Short answer: SCHD and VOO are both U.S. stock ETFs, but they select stocks differently. SCHD follows a dividend-quality index and has recently reported higher yield measures; VOO follows the broad S&P 500 and charges a lower expense ratio. Neither fund guarantees income or growth. Compare total return, risk, taxes, costs, diversification and your need for cash before choosing.
What SCHD and VOO actually track
SCHD: a dividend-screened large-company portfolio
The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD) seeks to track the total return of the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index before fees and expenses. Schwab describes that index as focused on dividend quality and sustainability. The selection rules therefore emphasize companies that meet the index’s dividend-related requirements rather than simply buying every large U.S. company.

That mandate can produce a portfolio whose sector and company weights differ materially from the overall large-cap market. A dividend screen is an exposure choice, not a promise that every holding will continue paying the same dividend or that the fund’s share price will rise.
VOO: broad exposure to the S&P 500
The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) seeks to track the S&P 500 Index, a benchmark measuring large-cap U.S. stocks. It is designed to represent a broad slice of the largest publicly traded U.S. companies, with weights determined by the benchmark’s rules rather than by a dividend screen.

“Broad-market” does not mean every U.S. stock. VOO is a large-cap index fund, and its results can differ from smaller-company, international or specialized funds. It also does not guarantee growth: the value of an S&P 500 ETF can fall when its holdings fall.
Current comparison snapshot
The figures below are issuer-reported snapshots with different dates and, for yield, different definitions. Check the Schwab and Vanguard fund pages again before acting because yields, holdings and distribution amounts change.
| Measure | SCHD | VOO | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Index objective | Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index | S&P 500 Index | Dividend-screened exposure versus broad large-cap exposure |
| Reported yield | Distribution yield (TTM) 3.00%, as of Aug. 31, 2026; 30-day SEC yield 3.37%, as of Oct. 7, 2026 | Dividend yield 1.05%, as of Aug. 31, 2026 | Labels and calculation periods are not identical, so these are not an apples-to-apples yield test |
| Total expense ratio | 0.060%, Schwab product page accessed Oct. 13, 2026 | 0.03%, effective Apr. 28, 2026, according to Vanguard | Fund operating expenses reduce returns; the difference is 0.030 percentage point |
| Holdings count | 102, as of Oct. 8, 2026 | 505, as of Jul. 31, 2026 | Counts are dated snapshots; weights and index rules also determine diversification |
| Distribution schedule | Quarterly payments are listed for 2025–2026 | Quarterly schedule shown on Vanguard’s Mar. 31, 2026 fact sheet | Dates and amounts can change |
A lower holdings count does not automatically make SCHD unsafe, and a higher count does not guarantee a better outcome. The companies, their weights, sector mix and the behavior of each index matter more than the raw number alone.

Cash distributions are one component of an ETF investor’s result, not a separate reward added on top of the fund’s value. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance states: “A fund’s distributions are not the same as performance.” Its Fund Distributions – Investor Bulletin dated Aug. 19, 2026, explains that when a fund distributes dividends, interest or capital gains, the fund’s net asset value (NAV), and typically its market price, decreases to reflect value transferred to shareholders.
A simple illustration
Assume an ETF share is worth $100 immediately before a $2 distribution. If market conditions are otherwise unchanged, the share may be worth about $98 after the distribution while the investor receives $2 in cash. The investor has not automatically gained an extra $2; value moved from the fund to the shareholder. Real prices also move because of market trading, taxes, fees and other factors, so this is a mechanics illustration rather than a forecast.

If the investor reinvests the $2, the account owns more shares, but the investment remains exposed to market risk. If the investor takes the cash, the account has a cash payment and a lower number of dollars remaining in the fund. In either case, the meaningful comparison is total return over the same period, calculated consistently with distributions and reinvestment treatment.
Use standardized measures consistently
SCHD’s 3.00% figure is a trailing-twelve-month distribution yield, while its 3.37% figure is a 30-day SEC yield. VOO’s 1.05% figure is identified by Vanguard as dividend yield. These measures can use different income definitions and observation periods. A reader should not subtract one issuer’s number from the other and call the result a precise income advantage.

Compare total return, not just the cash payment
Total return combines price or NAV change with distributions. For a fair SCHD-versus-VOO comparison, select the same start and end dates, use the same treatment of distributions (reinvested or taken as cash), and compare the same share class and account assumptions. A period in which SCHD paid more cash can still produce a lower total return if its share price declined more; VOO can have a smaller distribution and a higher total return if its price appreciation more than offsets the difference.
Past performance does not predict future results. Total-return data should be read alongside volatility, drawdowns and the investor’s ability to tolerate losses. A fund that has recently led on return or yield is not thereby the universally better choice.
Costs: the stated expense ratio is only one line item
VOO’s stated expense ratio is 0.03%, effective April 28, 2026, while SCHD’s total expense ratio is 0.060% on Schwab’s product page accessed Oct. 13, 2026. Both ratios are deducted from fund assets rather than billed as a separate transaction, so they reduce the return reflected in the NAV. The 0.030-percentage-point difference is small for a single year but compounds over long periods as assets grow.

Investor.gov also notes that ETF investors may pay brokerage commissions or other transaction costs in addition to operating expenses. Potential costs include a trading commission charged by the account provider, the bid-ask spread when buying or selling, and any account-level fees. A low expense ratio does not eliminate those costs. Before trading, check the actual commission schedule and order execution details for your account.

Diversification and concentration are different trade-offs
VOO reported 505 holdings as of July 31, 2026; SCHD reported 102 holdings as of Oct. 8, 2026. Those counts describe the portfolios on particular dates, not permanent characteristics. SCHD’s dividend-quality rules can leave it more concentrated in the companies that pass its screen. VOO’s larger holdings count spreads ownership across more S&P 500 constituents, although index weighting means the largest companies can still account for a substantial share of assets.
Because the indexes use different eligibility and weighting rules, the funds can have different exposures to sectors, industries and individual companies. A reader who wants dividend screening should accept that its sector mix may depart from the market; a reader who wants an S&P 500 core should accept that the index includes companies with low or no dividend yields. Neither approach removes stock-market risk.
How distributions affect cash-flow planning
Both funds list quarterly distributions, but a schedule is not a guarantee. Schwab’s listed SCHD payments for 2025–2026 are quarterly. Vanguard’s March 31, 2026 VOO fact sheet also shows a quarterly dividend schedule. Payment dates, ex-dividend dates and amounts can change with the portfolio’s income, capital-gain activity and the issuer’s declaration.

Do not build a fixed household budget on a quoted yield alone. A distribution can be reduced, omitted or changed, and the ETF’s market value can decline while cash is being paid. Investors who need predictable spending money may need a separate cash-reserve plan rather than relying on an equity ETF’s quarterly payment.
Tax and account considerations
In a taxable account, distributions can create a tax liability even when an automatic reinvestment program uses the cash to buy more shares. The tax treatment depends on the type of distribution, the account, holding periods and individual circumstances. Reinvestment changes what happens to the cash; it does not make a taxable distribution disappear.
Account type matters when comparing a higher-distribution strategy with a lower-distribution strategy. Retirement-account rules, withdrawal timing and tax rates can differ from those in a taxable brokerage account. This article cannot determine which option is preferable for a particular tax situation; consult the account documents and a qualified tax professional for personal advice.

If you want a dividend-screened strategy
SCHD is the direct match for an investor who specifically wants an index built around dividend quality and sustainability. The trade-off is that the screen can produce different sector and company concentrations than the broad market, and the distribution is not guaranteed. Evaluate whether those exposures fit your risk tolerance rather than treating the recent yield as a permanent income rate.

VOO is the direct match for an investor seeking S&P 500 exposure through a low stated expense ratio. Its lower recent dividend yield is a consequence of the benchmark’s composition, not proof that the fund cannot produce income. The fund remains fully exposed to large-cap U.S. equity-market declines.

If you need current cash
Compare the amount and timing of distributions with your actual spending need, while recognizing that both can change. Consider whether selling shares would be acceptable during a market decline, because an equity fund is not a guaranteed-income product.
If you are accumulating for a long horizon
Prioritize a consistent total-return comparison, costs, diversification and the level of volatility you can withstand. Reinvesting distributions can support compounding, but it does not remove the possibility of losses or make one index safer in every market.
A practical, repeatable comparison process
- Write the objective. State whether the account’s primary job is current cash flow, long-term accumulation, broad U.S. exposure or a dividend-quality tilt.
- Fix the comparison period. Use identical start and end dates for SCHD and VOO. Record whether distributions are reinvested and whether the figures are before or after taxes.
- Check official snapshots. Record each fund’s current expense ratio, yield definition and date, holdings count and distribution history. Do not mix SCHD’s trailing distribution yield with VOO’s dividend yield as though they were the same statistic.
- Inspect concentration. Review the largest holdings and sector weights for the date being studied. Holdings counts alone cannot show how much the largest positions influence results.
- Estimate all costs. Include the expense ratio, commissions, bid-ask spread and any account charges. A fee comparison that omits trading costs is incomplete.
- Model the cash decision. Decide whether distributions will be taken in cash or reinvested, and account for the possibility that payments change.
- Check taxes and risk capacity. Consider the account type, potential tax on distributions and how much decline you could tolerate without selling in panic.
- Document the reason. Choose the exposure that matches the stated objective, then review it periodically rather than switching solely because one fund had a higher recent yield or return.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling SCHD “income” and VOO “growth” as guarantees. Both are equity ETFs that can lose value, and both can deliver a combination of distributions and price changes.
- Comparing unlike yield labels. SCHD’s TTM distribution yield, SCHD’s 30-day SEC yield and VOO’s dividend yield are not interchangeable calculations.
- Ranking funds by distribution size. A large payment can accompany a falling NAV. Use total return and risk measures for performance analysis.
- Ignoring taxes because dividends are reinvested. Reinvestment does not necessarily prevent taxable income in a taxable account.
- Assuming the holdings count tells the whole diversification story. Portfolio weights and index methodology determine how concentrated the economic exposure is.
- Using stale figures. The quoted yields, expenses and holdings are dated snapshots. Refresh the issuer pages before making a current comparison.
- Forgetting trading friction. Brokerage commissions and other transaction costs can matter, especially for frequent or small trades.
- Treating a recent winner as a permanent winner. Index leadership changes with valuations, company fundamentals, interest rates and market conditions.
What the comparison ultimately tells you
SCHD and VOO are not two versions of the same fund. SCHD makes dividend quality and sustainability part of the index selection process; VOO gives broad S&P 500 large-cap exposure. The dated issuer figures show SCHD with higher reported yield measures and VOO with the lower stated expense ratio, but those facts do not settle the investment decision.
Use the fund whose exposure, cash-flow approach, costs, tax consequences, diversification and risk level fit your written objective. Judge the result by consistently measured total return and risk, not by the size of a quarterly distribution.
