Saxo is often the better fit for eligible non-U.S. investors who prefer a more unified, bank-style platform with straightforward product discovery and integrated support.
The decision depends first on where you live. Saxo accounts are provided through country-specific entities, so availability, fees, products and investor protection vary by jurisdiction. Interactive Brokers also applies country and account restrictions, but it lists the United States among its available locations. A U.S. resident should generally choose Interactive Brokers rather than assume a Saxo account is available.
Quick verdict: Saxo or Interactive Brokers?
| If you are… | Usually the better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A U.S. resident | Interactive Brokers | IBKR lists the U.S. as an available country. Saxo’s public regional disclosures exclude U.S. persons. |
| Buying U.S. stocks or ETFs regularly | Interactive Brokers | Eligible U.S. residents can use IBKR Lite with $0 commissions on qualifying U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs. |
| Investing a small amount every month | Interactive Brokers | IBKR Recurring Investments supports fractional shares. Saxo AutoInvest currently buys whole units only. |
| Trading frequently, using options or futures | Interactive Brokers | Its tiered pricing, order tools, TWS, APIs and broad market access are designed for active users. |
| Looking for a simpler, more integrated investing experience | Saxo | SaxoInvestor and SaxoTrader bring a broad range of products into a relatively unified interface. |
| Prioritizing a banking-style protection regime | Saxo, if eligible | Clients of Saxo Bank A/S may receive Danish deposit and investor protection, subject to the relevant entity and limits. |
Neither broker is universally cheaper or safer for every customer. Before opening an account, check the local website, legal entity, fee schedule, available products and protection regime that apply to your country of residence.
Availability and legal entity
Interactive Brokers
Interactive Brokers lists the United States and many other countries and territories as available locations. U.S. individual customers may be eligible for Individual, Joint, IRA and UGMA/UTMA accounts, depending on their circumstances.

That does not mean every product, exchange or account feature is available everywhere. Trading permissions, tax rules, account type and local regulations still determine what you can actually use.
Saxo
Saxo is not one identical global retail account. The entity serving you depends on your residence. That entity determines the applicable prices, products, client terms and investor-protection rules.
Saxo says it supports clients in more than 180 countries, but that should not be interpreted as universal account availability. Its U.K. disclosure, for example, says the service is not directed at U.S. citizens, residents or entities. A website being accessible from the United States does not establish that a U.S. resident can open an account.
For either broker, confirm these points before comparing headline prices:
- Which legal entity will hold your account?
- Can residents of your country open the account?
- Which exchanges and products are enabled?
- Are you classified as a retail or professional client?
- What investor-protection scheme applies?
Platforms and user experience
Saxo: simpler access to a broad product range
Saxo’s retail platform lineup is centered on SaxoInvestor and SaxoTrader, generally available through one login. SaxoInvestor is the simpler investing interface, while SaxoTrader is aimed at investors who need more analysis and trading functionality.
Some older help pages still use the name SaxoTraderGO. Current Saxo marketing increasingly uses SaxoTrader, so the exact name and feature set may depend on your region.
SaxoTraderPRO is the downloadable professional platform for Windows and Mac. Saxo says it can support up to six screens and includes tools such as an advanced trade ticket, Level 2 Depth Trader and time-and-sales data. Exchange-data subscriptions may be required for Level 2 information.
Interactive Brokers: more choice, but more configuration
IBKR offers several interfaces:
- Client Portal: web-based account management and trading.
- IBKR Desktop: the newer desktop platform.
- Trader Workstation (TWS): the most established advanced platform.
- IBKR Mobile: mobile trading and account management.
- IBKR GlobalTrader: a simpler interface for global investing.
- APIs: tools for automated and programmatic trading.
This range is a strength if you want to progress from simple investing to advanced execution. It can also be a source of confusion. Market-data subscriptions, trading permissions, account settings and platform-specific features are separate choices. Seeing a security in TWS does not automatically mean you have permission to trade it.
Recommended Free Tools
IBKR Desktop’s documented production release is Version 3.0. Listed additions include trade history beyond seven days, standalone tools, tools as tabs and a bonds screener. Some other enhancements listed by IBKR are roadmap items rather than current features.
Investment products and market access
Saxo’s global product pages advertise approximately 23,000-plus stocks across more than 50 exchanges, 7,400-plus ETFs across more than 30 exchanges, 250-plus futures, 3,100-plus listed options and 5,200-plus government and corporate bonds.
IBKR says IBKR Pro provides access to more than 170 markets in 40 countries. Its ETF information refers to global ETF trading across more than 90 market centers.
These figures are not directly comparable. Saxo is mostly reporting the number of instruments, while IBKR is emphasizing markets and market centers. Neither figure guarantees that a particular customer can trade every listed security. Residence, currency, permissions, account type and product classification all matter.

Both brokers offer a wide range of stocks, ETFs, bonds, options and futures in eligible jurisdictions. Saxo may appeal to investors who want those products presented in a bank-style environment. IBKR is generally stronger for users who want to reach many markets and control execution in detail.

Trading costs
Stocks and ETFs
For U.S. residents, IBKR’s published U.S. stock and ETF pricing is particularly competitive:
| IBKR plan | Published U.S.-listed stock and ETF pricing |
|---|---|
| IBKR Lite | $0 commission for eligible U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs |
| IBKR Pro Fixed | $0.005 per share, with a $1 minimum |
| IBKR Pro Tiered | $0.0005–$0.0035 per share depending on monthly volume, with a $0.35 minimum |
IBKR Lite is not a universal zero-cost plan. It is limited to eligible residents and qualifying U.S.-listed securities. Certain OTC securities, warrants, delisted ETPs and recurring-investment instructions may be charged under other pricing rules.
Saxo’s global pricing overview advertises U.S. stock commissions from $1. The exact rate depends on your country, account tier and instrument. Saxo tells customers to check the trade ticket and the instrument’s trading conditions rather than rely on the global “from” price.

For U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs, IBKR is generally the cheaper documented option. For non-U.S. securities, compare the local schedules carefully. A low commission can be outweighed by currency-conversion charges, custody fees or exchange costs.
Options and futures
Saxo advertises listed options from $0.75 per contract and futures from $1 per contract, subject to local pricing.
IBKR’s published overview lists options at $0.15–$0.65 per contract under IBKR Pro Tiered and $0.65 under Fixed pricing. Futures are listed at $0.25–$0.85 per contract under Tiered and $0.85 under Fixed pricing.
IBKR’s final charge can include exchange, regulatory, clearing and product-specific fees. Therefore, “IBKR options cost $0.65” is an incomplete comparison: that is the published Fixed rate in the overview, not necessarily the all-in cost for every market.
Foreign exchange
FX costs can matter more than stock commissions if you regularly buy foreign securities.
Saxo’s general schedule says currency conversions use the FX spot mid-price plus or minus a markup of 0.25%, subject to the local schedule and account conditions.
IBKR publishes spot-FX commissions of 0.08–0.20 basis points times trade value, with spreads advertised as narrow as one-tenth of a pip. Minimums, currency pair, trade value and pricing schedule affect the final amount.
For frequent currency conversion, IBKR’s direct spot-FX model is usually more attractive. Compare the actual spread, commission and minimum—not just the advertised rate.

Fractional shares and recurring investing
Interactive Brokers
IBKR Recurring Investments lets eligible customers select U.S., Canadian and European shares, choose a start date, and schedule investments daily, weekly or monthly. The feature uses fractional shares and executes soon after market open on the selected schedule.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fractional availability remains security-specific. It does not mean every stock, ETF or market can be purchased fractionally.
Saxo
Saxo AutoInvest currently does not support fractional investing. It buys whole units and rounds the order down.
The documented schedule is the fifth of each month, around 11:00 a.m. CET. If that date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, the purchase moves to the next business day. Saxo says there is no setup fee, monthly fee or minimum deposit, although selling can incur commission, conversion charges and taxes.
This creates a practical difference. If you contribute $100 and the selected ETF costs $125, Saxo can leave the contribution uninvested rather than buy part of a unit. That is not necessarily an order failure; it is the documented result of rounding down to whole units. Positions also cannot be transferred into or out of the AutoInvest account.
For small, regular contributions, IBKR has the clear structural advantage.
Market data
IBKR provides free real-time streaming data for U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs from Cboe One and IEX, described as non-consolidated data. It also provides delayed data where available and up to 100 free snapshot quotes per month.
Non-consolidated data does not show the consolidated national best bid and offer across all U.S. exchanges. Traders who need consolidated or exchange-specific real-time data may need to pay for a subscription. Subscriptions are billed per user, partial months can be charged at the full monthly rate, and IBKR generally requires at least $500 of equity for an individual account to maintain market-data and research subscriptions in addition to the subscription cost.
To manage IBKR market data:
- Log in to Client Portal.
- Click “Welcome {Your Name}” in the top-right corner.
- Select “Settings.”
- Under User Settings, choose “Market Data Subscriptions.”
- Click the blue “Configure” gear icon next to the subscriptions.
- Check or uncheck the required data package.
- Click “Continue” through the review and acknowledgement screens.
Saxo’s advanced platform supports Level 2 and time-and-sales tools, but the relevant exchange-data subscriptions may cost extra. SaxoInvestor is better suited to investors who do not need a detailed market-data setup.
Order types and execution tools
Saxo supports market, limit, stop, take-profit, trailing stop, stop-limit, OCO and algorithmic orders, along with multiple order durations and conditional orders.
IBKR provides a broader technical toolkit. Depending on the platform and product, it supports bracket orders, trailing and stop orders, hidden and iceberg orders, conditional orders, spread orders, volatility orders and algorithmic orders. IBKR describes TWS as supporting more than 50 order types, while another IBKR Campus page describes more than 100 order types, algorithms, attributes and time-in-force options across its platforms. Those figures use different counting methods and should not be treated as a direct platform comparison.
For a long-term investor placing occasional market or limit orders, both brokers offer more than enough functionality. For an options trader, algorithmic trader or API user, IBKR offers the deeper environment—but also demands more setup and learning.

Common failure modes
Why Saxo orders may be rejected
Saxo documents several reasons for rejected orders:
- Insufficient available cash or margin.
- Cash reserved for pending orders.
- A pre-trade cash buffer for commissions, fees or market gaps.
- A missing Key Information Document (KID) for certain retail products.
- Retail restrictions on particular securities or products.
- Exposure limits for the instrument or client.
- Out-of-date client information.
- An OTC security marked “Reduce only.”
- A market order submitted while the market is closed.
For an exposure-limit issue, inspect the instrument’s Trading Conditions tab. Another documented problem is “Price is on wrong side of market” when a limit order is submitted close to the spread and the quote moves before the order reaches the market. Saxo identifies Quick Trade and a 0.00% price tolerance as factors that can make this more likely.
Why IBKR may show data but reject a trade
IBKR separates trading permissions, market-data subscriptions, research subscriptions, API access and product eligibility. A symbol appearing in TWS does not prove that you can trade it. You may be seeing delayed data, lack the required permission, or need to enable a market-data subscription separately.
For API users, IBKR says most securities require a Level 1 market-data subscription, API market-data access must be enabled, demo accounts cannot subscribe to data, and the account generally must be IBKR Pro with at least $500 in addition to subscription costs.
Cash interest and margin
IBKR’s rates vary with currency, account NAV, cash balance, account segment, Lite or Pro status and margin-loan tier. For USD cash, its published schedule says the first $10,000 of uninvested cash earns no interest. Interest accrues daily and is posted monthly on the third business day of the following month.

The rates are blended across tiers rather than applying one rate to the entire loan.
Saxo’s deposit interest depends on account tier, currency, net free equity and country of residence. It calculates interest daily and settles it monthly, within seven business days after month-end. Saxo also warns that negative net free equity can result in an overdraft rate.
Do not compare a single headline margin number without specifying currency, balance, account tier and date. Rates change, and the two brokers use different schedules.
Securities lending
IBKR’s Stock Yield Enhancement Program is available to eligible customers with an approved margin account or a cash account with liquid net worth above $25,000 or equivalent. IBKR says it pays clients 50% of a market-based lending rate on eligible shares.
Shares on loan may not receive the same SIPC treatment while lent, although IBKR says collateral is provided under the program. Lending income is variable, and tax, dividend and voting treatment can differ.
Saxo also advertises stock lending, but eligibility, compensation and terms depend on the Saxo entity and jurisdiction. Securities lending should be treated as an optional program with risks and changing returns—not guaranteed extra income.

Saxo Bank A/S
For clients of Saxo Bank A/S and specified branches, Saxo says cash deposits are covered by the Danish Depositor and Investor Guarantee Scheme up to €100,000 per depositor. Financial instruments are generally returned to the client. If Saxo cannot return them, the Guarantee Fund may cover losses up to €20,000 per investor.
Interactive Brokers LLC
For eligible U.S. clients of Interactive Brokers LLC, SIPC protection covers securities accounts up to $500,000, including a $250,000 cash sublimit. IBKR says its excess SIPC policy provides an additional $30 million per account, with a $900,000 cash sublimit, subject to a $150 million aggregate limit.

Futures and futures options are not covered by SIPC. Protection schemes address broker failure and missing assets; they do not cover a falling share price, leverage losses, bad investment decisions or market gaps.
Transferring or closing a Saxo account
To begin a Saxo portfolio transfer:
- Open the main menu. On web or desktop it is in the top-right; on mobile it is in the bottom-right.
- Under “Deposits and transfers,” select “Portfolio transfer.”
- Follow the prompts.
To close the account, Saxo says you must first close open positions, cancel standing orders, resolve corporate actions and cover any negative balance. Then open the main menu, select “Close my account,” and follow the prompts. Once the closure request is submitted, you can no longer trade.

- You use options, futures, algorithms or APIs.

- You want stocks, ETFs, bonds, options, futures and other products presented within a bank-style platform.
- You value the applicable Saxo banking and deposit-protection structure.

FAQ
Is Saxo cheaper than Interactive Brokers?
Usually not for cost-sensitive U.S. stock, ETF, FX or active trading. IBKR has $0 commissions for qualifying U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs through IBKR Lite, competitive Pro pricing and a low published spot-FX commission model. Saxo can still be competitive depending on country, account tier, custody charges and the products traded.
Can U.S. residents open a Saxo account?
Do not assume so. Saxo’s public U.K. disclosure says its service is not directed at U.S. citizens, residents or entities. Saxo eligibility depends on the relevant local entity, and U.S. residents should verify availability directly rather than rely on website access.
Recommended Free Tools
Which broker is better for beginners?
SaxoInvestor and IBKR GlobalTrader are both designed to be simpler than their advanced platforms. Saxo may feel more unified, while IBKR offers lower costs and a clear path to more advanced tools. The better choice depends on local availability, fees and whether you expect to need fractional recurring investments.
Does Saxo offer fractional shares?
Saxo’s current AutoInvest documentation says it does not support fractional investing and rounds down to whole units. A contribution smaller than the price of one share or ETF unit can therefore remain partly or entirely in cash.
Does Interactive Brokers have free real-time market data?
Yes, for U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs IBKR provides free non-consolidated real-time streaming data from Cboe One and IEX, plus delayed data where available and up to 100 free snapshot quotes monthly. Consolidated or exchange-specific feeds may require paid subscriptions.
Which broker is better for options and futures?
Interactive Brokers is generally the stronger choice for active options and futures traders because of its published pricing, order types, algorithms, TWS and API access. Saxo may be preferable if you want those products inside a more integrated platform and your local Saxo pricing is acceptable.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Are my investments protected if either broker fails?
Protection depends on the legal entity, product and account classification. Saxo Bank A/S describes Danish protection of deposits up to €100,000 and investor losses up to €20,000 in specified circumstances. Eligible U.S. IBKR LLC accounts receive SIPC protection up to $500,000, including a $250,000 cash sublimit. Neither regime protects against market losses.
The Bottom Line
For most cost-conscious, U.S.-based, multi-market or technically advanced investors, Interactive Brokers is the better all-round broker. Its strongest advantages are U.S. stock and ETF pricing, fractional recurring investments, foreign-exchange execution, margin pricing, advanced order tools and API access.
Saxo is a compelling alternative for an eligible non-U.S. investor who values a more integrated interface, broad product presentation and the applicable bank-based protection framework more than the lowest possible trading cost.
The final decision should start with jurisdiction, not commission. Confirm the legal entity, local fee schedule, available products, tax treatment and investor-protection regime before transferring money or securities.
