What a robotics-themed fund actually is
A robotics-themed exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a pooled portfolio built around an index or strategy intended to capture some part of the robotics economy. The portfolio can include companies that manufacture robots, supply sensors and actuators, produce semiconductors, develop artificial-intelligence software, or automate factories and warehouses. Some indexes also include medical, assistive, wearable, autonomous, humanoid, and service robotics.

The name alone does not tell you how much of each holding’s business comes from robotics. Index providers use different eligibility tests, revenue thresholds, classifications, geographic rules, market-capitalization screens, and rebalancing schedules. Two funds with similar names can therefore provide materially different exposures.

1. Read the index rules before reading the marketing
Identify the revenue test
Find out whether a company must derive a substantial share of revenue from robotics or whether it qualifies by supplying an enabling technology. A semiconductor manufacturer, cloud-computing provider, or diversified industrial conglomerate may be included even when robotics is a small part of its business. Ask whether the methodology measures current revenue, expected revenue, patents, business descriptions, or an external classification.
Map the permitted subsectors
Record every category the methodology allows. A humanoid-focused index may also include industrial and autonomous robotics, assistive and wearable devices, artificial intelligence, cognitive computing, and advanced hardware. That breadth can make the fund less sensitive to the fortunes of any single robot segment, but it can also make the exposure less “pure” than the title suggests.
Check geographic and size constraints
Review the countries, exchanges, currencies, minimum liquidity, and market-capitalization ranges permitted by the index. Small companies can bring higher volatility and wider trading spreads; large multinational companies can dilute the direct robotics exposure. The rules should also explain security eligibility, weighting caps, reconstitution dates, and what happens when a constituent is acquired or falls below a threshold.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAs an illustration of how broad a theme can become, the BOTT prospectus said its index held 30 companies as of June 30, 2025. Constituent market capitalizations ranged from approximately $88 million to $3.9 trillion, and the weighted-average market capitalization was approximately $167 billion. Those figures describe that particular snapshot, not a permanent portfolio composition.
2. Check what the fund owns today
Compare the holdings with the index
Download the latest holdings file and compare it with the index description. Look at each issuer’s weight, country, sector, and stated business lines. A fund can follow an index while holding a representative sample rather than every constituent. The BOTT summary prospectus describes potential use of representative sampling and warns that thematic index construction may not produce the intended exposure.

Measure concentration
Calculate the share in the five and ten largest positions, then examine whether several holdings depend on the same customers, supply chains, or economic cycle. A portfolio of many ticker symbols can still be concentrated if most companies are semiconductor manufacturers, Japanese automation suppliers, or large-cap technology firms.
Look through diversified companies
Read company descriptions and annual reports for the largest positions. Determine whether robotics is a dominant business, a fast-growing division, or merely one product line. “Robotics” exposure created by a diversified company may behave more like a broad technology or industrial holding than a pure-play robotics investment.

Check turnover and rebalance dates
Holdings change when the index rebalances, when eligibility rules change, or when the fund adjusts for corporate actions. Note the date of the holdings file and the prospectus; a website portfolio can be stale by the time you trade.
3. Compare costs using matching categories
Costs come from owning the fund and from trading both the ETF and its underlying securities. Start with the fee table in the current prospectus, not an old webpage or a headline management-fee figure.
| Cost or measure | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total annual operating expenses | The percentage charged each year before any waivers or reimbursements, and whether those waivers expire | Reduces fund assets and therefore returns over time |
| Management fee | The adviser’s fee, shown separately from other operating expenses | It is not automatically comparable with another fund’s total annual operating expenses |
| Portfolio turnover | The latest fiscal-year percentage and the reasons for buying and selling | High turnover can increase brokerage and market-impact costs and may affect taxable distributions |
| Bid-ask spread | The difference between the displayed buying and selling prices during normal trading | You may pay this implicit cost each time you trade |
| Premium or discount to NAV | Whether the exchange price is above or below the fund’s net asset value | The price you pay can differ from the value of the underlying holdings |
BOTT’s summary prospectus dated January 28, 2026 listed total annual operating expenses of 0.35% and portfolio turnover of 197% for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2025. The turnover figure is a historical fiscal-year measure, not a promise about future activity. ROBO Global’s 2025 summary prospectus listed a 0.95% management fee. Because one figure is a management fee and the other is total annual operating expenses, they should not be treated as an apples-to-apples ranking; use each fund’s complete fee table and current date.

Broker commissions, account charges, currency-conversion costs, and taxes depend on your intermediary and jurisdiction. Read the broker’s current schedule and the fund’s tax disclosures. The general principle from SEC investor guidance is to understand the actual cost of buying, owning, and selling a fund before investing.
4. Understand ETF trading mechanics
NAV is not always the exchange price
Net asset value (NAV) is the per-share value of the fund’s holdings calculated under its valuation procedures. ETF shares trade throughout the day at market prices. Supply and demand, market closures, volatile underlying securities, and creation-and-redemption activity can push the market price above or below NAV.
Use limit orders thoughtfully
A market order accepts the best available price and can be costly when a thematic ETF is thinly traded or the underlying markets are closed. A limit order sets the maximum price you will pay or the minimum price you will accept, but it may not execute. Check the spread and recent trading volume during the time you intend to trade rather than relying on a single quoted snapshot.
Watch for international-market effects
If the fund owns securities in markets that are closed while the ETF trades, the NAV may incorporate stale local prices. That can temporarily widen premiums, discounts, or spreads. The SEC-filed BOTZ prospectus specifically explains that ETF shares can trade above or below NAV and that the bid-ask spread is a transaction cost.
5. Evaluate the risks specific to the theme
Thematic-definition risk
The index provider can classify a company incorrectly, use a methodology that captures only a weak connection to robotics, or fail to capture an important new business model. The theme itself may develop in an unexpected direction, and selected companies may not benefit even if robotics adoption increases.

Concentration risk
A small group of issuers, countries, or subsectors can drive results. Automation companies may be sensitive to factory spending; chip companies to semiconductor cycles; software firms to high-growth valuations; and early-stage robot developers to financing conditions. Concentration can produce larger gains and losses than a diversified global equity fund.
Technology and execution risk
Commercial deployment can take longer than expected, customers may reject products, and safety, reliability, labor, privacy, or regulatory requirements can delay sales. A company can spend heavily on research without producing durable profits. The fund does not remove those company-level risks; it packages them.
Tracking risk
Even when a fund follows an index, returns can differ because of operating expenses, trading costs, rebalancing, corporate actions, sampling, withholding taxes, and cash balances. Compare the fund’s historical performance with the index after expenses, while recognizing that past tracking does not guarantee future tracking.
Liquidity and market risk
Underlying holdings may be difficult to trade during stress, especially smaller companies or securities listed in different time zones. Wider spreads, larger premiums or discounts, and delayed price discovery can occur when markets are volatile.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Decide whether the exposure fits your plan
Start with the role the fund would play. If you already own broad technology, industrial, semiconductor, or international funds, a robotics ETF may overlap substantially with existing positions. Map the proposed holding against your target allocation, emergency savings, time horizon, liquidity needs, and tolerance for a sharp drawdown.

- Set a maximum portfolio percentage for a concentrated theme before buying.
- Decide whether the position is a long-term strategic allocation or a speculative satellite holding.
- Define what would make you rebalance: a weight limit, a change in the index methodology, or a change in your financial goals.
- Make sure you can tolerate losses without needing the money for near-term expenses.
Do not treat the industry narrative as a return forecast. The appropriate question is whether the exposure, risk, cost, and liquidity fit your plan—not whether robotics is an exciting technology.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Download the current documents. Obtain the statutory or summary prospectus, latest shareholder report, holdings file, and index methodology. Confirm publication dates.
- Write the exposure in one sentence. State which companies qualify, what revenue or classification test is used, and which regions and sectors are allowed.
- Inspect the portfolio. Record the top ten weights, five largest countries, sector totals, number of holdings, and any representative-sampling language.
- Reconcile costs. Compare total annual operating expenses with other funds’ total expenses, and separately compare management fees. Record turnover and any waiver expiration.
- Estimate trading friction. Observe the bid-ask spread, average volume, and recent premium or discount to NAV at the time and venue where you would trade.
- Stress-test the concentration. Ask what happens if the largest subsector, country, or three holdings fall sharply or if the theme takes years longer to commercialize.
- Check tax and account implications. Review turnover, distributions, withholding taxes, currency exposure, and whether the fund is available and appropriate for your account type and country.
- Document your decision rule. Note the intended position size, purchase method, review date, and conditions that would trigger a reduction or sale.
Questions to ask when comparing two robotics ETFs
| Comparison axis | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|
| Theme scope and purity | Revenue thresholds, eligible subsectors, enabling-technology rules, and exclusions |
| Current holdings | Top-position weights, number of holdings, countries, sectors, and overlap with your portfolio |
| Fees | Total annual operating expenses, management fee, waivers, and other disclosed charges |
| Turnover and tax effects | Latest fiscal-year turnover, rebalance frequency, distributions, and trading implications |
| Index implementation | Full replication or sampling, weighting method, rebalancing, and historical tracking difference |
| Trading quality | Bid-ask spread, volume, creation-and-redemption liquidity, and premium or discount to NAV |
| Geography and domicile | Currency, foreign-market exposure, fund domicile, withholding-tax treatment, and availability to you |
Use documents from the same period when comparing funds. A fee or holdings figure from one year cannot establish a current advantage over a newer figure from another fund.
What the available fund disclosures illustrate
The BOTT filings show why document-level review matters. Its 2025 prospectus described an index spanning humanoid and service robotics, industrial and autonomous robotics, assistive and wearable robotics, and AI, cognitive-computing, and advanced-hardware providers. Its 2026 summary prospectus reported 0.35% total annual operating expenses and 197% turnover for the specified fiscal year, while also discussing representative sampling and the possibility that thematic construction may not deliver the intended exposure.
ROBO’s 2025 summary prospectus listed a 0.95% management fee, but that number cannot be ranked directly against BOTT’s total annual operating-expense figure without the rest of ROBO’s expense table. The BOTZ filing’s explanation of premiums, discounts, and bid-ask spreads demonstrates that an ETF’s exchange-traded price can add a cost beyond the stated annual expense ratio.
These examples are illustrations of what to investigate, not endorsements or suitability determinations.
Bottom line for a prospective buyer
Buy only after you can explain, in plain language, what the fund owns, why each holding qualifies, how concentrated the portfolio is, what the complete annual and trading costs are, and how the position fits your existing allocation. Recheck the prospectus, shareholder report, methodology, holdings, spread, and premium or discount immediately before placing an order because all of those details can change.
