Neither account is automatically better. A savings account is often the simpler home for emergency cash and infrequent withdrawals. A money market account may offer a higher variable APY plus checks or a debit card, but it can require a larger balance and restrict some transactions. The right choice depends on the specific account disclosure, your access needs, fees, and how much of your balance is insured.
The short answer
Choose a savings account when you want straightforward, low-cost storage for money you do not spend every day. Choose a money market account when a particular offer pays enough more to justify its minimums and fees, and you value check-writing, debit-card, or broader cash access. Compare actual accounts rather than relying on the account label: rates, balance requirements, transaction rules, and insurance can differ materially from one institution to another.

| Question | Savings account | Money market account |
|---|---|---|
| Typical purpose | Emergency savings and infrequent purchases | Cash that may need a higher rate or more payment access |
| Rate tendency | Varies by institution and can be variable | CFPB says these accounts tend to pay higher rates than other savings accounts, but no particular account is guaranteed to do so |
| Payment access | Usually transfers and withdrawals; some accounts provide a card or ATM access | May include checks or a debit card, alongside electronic and ATM access |
| Balance and fees | May have opening, minimum-balance, or excess-use fees | May require a minimum deposit or balance and may charge similar fees |
| Deposit insurance | Coverage depends on the bank or credit union and ownership category | FDIC or NCUA coverage up to $250,000 for deposits held by the same owner or owners, subject to aggregate coverage rules |
What a savings account is
A savings account is a bank or credit-union deposit account designed for holding money rather than handling routine purchases. You generally add money by direct deposit, electronic transfer, cash deposit, or check, then move it out when an emergency or planned expense arises. The institution sets the interest rate, and that rate may change when the account is variable-rate.

Savings accounts are not identical. One provider may waive a monthly fee only after you keep a stated balance; another may have no monthly fee but pay a lower APY. Some offer an ATM card, while others require transfers to a linked checking account before you can spend. Read the account agreement and fee schedule instead of assuming that every savings account follows the same rules.

How savings-account transaction limits work
Current Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance says institutions may set their own withdrawal or transfer limits. A provider may charge an excess-use fee, reject a transaction, convert the account, or take another action described in its terms. It may also charge a fee when your balance falls below a stated minimum. The old blanket statement that federal law universally limits every savings account to six withdrawals per month is not an accurate description of current CFPB consumer guidance.
For day-to-day bills, CFPB guidance suggests using checking rather than relying on a savings account. Reserve savings for emergencies, planned goals, or purchases you make infrequently, and verify the exact limits before scheduling recurring transfers.
What a money market account is
A money market account is also a bank or credit-union deposit account. It is not a brokerage investment. CFPB describes money market accounts as generally offering higher interest rates than other savings accounts, although the rate on any specific account can be lower than a competing savings account or can change after you open it.
Money market accounts may combine savings-style interest with payment features. Depending on the institution, you might receive checks, a debit card, ATM access, electronic transfers, or some combination. That convenience does not mean unlimited use. CFPB says transactions by check, debit card, or electronic transfer are usually limited, while ATM and certain other withdrawal routes are usually unlimited; the provider’s current agreement controls.
Money market account versus money market mutual fund
These names are easy to confuse but describe different products. A money market account is a deposit account at a bank or credit union. A money market mutual fund is an investment product. As the CFPB explains: “A money market mutual fund account is considered an investment, and it is not a savings or checking account, even though some money market funds allow you to write checks.”
A deposit account’s insurance and withdrawal rules come from the bank or credit union. A mutual fund is governed by investment-account rules and is not covered by FDIC or NCUA deposit insurance merely because it uses the word “money market” or offers check-writing. Confirm the product type before moving cash.

The comparison that actually determines which is better
1. APY and the possibility of a rate change
Compare the current annual percentage yield, not just the nominal interest rate. APY incorporates compounding and is the figure intended for account-to-account comparison. Ask whether the rate is fixed or variable, what event can change it, and whether a promotional rate expires. A high introductory APY can become uncompetitive when the promotion ends.
No single national “best” or average rate is established here. Rates move, and institutions price accounts differently. Record the date you checked the APY and read the Truth in Savings disclosure that accompanies the offer.
2. Opening, minimum-balance, and APY-earning requirements
Separate three questions that are often presented as one minimum: How much is needed to open the account? How much must remain to avoid a monthly fee? How much must remain to earn the advertised APY? A money market account may require a larger opening deposit or ongoing balance than a basic savings account. A savings account may also impose a minimum, so compare the actual dollar thresholds.
If your balance could fall below a threshold, calculate the cost before opening. A fee can erase the extra interest from a higher APY, especially when the account balance is modest or the higher rate applies only above a tier.
3. Monthly, excess-use, and other fees
Look for a monthly maintenance fee, minimum-balance fee, paper-statement fee, out-of-network ATM fee, overdraft or returned-item fee, and any charge for exceeding a withdrawal or transfer limit. CFPB guidance specifically notes that savings institutions may charge fees for exceeding their limits or falling below a minimum balance.

For a money market account, check whether checks or debit-card transactions have per-item fees, whether ATM fees are reimbursed, and whether a fee applies when a transaction is refused. A fee schedule is more useful than a headline rate because it shows the cost of using the features you actually need.

4. Access: checks, cards, transfers, ATMs, and branches
List the ways you expect to use the cash, then confirm each one in the account terms:
- Checks: Some money market accounts provide check-writing; many savings accounts do not. Ask about check limits, minimum check amounts, and stop-payment charges.
- Debit card: A card can make a money market account convenient for occasional purchases, but debit transactions may count toward the account’s stated limit.
- Electronic transfers: Confirm inbound and outbound limits, cutoff times, linked-account requirements, and transfer fees.
- ATMs: Verify availability, daily withdrawal limits, surcharge reimbursements, and whether ATM withdrawals are treated differently from checks or electronic transfers.
- In-person service: If you deposit cash or need branch support, confirm branch locations, hours, and any teller-service restrictions.
More access is useful only if you can use it without breaching the account’s limits. If you expect frequent spending, a checking account may be a better operating account, with savings or money market funds used as the reserve.
5. Deposit insurance and ownership aggregation
CFPB states that a money market account at an insured bank or credit union is insured by the FDIC or NCUA up to $250,000 for deposits held by the same owner or owners. Coverage applies across your eligible deposits in the same ownership category, not separately to every account name. For example, opening several accounts under the same ownership does not automatically create a separate $250,000 limit for each one.

A money market mutual fund does not become an insured deposit account simply because it holds short-term instruments or permits checks.
6. Eligibility and account restrictions
Some institutions restrict eligibility by membership, residence, employment, age, or relationship with the institution. Others make an account available nationally but require online enrollment or a linked checking account. Confirm eligibility before comparing rates, and check whether the advertised APY is available to every customer or only to a specified tier.
What Truth in Savings disclosures tell you
Regulation DD, also called Truth in Savings, requires covered institutions to disclose information that makes deposit accounts comparable. CFPB’s account-disclosure provision requires the institution to state the interest rate and APY, explain variable-rate conditions, identify relevant minimum-balance requirements, disclose fees, and describe transaction limitations. The disclosure must be provided before the account is opened, subject to the rule’s delivery provisions.

Use the disclosure as a checklist:
- Find the APY and the interest rate, and note whether either can change.
- Read the balance method and the dollar amount required to earn the APY or avoid a fee.
- Identify every recurring and event-based fee, including excess-transaction charges.
- Read the section on checks, cards, transfers, ATM withdrawals, and any numerical limits.
- Confirm the insurer and the ownership category that will determine coverage.
- Save a copy or screenshot showing the terms in effect when you open the account.
When an advertisement and the disclosure appear inconsistent, treat the disclosure and the account agreement as the documents to resolve the difference. Ask the institution for a written explanation before funding the account.

- Set the cash purpose. Separate money needed for bills this month, an emergency reserve, a near-term purchase, and cash that can remain untouched. Money for routine payments generally belongs in checking or another transaction account.
- Estimate your access frequency. Count likely checks, card purchases, transfers, and ATM withdrawals in a typical month. Include irregular events such as an insurance deductible or annual tax payment.
- Set a balance floor. Decide the minimum amount you can reliably keep in the account. Compare that number with each provider’s opening, fee-waiver, and APY-earning requirements.
- Gather current disclosures. For each candidate, record the APY, variable-rate language, fees, transaction limits, access methods, eligibility rules, and insurance status on the same date.
- Calculate usable interest. Estimate interest from the APY on your expected balance, then subtract fees you are likely to incur. A nominally higher APY is not better if a minimum-balance fee or excess-use charge consumes the difference.
- Test the access plan. Verify that the account supports the exact payment or withdrawal method you need. Do not assume that a debit card, checks, or unlimited ATM use comes with every money market account.
- Check aggregate insurance. Add the proposed deposit to your other deposits at the same institution and ownership category. Review FDIC or NCUA coverage before exceeding the applicable limit.
- Recheck after opening. Variable APYs, fee schedules, and transaction rules can change. Read notices and review statements so that a previously free account does not become costly through changed terms or usage.
Which account fits common situations?
You need an emergency fund and rarely withdraw
A savings account is often the practical default when you want a simple reserve and do not need checks or a debit card. A money market account can still win if its current APY is meaningfully higher after fees and you can maintain its required balance. Keep enough separation from checking that you are less tempted to spend the reserve, while retaining a transfer method that works during an emergency.
You expect occasional large payments
A money market account may be useful when you want to write a check for a tuition bill, tax payment, or contractor invoice without moving the entire balance to checking first. Confirm the number of permitted checks and whether the transaction counts toward a monthly limit. If the payment schedule is frequent, a checking account may avoid repeated-limit problems.
You need frequent spending or transfers
Do not choose a money market account solely because it offers a card. Check and debit transactions may be limited, and fees can apply after the limit is reached. Use checking for routine spending, then transfer only the amount needed to preserve the savings or money market account’s purpose.
You hold more than $250,000 in cash
Review deposit insurance by institution and ownership category before consolidating funds. Splitting deposits among insured institutions or using different eligible ownership categories may affect coverage, but the rules are specific. Use the official FDIC or NCUA tools or ask the institution’s deposit-insurance specialist; do not infer coverage from the number of account titles.
You are comparing a bank account with a money market fund
Stop and identify the product. Ask whether the statement comes from a bank or credit union deposit system or from a brokerage account. Then compare insurance, access, tax reporting, liquidity rules, and investment risk under the correct product category. Check-writing alone does not tell you which product you have.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by APY alone: Pair the rate with minimums, fees, and the period for which the rate is available.
- Assuming “money market” means insured cash: Verify that the account is a bank or credit-union deposit account, not a mutual fund.
- Expecting unlimited transactions: Read the institution’s current limits for checks, cards, and electronic transfers; do not rely on an outdated six-withdrawal rule.
- Ignoring ownership aggregation: Add balances across accounts at the same institution and ownership category when reviewing the $250,000 insurance limit.
- Keeping spending money in a reserve account: Frequent use can trigger limits or fees. Keep day-to-day transactions in checking.
- Failing to save the disclosure: Retain the terms and fee schedule from the date you opened the account so you can identify later changes.
- Overlooking eligibility: A rate may be unavailable if you do not meet membership, location, or relationship requirements.
Questions to ask before opening either account
Can I write checks from a money market account?
Sometimes. Check-writing is a feature offered by some money market accounts, not a universal right. Ask how many checks are allowed, whether each check counts toward a transaction limit, and what fees apply.
Can a savings account charge me for withdrawals?
Yes. CFPB guidance says an institution may set withdrawal or transfer limits and charge fees for exceeding them. A minimum-balance shortfall can also trigger a fee. The exact amount and trigger must appear in the account’s disclosures or fee schedule.
Is a higher money market APY guaranteed?
No. CFPB describes money market accounts as tending to pay higher rates than other savings accounts, but any account’s APY may be variable and can change. Compare the current disclosure and review future rate notices.

Bank and credit-union deposit accounts may be insured by the FDIC or NCUA, subject to the applicable ownership category and aggregate limits. Confirm the institution’s insurer. A money market mutual fund is an investment and is not a deposit account.
Bottom line for your cash decision
Start with the account’s real disclosure, not its name. A savings account usually suits an emergency reserve that you touch rarely. A money market account is worth considering when its APY, after fees and balance requirements, compensates you for any transaction limits and gives you access you will actually use. Keep routine spending in checking, verify FDIC or NCUA coverage up to the $250,000 ownership-based limit, and revisit variable rates and terms whenever the institution sends a change notice.
