ALDI is the likely price leader for a defined, cook-at-home Thanksgiving basket. Its U.S. 2026 seasonal offer advertises a retailer-selected meal for 10 people at under $39, or under $3.90 per person before you add anything outside that basket. Costco’s published 2026 offer is a different product: a prepared 30-pound turkey dinner for eight at $199.99 after a $70 discount, about $25 per person. Sam’s Club publishes Thanksgiving categories and prepared foods, but its public page does not provide one complete, comparable basket total.
The fair choice depends on what you are buying. Compare ingredients with ingredients, or heat-and-serve meals with heat-and-serve meals; then account for membership, package sizes, leftovers, travel and the value of your cooking time.

That table does not mean an ALDI dinner will always cost less than every possible Sam’s Club or Costco cart. It means ALDI has published the clearest low-price claim for a specified, cook-at-home basket. Warehouse clubs can be competitive when you need large quantities, buy other household goods during the same trip, or place a high value on avoiding preparation.

Ingredients versus a finished meal
An ingredient basket includes a turkey, vegetables, potatoes, stuffing components and other sides that still require thawing, chopping, cooking and serving. A prepared dinner bundles the food and much of the labor. The $199.99 Costco listing is therefore a convenience price, not a competing ingredient-basket quote.

Servings, package sizes and usable portions
“Serves 10” and “30 pounds serving eight” are not identical measures. A warehouse package can have a lower unit price while forcing you to buy more than the table needs. The extra food may be welcome as leftovers, or it may become waste. Record the edible amount you expect to use, not just the package weight.
Extras that a retailer-designed basket may omit
ALDI’s under-$39 and $40 figures describe the retailer’s selected spread. Your household may want appetizers, beverages, gravy, cranberry sauce, desserts, specialty seasonings, vegetarian entrées or additional butter and cream. Price those separately before promising guests a final total. A basket headline is a useful baseline, not a guarantee that every menu variation fits the same amount.
A simple normalization formula
For any store, calculate:
- Checkout cost per guest: total paid divided by the number of people you intend to feed.
- Usable-food cost per guest: the portion of the total that will actually be eaten, after allowing for leftovers and unavoidable waste.
- All-in cost: groceries plus membership allocation, delivery or pickup charges, travel and any separately purchased extras.
Use the same guest count, menu and quality level for all three stores. Otherwise, the cheapest-looking number may simply describe a smaller or easier meal.
ALDI: the strongest low-cost case for cooking at home
What the 2026 offer actually promises
ALDI’s U.S. 2026 Thanksgiving page advertises a meal for 10 at under $39. The page lists the basket, item availability windows and price conditions, which makes the claim more auditable than a general “low prices” slogan. At the maximum stated total, the arithmetic is less than $3.90 per person.
Because the offer is a retailer-designed set, check each item against your own menu. It may not include the exact turkey size, side, dessert or dietary substitute your family expects. The page’s item-specific effective dates and availability windows also matter: an item can be part of the advertised plan yet unavailable at your store on the day you shop.
How the 2025 result provides context
In its Oct. 15, 2025 release, ALDI said shoppers could build “a full spread for 10” for $40, or $4 per person, including turkey and nine sides. CEO Atty McGrath said, “The ALDI commitment to low prices is unwavering and I am thrilled to be able to offer an even more affordable holiday meal than last year.” The 2026 sub-$39 claim is consistent with that direction, but the two figures are separate seasonal offers and should not be treated as a permanent price.

What you still have to do
- Plan thawing and cooking time for the turkey.
- Confirm that your oven, roasting pan and refrigerator can handle the meal.
- Buy any missing condiments, drinks, appetizers or desserts.
- Check package sizes so a low shelf price does not leave you short on portions.
ALDI has no paid membership requirement, so there is no annual fee to allocate to this meal. That advantage is especially meaningful if Thanksgiving is your only large holiday shop. The trade-off is that you may need a second stop for a specialty brand, a particular dietary product or an item that is temporarily out of stock.
Costco: a premium convenience option with a clear prepared-meal price
What the published dinner includes
Costco’s 2026 listing shows a prepared 30-pound turkey dinner serving eight for $199.99 after a $70 discount. Divided evenly, that is about $25 per guest. It is designed for a buyer who wants a large, ready-to-heat meal rather than a cart of raw ingredients and separate recipes.
The $70 reduction is part of the displayed promotional price. Verify the current offer, order deadline and fulfillment terms before relying on it; seasonal promotions can end or change. Costco also states that online prices may be higher than warehouse prices and that prices can vary by warehouse.
Separately priced sides
The same published material lists a pumpkin pie at $6.80 and 10 pounds of potatoes at $6.69. Those examples show why an advertised dinner total is not automatically the final holiday bill. Add every side, dessert, beverage and dietary replacement your group needs, then divide the expanded total by eight or your actual guest count.
When the premium can be rational
- You have limited time or kitchen capacity and would otherwise pay for catering or takeout.
- You need a large, predictable quantity and are comfortable with the package’s menu.
- You value fewer preparation steps more than the lowest possible grocery total.
- You already hold a Costco membership and will use it for other purchases.
If you are comparing only raw turkey, potatoes, vegetables and stuffing, use a local Costco cart rather than the prepared-dinner listing. The prepared offer cannot establish that Costco is cheaper for ingredients.

What its Thanksgiving page establishes
Sam’s Club’s Thanksgiving page organizes prepared meals, sides and Member’s Mark products, but the retrieved page does not publish one complete basket total for a specified number of guests. Without that total, it is not possible to make a defensible national claim that Sam’s Club is the cheapest.

The page does show individual examples, including ham at $6.97 and a 36-count package of string cheese at $7.27. Those prices can be useful for a household that wants those exact items, but they do not reveal the turkey size, side count, package quantities or final total for a full Thanksgiving menu. Confirm the unit, weight, local availability and current price in your club or online cart.
Where bulk can help
A warehouse pack may lower the per-ounce price of potatoes, drinks, cheese or disposable serving supplies. The saving is real only if you can use the quantity before it spoils, have storage space and do not buy extras simply because the unit price looks attractive. For a 10-person dinner, compare the amount you need with the smallest available package and count the value of leftovers.
Why a local cart is essential
Membership access, club inventory, regional pricing and online fulfillment can all affect the total. Build the same list at Sam’s Club that you build at ALDI and Costco: the same turkey weight, the same number of sides, the same dessert and the same dietary requirements. Record the checkout total before deciding.

The 2024 four-item test
Axios Charlotte reported a $10.34 limited basket covering turkey, scratch stuffing, green beans and mashed potatoes. ALDI was the cheapest among eight Charlotte stores in that local test. Desserts were not included, and the warehouse clubs were outside the test, so the result cannot rank Sam’s Club or Costco for a complete Thanksgiving meal. It does support the narrower conclusion that ALDI can be highly competitive on a small ingredient basket in at least one market.
The 30-item grocery comparison
A 2024 Kansas City Star comparison, summarized by Kiplinger, found $68.94 at Sam’s Club versus $81.60 at Costco for 30 grocery items. That is directional evidence about a general grocery cart, not a Thanksgiving basket. It does not control for holiday-specific packages, prepared-food labor, membership costs, travel, substitutions or the exact prices in your market.
Use both comparisons as context, not as a substitute for your own cart. A local, identical list is more relevant than a national reputation or a test conducted in another year and city.

Membership and hidden costs can change the winner
Allocate the annual fee honestly
Sam’s Club and Costco require membership for their standard warehouse-club value proposition; ALDI does not use a paid membership model. If you join solely for Thanksgiving, treat the portion of the annual fee attributable to this trip as part of the meal cost. If you already shop there throughout the year, you may reasonably allocate only a small share to Thanksgiving, but state that assumption when comparing stores.

A practical calculation is:
all-in Thanksgiving cost = grocery total + membership allocation + travel or delivery charges + separately purchased extras
Include travel and time
A warehouse club that is 25 miles away may be more expensive in practice than a nearby grocery store once fuel, parking and an extra hour are considered. Conversely, one warehouse trip that replaces several errands may save time and money. Use your actual route rather than assuming every store has the same access cost.
Price the cost of leftovers
Large packages are a benefit when your household enjoys leftovers, freezes portions or hosts again soon. They are a liability when food spoils. Estimate how many pounds of turkey, potatoes and side dishes you will eat over the following days, and subtract the portion you genuinely expect to use from the effective cost of the holiday meal.

If the lowest ingredient total is the priority
Start with ALDI’s 2026 under-$39 basket for 10, then check the local shelf prices and availability windows. Keep the menu close to the advertised basket if you want the headline total to remain meaningful. Add extras explicitly rather than assuming they are included.
If minimizing cooking and cleanup is the priority
Examine Costco’s prepared dinner or Sam’s Club’s prepared offerings. Compare the final heat-and-serve total, serving count, pickup requirements and reheating instructions. A higher grocery bill can be rational when it replaces hours of preparation or the cost of another prepared-food option.

If you need bulk for a larger gathering
Price the exact package weights at both warehouse clubs and include storage capacity, leftovers and membership. Do not divide a large package by its label serving count without checking whether those portions match your guests’ appetites.
If you have dietary or brand constraints
Make substitutions before comparing totals. A vegetarian entrée, allergy-safe stuffing, halal or kosher turkey, low-sodium sides or a preferred brand can erase the advantage of a retailer-designed basket. Mark each required item as “must have” and each optional item as “nice to have,” then compare only equivalent carts.
If you are trying to stay under $50 for 10 people
ALDI’s 2026 advertised basket is below that threshold by itself, and the 2025 offer was $40. You can therefore feed 10 on the retailer’s defined menu for less than $50, provided the listed items are available at the stated prices and you do not add substantial extras. Your own menu may cost more; calculate the additions before shopping.
How to run a fair local comparison
- Write one menu. Specify the turkey type and weight, the number of sides, dessert, beverages and any dietary substitutions.
- Set the guest count. Use 10 people, eight people or your actual number consistently across every cart.
- Choose equivalent preparation levels. Compare raw ingredients with raw ingredients, or prepared dinners with prepared dinners.
- Record package sizes. Note pounds, counts and the amount you will use; do not compare a small retail pack with a warehouse case without adjustment.
- Check the local channel. Look at the price in your nearby store or club and separately check online pricing. Costco warns that online and warehouse prices may differ; other retailers can also show channel-specific availability.
- Verify seasonal windows. ALDI’s page gives item-specific effective dates and availability windows. Confirm those dates before planning your shopping trip.
- Add the non-shelf costs. Include membership allocation, delivery or pickup fees, fuel, and any second-store purchases.
- Divide by actual guests. Report both the checkout total and the per-person figure so a large package does not look artificially cheap.
- Save a price record. Screenshot or write down the cart date, store, package size and promotion. Recheck close to Thanksgiving because turkey and side prices can change.
Timing, availability and promotion safeguards
Shop the dates, not just the headline
Seasonal offers are time-limited. ALDI’s 2026 page identifies when individual items become effective and how availability is constrained. A store may sell out or substitute an item even when the promotional page remains online. Costco’s $199.99 prepared dinner is also tied to a displayed discount and an ordering process; check the current listing before paying.
Do not assume online and in-store prices match
Costco specifically notes that online prices may be higher and can vary by warehouse. Compare the channel you will actually use. A delivery convenience charge or higher online price can outweigh a nominal bulk saving.
Build a backup plan
Choose an acceptable substitute for each critical item before shopping. If the advertised turkey, stuffing or potatoes are unavailable, you can price the substitute immediately instead of making an unplanned second trip. Keep the original and substitute totals separate so you know what caused the difference.

- Is your comparison an ingredient meal or a prepared dinner?
- Are all stores being compared for the same number of guests?
- Did you normalize package weights and expected leftovers?
- Did you add desserts, drinks, condiments and dietary replacements?
- Did you include a fair share of any membership fee?

For a basic Thanksgiving assembled from ingredients, use ALDI’s sub-$39-for-10 offer as the starting benchmark and validate the exact local cart. Costco’s published $199.99 dinner is best understood as a convenience purchase for eight, while Sam’s Club requires an item-by-item local comparison because its public Thanksgiving page does not establish one full-basket total.
