Attackers stole 173,600 ETH and 25.5 million USDC from the Ronin Network bridge, which supported the Axie Infinity game. The theft happened on March 23, 2022, but Sky Mavis discovered it six days later after a user was unable to withdraw 5,000 ETH. The widely reported figure of more than $600 million reflects prices when the theft became public—not a fixed value of the stolen tokens.
How much was stolen from Axie Infinity?
The affected system was the Ronin bridge used to move assets in and out of the Axie Infinity ecosystem; the incident was not a direct breach of the game itself. The disclosed amounts were 173,600 ETH and 25.5 million USDC. The token quantities are more precise than any dollar headline because ETH’s market price changed between the theft and its public disclosure.

That timing explains why reports called it a “$600 million” heist even though estimates for the same stolen assets differ. The incident should also not be confused with the separate Poly Network theft in August 2021, which generated another headline near $600 million but involved a different event and recovery history; Fox Business covered that earlier theft.

How did hackers steal from the Ronin bridge?
Elliptic’s incident analysis says the attacker obtained private keys for five of Ronin’s nine validators. That was enough to approve withdrawals from the bridge. Validators are the network’s transaction-approval points, so control of the required number of keys enabled the attacker to make unauthorized withdrawals appear approved.

Sky Mavis described the breach as socially engineered and identified the small validator set as the underlying weakness. In its April 2022 statement, the company said, “The root cause of the breach was the small validator set which made it much easier to compromise the network.” It also said, “The attack was socially engineered, and a thorough investigation is ongoing.” These statements describe the company’s account of the method and weakness; they do not establish a more detailed phishing or recruitment narrative.
Why was the theft discovered six days later?
The theft occurred on March 23, 2022, but Sky Mavis found out on March 29, when a user could not withdraw 5,000 ETH. That delay matters: the breach was not detected at the moment funds left the bridge. The incident illustrates the difference between a transaction being executed and the organization responsible for the bridge recognizing that it was unauthorized.

Who did the U.S. government say was behind the Ronin hack?
On April 14, 2022, the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control added an Ethereum address associated with the stolen funds to its Lazarus Group designation. That is the basis for describing the theft as attributed by the U.S. government to Lazarus Group. It is an official designation, not a court judgment establishing an individual attacker’s identity. Did Sky Mavis reimburse affected users?
Sky Mavis later said it had refilled the bridge and reimbursed affected users using company balance-sheet funds. Reimbursement addressed user losses, but it did not mean every stolen asset had been recovered or every associated shortfall resolved.

In a July 2022 update, the company said 56,000 ETH belonging to the Axie DAO treasury remained undercollateralized while recovery work continued. That figure describes the status reported at that time; the available company update does not establish the later status of that separate treasury amount. Sky Mavis also said its planned $150 million funding round had been reduced to $11 million. The company’s account of the reimbursement and treasury position is in its Ronin Network update.
