The ROG Xbox Ally is already available: it launched on October 16, 2025, as a Windows 11 handheld PC built by ASUS in collaboration with Xbox. The base model has a U.S. estimated retail price of $599.99, while the more powerful ROG Xbox Ally X is listed at $999.99.
As of the latest source check on August 18, 2026, both models are being sold through Xbox, ASUS, and participating retailers, although stock, promotions, taxes, and retailer pricing can change. The base Ally is the lower-cost route into Xbox and Windows PC gaming. The Ally X is the performance-focused model. For buyers who mainly use Steam and want a simpler, console-like experience, the Steam Deck OLED remains the better fit.

These are Xbox’s estimated retail prices, not guarantees that every retailer will charge the same amount permanently. Sales, bundles, regional pricing, taxes, and inventory can change the final cost. ASUS’s U.S. product page also shows a $999.99 price signal for the Ally X.
Xbox currently advertises three months of Xbox Game Pass Premium with either model in applicable markets. Eligibility, redemption deadlines, automatic renewal, plan pricing, cloud access, and regional availability apply. Check the offer at checkout rather than treating it as a permanent reduction in the hardware price. The advertised subscription benefit may also be unavailable to customers who have recently subscribed or redeemed a similar promotion.

The ROG Xbox Ally is an ASUS-built handheld PC running Windows 11 Home, with Xbox software designed to make the device easier to use from a controller. It is not a traditional Xbox console and does not run the full Xbox console operating system locally.
That distinction matters financially and technically. The Ally can run native Windows PC games installed from supported stores such as Xbox, Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic, and Battle.net. It can also support Xbox Play Anywhere titles, Xbox Remote Play, and Xbox Cloud Gaming where the relevant game, account, plan, device, and region support them.
It cannot automatically turn every Xbox console game you own into a native handheld game. Xbox console discs do not become playable Windows installations, and a console purchase is not universally transferable to PC. The Xbox experience is an aggregation layer over Windows, not a replacement for Windows.
The full-screen Xbox interface brings together installed games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other PC storefronts. Windows updates, launchers, account logins, compatibility settings, and occasional desktop troubleshooting still exist underneath that interface.
ROG Xbox Ally versus ROG Xbox Ally X
The $400 price difference is not simply a storage upgrade. The Ally X has a stronger processor, more memory, a larger battery, more internal storage, and USB4 connectivity. The base Ally is the value-oriented model; the Ally X is the model intended for demanding games and longer sessions between charges.

The Ally X’s 24GB of memory gives it more headroom for demanding games and background Windows activity. Its 1TB SSD is also more practical after accounting for Windows, launchers, patches, and modern game installations. Both models support microSD storage and internal SSD upgrades, but an SSD upgrade requires opening the device and potentially reinstalling or cloning Windows.
ASUS advertises performance improvements for the Ally X under its own test conditions. That is not the same as an independent, universal frame-rate guarantee. Actual results depend on the game, power mode, resolution, graphics settings, upscaling, drivers, and comparison system. The base Ally should not be casually described as equivalent to the Ally X.
ROG Xbox Ally versus Steam Deck OLED
The most useful Steam comparison is the current Steam Deck OLED, not an unspecified Steam Deck. The two products make different trade-offs: the Ally offers Windows flexibility and Xbox integration, while the Deck emphasizes SteamOS simplicity and a console-like handheld experience.

Valve’s current product page rendered prices of $949 for the 512GB OLED and $949 for the 1TB OLED when checked. It also rendered a 256GB LCD model at $789. Those figures are unusual enough that buyers should verify the live price, model, currency, region, and checkout total directly on Valve’s Steam Deck page. Valve notes that product specifications and availability can change.

Performance
The Ally X has the stronger listed processor and more memory, so it is the more serious performance competitor to premium Windows handhelds. The base Ally is positioned lower in the range and should not be assumed to deliver the same results.
The Steam Deck OLED is not directly comparable from specifications alone. Performance depends on each game’s optimization, wattage, resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate cap, and upscaling method. Claims such as “twice as fast” or “30% faster” require matched, independent testing. ASUS’s own performance claims should be treated as manufacturer testing rather than laboratory results applicable to every game.
Display quality
The Ally models use a 7-inch 1080p IPS panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, 500-nit brightness, and FreeSync Premium. That gives them a higher refresh-rate ceiling and sharper 16:9 resolution than the Deck OLED.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Steam Deck OLED uses a larger 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED display. It has the advantage in contrast, black levels, HDR capability, and the perceived richness of the image. If display quality matters more than resolution and refresh rate, the Deck OLED may be preferable.
Battery and portability
The Ally has a 60Wh battery, the Ally X has an 80Wh battery, and the Steam Deck OLED has a 50Wh battery. Capacity alone does not establish gameplay hours. Processor power limits, screen brightness, refresh rate, frame-rate caps, game engine, graphics settings, and operating-system efficiency all affect runtime.
Valve publishes a 3-to-12-hour estimate for the Steam Deck OLED. Xbox and ASUS do not provide a directly comparable universal runtime figure on the cited specification pages. The Ally X’s larger battery is a meaningful hardware advantage, but it does not guarantee longer battery life in every game if the device is also drawing more power.
Operating system and ease of use
SteamOS is usually the simpler choice for a Steam-first buyer. Its interface is built around game launching, controller navigation, suspend and resume, and console-like settings. The Deck also uses Proton compatibility technology for many Windows games, although compatibility is not universal.
Recommended Free Tools
Windows gives the Ally broader access to PC storefronts and Windows-first services. That includes Game Pass PC workflows, Microsoft Store games, Steam, Epic, Battle.net, and other launchers. The trade-off is more maintenance: Windows updates, launchers, account linking, driver issues, desktop controls, and game-specific controller mappings remain part of ownership.
The right question is not which operating system is universally better. It is whether the buyer values broad Windows compatibility more than a streamlined Steam experience.
Game ownership and Xbox features
“Playing Xbox games” can mean several different things:
- Native Windows PC games: Installed locally from the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Steam, or another PC storefront.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: Supported games can provide cross-device entitlements between Xbox and Windows PC, subject to the title’s eligibility.
- Xbox Remote Play: Streams games from the buyer’s own Xbox console to the handheld over a network.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: Streams supported games from Microsoft’s servers and requires a compatible region, connection, device, and Game Pass plan.
- Third-party launchers: Some games require separate accounts, launchers, online authentication, or anti-cheat support.
Owning an Xbox console game does not automatically mean the game runs natively on the Ally. Conversely, the Ally does not require Game Pass for games bought from Steam, Epic, or other stores.

The Ally’s Xbox-style controls are a natural fit for controller-first games. Both Ally models include two assignable rear buttons, six-axis motion sensing, and HD haptics. The Ally X adds impulse triggers.

The Steam Deck OLED has two trackpads, gyro support, and four assignable rear buttons. Trackpads can be particularly useful for mouse-heavy strategy games, management games, older PC titles, and desktop navigation. Buyers who mostly play action games may prefer the Ally’s familiar Xbox layout; buyers who want flexible PC controls may benefit more from the Deck’s trackpads and extra rear inputs.
Storage and ownership costs
The base Ally’s 512GB drive can become restrictive after Windows, recovery data, launchers, updates, and large game installations. The Ally X’s 1TB drive is more comfortable but can also fill quickly with modern AAA games.
A microSD card is the easiest expansion route and is useful for storing games without opening the handheld. Xbox references compatible high-speed SanDisk cards, including capacities up to 2TB. A microSD card may not match an internal SSD’s performance in every workload, so buyers should not assume that advertised sequential read speeds translate directly into game-loading results.
An internal SSD upgrade can provide faster, larger storage, but it costs more and requires technical work. Budget separately for a case, screen protection, a dock, additional storage, or a keyboard and mouse if the handheld will also serve as a desktop PC.
The Ally X’s USB4 port and DisplayPort 2.1 support make it more attractive for monitor and peripheral use. Both Ally models can connect to external displays and accessories through USB-C, but a dock or hub may be an additional expense.

Choose the base ROG Xbox Ally if:
- You want Xbox integration, Game Pass access, and Windows PC storefronts at the lower Ally price.
- You already own games across Xbox, Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic, Battle.net, or other Windows stores.
- You prefer a 1080p/120Hz display.
- You are comfortable managing a Windows PC.
- You want to avoid the Ally X’s $400 premium and do not need its extra performance, memory, storage, battery, or USB4 port.
The base Ally is the sensible value choice within the Ally family, but its 512GB storage and 16GB memory make it less future-proof than the Ally X for demanding games.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You want the strongest hardware in the Ally range.
- You play demanding AAA games and are willing to tune settings and power modes.
- You value 24GB of memory, 1TB of storage, and an 80Wh battery.
- You plan to use the handheld with a monitor, peripherals, or a USB4 setup.
- The $999.99 price is acceptable even after adding a case, dock, storage, or subscription costs.
The Ally X is the better technical product, but its price is difficult to justify for a Steam-first buyer who primarily wants a simple handheld game console.
Choose the Steam Deck OLED if:
- You primarily play games from Steam.
- You value SteamOS, console-style navigation, and suspend/resume behavior.
- You want an OLED screen with HDR and stronger contrast.
- You want trackpads, gyro controls, and four rear assignable buttons.
- You do not need native Windows-first workflows such as PC Game Pass or broad launcher compatibility.
The Deck OLED is not the ideal choice for every anti-cheat system, Windows-only game, launcher, or Game Pass PC workflow. Check the specific games you play before buying.
Check carefully before buying any of them if:
- You expect every Xbox console game you own to run locally.
- You dislike Windows updates, launchers, account linking, or troubleshooting.
- You need long unplugged sessions in demanding AAA games.
- You are choosing only by battery capacity or advertised refresh rate.
- Your budget does not include storage, a case, a charger or dock, and potential subscription costs.
Bottom line
The $599.99 ROG Xbox Ally is the best starting point for buyers who want Xbox and Windows flexibility without paying for the Ally X’s premium hardware. The $999.99 ROG Xbox Ally X is the stronger choice for demanding games, more memory, larger storage, a bigger battery, and USB4.
The Steam Deck OLED remains the better value proposition for a Steam-focused buyer who prioritizes SteamOS simplicity, OLED image quality, suspend/resume, and adaptable controls. It is not a direct substitute for the Ally’s Windows and Xbox ecosystem.
Before paying, compare the live checkout price—not just the announced estimated retail price—and include the likely cost of storage, protection, docking, and any recurring Game Pass subscription. The most expensive handheld is only the best choice if its operating system and game library match the way you actually play.
