often does the index rebalance, and how much can weights change?
- Are you comfortable with the possibility that a high-dividend index may emphasize mature or slower-growing businesses at a particular point in the cycle?
Those answers can change as indexes rebalance. Treat the published holdings as a current snapshot rather than a permanent portfolio description.
What does turnover mean for SCHD and VYM?
Schwab reported SCHD portfolio turnover of 39.60% as of 2026-08-31. Vanguard’s VYM fact sheet reported 11.3% turnover as of 2026-03-31. Turnover is a measure of how much the portfolio changed over a reporting period; the dates and calculation conventions differ, so the figures are directional rather than a laboratory-controlled comparison.

Potential effects of higher turnover
- More buying and selling inside the fund can create additional trading activity and implicit costs.
- Index reconstitutions can change sector and company exposures more quickly.
- In a taxable account, distributions from the fund and your own decision to sell shares are separate tax events; turnover alone does not determine your personal tax bill.
Potential effects of lower turnover
- A lower reported rate may indicate fewer portfolio changes during the stated period.
- It does not eliminate market risk, company risk or the possibility of changing distributions.
- It should not be treated as proof of superior tax results or superior returns.
Which dividend ETF is right for your portfolio?
Investigate SCHD first if your priority is the SCHD index profile
SCHD may deserve closer examination if you want an index-based dividend strategy with the characteristics shown in its sponsor’s materials: the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index, 102 reported holdings in the cited snapshot, and the higher of the two dated 30-day SEC-yield observations. That does not mean the yield will remain higher, and it does not establish that the fund will outperform.
Before choosing it, examine how its current sector and largest-position weights fit alongside your other U.S. equity funds. A portfolio can become concentrated even when each individual ETF appears diversified.
Investigate VYM first if breadth and the lower stated fee matter most
VYM may be a better research starting point if you value a much larger reported stock count and the lower stated expense ratio. Vanguard’s snapshots showed 604 holdings on 2026-07-31 and 612 stocks on 2026-03-31, while the expense ratio was 0.04% as of 2026-02-27. Its cited 30-day SEC yield was lower than SCHD’s, but the dates are different and the number is not a promise about future income.

Broader exposure can reduce the impact of one company, but it also means the fund may include many businesses whose dividend policies and growth prospects differ. Review the current index and portfolio rather than assuming “more stocks” means every risk is lower.

If you need dependable spending cash
Neither ETF should be treated as a guaranteed paycheck. Equity distributions can change, and share prices can decline when you need to sell. Build a withdrawal plan that accounts for cash reserves, other income sources, sequence-of-returns risk and the possibility of reduced dividends. The dated yields in the table can help you frame a research question, but they cannot set a safe withdrawal amount.
If you are investing for long-term growth
Compare each fund’s total-return role with a broad-market allocation, not just the distribution rate. Dividend payments are part of total return; a fund can distribute more cash while its price grows more slowly, or distribute less while retaining exposure to companies with different growth characteristics. Use matching periods and reinvestment assumptions when reviewing historical results, and remember that past performance does not guarantee future results.
If the ETF will sit in a taxable account
Account type, holding period, distribution character and your tax jurisdiction affect after-tax results. The sponsor phrase “potential tax-efficiency” is not a personalized tax assessment, and the expense ratio does not capture your tax rate. Check current tax documents and consult a qualified tax professional for advice about your circumstances.

Quick Recap
A practical SCHD-versus-VYM decision process
- Write the job for the ETF. Decide whether you are seeking current distributions, a dividend-oriented equity tilt, diversification from existing holdings or a long-term total-return component. A fund cannot be evaluated without a defined role.
- Set a measurement date. Record the sponsor pages or fact sheets you use and their as-of dates. Do not compare a current SCHD yield with an old VYM yield and present the difference as contemporaneous.
- Choose one yield definition for the question. Use 30-day SEC yields when you need a standardized recent-income measure. Use trailing distribution or dividend yields when you are analyzing past payments. Label the measure every time you record it.
- Inspect the full portfolio. Check holdings, largest positions, sector weights, geographic exposure and any overlap with your other ETFs. The reported counts of 102, 604 and 612 are snapshots, not substitutes for that review.
- Compare costs beyond the headline ratio. Note the stated expense ratio, bid-ask spread, trading commission policy at your broker, account fees and any tax consequences. The two-basis-point difference can matter over very large balances or long periods, but it is only one input.
- Consider turnover and rebalancing behavior. Ask whether the fund’s index changes fit your willingness to tolerate shifting exposures. Treat the cited turnover figures as dated observations with different reporting dates.
- Stress-test the income plan. Model a lower distribution, a market decline and the need to sell shares during a downturn. If the plan fails under those conditions, the problem is the plan’s dependence on one ETF, not simply the choice between these two funds.
- Decide how the ETF fits the whole account. Set a target allocation, purchase schedule and rebalancing rule before buying. Revisit the rule when your objective, time horizon or risk tolerance changes—not merely because one quarter’s yield moved.
Risks and limitations common to both funds
- Equity-market risk: Both funds can lose value, including during broad market declines.
- Dividend-change risk: Companies can cut, suspend or omit dividends, and the ETF’s distribution can change.
- Price-and-income mismatch: A high distribution does not prevent a falling share price or guarantee positive total return.
- Index risk: The rules of each benchmark determine eligibility and weighting; a rule-based approach can remain exposed to an unattractive segment until the next rebalance.
- Tracking and trading costs: An ETF may not perfectly match its index after expenses, transaction costs and portfolio implementation effects.
- Tax uncertainty: Your account type and tax situation determine the effect of distributions and sales. Fund-level language cannot determine your personal outcome.
- Data freshness: Yields, holdings and turnover change. Recheck the latest Schwab and Vanguard materials before placing an order.
Questions to answer before you buy
- Am I comparing the same yield measure and the same observation date?
- How much of my existing portfolio already overlaps with the ETF’s largest holdings or sectors?
- Can I tolerate a lower distribution or a substantial price decline without selling at an unfavorable time?
- Is the ETF intended for spending income, diversification or total return?
- Does my account type make the distribution and sale of shares taxable in a way I have planned for?
- Have I checked the current prospectus, holdings, spread and trading conditions rather than relying on a historical snapshot?
