Rogers and Fido increased their daily roaming rates on August 7, 2025—not in August 2026. The U.S. rate rose from $14 to $16 per day, while the international rate rose from $16 to $18 per day. Current carrier pages checked August 18, 2026, still list those rates.
For a multi-day trip, a Travel Pass can be substantially cheaper than paying the daily rate. However, the right choice depends on the destination, number of usage days, plan eligibility, data needs and whether roaming is already included in your wireless plan.

What changed
The increase was reported on July 14, 2025, and took effect August 7, 2025. It applied to the standard daily roaming rates associated with Rogers Roam Like Home and Fido Roam:

| International destinations | $16 per day | $18 per day | $2 |
The original announcement also introduced multi-day Travel Passes. Some promotional prices reported in 2025 are no longer current, so they should not be used to estimate a 2026 trip. The current Rogers roaming page and current Fido roaming page are the better starting points for checking available products.

The change does not automatically mean every Rogers or Fido customer pays more. Some newer plans include U.S. or broader roaming, and eligibility varies by line and destination. Customers should check their plan terms and the welcome message received after connecting abroad.
The 2025 increase was reported by MobileSyrup. The available evidence does not show that the CRTC approved or directly caused the specific increase, although the regulator has examined the affordability of Canadian roaming rates.
How much does the increase add to a trip?
Assuming the daily charge applies on every day and excluding taxes, the change adds $2 for each charged day:

| 30 days | $480 | $540 | $60 |
These are illustrations, not guaranteed bills. Daily roaming is generally triggered by eligible cellular use, and billing is based on calendar days. Fido says a roaming day ends at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, regardless of the traveller’s local time zone. Using the phone around that cutoff can therefore trigger another daily charge.
Current Travel Pass prices
As listed on the Rogers and Fido pages checked August 18, 2026, the available options include:
| Pass | Price |
|---|---|
| U.S. — 3 days | $25 |
| U.S. — 7 days | $50 |
| U.S. — 14 days | $60 |
| U.S. — 30 days | $80 |
| International — 14 days | $100 |
| International — 30 days | $120 |
Destination lists and available passes can change. “International” is not a single uniform coverage area, so check the carrier’s destination lookup before purchasing. Rogers and Fido say Travel Passes can be planned up to 60 days ahead.

Is a Travel Pass cheaper?
For consecutive trips, usually yes. At current listed prices:
| Trip | Daily charges | Comparable pass | Pass difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. — 3 days | $48 | $25 | $23 less |
| U.S. — 7 days | $112 | $50 | $62 less |
| U.S. — 14 days | $224 | $60 | $164 less |
| U.S. — 30 days | $480 | $80 | $400 less |
| International — 14 days | $252 | $100 | $152 less |
| International — 30 days | $540 | $120 | $420 less |
A daily option can still make sense for a one-day stopover, one or two scattered usage days, or a trip where you will keep cellular service off most of the time. A pass is generally the better financial choice when you expect regular use over several consecutive days and the destination is covered.
What roaming normally includes
Eligible Rogers and Fido roaming products generally let customers use the talk, text and data allowances of their Canadian plan in covered destinations. That does not mean every type of use is included.
- Confirm that your specific plan and line are eligible.
- Check that every destination on the itinerary is covered.
- Verify whether your Canadian data allowance applies abroad and whether hotspot use is permitted.
- Check rules for premium messages and calls to countries outside the one you are visiting.
- Confirm whether your plan is prepaid or otherwise excluded.
- Review the applicable terms in the carrier’s welcome text.
A call from France to Canada may be included under a roaming product, while a call from France to a third country may incur international long-distance charges. Wi-Fi is not automatically a shield: Fido warns that Wi-Fi Calling to non-Canadian numbers while abroad can still create roaming or long-distance charges.
How to prepare before travelling
- Use the Rogers or Fido destination lookup to confirm coverage and the applicable product.
- Check your plan’s roaming eligibility and whether roaming is already included.
- Rogers customers can text
TRAVELto222to confirm enrollment. - Fido customers can text
ROAMto222to confirm enrollment. - Buy a Travel Pass through the carrier’s account portal if it is the better option.
- After arrival, enable data roaming only after confirming the applicable terms and rates.
- Turn off background app refresh, cloud backups and other unnecessary data use.
For Fido, the account path for a pass is My Account → Manage add-ons, followed by selecting the desired line. Rogers and Fido also send a welcome message when the phone connects abroad. Treat that message as an important final check of the applicable rates.
Watch for these expensive edge cases
Crossing countries on the same day
Fido says that using the phone in the U.S. and then in another Fido Roam destination on the same calendar day can result in both the $16 U.S. fee and the $18 international fee. This can matter on road trips, international connections and itineraries that move between regions.

Cruise ships
A ship’s cellular service may connect through a satellite network rather than a land-based partner. A normal U.S. or international roaming product may not cover it.
Rogers and Fido offer cruise-related products, but passengers should verify that their ship is eligible. Fido says high-speed cruise data is limited to 1GB per 24 hours, after which speeds may be reduced to up to 512 Kbps. U.S. roaming can also create an additional daily charge on a day when the customer uses an eligible cruise network.
If you do not have cruise coverage, put the phone in airplane mode while at sea and use the ship’s Wi-Fi. Check the device again when entering port, because a port call can create a separate land-based roaming charge.
Background data
Push email, automatic photo backups, app updates, background refresh and Wi-Fi Assist can use roaming data without an obvious action by the traveller. Disable or restrict these features before departure.

A plan with roaming included
Frequent travellers should compare a plan with included U.S. or international roaming against repeated daily fees and passes. Include the monthly price difference, data allowance, destinations, hotspot rules, device financing and promotion eligibility in the calculation. A more expensive plan may be worthwhile for frequent travel but poor value for someone taking one trip per year.
Travel eSIM or local SIM
A travel eSIM or local SIM can be less expensive for a longer trip, particularly when the traveller mainly needs data. The phone must be unlocked and compatible with the relevant SIM or eSIM.

Triple-cut SIM fits all phones with a SIM tray. Phone must be carrier-unlocked. No registration is required, even if packaging or automated SMS suggests otherwise.

If we cant solve your problem we will refund even after return window is closed - no need to return package. This option is less convenient if you need your Canadian number active for calls, SMS-based two-factor authentication or Canadian customer support. With a third-party eSIM, set it as the primary data SIM and follow the provider’s instructions carefully. Keep the Rogers or Fido line disabled, or configure it so it cannot connect to a roaming network.

Freedom’s Roam Beyond passes start at $30 for 30 days, according to its current support page. In covered destinations, the product includes roaming data, unlimited local and Canada-bound calling, and unlimited global texting, subject to its terms and data limits.
Freedom also offers a travel data eSIM to non-Freedom customers. Its 2025 announcement described it as a no-contract, no-credit-check product with 12-month validity. It may suit an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone used mainly for data, but it is not a universal replacement for a Canadian voice line.
Bell and TELUS
The CRTC identifies Rogers Roam Like Home, Bell Roam Better, TELUS Easy Roam and Videotron’s Traveller Pass as major Canadian fixed-rate roaming products. Competitor terms change, however. Bell’s current support information says its Data Travel Passes ended March 19, 2026, and pay-per-use data roaming ended May 1, 2026. Older comparison articles may therefore be misleading.
How to choose
- One or two usage days: Compare the daily total, especially if the trip includes a short stopover.
- Several consecutive days: Price the relevant Travel Pass before relying on daily roaming.
- Frequent U.S. travel: Compare the annual cost of an included-roaming plan with passes and daily fees.
- Long international travel needing data only: Consider a travel eSIM or local SIM.
- Cruise travel: Buy a cruise-specific product or use airplane mode at sea.
No option is automatically cheapest. The calculation depends on destination, charged days, data consumption, voice requirements, phone compatibility, plan eligibility and whether keeping the Canadian line active is important.

The Rogers and Fido change took effect August 7, 2025: $16 per day in the U.S. and $18 per day internationally. It is not a newly announced August 2026 increase. For most planned, multi-day trips, a current Travel Pass costs less than paying the daily rate, while frequent travellers should compare an included-roaming plan and data-focused travellers should consider an eSIM. Before leaving, confirm the destination, plan terms and cruise coverage, then use the welcome text and account portal as the final authority.
