Roth Conversion vs. Backdoor Roth IRA: What’s the Difference?

A Roth conversion is a transaction; a Backdoor Roth IRA is a strategy that usually uses that transaction. In a conversion, you move eligible money from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. In the commonly used backdoor strategy, you first make a nondeductible contribution to a traditional IRA and then convert that amount to a Roth IRA. The conversion follows the same IRS rules either way, including income-tax treatment, Form 8606 reporting and the aggregation of other traditional IRA balances.

The distinction matters because the annual IRA contribution limit applies to the contribution step, not to the conversion itself. Untaxed traditional IRA money converted during the year is generally included in that year’s gross income, while documented nondeductible basis is excluded. Your traditional IRA balances at year-end can determine how much of a backdoor conversion is taxable.

Roth conversion and Backdoor Roth IRA are not the same thing

The terms describe different parts of the process:

  • Roth conversion: a transaction that moves eligible assets from a traditional IRA into a Roth IRA.
  • Backdoor Roth IRA: an informal name for a sequence that generally combines a nondeductible traditional IRA contribution with a later Roth conversion.

A Backdoor Roth IRA is therefore not a separate account type and does not have a special IRS conversion mechanism. It is a strategy built from ordinary IRA contribution and conversion rules. The IRS describes three ways to convert: receive a distribution and complete a rollover to a Roth IRA within 60 days, make a trustee-to-trustee transfer, or make a same-trustee transfer. These methods are described in IRS Publication 590-A.

Because the backdoor approach uses a conversion, the conversion portion is governed by the same tax, reporting and finality rules as any other Roth conversion. Calling it “backdoor” does not make the transaction tax-free, increase the regular contribution limit or allow you to bypass Form 8606.

How the two approaches differ

Question Roth conversion Backdoor Roth IRA strategy
What it describes A transaction moving traditional IRA assets into a Roth IRA. A sequence that typically starts with a nondeductible traditional IRA contribution and ends with a Roth conversion.
Regular contribution involved? Not necessarily. A conversion transfers existing retirement assets. Yes. The contribution step must satisfy the ordinary IRA contribution rules.
Tax treatment Untaxed traditional IRA amounts converted are generally included in gross income for the conversion year; basis is excluded. The conversion step has the same tax treatment. Other traditional IRA balances can make part of the converted amount taxable.
Annual contribution limit The conversion amount is separate from the annual regular IRA contribution limit. The contribution is subject to the regular limit; the subsequent conversion is not a regular contribution.
Reporting IRS materials direct taxpayers to report conversion amounts on Form 8606. Form 8606 records the nondeductible contribution, basis and conversion-related amounts.
Can it be undone? Conversions for tax years beginning after December 31, 2017, cannot be recharacterized as traditional IRA contributions. The same finality applies to the conversion used in the strategy.

What happens in a regular Roth conversion?

A regular conversion starts with money already held in a traditional IRA. You choose an amount or eligible assets, transfer them to a Roth IRA using one of the IRS-approved methods, and report the transaction for the year in which it occurs.

Taxable and nontaxable portions

Traditional IRA amounts that would have been taxable if distributed generally remain taxable when converted. The taxable amount is generally included in gross income for the conversion year. Any portion representing your basis from nondeductible contributions is not included in gross income, provided that basis is properly tracked and reported.

For example, suppose a traditional IRA contains both deductible contributions and investment growth. Converting part of that account does not isolate the original contributions or allow you to designate only the after-tax dollars as converted. The tax result follows the basis calculation on Form 8606, which considers the relevant traditional IRA values and basis together.

Ways to complete the transfer

  1. 60-day rollover: You receive the traditional IRA distribution and roll it into a Roth IRA within 60 days.
  2. Trustee-to-trustee transfer: The financial institutions transfer the assets directly from the traditional IRA trustee to the Roth IRA trustee.
  3. Same-trustee transfer: The same institution moves the assets from your traditional IRA to your Roth IRA.

The direct-transfer methods generally avoid the practical risk of missing a 60-day deadline. If you use a distribution-and-rollover method, confirm the deadline and deposit requirements with the institutions involved.

Early-distribution penalty and withholding

A properly and timely completed conversion is not subject to the 10% additional tax on early distributions. That does not remove ordinary income tax on the taxable portion. A conversion can increase your gross income enough that you need to review withholding or make estimated tax payments, as Publication 590-A notes.

Required minimum distributions cannot be converted

Amounts required to be distributed for a year, including required minimum distributions, cannot be converted. If you have an RMD obligation, that amount must be handled as required before considering a conversion of additional eligible assets.

How the Backdoor Roth IRA strategy works

The backdoor strategy is usually described as two linked transactions. The first is a regular, nondeductible contribution to a traditional IRA. The second is a conversion of traditional IRA assets to a Roth IRA.

Step 1: Make a nondeductible traditional IRA contribution

You contribute money to a traditional IRA but do not claim a deduction for that contribution. The contribution creates basis—the portion that has already been taxed and should not be taxed again when distributed or converted.

For 2026, the combined maximum for regular contributions to all of your traditional and Roth IRAs is $7,500, or $8,600 if you are age 50 or older, subject to taxable compensation if lower. The figures come from the IRS IRA contribution-limit page. This is a combined limit, not a separate $7,500 allowance for each type of IRA.

Rollover contributions are excluded from that regular-contribution limit. A later Roth conversion is also not a regular annual contribution, so the amount converted does not consume another portion of the $7,500 or $8,600 limit.

Step 2: Convert traditional IRA assets to a Roth IRA

After the nondeductible contribution, you convert the traditional IRA assets to a Roth IRA. The conversion may be completed by a 60-day rollover, trustee-to-trustee transfer or same-trustee transfer. Any investment gain or other untaxed amount that exists before the conversion can be taxable; the fact that the original contribution was nondeductible does not make subsequent growth tax-free at conversion.

The IRS materials distinguish contribution eligibility from conversion treatment. The sources used here do not provide a complete current table of direct Roth IRA contribution income thresholds, so this article does not state one. High income by itself should not be described as a blanket prohibition on Roth conversions; whether a particular taxpayer can contribute directly, convert, or both requires applying the rules for that taxpayer and year.

Step 3: Report both parts

Keep the contribution records and report the nondeductible contribution and conversion using Form 8606 for the applicable tax year. The IRS Instructions for Form 8606 explain how to establish basis and calculate the taxable and nontaxable portions. The IRS also identifies conversion reporting in its IRA frequently asked questions.

Why other traditional IRA balances affect a Backdoor Roth

The most important trap is assuming that converting the newly contributed nondeductible dollars automatically produces a tax-free conversion. Form 8606 does not generally let you select only the after-tax dollars if you also hold other traditional IRA money.

The aggregation calculation

The Form 8606 calculation uses the year-end value of all traditional IRAs, together with relevant outstanding rollovers, when determining the relationship between your basis and the amount converted. The result is often called the “pro-rata rule,” but that nickname can hide the actual process: your nondeductible basis is compared with the total traditional IRA balance used by the form, and the conversion is divided between basis and taxable amounts.

Balances in different traditional IRA accounts do not normally create separate tax silos for this calculation. A person who has one account containing the nondeductible contribution and another account containing pretax money can still have a taxable portion of the conversion.

Illustrative calculation

Consider a simplified example. You contribute $7,500 of nondeductible basis and, by year-end, have $22,500 of other pretax traditional IRA money. The aggregate balance used for the illustration is $30,000, so the basis represents 25% of that amount. If you convert $7,500, the illustrative allocation would be $1,875 of basis and $5,625 of taxable amount. Actual Form 8606 results can differ because the form incorporates the full set of relevant transactions, balances and rollovers for the year.

The example is not a tax forecast; it shows why moving only the newly contributed dollars to a Roth IRA does not, by itself, determine the tax result. Before using the strategy, list every traditional IRA balance that will be relevant at year-end and gather records of prior nondeductible contributions.

Contribution limits and conversion amounts are separate

Confusing these two limits causes many errors.

  • Regular contribution limit: For 2026, $7,500 combined across traditional and Roth IRAs, or $8,600 for age 50 or older, limited to taxable compensation if that is lower.
  • Conversion amount: The amount transferred from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. A conversion is not a regular contribution and is not counted against the annual regular-contribution limit.
  • Rollover contribution: The IRS excludes rollover contributions from the regular contribution limit.

The contribution limit applies to the amount you put into an IRA as a regular contribution. It does not create a ceiling on the amount of existing traditional IRA assets that can be converted, although income-tax consequences and other rules still apply.

Reporting a conversion and preserving your basis

Form 8606 is the central record for nondeductible IRA basis and conversion reporting. Use the instructions for the tax year involved; the currently linked instructions are for 2025 reporting and should not be treated as a substitute for instructions issued for a different year.

Records to keep

  • The date and amount of each nondeductible traditional IRA contribution.
  • Confirmation that the contribution was not deducted.
  • Statements showing the traditional IRA balance and the amount converted.
  • Records of earlier Forms 8606 and any remaining basis.
  • Documentation of rollovers that could affect the year-end calculation.

Basis can carry from one year to the next. Losing the paperwork can cause you to report too much taxable income later, so retain the forms and account statements with your tax records.

Use the correct tax year

A conversion is reported for the calendar year in which it occurs. The contribution and conversion may be associated with different tax-year decisions, so check the applicable contribution deadline and reporting instructions rather than assuming both transactions belong to the same tax year. The IRS forms and instructions control the entries.

Conversions generally cannot be reversed

For tax years beginning after December 31, 2017, a Roth conversion cannot be recharacterized as a traditional IRA contribution. In practical terms, a market decline after the conversion does not give you a simple undo button. This differs from older explanations that suggest a conversion can be reversed after the fact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the transaction is generally final, decide how much to convert only after considering the taxable income, available cash for tax payments, investment allocation and your other IRA balances. If a conversion is entered incorrectly, contact the financial institution and a qualified tax professional promptly; do not assume a recharacterization is available.

When a conversion may create a cash-flow problem

The taxable part of a conversion increases gross income for that year. That increase can affect how much tax you need to pay during the year, even though the transaction itself moved retirement assets rather than cash to your bank account.

  • Estimate the taxable portion before submitting the conversion.
  • Decide whether to increase wage withholding or make estimated tax payments.
  • Avoid using part of the IRA distribution to pay the tax unless you understand the consequences, because that amount would not be transferred to the Roth IRA.
  • Set aside cash for the tax bill so the conversion does not force an unwanted sale of investments.

Publication 590-A specifically warns that taxpayers may need to adjust withholding or make estimated payments when a conversion increases gross income. The correct amount depends on your entire tax return, not just the IRA transaction.

Common mistakes and how to prevent them

Calling the strategy a special type of IRA

There is no separate “backdoor” account. Open and title the traditional and Roth IRAs normally, then document the contribution and conversion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Claiming a deduction for the contribution

A backdoor strategy normally relies on a nondeductible contribution. Claiming a deduction would change the basis and tax calculation. Review the contribution designation and your tax return before filing.

Ignoring old IRA balances

List all traditional IRA balances and relevant rollovers that will be included in the Form 8606 calculation. Separate account registrations do not necessarily separate the tax calculation.

Failing to file Form 8606

Brokerage statements do not replace the form. Follow the applicable Form 8606 instructions to report the nondeductible contribution, basis and conversion.

Assuming the conversion uses the contribution limit

The regular contribution limit covers regular contributions, not conversions. Treat the two transactions as separate for limit purposes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Converting an RMD

An amount required to be distributed for the year cannot be converted. Complete the required distribution as directed before evaluating any additional conversion.

Using an outdated recharacterization explanation

Post-2017 conversions generally cannot be switched back to traditional IRA contributions. Do not rely on older articles that describe a routine reversal after a market drop.

A practical decision and documentation checklist

  1. Identify the transaction. Decide whether you are moving existing traditional IRA money, making a nondeductible contribution followed by a conversion, or doing both.
  2. Check the regular contribution limit. For 2026, total regular traditional and Roth IRA contributions cannot exceed $7,500, or $8,600 at age 50 or older, and cannot exceed taxable compensation if that is lower.
  3. Inventory traditional IRA balances. Include each traditional IRA and relevant outstanding rollover when estimating the Form 8606 allocation.
  4. Separate basis from pretax money. Gather prior Forms 8606 and contribution records so existing basis is not lost.
  5. Choose a transfer method. Compare a 60-day rollover with a trustee-to-trustee or same-trustee transfer, paying attention to deadlines and operational instructions.
  6. Check for an RMD. Required distributions for the year cannot be converted.
  7. Estimate the tax and payment timing. Plan withholding or estimated payments for any taxable conversion amount.
  8. Complete the conversion only after reviewing the numbers. Remember that a post-2017 conversion generally cannot be recharacterized.
  9. File the applicable Form 8606. Report the nondeductible contribution, basis and conversion-related amounts using that year’s instructions.
  10. Retain the records. Keep confirmations, year-end statements and Forms 8606 for future basis calculations.

Which approach answers which need?

You already have pretax money in a traditional IRA

A regular Roth conversion directly addresses the decision to move some of that pretax money into a Roth IRA. The taxable amount depends on the portion converted and any basis, and the transaction may increase your income for the year.

You want to place a new nondeductible contribution in a Roth IRA

The backdoor strategy adds a contribution step before the conversion. The contribution must fit the regular IRA limit, and the conversion must still be analyzed with every other traditional IRA balance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You have no other traditional IRA balance

With no other balance relevant to the Form 8606 calculation, the contribution and conversion may produce little or no taxable amount apart from earnings or other untaxed changes before conversion. You still must report the transactions and preserve the basis record.

You have substantial other traditional IRA balances

The aggregation calculation may make part of a backdoor conversion taxable. Consider the Form 8606 result and the income impact before moving money; the backdoor label does not remove the tax created by pretax balances.

Bottom line for choosing between them

Choose the description that matches the action: a Roth conversion is the transfer itself, while a Backdoor Roth IRA is a contribution-plus-conversion strategy. Both use the ordinary conversion rules. The regular 2026 IRA contribution limit controls only the contribution step, taxable traditional IRA amounts converted are generally income in the conversion year, and Form 8606 determines how basis and other traditional IRA balances affect the result. Make the transfer with a method the IRS recognizes, account for any RMD first, plan for the tax payment and treat the conversion as generally irreversible.
