SBI Life vs LIC and HDFC Life: How to Compare Insurers Before Buying (FY 2024–25 evidence)

There is no evidence-based “best” choice among SBI Life, LIC and HDFC Life for every buyer. Compare the exact policy you may purchase—not the insurer’s name—using the same sum assured, term, premium-payment schedule and policy duration. Then check exclusions, conditions, riders, claim requirements, servicing arrangements and lapse consequences. Insurer-level figures such as solvency, claim settlement and grievance data are useful context, but they do not replace a policy document, a current quote or underwriting for your circumstances.

The figures below are from FY 2024–25 disclosures, generally as at or for the year ended 31 March 2025. Recheck current disclosures and the policy wording before paying a premium.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you

SBI Life, LIC and HDFC Life are different companies offering multiple products. A comparison of their names or one headline ratio cannot tell you whether a particular term, endowment, savings or participating policy is suitable for your dependants, income, liabilities and budget.

A useful comparison answers four separate questions:

  • Does the proposed policy solve the financial need you have identified?
  • Are the three quotations genuinely comparable in cover, term and payment structure?
  • What do the contract’s exclusions, conditions, options and surrender rules require?
  • What evidence exists about the insurer’s financial position and service, and how narrowly should that evidence be interpreted?

The available FY 2024–25 material does not provide a same-basis, same-period claim-settlement comparison for all three insurers. It also does not include a buyer-specific quote, eligibility assessment or underwriting result. An overall ranking would therefore overstate what the evidence shows.

Start with the policy you actually need

Define the protection objective

Write down who would need money, how much they would need and for how long if you died. Typical components include outstanding loans, replacement of household income, children’s education, care for dependent family members and immediate expenses. Subtract assets that would realistically be available to those dependants, rather than assuming every investment can be sold without loss or delay.

This exercise gives you a target death benefit and a duration. A policy designed to replace income until retirement is not comparable with one intended only to clear a short loan. Do not reduce the cover merely to obtain a lower premium if the resulting benefit no longer meets the objective.

Set a sustainable budget

Decide how much premium you can continue paying during an adverse year, not only in the month you buy. Record whether the quotation is annual, half-yearly, quarterly or monthly, and whether the payment period is shorter than the policy term. A limited-pay proposal can require larger payments over fewer years; a regular-pay proposal can spread payments but keep the obligation running for longer.

Ask each insurer for the same payment frequency and payment period. If one illustration assumes annual payment and another assumes monthly payment, compare the total scheduled outlay and the contractual benefits—not just the displayed instalment.

Check eligibility before comparing prices

Age, occupation, tobacco or nicotine use, health history, income, existing cover and travel or residence can affect acceptance, premium and conditions. Disclose answers completely and consistently on every proposal form. A low preliminary quote is not a promise that the insurer will issue the policy on those terms; underwriting may change the premium, add exclusions, request tests or decline the application.

Make quotations like-for-like

Request written illustrations for the same assumptions. Put the key fields in one worksheet before discussing which insurer appears cheaper.

Field Keep constant when comparing Why it matters
Policy type Compare the same type, such as pure protection with pure protection, or participating savings with participating savings. Benefits, charges, guarantees and uncertainty differ fundamentally between product types.
Sum assured Use the same death-benefit amount. A lower premium may simply buy less cover.
Policy term Use the same number of years and the same intended end date. Shorter cover can look cheaper while leaving a protection gap.
Premium-paying term Match regular-pay or limited-pay structure and the number of payment years. Payment obligations and lapse risk change with the schedule.
Payment frequency Compare annual with annual, or monthly with monthly, and record any frequency loading. The instalment alone does not show total scheduled premiums.
Riders Add or remove the same riders with the same amounts and definitions. A quote with extra benefits is not directly comparable with a basic quote.
Assumptions For non-guaranteed benefits, use the same illustration assumptions and separate guaranteed from non-guaranteed amounts. Illustrated values are not necessarily payable values.

Obtain the benefit illustration and policy wording, not only a salesperson’s summary. Save the version and date of each document. If a quote changes after medical underwriting, replace the old line in your worksheet rather than continuing to compare an obsolete number.

Read the contract before judging the price

Benefits and guarantees

Identify the amount payable on death, maturity or other insured events, and when each amount becomes payable. In savings or participating products, mark every amount as guaranteed or non-guaranteed. Check whether bonuses, additions or investment-linked values are shown as illustrations rather than promises.

Exclusions and conditions

Read exclusions, waiting periods, suicide provisions, misstatement rules, occupation or activity conditions and requirements for continuing cover. Note the exact consequences of a missed payment, reinstatement and changes in personal information. Do not rely on a general statement that a policy “covers everything”; the contract controls.

Riders and optional benefits

Compare the trigger, covered events, evidence required, benefit amount, expiry age and premium for each rider. A critical-illness, disability, accident or waiver rider can have a narrower definition than its everyday label suggests. Check whether a rider ends when the base policy ends or at an earlier age.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lapse, revival and surrender

Record the grace period, what happens during it, and the conditions and cost of revival. For savings policies, examine the guaranteed surrender value, any discontinuance or paid-up treatment and the point at which a value becomes available. A policy that is affordable only if nothing changes can be unsuitable even when its projected return looks attractive.

What the FY 2024–25 solvency figures mean

IRDAI’s FY 2024–25 annual report lists the following solvency ratios as at 31 March 2025:

Insurer Solvency ratio Reference point
LIC 2.11 IRDAI FY 2024–25 insurer table, 31 March 2025
SBI Life 1.96 IRDAI FY 2024–25 insurer table, 31 March 2025
HDFC Life 1.94 IRDAI FY 2024–25 insurer table, 31 March 2025
IRDAI stipulated control level 1.50 Minimum control level referenced for 31 March 2025

IRDAI states that all life insurers complied with the minimum stipulated solvency ratio of 1.50 (the control level of solvency) as at 31 March 2025. On that date, each of the three figures was above the control level.

Solvency is an insurer-level, date-specific indicator of capital relative to required solvency. It is not a guarantee that a particular claim will be paid, a forecast of future solvency, or evidence that one policy fits your needs. A sensible review checks the trend in current regulatory disclosures and then returns to the contract and quote. Do not treat the small difference between 2.11, 1.96 and 1.94 as a product ranking.

How to interpret claim-settlement information

SBI Life’s FY 2024–25 integrated report states a 99.4% death claim settlement ratio for individual and group claims. That is a company-reported figure with a defined scope. It should not be used to rank SBI Life against LIC or HDFC Life unless the other figures cover the same claim class, denominator, treatment of repudiated or pending claims and reporting period.

Before relying on any claim percentage, ask:

  • Does it cover individual claims, group claims or both?
  • Is the denominator claims received, claims decided, or another population?
  • Is it measured by number of claims or by rupee amount?
  • Does the period end on the same date?
  • Are pending, reopened, repudiated or withdrawn claims treated in the same way?

A high percentage can coexist with delays or disputes in particular cases, while a lower percentage may reflect a different denominator or product mix. The practical test is whether you understand the policy’s disclosure duties, exclusions and claim process and whether your nominees can locate the policy and supporting records.

Use grievance data as a checklist, not a league table

IRDAI recorded 1,20,429 life-insurance grievances on Bima Bharosa during FY 2024–25. Nearly 64% concerned survival claims, policy servicing and unfair business practices. This is a sector total, not an insurer-specific complaint rate or a ranking of SBI Life, LIC and HDFC Life.

  • Which channels can change address, nominee, bank details or payment instructions?
  • How will you receive acknowledgement and a reference number for a service request?
  • What is the escalation path if a request or claim is delayed?
  • Which documents must nominees submit, and where can they obtain the current checklist?
  • How are survival or maturity benefits communicated and paid?

Keep copies of proposals, medical reports, premium receipts, policy schedules, correspondence and service-request numbers. Clear records make a specific issue easier to resolve than an argument based on an industry-wide total.

What is established about each insurer

LIC

LIC’s FY 2024–25 annual report gives a solvency margin of 2.11 as at 31 March 2025. It also reports introducing six new insurance products during that year, including LIC’s Yuva Term and LIC’s Digi Term individual plans. Product names, eligibility, pricing and availability can change, so inspect the current policy documents rather than assuming a product introduced in FY 2024–25 remains available on the same terms.

SBI Life

SBI Life’s FY 2024–25 integrated report gives a solvency ratio of 1.96 and reports the 99.4% death claim settlement ratio described above for individual and group claims. The ratio’s scope must remain attached to the number; it is not a like-for-like ranking against an unspecified LIC or HDFC Life statistic.

HDFC Life

IRDAI’s FY 2024–25 insurer table lists HDFC Life’s solvency ratio at 1.94 as at 31 March 2025. That supports a dated solvency comparison only. The available evidence does not establish a directly comparable all-three claim ratio or a buyer-specific product advantage.

A step-by-step buying process

  1. Write the need. State the people protected, target death benefit, intended end date and maximum sustainable premium.
  2. Select the product category. Decide whether the objective is protection, savings, income, investment-linked participation or a combination. Do not compare unlike categories by premium alone.
  3. Request matching quotations. Give each insurer the same age, cover, term, payment frequency, payment period, riders and disclosed personal information.
  4. Complete underwriting honestly. Review every answer before signing. Ask what medical tests or documents are required and wait for the issued offer, including any extra premium or exclusion.
  5. Build a contract comparison. Record guaranteed benefits, non-guaranteed illustrations, exclusions, rider definitions, grace period, lapse and revival rules, surrender or paid-up treatment and claim documents.
  6. Check service logistics. Confirm how nominees can report a claim, update records and escalate an unresolved request. Verify that the policy schedule and contact details are correct after issuance.
  7. Review the free-look or cancellation rights stated in the issued policy. Use the exact period and procedure in that document; do not assume every product has identical terms.
  8. Store and communicate. Keep the policy and receipts securely and tell nominees where to find them, who to contact and what identification or records may be needed.

A decision framework when quotations differ

When one premium is lower

First confirm that the sum assured, term, payment period, riders, underwriting class and payment frequency match. Then check whether the lower figure excludes a benefit, assumes different health information or applies only before underwriting. A lower price is meaningful only after those checks.

When one illustration shows higher maturity values

Separate guaranteed from non-guaranteed values and identify the assumptions, charges and dates behind the illustration. Higher projected values are not a reason to accept less protection, a longer payment obligation or exclusions you cannot accept.

When service reputation is the deciding factor

Turn reputation into verifiable process details: available service channels, acknowledgement of requests, document requirements and escalation steps. Ask for written answers and retain them with the policy file.

When financial indicators appear close

The FY 2024–25 ratios for all three insurers exceeded IRDAI’s 1.50 control level on 31 March 2025. A close dated comparison should prompt you to check current filings and policy terms, not to treat the ratio as a forecast or a tie-breaker by itself.

Questions to ask before signing

  • What exactly is guaranteed, and what is only illustrated?
  • What event triggers each benefit, and what evidence is required?
  • Which exclusions or waiting periods apply to this policy and its riders?
  • How much will I pay in total, at this frequency and for this many years?
  • What happens after a missed premium, during the grace period, on lapse, and after revival?
  • What value, if any, is available on surrender or discontinuance and when?
  • How can a nominee notify a death claim, and where is the current document checklist?
  • How do I change nominee, address, bank details or payment instructions?
  • What is the escalation route for an unresolved service request or claim?

Common comparison mistakes

  • Choosing the company before defining the cover: this reverses the decision order and can produce an unsuitable policy.
  • Comparing unlike products: a pure protection policy, a savings plan and an investment-linked plan have different objectives and risk.
  • Using one claim percentage as a ranking: scope, denominator and period may differ.
  • Treating solvency as a promise: the ratio is dated and insurer-level, not a claim guarantee.
  • Ignoring payment duration: a low instalment can conceal a longer obligation or a higher total outlay.
  • Relying on an illustration: non-guaranteed values can change and should be labelled as such.
  • Under-disclosing health or tobacco use: inconsistent answers can create avoidable disputes at claim time.
  • Failing to brief nominees: a policy is harder to use when beneficiaries do not know it exists or where records are stored.

Bottom line for SBI Life vs LIC vs HDFC Life

On 31 March 2025, IRDAI reported solvency ratios of 2.11 for LIC, 1.96 for SBI Life and 1.94 for HDFC Life, all above the 1.50 control level. SBI Life separately reported a 99.4% death claim settlement ratio for individual and group claims for FY 2024–25, but the available evidence does not provide matching claim statistics for all three insurers. Those facts are context, not a universal winner.

Choose only after matching the policy design to your need, obtaining comparable current offers, reading the issued wording and confirming that the premium remains sustainable. Recheck current regulatory and insurer disclosures because the figures above are tied to FY 2024–25 and may change.
