Sam’s Club Gas vs. Costco Gas: Which Is Cheaper for You?

There is no defensible nationwide winner. Sam’s Club and Costco set fuel prices locally, so the cheaper option is the nearby station selling the same grade for less on the day you fill up—after you account for membership dues, rewards, driving distance and payment rules. Sam’s Club also warns that an online price may not match the pump price at purchase. Use the method below to calculate your own break-even point instead of relying on a chain-wide claim.

Why a universal answer does not exist

Gasoline prices vary by city, state, tax rate, wholesale supply and competition around each warehouse. Two clubs from the same chain can post different prices, and the difference between Sam’s Club and Costco can change from one day to the next. No official nationwide head-to-head price study or location-independent figure establishes that either chain is always cheaper.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Compare a Sam’s Club station with a Costco station that you could realistically use, on the same date, for the same fuel grade. Record the amount shown at the pump when you buy. Sam’s Club’s online fuel information is useful for scouting, but the company says online prices may not match the price charged at the pump. Costco provides a gasoline locator for finding nearby stations.

Your real cost is more than the sign price. A lower per-gallon price can disappear if you drive several extra miles, wait in a longer line, buy a membership solely for fuel or use a payment card whose rewards do not apply. The correct question is: Which option lowers my annual fueling cost after all of those factors?

What to compare at each station

  • Location: Choose stations on routes you already travel. A club that requires a special trip may not be cheaper after vehicle costs and time.
  • Fuel grade: Compare regular with regular, premium with premium and diesel with diesel. Do not compare a discounted regular price with the premium grade you actually need.
  • Pump price: Use the price displayed when you purchase. Treat an app or website price as an indication, not a guaranteed transaction price.
  • Availability: Confirm that the grade or diesel you need is sold at both locations. Sam’s Club directs shoppers to its club finder for local fuel prices and available types; Costco offers a gasoline locator.
  • Access: Both chains generally restrict fuel purchases to members, subject to the exceptions described below.
  • Payment and rewards: Check whether your card is accepted and whether its rewards apply to that purchase.
  • Membership fee: Include the annual dues even if you would use other warehouse benefits. If fuel is the only reason for joining, the entire fee must be recovered through fuel savings.

Membership fees that affect the calculation

The official membership pages reviewed in October 2026 list these entry-level and upgraded prices. Membership rates can change, so verify the current amount before joining or renewing.

Chain and tier Annual fee listed What the figure means
Sam’s Club Club $60 Annual fee shown on Sam’s Club’s benefits page accessed October 13, 2026; the page did not expose a publication date.
Sam’s Club Plus $120 Annual fee shown on the same Sam’s Club benefits page; confirm the current rate.
Costco Gold Star $65 Costco’s listed entry membership fee; the fee schedule says the increase took effect September 1, 2024.
Costco Executive $130 Costco’s listed upgraded membership fee; the same September 1, 2024 fee change applies.

The $5 difference between the basic fees is small compared with the price variation between individual stations. Do not choose a chain from the dues alone. The relevant number is the fee for the tier you would actually buy, less any membership value you would use for groceries, household goods or other services.

Calculate the fuel-savings break-even point

Use this estimate before signing up:

Required per-gallon savings = annual membership fee ÷ expected annual gallons purchased at the club.

For example, suppose you would buy 600 gallons per year and are considering a $60 Sam’s Club membership. The membership requires an estimated $0.10 per gallon in savings to break even ($60 ÷ 600 gallons). A $65 Costco Gold Star membership under the same 600-gallon assumption requires about $0.108 per gallon. These are illustrative calculations, not reported fuel prices.

If you buy only 300 gallons annually, the required savings doubles: $0.20 per gallon for a $60 fee and about $0.217 per gallon for a $65 fee. If you already want the membership for nonfuel purchases, assign part of the fee to those benefits and use only the portion you consider attributable to gasoline. Be consistent; otherwise the comparison will make fuel look cheaper than it is.

Include the cost of an extra trip

Estimate the incremental miles caused by choosing one club over the other. Multiply those miles by your vehicle’s fuel consumption and your current fuel cost, then add a value for tolls or parking if applicable. You may also assign a value to your time if the longer route or queue regularly delays you. No official study in the available evidence quantifies those costs, so use your own route and assumptions.

A station that is two cents cheaper but requires a 12-mile detour may cost more overall. Conversely, a club on your commute can remain the better deal even when its posted price is only slightly lower.

How card rewards change the result

Rewards are not automatically included with membership. Sam’s Club advertises 5% Sam’s Cash on gas purchases with the Sam’s Club Mastercard on the first $6,000 per year, then 1%. The offer is tied to that card and its terms; it is not a 5% discount available to every Sam’s Club member. Verify the current terms, eligible purchases and annual cap before relying on the rate.

To model a reward, multiply eligible annual fuel spending by the applicable reward percentage, then subtract any value you would have earned with your alternative card. If you spend $3,600 on fuel and genuinely receive 5% Sam’s Cash, the gross reward would be $180 under that assumption. That example does not establish that every purchase qualifies or that the rate remains unchanged.

Costco’s fuel FAQ identifies accepted payment types but the evidence available here does not establish a universal Costco fuel-reward rate. Use the actual card terms you hold. A card with a high headline percentage may exclude warehouse fuel, impose a cap or require redemption conditions.

Membership access and payment rules

Who may buy fuel

Sam’s Club says an active membership is generally required to purchase fuel, except where local law limits that restriction. Costco says its fuel stations are for members, with an exception for customers using a prepaid Costco Shop Card. A Shop Card exception is different from general public access; confirm the station’s current policy and whether you can obtain and use the card under the applicable membership rules.

Preauthorization holds at Sam’s Club

Sam’s Club’s help information says a card preauthorization of $100 to $150 may apply, with the amount varying by state. The hold typically clears or is replaced by the actual transaction within 24 to 36 hours. If your available credit is tight, this temporary hold can matter even though your final fuel charge is lower. Check with your card issuer if the hold remains beyond the stated window.

Costco payment methods and state exceptions

Costco’s FAQ lists Visa, most PIN debit cards and prepaid Costco Shop Cards as payment methods at its fuel stations. Oregon and New Jersey stations are full-service under state law, so the fueling process differs from the self-service model common elsewhere. Payment acceptance and operating rules can change; check the station’s current signage if you rely on a particular card or service format.

Fuel grade, availability and quality claims

Start with the grade your vehicle requires. If the owner’s manual calls for regular gasoline, paying for premium because it is the only available grade at a particular station can erase any warehouse-club advantage. If your vehicle requires premium or diesel, compare those grades specifically and verify that both locations stock them.

Costco states in its official fuel FAQ: “Our fuels have been certified to meet the TOP TIER™ performance standards.” That is Costco’s statement about its fuel program. The Sam’s Club official pages reviewed for this comparison did not substantiate an equivalent certification claim. The available evidence therefore cannot show that Costco fuel is superior to Sam’s Club fuel, nor that the two fuels perform identically in a controlled test. Choose on verified price, required grade, access and convenience rather than treating the certification statement as a head-to-head quality study.

A repeatable comparison procedure

  1. List realistic stations. Use the Sam’s Club club finder and Costco’s gasoline locator to identify locations near your home, workplace and regular routes.
  2. Choose the exact grade. Write down the grade or diesel type your vehicle uses. If you sometimes buy different grades, run a separate calculation for each.
  3. Check prices on the same day. Record the online indications, then verify the pump price when you arrive. For Sam’s Club, treat the pump figure as final because the online price may differ.
  4. Record gallons. Review several months of receipts or your vehicle’s fuel log to estimate annual gallons. Do not substitute your tank size for annual consumption.
  5. Measure the route. Note extra miles, tolls, likely queue time and whether the stop replaces another trip.
  6. Apply membership dues. Use $60 or $120 for the Sam’s Club tier you would buy, or $65 or $130 for the Costco tier listed above, then verify current rates.
  7. Apply card terms. Add only rewards you are eligible to receive, including caps such as the Sam’s Club Mastercard’s first-$6,000 gas-spend tier.
  8. Compute annual net cost. Multiply each station’s per-gallon price by annual gallons, add incremental travel cost and the membership fee, then subtract applicable rewards and any nonfuel membership value you intentionally allocate.
  9. Recheck over time. Compare several fill-ups rather than one unusually cheap or expensive day. Prices, dues and reward terms are volatile.

Worked comparison with hypothetical prices

Assume a driver buys 600 gallons per year, already has a route passing both clubs and uses regular gasoline. Suppose a Sam’s Club pump is $3.20 per gallon and a Costco pump is $3.24 on the same day. The four-cent Sam’s Club advantage produces $24 in annual gross fuel savings (600 × $0.04). After a $60 Club membership, fuel alone would still be $36 short of covering the fee. If the driver would otherwise buy the Sam’s membership for other purchases, the fuel decision may be favorable; if not, the membership does not break even on that price gap.

Now reverse the prices: Costco is four cents cheaper. The $24 annual gross difference does not cover a $65 Gold Star fee at 600 gallons. At 1,500 gallons per year, the same four-cent gap produces $60, nearly covering the Costco fee before travel costs. These examples demonstrate why annual gallons matter more than a single sign comparison.

Do not present either hypothetical price as a market quote. Replace the assumptions with your pump receipts and route costs.

When Sam’s Club is likely to make financial sense

  • The nearest Sam’s Club is on a route you already drive and consistently posts a meaningful discount for your required grade.
  • You will use the Club or Plus membership for other purchases, reducing the portion of dues assigned to fuel.
  • You qualify for and value the Sam’s Club Mastercard rewards, while staying within the applicable annual gas-spend tiers.
  • The station stocks your grade and its payment process, including any temporary authorization hold, fits your cash-flow needs.

When Costco is likely to make financial sense

  • A nearby Costco repeatedly undercuts the realistic alternative for the grade you buy.
  • You already hold or would use a Gold Star or Executive membership for nonfuel benefits.
  • The station’s location, hours, queue and payment options are more convenient for your regular trips.
  • You specifically value Costco’s stated TOP TIER certification, while recognizing that it is not proof of superiority over Sam’s Club fuel.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Using different grades: A regular-versus-premium comparison is not meaningful.
  • Comparing different dates: A Tuesday price at one chain cannot establish a winner against a Friday price at the other.
  • Trusting an online price as guaranteed: Sam’s Club says its online fuel price may not match the pump.
  • Ignoring dues: A five-cent discount may not recover a membership fee if you buy few gallons.
  • Counting rewards you cannot earn: Card-specific rewards require the qualifying card and compliance with its terms.
  • Assuming certification proves better fuel: Costco’s TOP TIER statement is not an independent comparative test.
  • Forgetting access rules: Membership requirements and the Costco Shop Card exception affect who can actually purchase.
  • Ignoring detours and queues: A posted discount is not an annual saving until travel and waiting costs are included.

Bottom-line decision rule

Check the same grade at nearby Sam’s Club and Costco stations on the same day, use the pump price, multiply the difference by your annual gallons and subtract the membership, travel and payment costs. Add only rewards you can actually earn. If the resulting annual advantage is small, choose the station that is more convenient; fuel prices can move enough to erase a narrow margin. On the official evidence available, neither chain can be declared universally cheaper.
